Overview

The 2022 Ford Ranger is a capable mid-size truck that slots under the best-selling Ford F-150 full-size truck. It offers a smaller turbo-four engine producing 270 hp instead of a gas-guzzling V-6 or V-8 as seen on its bigger sibling, the F-150. But due to its lower curb weight and smaller footprint, the turbo-four feels punchy and offers a class-leading towing capacity of 7,500 pounds and payload capacity of 1,860 pounds. This year except for the addition of a new Splash trim the trim lineup of the 2022 Ranger remains the same as the 2021 Ranger.

  • Don't like the looks of the current Ford Ranger? Well, wait for some time as Ford is going to debut the 2023 Ranger | 2023 Ford Ranger Preview

Except for that, the 2022 Ranger is almost similar to last year. The 2022 Ranger SuperCrew with seating for five offers a 5-feet cargo bed and gets RWD as standard. While the 2022 Ranger SuperCab with a smaller cab will be available with a 6-feet cargo bed and get RWD as standard. That being said, for the off-road biased audience, the 2022 Ranger will continue to offer the Tremor model. The 2022 Ford Ranger will face competition from the likes of GMC Canyon, Chevrolet Colorado, and Toyota Tacoma.

Buying Advice

The XLT trim is an attractive option. Falling in the middle of the lineup, the XLT isn't bareboned like the XL, and neither does it carry the high price premium of the Lariat. It offers some intuitive additions to its feature lineup and carries some interesting exterior changes as well.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Ford Ranger SuperCrew will start below the MSRP of $28,000 for the base XL trim and will touch the $40,000 mark for the top-of-the-line Lariat trim. It will be mechanically similar to the outgoing model and offer minor updates to keep it updated. The 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine with 270 hp will continue to power up the 2022 Ford Ranger lineup. The AWD configuration is expected to add another $3,000-$3,500 across the trim hierarchy.

The exciting Splash trim is about to make a comeback for the 2022 Ford Ranger. It will add a classic 90’s touch by offering orange and black body side graphics, 18-inch 12-spoke wheels, orange grille nostrils, gloss black accents on the bumpers, grille, rearview mirror caps, wheel lip moldings, etc. It will also feature exclusive seats with orange contrast stitching and a carbon grain finish with tuxedo stripes for the Lariat trim, making it stand out with its distinctive zing.

Buying Advice
8.5/10

The XLT trim is an attractive option. Falling in the middle of the lineup, the XLT isn't bareboned like the XL while avoiding the high price premium of the Lariat. It offers some intuitive additions to its feature lineup and carries some interesting exterior changes as well. The XLT trim can be had with Tremor Off-Road Package or Splash Appearance Package. We would also like to add the 302A Equipment Group which would offer power folding mirrors, heated front seats, remote ignition etc.

Features
8.0/10

The 2022 Ford Ranger SuperCrew will be available in three trims: XL, XLT, and Lariat. The prices will be in the range of $28,000 to $40,000 barring additional charges and optional packages. All the trims come in RWD configuration as standard while 4WD can be added for another $3,000-$3,500 depending upon the trim. The cargo bed length will be 5-feet for the SuperCrew model. Ford is expected to offer many optional packages across the trim lineup for a more customizable buying experience.

The main ones are STX Special Edition Package, FX2 Package for the Ranger XL. The XLT trim will offer Ford Co-Pilot 360 Package, FX4 Package and Technology Package, Tremor Edition. The Lariat trim will offer Black Appearance Package and Ford Co-Pilot 360 Package as optional besides many equipment group packages.

Fuel Economy
6.6/10

The Ranger is equipped with the smallest engine, offering less power output but class-leading torque figures. The GM twins offer higher power output while being equipped with the same powertrain. The Toyota Tacoma offers underwhelming performance. The Ford Ranger offers 7,500 pounds of towing capacity and 1,860 pounds of payload capacity which is commendable for a small engine mid-size pickup truck.

The 2022 Ford Ranger boasts the best-in-class fuel economy figures without compromising on performance. The other trucks are not far away, and big fuel tanks give them a push to surpass the driving range of the Ford Ranger. The Chevrolet Colorado offers maximum range followed by Toyota Tacoma, GMC Canyon and Ford Ranger.

Interior
6.6/10

“Both the SuperCab and SuperCrew cabins are comfortable, however, and their controls are user-friendly.”- Car and Driver

The 2022 Ford Ranger SuperCrew will carry over the roominess along with supportive and relaxing seats. The design is expected to be the same; clean dashboard design, spacious front row seating, and impeccable visibility. The two small half-doors open up the cabin to accommodate 5-passengers, but accommodating 4-passengers will give everyone more comfortable seating for longer drives. The cabin can be modified from cloth seats to authentic leather surfaces.

The XLT trim will offer an optional XLT Mid Package that will add interior features like an auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and shifter, 110V AC power outlet. The XLT High Package will include power-adjustable and heated front seats, remote start, etc. The Lariat trim High Package will offer Technology Package, premium sound system, etc while offering ambient interior lighting and dual-zone climate control system as standard.

The Toyota Tacoma comes with cramped rear seats while the 2022 Ford Ranger Crew Cab is quite generous in terms of space and roominess. The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon twins are spacious, while the GMC Canyon unwraps opulence in the range-topping Denali trim. But Ranger has the largest cargo capacity of them all at 43.3 cu ft in the standard version followed by the GM twins and Toyota Tacoma

The 2022 Ford Ranger is expected to come with an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen as standard, running on the SYNC 3 interface. The SYNC interface is known for being intuitive with clear menu accessibility. It will also get FordPass Connect with a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM, Applink, and Bluetooth connectivity as standard.

Interior Features:

  • Leather-trimmed seats(Lariat trim)
  • Manually adjustable front seats
  • Power adjustable front seats (Optional)
  • Heated front seats (Optional)
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control (XLT and Lariat)
  • Optional B&O Sound System with HD Radio (SuperCrew only)

Exterior
6.6/10

“For 2022, the bold colors of the '90s will be back in the form of a new Splash appearance package and a Splash Limited Edition for the Ranger.”- The Car Connection

The 2022 Ford Ranger will come with similar exterior styling as the 2021 model. The front fascia will imbibe a small grille and two sleek headlamps. The front bumper with available fog lamps will give it a rugged look. The side profile will be like any other Crew Cab model with a short 5-feet cargo bed. The rear profile will get two vertical tail lamps and Ranger Banding embossed on the tailgate.

The overall styling seems to be unchanged for the 2022 model. However, the return of the Splash Appearance Package will make things interesting. It will be available with XLT and Lariat trim, offering 18-inch 12-spoke alloy wheels, black gloss trim accents with grille, mirror caps, fender vents, and bumpers. It will be paired with a tantalizing orange exterior color giving it an anchoring look.

The 2022 Ford Ranger is expected to be lighter than some of its rivals. The small wheelbase offers high maneuverability, while the apt ground clearance assists the Ranger to tackle rougher terrains. It is taller than its rivals, offering better headroom inside the cabin. The Toyota Tacoma offers higher ground clearance than the Ford Ranger.

Exterior Features:

  • Splash Appearance Package (XLT and Lariat)
  • Power locking tailgate
  • Capless fuel filler
  • Automatic on/off headlamps
  • Carbon black mesh grille with silver surround

Safety
7.0/10

The 2022 Ford Ranger Crew Cab is expected to receive no addition or updates to its plethora of safety features. The platform will remain unchanged, which means it will still be avouched by the overall 4-star safety rating by the NHTSA that was awarded to the previous model year. Even the IIHS tagged it as “Good” in various tests performed by it. The 2022 Ford Ranger will come with many passive and driver-assistance features like the Ford Co-Pilot 360.

Safety Features:

  • Pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking
  • Rear collision warning
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Lane departure warning system
  • Dynamic hitch assist backup camera
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Tire specific low tire pressure warning system

Competition
6.0/10

2022 Ford Ranger SuperCrew Cab vs 2021 GMC Canyon Crew Cab

The GMC Canyon is a capable workhorse, but next to the 2022 Ford Ranger Crew Cab it feels underpowered, lethargic, and less powerful. The Canyon in general offers sufficient power along with impressive towing and payload capacity.

But the Ranger sprints quicker, which gives more confidence while overtaking on highways. The interior of the Canyon is more spacious and offers more headroom and legroom in the rear.

2022 Ford Ranger SuperCrew Cab vs 2021 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab

The Chevy Colorado comes with an underwhelming standard engine option; even the V6 on offer doesn’t match the Ranger which offers splendid power, capabilities, and efficiency, all at the same instance.

Both the rivals are similar in terms of interior spacing and size. But the Ranger is swifter if that matters to the buyers. The Chevy Colorado and its 7,700 lbs towing capacity overthrow that of the Ranger, despite the low power and torque numbers of the former.

2022 Ford Ranger SuperCrew Cab vs 2021 Toyota Tacoma SR Double Cab

The Toyota Tacoma delivers a true face of ruggedness and durability, while the former aspect remains lower to the Gladiator choice in the segment. It offers two engine options and impressive towing capacity, but still not to the level of the Ranger.

But the interior of the Toyota offers a much more upscale outlook and better infotainment highlights.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Ford Ranger Crew Cab will have a refreshed design, better interior features, and more new updates. It might also introduce a new engine option that will be borrowed from its Bronco SUV sibling. Ranger offers complete all-in-one packaging of power, performance, practicality, and affordability. It also leads some popular nameplates in the segment and brings compact size with great efficiency and utility.
