Overview

Jeep developed a niche customer base with its rich heritage and a prolonged presence in the automotive industry. However, to participate in the aggressively-growing C-segment SUVs, the brand came up with several products of its own as well. The Jeep Compass was launched in 2006 when it was a rebadged Jeep Patriot with a slightly tweaked rear-end design. Back in 2011, the SUV received a major facelift and was made to look like a baby Grand Cherokee whereas it got its own distinctive design from the second-generation model. The SUV received a mild facelift for the current model year as well.

Buying Advice

The base Sport trim would suffice for shoppers on a tight budget, and it offers a generous list of standard features as well. However, the Latitude Lux is the most value-for-money trim since it gets AWD as standard along with several creature comforts and convenience features.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The upcoming 2023 Jeep Compass will retain the current design but there has been speculation that it will get updated powertrains. However, nothing has been confirmed by the brand officially yet. The current model gets a single 2.4-liter naturally aspirated motor that puts out strictly mediocre power and torque figures for its class. The SUV is available in several trim levels along with an off-road-specific Trailhawk model that offers impressive off-roading prowess. The price of the 2023 Compass is expected to start from $25,000 while the top-end trim is expected to cost around $30,000. The SUV competes with the Subaru Forester, the Toyota RAV4, and the Hyundai Tucson.

Features
7.0/10

The 2023 Jeep Compass is expected to arrive with no significant changes in its trim lineup along with features, other than a possible update to its powertrain. Even though the brand hasn't made it official about the trim levels, we expect the SUV to be offered in the same trim levels as the outgoing model. The lineup of the Jeep Compass starts off with the Sport trim which is expected to carry a slightly higher price tag, $25,000, over the current year's price. The Sport trim gets a long list of standard features for its price which include LED headlamps, satellite radio, and a big 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system among other features. The Limited trim gets bigger 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, and simulated leather upholstery. The Latitude Lux gets AWD as standard along with some useful upgrades over the lower trims such as keyless entry and ignition, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver's seat. The Limited trim offers some impressive convenience techs such as automatic rain sensing wipers and dual-zone automatic climate control. The top-end Trailhawk is off-road-focused and gets a trim-specific AWD system with low-range mode and off-roading tires among other features.

Release Date

Jeep hasn't announced the official release date of the 2023 Jeep Compass yet. We expect it to go on sale by fall 2022.

Fuel Economy
6.3/10

Compact crossovers have evolved at a rapid pace and have started to offer sedan-like fuel economy figures as well. Since it is not confirmed yet that the 2023 Compass will get the speculated update to its powertrain, we expect it will not affect the fuel economy number too much. The 2022 Jeep Compass offers an average of 22mpg in the cities and 31mpg out on the highways. The combined mileage is rated at 25. The disappointment lies in its overall driving range due to its smaller-than-average gasoline tank.

The Subaru Forester might have an aging flat-four motor under its hood but the fuel economy numbers are quite decent. Furthermore, the Forester gets a chunky 16.6-gallon gasoline tank that allows the SUV to cover over 400 miles inside the cities before heading to the gas station. The Toyota RAV4 returns the highest fuel economy numbers here with its 27mpg city mileage and 35mpg highway mileage. The Hyundai Tucson offers identical EPA ratings to the Subaru Forester but its smaller 14.3-gallon gas tank doesn’t offer the impressive driving range numbers as the latter.

Interior
6.0/10

The Jeep Compass has been let down due to its unremarkable and unimpressive cabin in its earlier models but the cabin improved vastly with the 2022 facelift. No update to the interior is expected for the 2023 model year as well. The Compass’ cabin gets an upscale feel with the new design and that big infotainment screen sits atop the dashboard’s center with a floating design, grabbing a majority of the attention. The center stack is on the narrower side and houses a couple of cup holders and the gear selector while the armrest sits slightly further at the back. The front seats are comfortable and supportive with a good amount of cushioning on offer. The driver’s seat gets height adjustment right from the base trim but the upholstery gets cloth in the base trim. Stepping up from the Sport trim will get you simulated leather upholstery and the steering wheel gets leather-wrapped treatment along with heating. The front seats also get heating function in the Latitude Lux trim and the Limited trim gets cool ambient cabin lighting too. The cargo capacity is slightly on the tighter side at 27.2 cu-ft. The headroom and legroom on offer are commendable for the class.

The Subaru Forester’s cabin has started to show its age significantly and the design looks quite overly busy with the button-heavy layout. However, the headroom and legroom on offer are exceptional for the segment nonetheless. The Toyota RAV4 gets a relatively simple cabin with a user-friendly layout but boasts a robust build quality. The cargo capacity is decent at 28.9 cu-ft. The Hyundai Tucson almost matches the Forester in terms of cabin space and gets a stylish design too. The cargo capacity is generous at 38.7 cu-ft.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Jeep Compass include:

  • Cloth upholstery
  • 60/40 split-folding rear seats
  • Rear air-con vents
  • Adjustable cargo loading floor
  • Heated front seats
  • Simulated leather upholstery

How intuitive is the 2023 Jeep Compass’s infotainment system?

The standard infotainment system onboard the Jeep Compass is an 8.4-inch touchscreen unit that runs Jeep’s latest UConnect 5 user interface. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are offered as standard along with a total of six USB ports. The Latitude Lux trim gets a bigger 10.1-inch touchscreen unit that offers a more immersive experience. The user interface is fluid and all the menu items are laid out in a user-friendly manner. The brightness levels are just about right and both the displays produce crisp and colorful graphics as well.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 Jeep Compass include:

  • 8.4-inch/10.1-inch infotainment display
  • Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Satellite radio
  • Six-speaker audio system
  • Six USB ports

Exterior
7.0/10

Right from being a rebadged Jeep Patriot to getting its own design, the Jeep Compass has been carrying on the brand’s image successfully. With the recent facelift, the SUV got even more up-to-date with the current design trend. At the front, the Compass gets a sleek seven-slot Jeep grille that you’ll find on the Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee and the LED headlamp units flank it in a way to give an aggressive appeal to the SUV’s front fascia. From the side, the square-ish wheel arches retain the necessary chunky Jeep styling. The rear profile remains unremarkable too with the sleek and compact LED tail lamps. Stepping up to the Trailhawk gets a more rugged exterior design with tow hooks, blacked roof, an underbody skid plate, and a raised suspension.

The Subaru Forester looks more like a lifted station wagon but impresses with its nearly 9-inch ground clearance. It is taller than most of its rivals which allows it to offer an impressive amount of space inside its cabin. The Toyota RAV4 is the most aggressive-looking crossover here and manages to match up with the Forester in terms of ground clearance. The Hyundai Tucson gets a sophisticated exterior appeal and the latest design update made it look like a regular vehicle from a sci-fi movie. It has the lowest ground clearance, making it suitable for on-road usage only.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlamps
  • Heated ORVMs
  • Roof rails
  • Automatic headlamps and fog lamps(Latitude trim onwards)
  • Black roof
  • Automatic rain sensing wipers with de-icer
  • Underbody skid plate
  • Tow hooks

Safety
6.0/10

Jeep did face criticism in the past due to safety concerns regarding the Grand Cherokee, but its recovery has been commendable over the years. The 2022 Jeep Compass performed decently on the NHTSA crash tests while receiving the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. We expect the upcoming 2023 Compass to retain these scores since no update is expected on the safety aspect of the vehicle. The SUV also gets three crucial ADAS features as standard right from the base Sport trim which are Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Mitigation, and BBlind Spot Monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Forward Collision Mitigation
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane Departure Mitigation
  • 360-degree camera system(optional)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control(optional)
  • Lane Keeping System(optional)

Competition
8.0/10

2023 Jeep Compass vs 2022 Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester made a name for itself with its standard AWD layout, that iconic flat-4 motor, and a spacious cabin with impressive comfort levels. The Forester also holds an edge over the Compass in terms of off-roading and pricing since the latter needs the pricey Trailhawk model to fully utilize the off-roading prowess. Whereas the Forester can venture into the wilderness right from its base trim onwards due to the standard ground clearance and that Symmetrical AWD system.

2023 Jeep Compass vs 2022 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 has been one of the oldest crossovers in the class but Toyota has upgraded it in a timely manner to keep it in competition. The RAV4 might not look appealing on the inside but it boasts a robust build and a sporty exterior design. Like the Compass, the RAV4 also has off-road specific models in its lineup but beats the former in the fuel economy department.

2023 Jeep Compass vs 2022 Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson simply kills it when it comes to both interior and exterior design. Moreover, it gets a longer list of standard features than most of the rivals in the segment too. However, its urban design and low ground clearance make it a near-perfect city and highway mile muncher. Moreover, it gets the fuel economy and the performance part right as well.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

The Jeep Compass makes a compelling option in its class, especially with its distinctive styling and that Jeep badge. Moreover, it can lure in shoppers with its handsome list of standard features and the standard safety techs along with the top-notch crash scores as well. However, it bites the dust in terms of performance and fuel economy, and we wish Jeep has given at least one more engine option for the Compass. Overall, if practicality is one of your primary concerns, there are better options in the market.
