Overview

The pickup truck segment is one of the most popular choices in the North American market. It offers good practicality and the modern pickup trucks do not compromise on comfort or technology inside the cabin either. But all the buyers do not need those massive fullsize pickup trucks and the market of midsize pickup trucks give a great option to such buyers. The GMC Canyon is one such option in the midsize pickup truck segment.

The GMC Canyon has been in the market for a long time and offers good practicality for the segment. General Motors has given a complete redesign to the 2023 GMC Canyon this year and that brings some significant changes to the truck. You can see the changes in the exterior, interior, and powertrain of the truck. This review focuses on the Denali trim of the GMC Canyon Crew Cab. The 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab competes against the likes of the 2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Double Cab, the 2023 Jeep Gladiator High Altitude Crew Cab, and the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Crew Cab.

Buying Advice

The 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab is the top trim of the Canyon. You do not have to rely on many optional packages to add features to the cabin. It gets most of the features optional on the lower trims as a part of the standard package. It comes with a more premium cabin feel. The base price of the GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab is quite high and similar to some fullsize trucks. So, we recommend going with the standard GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The GMC Canyon Denali is the top-of-the-line variant of the 2023 GMC Canyon and offers the best of what the Canyon has to offer. No matter which variant of the 2023 GMC Canyon you buy, it is only available in a single-bed configuration this year which does not offer a lot of flexibility to the buyers. The powertrain option is also limited to a single powertrain this year and there is no diesel engine on offer. But the GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab comes out as a good choice for buyers who want a decently capable and premium midsize pickup truck.

Features

The 2023 GMC Canyon Crew Cab is available in multiple trim levels depending on your priorities and budget. But the GMC Canyon Denali sits on the top of the Canyon lineup. The price for the GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab starts at an MSRP of $52,495 without any options. The GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab comes with 20-inch wheels, chrome exterior trim, special interior trim, all-weather floor mats, dual-zone automatic climate control, tilt-telescopic steering wheel, power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a bigger 11-inch digital instrument cluster. It also comes with a head-up display. The infotainment features include a large 11.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. You can also feel the difference in the cabin of the Denali trim as it looks more premium from the inside compared to the lower trims.

The 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab takes only 6.5 seconds to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint. It is also the quickest truck in the quarter-mile run. The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Crew Cab also comes with the same engine with the same power output. But it takes slightly longer to reach from 0 to 60 mph. The Colorado ZR2 Crew Cab takes 7 seconds to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint. The Jeep Gladiator High Altitude Crew Cab comes next taking 7.3 seconds to get to 60 mph from a standstill. The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Double Cab is the slowest truck in the competition taking 7.7 seconds to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint.

2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab Ride and Handling

The 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab is a body-on-frame pickup truck so you should obviously keep your expectations low in the handling department. The buyers getting the Cayon Denali Crew Cab will not get it for excellent driving dynamics either. But when you get that fact in your mind that it is a body-on-frame midsize pickup truck, you will not be disappointed with the driving manners of the FMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab. It remains planted even when you are at higher speeds considering the higher speed limits for a truck of this class,

The steering wheel feels very light at slow speeds but gains good weight as you reach higher speeds. There is also a decent amount of feedback from the steering wheel which boosts the confidence of the driver on the highway. GMC has controlled body roll very well in the current generation of the Canyon Denali. If you do not wish to take it in the corners at crazy speeds, you will not complain about body roll. The ride quality is also fairly good and the Denali trims make things even better with a more luxurious cabin feel.

2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab Braking Performance

The 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab comes with a decent braking system for the segment. It comes with 13.4 inches of brake rotors in the front wheels while the rear wheels get 13.3 inches of brake rotors. The size of the brake rotors are quite large and they also work well in real-world stopping situation. But you will have to consider the weight of the truck as it is heavier than some of its other rivals. The official stopping distance is not available for the 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab. But braking performance is impressive for its class. You also get good feedback from the braking pedals that inspire good confidence in the braking system.

The Jeep Gladiator High Altitude Crew Cab gets slightly smaller brake rotors while the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Double Cab gets the smallest brake rotors. The official braking distance is not available for any of the trucks in the competition.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

The 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab comes with a single powertrain option. It comes with a turbocharged inline-4 engine. But the fuel economy is not one of the strong points of the GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab. The fuel economy of the inline-4 engine is lower than the V6 powertrain that was offered in the last generation GMC Canyon. It manages to return 17 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg of combined fuel economy. These are EPA-estimated fuel economy figures and they can differ depending on the driving situation. The GMC Canyon Denali comes with a fuel tank capacity of 21.4 gallons. You can expect a maximum driving range of 449 miles on a full tank of fuel on the highway.

The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Crew Cab comes with the lowest fuel economy figures in the competition. The maximum driving range of the Chevy Colorado ZR2 is also limited to 407 miles on a full tank of fuel. The GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab offers slightly better fuel economy with the same powertrain. That also helps it achieve a better driving range. The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Double Cab delivers lower fuel economy than the Canyon. The Jeep Gladiator High Altitude Crew Cab returns the best fuel efficiency and also gets the best driving range in the competition.

Interior
6.0/10

The interior of the 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab has changed and the change is for good. You get a more modern and upmarket feel in the cabin now compared to the previous generation of the truck. But there are some areas in the cabin where General Motors have done cost-cutting in the interior. You will notice the premium wood and leather finish on the door panels. The same finish continues on the dashboard of the truck and the wood trim gives it a premium look. The diamond-patterned stitching on the door and the dash uplift the cabin experience even further. But you can notice the use of hard plastics on the top of the door panel and also on the top of the dash. The front seats are quite spacious and the rear seats also offer comfortable seating. There are multiple creature comforts present in the Canyon Denali. The cargo area is also decent for the class.

Now it comes with an 11.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display. There are many things to love about the screen but the first thing that you will love is the placement of the screen. The graphics of the screen also feels very good and it responds instantly to your touch response. The quality of the 360-degree camera is also quite good and you can get a nice view of the outside on the screen. The infotainment system comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are multiple other connectivity options and it comes as standard with a 7-speaker premium Bose sound system.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 11.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display

8.0/10

The 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab brings a completely new design language this time. You will notice the beautiful and sleek LED daytime running lights at the top of the truck when looking at it from the front. It gets a projector LED headlights setup and LED turn signals right below the LED DRLs. You can easily differentiate the Denali trim from the front as it gets a shiny chrome finish on the front grille with massive GMC badging in the red color in the center. It also gets tow hooks on both sides at the bottom. The side of the truck gets 20-inch wheels that go well with the overall design of the truck. You also get a chrome finish on the side mirrors and the door handles with the Denali trim. Even Canyon’s sister truck the Chevy Colorado is also not tested by either agency as of now. But when you consider the safety ratings of the previous generation of the GMC Canyon, it managed to score overall 4 out of 5 stars in the NHTSA’s crash test rating. The IIHS also gave it an impressive rating of Good in most areas. The Denali trim gets many advanced driver assistance technologies as a part of the standard package and you can only expect better results this time.

Safety features include:

  • Lane-keeping assistance
  • Forward collision warning with automatic braking
  • Rear parking sensors

Competition

2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab vs. 2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Double Cab

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Double Cab is less expensive than the Canyon Denali Crew Cab. But you have to make several compromises to save the small difference in the cost. The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro feels quite outdated compared to the completely redesigned Canyon Denali Crew Cab. Even the powertrain options of the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro are not exciting enough. Buyers will be disappointed with the performance and the cabin feel of the Tacoma. Especially, when you compare the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro against the GMC Canyon Denali, there are significant differences between the two trucks. For most buyers, the 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab seems more appealing.

2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab vs. 2023 Jeep Gladiator High Altitude Crew Cab

The 2023 Jeep Gladiator High Altitude Crew Cab is a midsize pickup truck focused on a completely different purpose. Although the GMC Canyon and the Jeep Gladiator belong to the same segment, there are some basic differences between these two trucks. The Jeep Gladiator does not feel at home at highway speeds. The Jeep Gladiator High Altitude Crew Cab comes with a more off-road-focused approach. The GMC Canyon serves that purpose with its AT4X trim and not Denali trim. Buyers looking for a more balanced pickup truck that also serves all the other purposes with ease will prefer the 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab.

2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab vs. 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Crew Cab

The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Crew Cab is basically the same truck from the inside with a different badging and a different name as the GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab. Both these trucks get the exact same specifications. General Motors focuses on offering a more premium approach with the GMC Canyon while a more practical approach with the Chevy Colorado. You can also see the same when you look at the price difference. There are hardly any differences between these two trucks if you do not care about the cosmetic changes. The Chevy Colorado ZR2 is a better choice for those who are tight on budget. The GMC Canyon Denali on the other hand will appeal more to those who can spend more and can spend some more.

Final Verdict

The 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab gets a complete redesign and kicks off the new generation of the Canyon. There are some significant changes in the areas that matter to the buyers of the GMC Canyon Denali over a Chevy Colorado. For the utility part, it is quite impressive for its class. But the sad news is that you do not get multiple bed configurations or powertrain options. The choices become quite limited in that aspect. But talking about the features that matter to the buyers of the top-of-the-line trim of the Canyon, there are various enhancements. The cabin feels more premium from the inside now. There are multiple creature comforts and premium touches in the cabin. Additionally, it also gets many technologies inside the cabin compared to the previous generation of the Canyon. The 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab comes with a single potent powertrain option and the towing capacity is also impressive for its class. Overall, it offers a good package to buyers who want a premium midsize pickup truck.
