Overview

The Honda CR-V does not need an introduction. For the 2022 model year, the CR-V starts at an MSRP of $26,800, aiming to dominate the market with five trim configurations: LX, Special Edition, EX, EX-L and Touring. The Touring trim now gets all wheel drive (AWD) as standard. Honda's top-selling midsize crossover is known for its spacious interior, stylish trim options, top-rated safety features, and an excellent official EPA fuel economy rating of up to 30 mpg combined. All the non-hybrid trims are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with 190 horsepower. The towing capacity is limited to just 1,500 pounds and AWD drivetrain is optional.

2022 Honda CR-V Buying Advice

For the 2022 model year, Honda has not made any significant changes as compared to the 2021 model year. The main reason behind it is the planned sale of the all-new 2023 CR-V this summer 2022. The 2023 Honda CR-V is redesigned from top to bottom, featuring sportier styling, roomier interior, multiple modern and refined features. Honda claims that the base engine is tuned for better gas mileage and response. Even handling is expected to improve, with new suspension setup and wider front and rear tracks. So in our opinion, it would be wise to wait for the sixth-generation 2023 CR-V.

The 2022 Honda CR-V is offered in both non-hybrid and hybrid trims, offering superior fuel economy, desirable safety features, spacious interior and good reliability. The non-hybrid trims are powered by a 1.5-liter inline-four turbo engine and CVT as standard. The near-perfect midsize crossover has also earned a Top Safety Pick award from IIHS, pointing at its impeccable safety ratings. The Honda CR-V 2022 competes with the likes of Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Rogue and Ford Escape. The CR-V Hybrid will be covered in a separate review. Let’s see how the non-hybrid version fares in our detailed review.

2022 Honda CR-V for sale

The 2022 Honda CR-V is one of the best midsize crossover that money can buy. The starting price of the base LX trim is $26,800 and it goes up to $36,600 for the top-tier Touring trim. Honda offers multiple finance and lease options for buyers. For example, the base LX trim can be financed at an APR of 3.9% for a term of 48 months with monthly payments of $632. The final APR (3.9%-5.9%) will vary on the term duration ranging from 24-72 months. The same trim can be leased for a term of 36 months with $255 monthly payment and $4,930 due at signing the agreement. The annual mileage limit is limited to 10,000 miles. Buying Advice

Considering the five trim configurations, we have shortlisted the EX trim for its value for money nature. The EX trim is about $2,500 more than the base LX and $1,300 more than the Special Edition trim. For the additional money, you get access to multiple features like heated front seats, one-touch power moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, LED fog lights, and power driver’s seat. Some safety features like collision mitigation braking system, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, multi-angle rear view camera and some more are also standard.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Honda CR-V has always enjoyed good sales numbers over the years and the 2022 model year aims to take it even further. Honda’s midsize SUV has a balanced recipe and offers good specifications, safety features, and decent fuel economy. The consumer reviews have been quite positive and buyers have rated it quite well for its reliability, resale and dealership experience. The 2022 CR-V has scored an overall 83 out of 100 in the J.D. Power Consumer Rating and it can be termed as “Great”. A quality and reliability score of 84 out of 100 signifies minimal issues. However, it does score only 78 out of 100 for its driving experience.

The Honda CR-V has also garnered attention for its low “Cost-to-Own’ nature and for a period of five years, the ownership costs are pretty acceptable. The estimated depreciation in the value of the CR-V after five years would be around $6,300. The fuel, insurance and maintenance charges are estimated to be around $10,300, $4,060 and $734 respectively. So, considering its segment, starting price and “Cost-To-Own”, we assume that the CR-V 2022 model won’t be very much heavy on the pocket of the buyers. Obviously, the ownership costs will increase with higher trims.

The Chevrolet Equinox is the least fuel efficient but is equipped with the largest fuel tank in the comparison. The maximum combined driving range is offered by Ford Escape, courtesy of larger fuel tank. It is followed by the Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V and Chevrolet Equinox. The Honda CR-V could have offered more range with a larger fuel tank.

Interior
9.0/10

A stylish and spacious interior creates a cool and comfortable environment in the CR-V - Car And Driver

The interior of the 2022 Honda CR-V is upmarket, offering a comfortable space for all its passengers. Honda’s midsize crossover can accommodate five passengers with adequate comfort and no one would complain even on long journeys. The dashboard is laid out well with the infotainment screen in the center and sleek air vents above it. Most of the controls are well within the reach and even outside visibility is good. The quality of materials is pretty good from the base trim itself and improves as you climb the trim ladder. The front seats are comfortable and so are the rear seats. Even the headroom and legroom is decent across both the rows and most passengers would be happy with it.

For starters, Honda offers the 2022 CR-V with a stylish cabin that features different interior color schemes including gray or black, and soft-touch seating material options, including leather-trimmed seats. However, the interior images don’t do justice to the actual interior design. The base LX trim is pretty basic and must be avoided. From the Special Edition onwards, multiple features like push button start, dual-zone climate control system, and heated front seats are offered. The EX-L adds multiple features like leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, auto-dimming rear view mirror, leather upholstery and 4-way power-adjustable seats for the front passenger.

The top-tier Touring trim comes with ambient lighting, heated steering wheel, power-adjustable front seats with memory function for driver’s seat, ventilated seats and all the features of the other trims as standard. A one-touch power moonroof is offered from EX trim onwards. With a cargo capacity of 39.2 cubic feet, the CR-V has an edge over its rivals. The rear 60/40-split seatback can be folded down to access 75.8 cubic feet of cargo space. The low and flat cargo floor makes it easy to load or unload items. For convenience, a power liftgate and a hands-free liftgate are available. The CR-V also offers a mirror with sunglass holder, door-pocket storage bins, lockable glove compartment, center console bottle holder for storage of articles.

Every midsize crossover in the comparison can accomodate five passengers. The Honda CR-V is the most practical midsize crossover with well-balanced interior dimensions. The CR-V leads in the cargo capacity department and even the second row legroom is very good. The Ford Escape offers slightly better second row legroom but its cargo space is much less than the CR-V. The Chevrolet Equinox offers good second row legroom but comes with the least cargo space.

Some of the key interior and infotainment features of the 2022 Honda CR-V are:

While the 2022 CR-V isn't the flashiest or classiest in this hotly contested segment, it's still one of the most satisfying and talented entrants - Car and Driver

The 2022 CR-V is long known for its head-turning and innovative SUV design, having received the last refresh for the 2020 model year. The front inverted trapezoidal headlamps and a rather compact front grille looks well-designed. The sleek LED fog lamps blend well with the design of the front bumper. The side profile looks elegant and rugged at the same time, courtesy of black cladding on the doors. The roof rails accentuate the SUV styling. The fifth-generation CR-V is offered in Sonic Gray Pearl, Aegean Blue, Metallic Crystal Black, Pearl Lunar Silver, Metallic Modern Steel, Metallic Obsidian, Blue Pearl Platinum, White Pearl and Radiant Red Metallic.

Every 2022 CR-V model comes standard with a long list of exterior features as well. These include an active shutter grille, roofline spoiler, fin-type roof-mounted antenna, and remote entry system. Though our recommendation is the EX trims which feature design enhancements including rear privacy glass, a security system, a power moonroof, LED fog lights, and heated power side mirrors with integrated turn indicators. Overall, the exterior dimensions and styling are well in-sync with each other and the midsize SUV is one of the better looking cars in this segment. The spied 2023 Honda CR-V model is a complete redesign, featuring slimmer LED headlamps, a longer wheelbase, a new grille with a honeycomb design, and new machine cut alloy wheels

The Honda CR-V has a shorter wheelbase, which makes it more agile and fun to drive. However, a longer wheelbase improves stability on the highways. The Nissan Rogue offers the best ground clearance and its very much appreciated in this segment. The curb weight of the Honda CR-V is not high and very much in line with the competition. The new 2023 Honda CR-V is longer and gets wider front and rear track, imrpoving its handling considerably.

Some of the key exterior features of the 2022 Honda CR-V are:

  • 17-19-inch aluminum alloy wheels
  • One touch power moonroof
  • Power tail gate
  • Roof rails
  • LED fog lights
  • LED headlamps (Touring)
  • Dual crome exhaust finishers (Touring)

Safety
9.0/10

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2022 Honda CR-V the highest overall safety rating of five out of five stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2022 CR-V the highest rating of Good in five crash tests and the second-highest rating of Acceptable in the side crash test. The Touring trim earned the highest rating of Good for very good visibility. The Honda CR-V received the highest rating of Superior for its standard front crash prevention systems.

The best thing about the CR-V is that it comes with Honda Sensing suite of driver-assistance features as standard. It includes Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning. The Blind Spot Information System is offered as standard from EX trim onwards. Also, multiple passive safety features like airbags and seat-belt reminder are standard across all the trims.

Some of the key 2022 CR-V standard driver-assistance and safety features are:

  • Brake assist
  • Auto high-beam headlights
  • Honda Sensing
  • Rearview camera
  • Blind-spot monitoring

Competition
8.5/10

2022 Honda CR-V vs. 2022 Chevrolet Equinox

The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox looks better than the Honda CR-V. Apart from this, Honda has better fuel economy ratings and better interior space. The 2022 CR-V's turbocharged engine provides more power and its CVT transmission is also better than the Equinox in terms of response and efficiency.

Both the Honda and Chevrolet midsize SUVs score well in the crash tests and have all the necessary safety features, the CR-V is a more trusted companion. The Equinox being pocket-friendly has an advantage here.

2022 Honda CR-V vs. 2022 Nissan Rogue

The 2022 Honda CR-V has a more attractive design language than the 2022 Nissan Rogue. The Rogue has only one engine option whereas the CR-V has two engine options. The CR-V has better fuel economy but is eqipped with a smaller fuel tank, leading to lower driving range.

The Nissan Rogue offers better acceleration and is equipped with a larger engine. The Honda CR-V offers better cargo space and second row leagroom. That being said, with a turbocharged engine and fuel economy, the CR-V has a cheaper price tag than Rogue and is hence our recommendation.

2022 Honda CR-V vs 2022 Ford Escape

The Honda CR-V and Ford Escape are powered by 1.5-liter engines but the CR-V is slightly more powerful. However, the Escape offers better acceleration in terms of 0-60 mph. Both the midsize crossovers offer same fuel economy as per EPA ratings.

The Ford Escape offers better driving range, courtesy of larger fuel tank. The Honda CR-V offers class-leading cargo space and better rear seat legroom as compared to the Escape. However, owing to better practicality and refinement, we would pick the CR-V over the Escape.

Final Verdict

The Honda CR-V has been dominating the compact SUV segment for ages now. Even though there are no significant changes this time, the 2022 CR-V is certainly a must-test option in the compact SUV segment. But having said that, we would suggest you wait for the new 2023 Honda CR-V model, as it is rumored to get a full redesign and a new hybrid engine that will produce more power and torque than the current generation. This engine is expected to surpass the current CR-V's excellent fuel economy too. According to the spy shots, it also gets a longer wheelbase, a flatter front end, and new machine-cut alloy wheels. So keep your fingers crossed, and do set your eyes on this one.

However, the shoppers looking for a new 2022 Honda CR-V should keep a close eye as Honda will launch special discounts, leases, and financing options to clear the stock as the next-generation debuts later this year.

Overall good, cabin has noticeable noise sometime, infotainment system buggy

Pros - Good mileage, seats are comfortable. Steering responsive and ride is smooth

Cons - Cabin could be noisy sometime. Mobile phone detection buggy, need to reboot infotainment system often

Some what worried about the oil dilution problem on CR-V, had look into RAV4, Equinox, Kona, CX3/5. But decided this one had the least problems On first visit, internet rep gave pricing sheet. Agreed to take the **RR alarm off (actually disabling it), without haggling. Gave further discount from updated pricing sheet, when paying deposit.
