Overview

The Honda CR-V is one of the most popular crossover SUVs in the American market and everyone got excited when the new-age CR-V was teased by Honda. The 2023 Honda CR-V has now officially made its debut in its sixth-generation avatar and gets a ton of updates over the previous model year. The mechanical changes for this Honda include wider front and rear tracks, tougher structural components, and improved suspension tuning.

The turbo-4 engine of the 2023 CR-V is retuned for better response and more efficiency while the CVT and AWD have also been reworked. The refreshed design is smoother and sportier, while the cabin is more spacious and gets even more features. The prices for the Honda 2023 CR-V have also been revealed and it now starts at $28,410. This makes the new CR V a whopping $1,610 pricier than the outgoing model. For a more real-world analysis of the CR-V 2023, check out the video below by "Autobytel".

Alongside conventional models that produce 190 horsepower, a 2023 Honda CR-V hybrid will also be sold to target the audience looking for fuel economy. The new CR-V promises to offer even more of its renowned practicality with bigger dimensions and more passenger room. Modern technology is used to enhance its appealing interior design and every CR-V, of course, comes with a variety of standard driver assistance features. In the very competitive midsize crossover SUV segment, Honda leads the pack against other competent rivals like Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson, and Toyota RAV4

Buying Advice

Since the Honda CR-V 2023 is pricier as compared to the more affordable rivals, we recommend opting for the CR-V EX model only. At a price tag starting at $31,060, it adds plenty of necessary features, and the optional blind-spot monitor is worth the additional investment. Also, opting for the AWD drivetrain will add more practicality in rough weather conditions and should be a smart pick at just $1,500.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

While the Honda CR-V 2023 leaves no stone unturned this year with its generational update, the non-hybrid models do not get the popular Sport and Sport Touring models. Honda also offers the Honda Service Pass which is a 2-year complimentary service program for all CR-V buyers. The warranty is pretty standard as well, 3 years/36,000 miles basic warranty and 5 years/60,000 miles drivetrain warranty.

The 2023 model year Honda CR-V gets a decent reliability rating of 82/100 from J.D. Power, but rivals like Chevrolet Equinox and Subaru Forester get a much higher rating. Expect the 5-year cost of ownership of the CR-V 2023 to be around $34,950. Honda offers finance at just 3.9% APR for up to 48-month tenure while the lease deals begin as low as $315/month for a period of 36 months and an annual mileage of 10,000 miles.

Features
8.5/10

The trims and configurations for the new Honda CR-V have also changed with its sixth generation iteration. The gas-only 2023 CR V is available for sale in only 3 trims, starting with the base Honda CR-V LX at a sticker price of $28,410. The next in line is the CR-V EX which carries a price tag of $31,060 while the top model is limited to the Honda CR-V EX-L which costs $33,710.

All these prices exclude the $1,325 destination and handling fees and the AWD drivetrain costs $1,500 extra. As standard, all CR-V models get a host of driver safety aids which include forward collision warning with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, 8 airbags, traction & stability control, rear view camera, and tire pressure monitoring.

The 2023 Honda CR-V Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid trims can be had with only the 2L 204 hp and twin-electric motor hybrid setup, prices for which start at $32,400. The CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid lies at the top-end of the spectrum and gets a starting price of $39,100.

2023 Honda CR-V LX features:

  • 17-inch steel wheels
  • LED headlights & brakelights w/Automatic Highbeam
  • Push-button start & Automatic air conditioning
  • 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system w/voice commands
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • 4-speaker sound system

2023 Honda CR-V EX features:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Sunroof & Heated side mirrors
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Power-adjustable driver's seat
  • Heated front seats
  • 6-speaker sound system

2023 Honda CR-V EX-L features:

  • Low-speed automatic braking
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Power liftgate & Power-adjustable front passenger seat
  • Driver's seat memory settings & Leather interior upholstery
  • 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Wireless smartphone integration & Wireless smartphone charging pad
  • 8-speaker sound system

Honda does not usually offer many options and packages and hence the list is minimal. That said, Honda does offer a long list of accessories to better suit your style and needs from this family crossover. Buyers can also opt for the blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic with the EX and EX-L trims for an added sum of $550.

There is also a $1,745 HPD Package on offer for these trims that add HPD emblems & decals, a tailgate spoiler, fender flares, and exterior trim accents. The 18-inch HPD Bronze alloy wheels are available as a separate accessory and cost extra. There's also a Utility package on offer that adds roof rails, crossbars, running boards, a trailer hitch, and seatback protectors for $1,780.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The gasoline-run 1.5L engine can be configured with either front-wheel or an all-wheel drive setup. Though there is a difference in the EPA rating of both variants, the difference does not put these vehicles miles apart. The FWD CR-V is rated to puh out 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. The combined fuel economy of FWD and AWD CR-Vs are separated by just a mile. However, if these numbers don’t excite you, look for the Hybrid variants that carry an EPA of 40 mpg, which is a drastic increase from the gas-only models. There isn’t any increase from the previous year's model but the CR-V still happens to be one of the most efficient models available.

While taking the city and highway performance, the Honda CR-V holds one of the highest efficiency but move to the combined figures and all the cars produce an identical result except for the Hyundai, which falls by just 1 mile. However, the larger tank on both the Ford and Toyota make their overall range superior to that of the Honda. Ford carries the highest combined range at 444 miles, which is 24 miles more than what the Honda offers. All the SUVs here offer great fuel economy and all have a Hybrid powertrain option for the ones looking to save up on fuel.

Interior
9.0/10

The honeycomb-textured insert that covers the majority of the dash and subtly conceals the air vents is a feature of the CR-elegant V's interior design. An analog speedometer and a partially digital instrument cluster are framed by the steering wheel. According to Honda, the new CR-V's revised driving posture and front seats are intended to reduce driver tiredness on lengthy travels. There is a sizable center console bin between the front-seat occupants, and behind them are reclining back seats with an increase in rear legroom of 0.6 inches over the previous CR-V. All CR-V trims have 36.3 cubic feet of cargo space, which increases to 76.5 cubic feet when the back seats are folded. Buyers will also get more premium-feeling seats on the EX-L trims that come wrapped in leather.

With the new improved length of the CR-V, the rear legroom has increased and is one of the best in class. This makes the CR-V a more ideal choice for families and in terms of cargo holding capacity, the CR-V takes a clear win by beating the Hyundai by just over 1.5 cu-ft of additional space. However, with the rear seats in use, the CR-V offers a smaller space compared to its rival. Those looking to buy a spacious SUV for a family of 5 should lean more towards the Honda and Hyundai as they both offer very similar interior dimensions. Those picking the Ford will be left with a noticeably smaller trunk than what Honda offers, making it a less practical choice in the lineup.

Some standout interior features on the 2023 Honda CR-V include:

  • Cloth or Leather upholstery
  • Keyless entry
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Honeycomb mesh on the dashboard
  • Power adjustable front seats
  • Steering-mounted controls

How intuitive is the 2023 Honda CR-V infotainment system?

On the EX model, the infotainment system of the CR-V is controlled by a 7.0-inch touchscreen. Physical volume and tuning knobs, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are all included in the arrangement. The 9.0-inch touchscreen in the EX-L variant supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The larger display lacks a tuning knob, but it does have a volume control for the integrated navigation system and two USB-C connections for the passengers in the backseat. The base trim is also equipped with 6 speaker audio system and upgrading to the EX-L brings in an 8-speaker setup. Honda has also decided to reserve the 12-speaker Bose audio system for the Sport Touring Hybrid model.

Some of the standout infotainment features on the 2023 Honda CR-V are:

  • 7 or 9-inch touchscreen
  • Digital gauge cluster
  • 6 or 8-speaker audio system
  • USB-C connections
  • Wired/wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Sirius XM satellite radio

Exterior
6.0/10

The 2023 CR-V sports the new corporate face of Honda, while the side profile might pass for a high-end German car and the back for a Volvo. More inside space is provided by the new crossover's larger and wider body than its predecessor. The sixth-generation 2023 CR-V sports a more rugged and upscale external appearance than the 5th gen 2022 CR-V. The new CR-V's upright grille is one of its most distinctive visual characteristics. The SUV also sports a new bumper that houses two air vents that aren’t functional but add a lot more character to the whole vehicle. However, all the styling options like blacked-out trims are reserved for the Hybrid models, making the gasoline versions look dull in comparison.

While the ground clearance for the CR-V isn’t available yet, it is highly likely to slightly increase from the previous year's 7.8-inches. That is enough to make it practical over tough terrains. The clearance offered by Toyota is the best in class and it also is the tallest SUV here. With the newly increased length, the Honda happens to be the longest vehicle. No other SUV receives a major make-over like what Honda receives for 2023 and this makes it look very fresh. The Honda will also ride on 18-inch alloys that blend well with the design but there is a black 19-inch set that is available only for the top-of-the-line hybrid.

Some of the standout exterior features include:

  • 18-inch allow wheels
  • Chrome exterior trims
  • Sunroof
  • LED headlights and fog lights
  • Tall grille
  • Shark-fin antenna

Safety
7.0/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V is equipped with the most recent A.C.E structure design. To provide better protection, even the airbags' design has been upgraded. As part of the Honda Sensing suite of safety technologies, an improved camera with a 90-degree and 120-degree field of vision is included as standard equipment. The provision of blindspot data as standard is a good thing. There are also some additional functions, such as Traffic Jam Assist, Low-Speed Braking Control, and Traffic Sign Recognition. Along with the standard safety measures, the CR-V has been updated to include a Driver Attention Monitor.

Some of the standout safety features available with the 2023 Honda CR-V are:

  • Blind spot monitor
  • Forward collision warning
  • Road departure mitigation system
  • Electronic braking assist
  • Emergency braking light
  • Adaptive cruise control

2023 Honda CR-V vs 2023 Ford Escape

The Honda CR-V and Ford Escape have always faced off against one another. With their roomy interiors and smooth rides, both vehicles have won over purchasers. The sixth-generation platform of the CR-V, however, may make it the winner in comparison to the 2023 model year. After undergoing a redesign, Honda's midsize SUV not only has improved specs, technology, and safety features.

2023 Honda CR-V vs 2023 Toyota RAV4

Although it may not be the fastest car on the road right now, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 accelerates faster than the CR-V. It continues to be a complete alternative that is elegant, safe, and ergonomically designed. It comes with an off-road-specific trim for increased capabilities and is simple to drive. It still competes directly with its Japanese counterpart. However, Honda has overcome its flaws of an out-of-date infotainment system and a somewhat lower towing capacity with its makeover, making it a better option.

2023 Honda CR-V vs 2023 Hyundai Tucson

With the recent upgrade that the Tucson underwent, it is equally as refreshed as the Hinda and offers a very dynamic design language. The Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V are two spacious and fuel-efficient SUVs in the segment but the slightly more premium interior of the Honda gives it an edge. Another factor that helps the Honda pose as the better option is its pricing as the Tucson is slightly more expensive.

Final Verdict
8.5/10

The Honda CR-V represents a revolutionary advancement for the company. It meets the requirements of the compact SUV class thanks to its upgraded powertrain, revamped exterior, fewer emissions, and larger cabin. With the loss of cheaper trims, pricing will inevitably increase. The new CR-V can therefore be a good choice because it strives to give amazing performances while still being an eco-friendly, cozy, and useful alternative. So if you're considering purchasing an SUV in this market, we advise you to hold off till it comes out.

              2024 CRV Hybrid review

Pros - ["The space inside", "The new design", "User friendly radio"]

Cons - ["When you don't put the SUV in park, it can move and you won't hear it.", "The leather inside needs to be constantly maintained", "The gas mileage doesn't seem as good as I had hoped"]

I was really happy to see the new CRV model. I never cared for the recent models. The drive is nice, but I am disappointed in always having to clean the interior on. daily basis. Its also too quiet if you forget to put it in park so it's easy to roll and not hear anything

Overall good, cabin has noticeable noise sometime, infotainment system buggy

Pros - Good mileage, seats are comfortable. Steering responsive and ride is smooth

Cons - Cabin could be noisy sometime. Mobile phone detection buggy, need to reboot infotainment system often

Some what worried about the oil dilution problem on CR-V, had look into RAV4, Equinox, Kona, CX3/5. But decided this one had the least problems On first visit, internet rep gave pricing sheet. Agreed to take the **RR alarm off (actually disabling it), without haggling. Gave further discount from updated pricing sheet, when paying deposit.
