Overview

The latest Ford F-150 received a redesign for the 2021 model and the gas-powered version will be a carry-over model for 2022. The big news for the 2022 F-150 is a new all-electric version, named F-150 Lightning, but that will be available only in crew-cab. For the 2022 F-150 Regular Cab, Ford offers a few changes including new colors and package options. The 2022 Ford F-150 Regular cab version is available only on two trims - XL and XLT with prices starting at an MSRP of $29,640 for the short bed, V6, and rear-wheel-drive version. A high-performance version of the Raptor, popularly known as Raptor R, is set to join the 2022 Ford F-150 lineup and compete against Ram TRX.

The F-150 Regular Cab will continue to offer the same 290 hp 3.3L V6 and can tow up to 5,000 pounds in its base configuration. The 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine is no longer available. The interior will continue with a utilitarian look and will include a split-bench seat with cloth upholstery and an 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 4. For those who are looking to stand out with their F-150 regular cab, the 11 color options are expected to continue. That said, it will come into direct competition to Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab, Ram 1500 Classic Regular cab, and the GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab.

Buying Advice

As you can clearly see, the pick-up truck segment is very mature, and manufacturers definitely don’t shy away from offering luxuries at higher costs. For a truck that can be had for $30,000, it would seem awkward to pay a sum upwards of $70k. Nevertheless, the luxuries and conveniences provided in the higher trims are actually quite useful, although one could argue that the bare necessities are offered from the lowest XL trim onwards, indicating the F-150 is not just a cash grab from the Blue Oval.

The truck you choose is heavily dependent on your purpose, the time you spend behind the wheel, and most importantly how easy you are to impress, but if we had to suggest a trim, it would be the LARIAT. It offers basic luxuries such as a heated steering wheel for a cold day, and the leather upholstery and wooden interior accents should make for a comfortable experience at a reasonable price.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling truck in America for 43 years because it consistently offers capability, value, innovation, and choice - Kelley Blue Book

Having got a refresh in the 2021 model year, the 2022 Ford F-150 is a carry-over model with no significant change. The F-150 Regular cab models are only offered on the two base trims - XL and XLT. Prices start at $29,640 for the no frills XL with a regular cab, short bed, 2WD, and a V6 engine. The XLT trim starts at $35,750, while the upscale Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited, Tremor, and Raptor trims are available with crew cab style only. That said, a fully electric F-150 with almost 300 miles of all-electric range is set to join the Ford lineup and should go on sale in 2022. A higher-performance variant of the Raptor is also expected to be revealed - F-150 Raptor R.

The 2022 F-150 regular cab will be powered by a 3.3L V6 making 290 hp and can tow up to 5,000 in its base configuration. It also comes with two optional engines - 2.7L Ecoboost and a 5.0L V8. The interior features a split-bench seat that seats 3 occupants with cloth upholstery and an 8-inch infotainment system with Sync 4 interface. Safety features include standard safety features such as a forward-collision warning system, a safety canopy curtain airbag, and many more.

Buying Advice

Priced at an MSRP of $35,500, We would recommend getting the XLT trim with RWD configuration and opt for the 2.7L EcoBoost engine which will cost an additional $1,195. We would recommend getting the optional trailer towing package, the 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, integrated trailer brake controller, Ford's Co-Pilot 360 Assist 2.0, and interior work surface as well.

Features

The 2022 Ford F-150 regular cab is expected to be a carry-forward model as the entire F-150 lineup was updated in the 2021 model year. The Ford F-150 will continue to offer the same two trim levels - XL and XLT. Pricing for the 2022 F-150 starts from $29,640 for the base XL 2WD regular cab version with a short bed. The F-150 XLT Regular Cab from $35,750 with 2WD. Ford offers a long bed version that costs $300 extra. For those looking for all-weather capability, the 4WD is available across the lineup.

As there are no changes expected the 2022 Ford F-150, the pick-up truck will continue to offer a 3.3L V6 engine and will come with the option of 2.7L EcoBoost and a 5.0L V8 and will come with the standard drivetrain of RWD with the option of the 4WD drivetrain that will cost an additional $4,645. Ford has discontinued colors like Guard, Kodiak Brown, and Lead Foot from F-150's color palette, while Atlas Blue is a new offering. For 2022 other changes include new packages available on various models.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

The 2022 Ford F-150 regular cab is expected to see no changes to the engine or major mechanical parts, hence we do not expect the fuel economy figures to change. The 2022 F-150 will give 20 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and a combined 21 mpg. The 4WD F-150 drops the mpg figures by 1 mpg in the city and combined and 2 mpg on the highway.

Compared to the competition the Ford F-150 does offer the best-combined fuel economy but the Ram 1500 classic with a larger fuel tank offers the best better-combined range.

Though the awaited 2022 F-150 Raptor R which will rival the Ram 1500 TRX shall spice up the looks, but we will have to wiat until Ford's 2022 reveal.

The XLT trim adds the chrome bumpers, chrome grille, and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. There are 11-color options available (8-colors on XL) with has a secondary color option of Carbonized Gray. There are many exterior options for the bed, side mirrors, remote systems, skid plates (4WD only), all-season or all-terrain tires, and a keyless entry pad.

Competition
6.0/10

2022 Ford F-150 Regular Cab vs 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 regular Cab

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab has better interior features, more interior space, better towing in its base configuration as well. However, the Ford F-150 does offer a better fuel economy, choices of more powerful engines and even a choice of two-bed lengths perfectly suited to your needs. Additionally, the Ford F-150 is a bit more affordable too.

2022 Ford F-150 Regular Cab vs 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 takes a tough beating when compared to the Ford as the F-150 looks better, performs better, and certainly has a better fuel economy when compared to the Silverado. F-150’s infotainment system is also better along with offering a choice of pick-up bed lengths making the F-150 a better option. However, as it is similarly priced it does round up to which one you like.

2022 Ford F-150 Regular Cab vs 2021 RAM 1500 Classic Regular Cab

The Ram 1500 makes more power but does lose out in performance, however, offers more in towing capacity and driving range. Ram is known for building one of the best interiors in the pick-up truck segment, but you will see that on higher trims in crew cabs on Rams. That said, the Ram 1500 classic is a bit cheaper than the Ford F-150.

Final Verdict

The Ford F-150 has been updated in the 2021 model year hence we do not expect it to have many changes for the 2022 iteration. That said, there is a lot of performance on offer and there is a decent amount of space and options for customizating the truck to suit your work needs.

              Great vehicle

Pros - ["Fuel economy", "Comfortable", "Good performance"]

Cons - ["High maintenance costs", "Regular recalls", "Cheap interior"]

The pickup truck is really great and love to drive. The fuel economy is really good. Very comfortable when going for a very long drive very spacious. The mileage is great. The only downside is constant repairs and recalls makes it difficult.
