Overview

The supremely impressive GMC Terrain has been refreshed for the 2022 model year. It does see quite a few changes including the discontinuation of the base SL trim, all the while introducing the all-new off-road-focused AT4 model. Along with this, the 2022 Terrain gets new front and rear fascias, three new exterior paint options, new 18 and 19-inch wheel designs, and new interior fabrics and trims. Inside, the SUV gets a new head-up display, while the infotainment system now comes with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability. Available at the earliest of fall-2021, the Terrain SLT trim will come with a new Tech Package.

The rest of the 2022 GMC Terrain is the same with a 1.5L turbocharged Inline-4, running point on the power front making 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque. The interior is smart in design and spacious and has what you need for a slightly premium price tag. However, the selling point of the car is the exterior which is as handsome as it gets for the small SUV segment. That said, The 2022 GMC Terrain is priced at a starting MSRP of $29,695, bringing it into direct competition with the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Honda CR-V.

Buying Advice

The GMC Terrain also comes with a good number of options, accessories, and packages which include the popular Convenience package, Hit the road package, infotainment package I and II which are available on the SLE and SLT trims, respectively, and lastly the GMC Pro Safety Plus package (advanced driver-assist features).

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Terrain is a mixed bag. It's handsome at a glance, and the sleek style, sharp (and quiet) interior and modern tech make it desirable - Edmunds

The 2022 GMC Terrain has quite a few changes including reducing the trims to two - SLE and SLT, whereas also adding a new model named AT4. Prices start at an MSRP of $29,695 (incl. the destination charges of $1,195). GMC does offer financing and leasing options for well-qualified buyers. You can lease one for $399 per month for 39 months with a mileage cap of 10,000 miles or can finance one for $404 per month for 72 months.

Money matters aside, the 2022 Terrain comes with a 1.5L turbocharged inline-4 making 170 hp and power goes to front wheels, AWD is optional. The interior features heated power-adjustable seats (SLT trim), automatic air conditioning, and an updated infotainment system with wireless connectivity. Safety features are many and include the GMC Pro Safety suite of safety features as standard equipment.

Buying Advice

Priced at an MSRP of $33,795 we do recommend buying the GMC Terrain SLT with the FWD system, as with the 170 hp engine the AWD system does not seem necessary, along with this you get better fuel economy. Plus on the interior, you get heated power-adjustable seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and leather upholstery as standard. We would recommend getting the GMC Pro Safety Plus package, tech package, and larger 19-inch wheels.

Features
7.0/10

The 2022 GMC Terrain comes in two trims from the 2021 model year - SLE and SLT, while the SL trim has been discontinued for the 2022 model year. The new AT4 and Denali models of the Terrain are reviewed separately. Prices for the Terrain start at an MSRP of $29,695 including destination charges of $1,195. The 2022 Terrain will be powered by a 1.5L turbocharged inline-4 and power will go to the front wheels in its standard configuration. For $4,000 more you can have the AWD drivetrain which will come with the same engine. There are also a few changes in 2022 Terrain as it has been given a slight refresh.

Fuel Economy
6.9/10

The 2022 GMC Terrain will reportedly get no changes in the fuel economy department from the 2021 model. The 2022 Terrain has an EPA estimated fuel economy of 25 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and a combined 27 MPG. With the AWD system, the fuel economy drops by 2 MPG on the highway and 1 MPG in combined.

The GMC Terrain comes with a 14.9-gallon fuel tank which allows it to have a combined range of 402 miles. However, the competition does have better MPG numbers and similar-sized fuel tanks which give it a better-combined range. The best is offered by the Toyota RAV4 which has a combined 435 miles of driving range.

Interior
6.9/10

A spacious and accomodating interior is let down by subpar build quality and a middling mix of materials - Car and Driver

The 2022 GMC Terrain comes with a few changes but that is reserved for the infotainment system, while the upholstery colors and interior trims are new. The interior has seating for 5-occupants. The front row seats are 6-way driver and 4-way front passenger, wherein both are manually adjustable, while the rest of the interior has cloth upholstery and single-zone automatic climate control.

The SLT trim gets heated 8-way power-adjustable driver and heated 6-way power-adjustable front passenger seats with perforated leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control with separate rear vents. The SLT trim also has a heated steering wheel. The 2022 GMC Terrain comes with a cargo capacity of 29.6 cu. ft.

The 2022 GMC Terrain comes with plenty of space in the interior and is similar to the competition. However, in terms of cargo space, the 2022 Terrain offers the least, the best being the Honda CR-V offering 39.2 cu. ft. The infotainment section does get new updates, but the screen sizes of 7.0-inches on the SLE trim and 8.0-inches on the SLT trim stay the same. The new features of the infotainment system include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard along with a built-in Amazon Alexa voice assistant along with the SLT getting the optional Tech Package which adds a new heads-up display. There is the option on the SLE trim to get the larger 8.0-inch system and will come with Navigation, which is an option on the SLT trim as well.

Other features of the infotainment include:

  • Wifi hotspot
  • USB ports
  • Optional Bose 7-speaker sound system
  • Voice commands
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • AM/FM/HD radio

Exterior
6.9/10

The 2022 GMC Terrain does get a minor refresh to the exterior. The front fascia does have a subtle modification with a new grille design and also new LED headlights. There are new LED taillights as well along with new 18-inch and 19-inch wheel designs and two new exterior colors - Marine Metallic and Cayenne Red Metallic, the third one is an AT4 exclusive.

The rest of the GMC Terrain is the same and will feature black lower body trim, deep-tinted rear glass, heated power-adjustable mirrors, roof rails, and fog lamps (halogen). Options for the exterior do include roof racks, SkyScape power sunroof, side steps, and a few more in the form of accessories.

Competition
6.0/10

2022 GMC Terrain vs 2022 Honda CR-V

The 2022 Honda CR-V comes with more power and does offer much better performance. The CR-V also has better fuel economy figures and has the most cargo space on offer among the competition. The CR-V is also more affordable by $3,000 making it the better option when compared to the GMC Terrain.

2022 GMC Terrain vs 2022 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 makes a lot more power and offers much better performance than the GMC Terrain. In terms of fuel economy and driving range, the RAV4 is the best out of the competition. The interior space is similar but has significantly more amount of cargo space than the Terrain. The RAV4 is priced approximately $2,000 lesser than the GMC Terrain, and like the CR-V and CX-5 is a better option.

Final Verdict

The 2022 GMC Terrain does come with a lesser-powered engine compared to the competition and also loses out in MPG figures (marginally) and driving range. However, The interior space is nice with good materials and good technology as well, but is lower than the competition and is priced higher than the competition. So if you are looking for a small SUV that is priced lower, has better performance, and is more practical, we do recommend having a look at any of the competition.
