Overview

Honda has received several accolades over decades for its impressive lineup of vehicles that are both practical, safe, and stylish. While the brand has proved its mettle in the utility vehicle industry with its products, it decided to have a share of the popular pickup truck market as well. With that in mind, the Ridgeline was introduced back in 2006 and has been in production since. The truck hit its second generation model in 2017 but remained a big SUV-based truck even to this day. While plenty of its competitors sport a rugged appeal and carry much lower base price tags, the Ridgeline focuses on comfort, a pleasurable experience, and safety along with a long list of standard features.

The 2023 Honda Ridgeline will see no updates and will be powered by the same trusted V6 motor. While a majority of its rivals get a smaller turbocharged I-4 as their base powertrain, Honda chose to place the Ridgeline slightly on the premium side but with all the bells and whistles onboard. The base price for the 2023 Ridgeline will commence from $38,800, putting it in direct competition with the likes of the Toyota Tacoma, the Ford Ranger, and the Chevrolet Colorado.

Buying Advice

The base model is adequately equipped to cover several requirements. However, due to Honda’s tasteful tailoring of each trim level according to the price, you can go ahead with the trim that suits your requirements and budget.

Features
7.0/10

The 2023 Honda Ridgeline Crew Cab starts at a higher spectrum of the price band in the class with a base price tag of $38,800. However, Honda has been generous enough to equip the truck with the best possible features to justify the price tag. The base Sport trim gets features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, illumination on the truck bed for low light scenarios, three-zone automatic climate control, a useful Class III trailer hitch with a seven-pin connector, and LED headlamp units. The RTL trim gets a sunroof, acoustic windshield to reduce cabin noise, power-operated rear window glass, and memory settings for the driver's seat among plenty of other features. The RTL-E brings in several convenience and aesthetic features such as upgraded LED lights for the truck bed, ambient lighting for the interior, a heated steering wheel, and a wireless phone charging pad. The top-end Black Edition only gets cosmetic upgrades such as blacked-out exterior paint, wheels, black leather interior with red accents, and red ambient interior lighting.

Release Date

While Honda hasn't announced the official release date of the 2023 Ridgeline, we expect it to hit the roads by the end of 2022 or early 2023.

Fuel Economy
6.9/10

The Honda Ridgeline’s standard V6’s mpg figures don't match with the numbers provided by the smaller turbocharged engines of the rivals. However, the numbers are decent enough for the amount of grunt the motor delivers. As per the EPA, the 2023 Honda Ridgeline will return an average of 18 mpg in city limits and 24mpg out on the highways. With a combined mpg rating of 21 mpg, the truck offers a city driving range of over 350 miles along with over 400 miles of combined driving range as well.

The Chevrolet Colorado has the lowest city mileage rating here along with the lowest combined mpg rating too. The sizable 21-gallon gas tank of the truck helps it deliver some presentable driving range figures through among the rivals here. The Ford Ranger has the highest mpg ratings here but the figures should’ve been better given the compact size of the powertrain. As such, the Ranger manages to impress with its city mileage despite having a small 18-gallon gas tank. The Toyota Tacoma has the least highway mileage among the rivals here but comes up on the top in terms of driving range due to its big 21-gallon gasoline tank capacity.

Interior
8.0/10

Honda kept the Ridgeline strictly a car-based truck and it is quite prominent on the interior of the vehicle. The dashboard layout might seem button-heavy but the controls are well within the reach of the driver’s seat. The absence of a gear selector stick looks cool but you might need a few getting-used-to moments with the vehicle for a smooth operation. Right from the base trim, the truck is quite well equipped with features such as three-zone automatic climate control and power-adjustable seats. As you go up the trim ladder, features start adding up which is convenient. Some of the features include leather wrapping and heating for the steering wheel, ambient interior lighting, heating for the front seats and inside rearview mirror, and leather upholstery. The seats at the front offer excellent comfort levels and support while the rear seats offer plenty of room for adults as well.

N/A

The Chevrolet Colorado has the most basic-looking cabin here and lacks that car-like feel of the Ridgeline. The Colorado has a bigger cargo area than the Ridgeline and that is what counts for a vehicle in this segment. The Ford Ranger’s cabin looks a bit basic too in terms of design as compared to the Ridgeline, but has a truck-like feel. The rear seats of the Ranger lack legroom for adults but for short distances, it’s manageable. The cargo capacity is even more in the Ranger than in both the Ridgeline and the Colorado. The Toyota Tacoma has a proper truck-like cabin layout with a utilitarian design, complete with grab handles on the A-pillars. The rear seats of the truck are more cramped than all the rivals here but they can be used for keeping luggage items.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Honda Ridgeline Crew Cab include:

  • Automatic tri-zone climate control
  • Power-sliding rear window
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Driver's seat memory settings
  • Power-adjustable and heated front seats
  • Leather upholstery

How intuitive is the 2023 Honda Ridgeline Crew Cab’s infotainment system?

The 2023 Honda Ridgeline gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display running a smooth user interface. As standard, the system offers features such as two USB ports, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a seven-speaker audio system. As the trim level increases, features start adding up including a navigation system, wireless device charging pad, satellite radio, HD radio, an upgraded 8-speaker audio system, and speakers on the cargo bed as well.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 Honda Ridgeline Crew Cab include:

  • 8-inch touch screen
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Seven-speaker/8-speaker audio system
  • Bluetooth
  • Two USB ports

Exterior
7.0/10

Being a car-based truck, the 2023 Honda Ridgeline looks more like an extended SUV with a cargo bed at the rear. After the latest redesign, the Ridgeline looks quite handsome but lacks the rugged and truck-like feel of its immediate rivals. Moreover, the truck sits the lowest to the ground than all its rivals too, making it quite impractical over tough terrains. The front end gets a big grille flanked by a couple of standard LED headlamp units and a body-colored front bumper. Being a pricey truck, it gets 18-inch alloy wheels as standard that gels well with the urban styling of the vehicle. The side profile also bears an SUV-like design and the rear end is the only place that gives the Ridgeline its “truck” vibe. Some of the interesting features of the vehicle include cargo bed speakers, a standard 7-pin connector with a Class 3 trailer hitch, and a fully independent rear suspension.

The Chevrolet Colorado is a small version of its bigger sister, the Silverado 1500, and gets a proper exterior design too. While the basic trims of the Colorado look a bit bland, the ones that are at level with the base trim of the Ridgeline get a better set of cosmetic upgrades. Moreover, the Colorado has an 8.2-inch ground clearance that allows it to go over tough terrains much more easily than the Ridgeline when equipped with 4WD. The Ford Ranger could’ve been easily a smaller version of the F-150 but, instead, the brand based it on the Everest SUV that is not available in the country. The overall design of the Ranger is pleasant but its front end needs an update when compared to the immediate competitors it faces here. The Toyota Tacoma‘s exterior design is inspired by several utility vehicles from the brand, with the Tundra's fascia having the most impression at the front.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Lights in the truck bed
  • Keyless entry
  • Noise-reducing front windshield
  • Heated mirrors
  • Sunroof

Safety
7.0/10

The 2023 Honda Ridgeline Crew Cab has a solid safety department for a pickup truck. The NHTSA gave the 2022 Ridgeline a complete 5-star rating while the IIHS gave mostly Good ratings on the testing parameters. Apart from that, the truck gets Honda Sensing Safety Suite that covers Adaptive cruise control, Lane keeping assist, and Forward collision mitigation system as standard. The truck can be equipped further with features such as front and rear parking sensors and a blind-spot monitoring system.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Forward collision mitigation system
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Traction control

Competition

2023 Honda Ridgeline Crew Cab vs 2022 Chevrolet Colorado

The Chevrolet Colorado has been a popular truck in the compact pickup segment by virtue of its strengths such as its practicality, affordable base price tag, and optional off-road-friendly models. While the Ridgeline is among the few to offer spacious rear seats, the Colorado delivers on its capability aspect with more cargo space and a higher tow rating than the former. Overall, the Colorado will appeal to budget-oriented and practicality-oriented shoppers.

2023 Honda Ridgeline Crew Cab vs 2022 Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger is the only one among the rivals here that doesn't get a V6, but it doesn’t need one either. With its smaller 2.3-liter turbo I-4 motor, it levels it out with bigger V6 motors both in terms of performance, towing, and hauling capacities alike. The Ranger has a so-so cabin as compared to the Ridgeline and has a lower base price too. However, it does entice with its bigger cargo bay and better tow rating as compared to the Ridgeline.

2023 Honda Ridgeline Crew Cab vs 2022 Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma is the most rugged-looking competitor here and provides the maximum ground clearance right from its base trim. While the Tacoma has plenty of edge over the Ridgeline in several aspects including practicality and reliability, the latter gets you the closest to owning an SUV with the quirks of a pickup truck. Moreover, the Ridgeline suits urban purposes better than the Tacoma with its spacious cabin and comfortable ride as well.

Final Verdict

The Honda Ridgeline would be a go-to option in the class if you’re looking for a safe and spacious pickup truck instead of an SUV. The Ridgeline might demand a higher base price than most of the rivals in the class but it fulfills most of the requirements with adequate standard features, a comfortable ride, a decently spacious cargo bay, and a cozy and spacious cabin. Overall, the Ridgeline should be on your priority list if you wish to use a truck mainly inside the cities and highway runs.
