Overview

Having received a massive refresh last year, GMC brings the 2022 Yukon with some minor changes including a tech upgrade. The 2022 Yukon gets a newly-standard 12.0-inch Driver Information Center display and a new infotainment interface that is built in partnership with Google. However, the Detroit-based company takes customer feedback seriously and introduces a Denali Performance Black Package on all Yukon models for the 2022 MY. Apart from this, customers looking for the off-road-focused AT4 model should rejoice as they can now equip their Yukons with the 420-hp 6.2L V-8 engine.

The top-range Yukon Denali now gets a previously optional power-sliding center console as standard fitment. Also, you can paint your Yukon with the new Redwood Metallic color. the new GMC Yukon remains mechanically unchanged and also keeps a high level of advanced driver assistance features as standard alongside a plethora of interior and infotainment features. As far as pricing goes, the 2022 Yukon starts at a base price of $51,600 for the base SLE with RWD and costs up to $72,500 for the Denali AWD trim.

Buying Advice

We believe that the mid-range SLT trim would be sufficient for most buyers. The reason behind choosing this trim is that it is less costly than the base model and adds features such as ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, and good quality audio system.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

"The Sierra pickup truck may be the heart of GMC, but the Yukon has always been the soul" - Motor Trend

The 2022 GMC Yukon continues to be offered in 4 trims: SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali, with prices starting from $51,600 (MSRP). The Yukon is a spacious full-size three-row SUV, and it has a bigger version Yukon XL that offers more legroom and a lot more cargo space. This GMC has a Chevy twin, the 2022 Tahoe which uses the same body-on-frame architecture as the Yukon.

The main competitors of the 2022 GMC Yukon in the segment are the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Nissan Armada. The Yukon embodies some really advanced safety features like Teen Driver Assist, Lane Change Warning, Automated Braking, and a lot more as part of the standard package and the 2022 model will be building up on all these features.

Buying Advice

We believe that the mid-range SLT trim would be sufficient for most buyers. The reason behind choosing this trim is that it is less costly than the base model and adds features such as ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, and good quality audio system.

Features

"It’s blessed with excellent powertrains, copious interior room for people and their baggage, a long roster of standard safety and luxury." - The Car Connection

The 2022 Yukon is available in four trim levels with a starting MSRP of $51,600 for the base SLE rear-wheel-drive model. The SLT trim begins at $58,400 while the off-road-oriented AT4 with standard AWD and magnetic ride control costs $66,100. The luxurious Denali already has Magnetic Ride Control as standard and $69,500 with the 2WD drivetrain. The SLE, SLT, and AT4 trims are powered by a 5.3L V8 engine as standard that brings out 355 horsepower while the Denali gets an exclusive 6.2L V8 engine that makes 420 hp. However, for 2022 AT4 gets an optional 6.2-liter V8 as well.

All engines are paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The GMC Yukon trims are available in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. Our favorite feature is the new 12-inch driver information display with an analog speedometer and rev counter. It’s standard from the base STL level.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The base engine 5.3L V8 for the RWD provides 16 MPG in the city and about 20 MPG on the highway. However, the AWD variant is a bit less efficient and gives 15 MPG in the city and 19 MPG on the highways. The bigger engine in the Denali trim gives 15 MPG in the city and 20 MPG on the highway for the RWD variant.

For the AWD variant, the MPG figures are reduced further by 1 MPG. The MPG figures are better than its previous models all thanks to its Dynamic Fuel Management System. This system allows the engine to turn off its cylinders when not required.

Although all of the 2022 GMC Yukon’s competitors hit the same ballpark in terms of the MPG figures, the 2022 Ford Expedition has an edge over others with a better range in the cities as well as in highways. So, if you are a buyer who is looking for better mileage then the 2022 Ford Expedition is a better choice for you.

Interior
8.0/10

" The new Yukon's interior is a significant step up from the fourth-gen model, but that's not to say there isn't room for improvement" - Motor Trend

The 2022 GMC Yukon sees a little interior change than its previous models - a tech upgrade for 2022 adds a 12.0-inch digital gauge display and a new infotainment interface as standard equipment. The materials used in the interior are more upscale while the dashboard is covered in soft-touch material. All the buttons and controls are finished in chrome. The steering wheel is butter smooth and all the buttons are also arranged symmetrically. The space in the front is good so there are issues for taller folks getting in and out of the car.

The 2022 GMC Yukon can seat 8 people in three rows. The overall space on the car has been increased by 40%. Cloth seats come standard which can be upgraded to genuine leather. The seats are very comfortable for long rides. The armrest is comfortable and wide enough for both the driver and the passenger. Towards the back, there is sufficient space for three adults.

Towards the third row, there is space for your children as for adults space is a bit less but still more than most of the SUVs. Coming to the infotainment system, every GMC Yukon gets a 10.2 -inch floating infotainment display. The display is of excellent quality and there is no screen glare issue even in bright sunlight. The display includes HD and satellite radio with seven USB and auxiliary ports.

It also has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in its tech suite along with wireless device charging. A dual-display rear media system will keep the passengers entertained. A 9 speaker BOSE sound system will take the party to the roads. Overall the entire interior layout of the car is excellent but could be better in terms of its premiums. The GMC Yukon kills the competition when it comes to interior space. Because the size of the car is very huge, it offers sufficient passenger space. Apart from this it also has a larger cargo trunk as compared to its rivals. Some notable interior features of the 2022 GMC Yukon are:

  • 10.2-inch floating touchscreen
  • HD and satellite radio
  • Seven USB ports
  • Nine-speaker Bose sound system
  • Wireless device charging
  • Wireless Apply CarPlay and Android Auto
  • The dual-display rear media system
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated power front seats
  • Power-adjustable heated steering wheel
  • Panoramic sunroof

"Coming to an upper-middle-class neighborhood near you: The 2021 GMC Yukon is richer and bigger, with details and a price tag to match" - The Car Connection

The 2021 model year of the GMC Yukon received a massive change in terms of the interior and exterior styling along with some advanced features. The 2022 model year has the same sense of style as that of the 2021 model year. The Denali trim adds LED headlamps and taillights with a large chrome grille. The chrome grille on the front is actually satin chrome that adds to its life. There are approximately 10,000 individual chrome parts used in the car overall that are claimed by GMC itself.

The grille has a very bold look and is one the meanest-looking front grilles on a car ever. The AT4 trim changes the chrome grille to black and matte black. It also includes a red tow hook in the front and a skid plate with an angle of 31 degrees that make off-roading easier. It also gets 20-inch tires that provide optimum grip on the road as well as on no roads.

The wheelbase of the 2022 Ford Expedition is the largest amongst all whereas the ground clearance is also the largest as compared to its competitors. This is very important for off-roading as it can easily pass through any obstacles. Some notable exterior features of the 2022 GMC Yukon are:

  • Front chrome grille
  • Satin chrome finished side skirtings
  • Dual Exhaust System With Dual Twin Polished Stainless Steel Tips
  • Horizontal Red Recovery Hooks
  • LED Fog Lamps

Safety

"The Yukon offers up to nine cameras for better outward vision and towing assistance and the Yukon can be fitted with adaptive cruise control and active lane control, as well as a rear camera mirror." - Thecarconnetion

The National Crash Test Agency NHTSA keeps a safety record of all the cars that roll on the streets in the US. For this, NHTSA conducts crash tests to determine the crashworthiness of the said vehicle. The 2022 GMC Yukon is yet to be crash-tested by NHTSA.But for the 2021 model year, NHTSA rates it an overall safety rating of 4 stars for its crashworthiness. This rating is assigned based on the other crash tests. For example, the 2021 GMC Yukon gets a 4-star rating for its overall frontal crash protection. IIHS is another trusted road safety organization associated with keeping a safety check on all cars on the streets.

Unlike NHTSA, IIHS is an independent private organization that conducts its own set of crash tests for the said car’s safety. The 2022 GMC Yukon was not one of their crash test subjects. Even the 2021 model year was not tested by the IIHS because the price of the car is very high and becomes difficult for an independent organization to perform crash tests for the same.

Some of the safety features of the 2022 GMC Yukon includes anti-lock brakes, stability, traction control, trailer-sway control, hill start assist front and rear parking sensors, front knee airbags, front second and third-row airbags along with full-length side curtain airbags, and active front head restraints. It also includes nine cameras for better outward vision. Some of the standout safety features of the 2022 GMC Yukon in a nutshell:

  • High-Definition surround vision camera
  • Standard Forward Collision Alert
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • High-strength side-door guard beams
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Active Lane Control
  • Automatic Emergency Braking

Competition
8.0/10

2022 GMC Yukon vs 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe

Coming from the same family genes, the 2022 GMC Yukon and the Chevrolet Tahoe have many things in common like the powertrain, chassis, etc. but are still different. The 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe has a more luxurious interior with more passenger space. So, if you can pay the extra price tag then the 2022 GMC Yukon is the better option to go.

2022 GMC Yukon vs 2022 Ford Expedition

The 2022 Ford Expedition is a direct competitor to the 2022 GMC Yukon from Ford Motors. The 2022 Ford Expedition is a subtle car like the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe with less price tag. It can do what the 2022 GMC Yukon can do but will not provide you the luxury just like the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe. So, the 2022 Ford Expedition can be a good choice if you don’t want the luxury and want to save some bucks.

2022 GMC Yukon vs 2022 Nissan Armada

The 2022 Nissan Armada is one of the most practical cars in the large SUV segment. The engine performance along with its speed is also a plus point for the 2022 Nissan Armada. The most important thing is that the 2022 Nissan Armada did not get a full redesign nor did the 2021 model year of the car. The 2022 GMC Yukon is more likely to be loved because of the looks of the car. So, the 2022 GMC Yukon is a better option if not the most practical option.

Final Verdict

The 2022 GMC Yukon has carried the styling from the completely redesigned 2021 model year but with more features. The 2022 GMC Yukon gives everything that you may need. If you are ready to pay the extra bucks, you won’t have any issues as it proves its worth and is a masterpiece. GMC did not take any chances and looks like it has killed its competition from what it seems now.
