Overview

The Sierra trucks are probably the longest living series by GMC and were first introduced in 1988, after which it got paired up with General Motors. Getting a whole new design in 2019, the fourth-generation GMC Sierra 1500 looks more rugged and strong than before. The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will be the same as the 2021 year model besides few changes done to the exterior and interior.

Buying Advice

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab has only one trim with two engine configurations. That’s why if you are looking for a model which not only has all the features of the base model but also puts out more power and decent performance, then the 5.3L V8 engine model is best for you as long as the higher price tag doesn’t bother you.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Even with a dated interior design, the Sierra 1500 will give comfort to the occupants with its spacious cabin. With adequate safety features, consumers can travel with ease. In today’s diminishing pickup truck market, the GMC Sierra 1500 competes against Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F-150, and RAM 1500, which are tough contenders in the segment. Although, the Sierra 1500 has great payload capacity and front row space as compared to rivals.

Features

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will be available in the Regular, Crew, and Double cab variants same as the 2021 model. We expect, 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will have 6 different trim levels: Base, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, and Denali, which is the topmost trim. The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab will come in only one base trim with two engine configurations: 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 and 5.3L EcoTec3 V8. RWD and 4WD are available for the 1500 Regular Cab.

There will be standard and long bed options available for the 2022 Sierra 1500 regular cab. The 5.3L V8 engine will have a price tag of $31,990 for the RWD powertrain, while $36,590 will be for 4WD. There are various packages like Sierra Value package, Convenience package, GMC Protection package, and many more which will add various features and upgrades to the base model.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

Since the engine remains the same for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, the fuel economy and MPG ratings will also be the same. The RWD Regular Cab model will have an average MPG of 16 in the city and 21 in the city. It has an impressive fuel tank capacity of 28 gallons, the same as the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab. Among rivals, 1500 Classic has the biggest fuel tank with a capacity of 32 gallons.

The F-150 has the smallest fuel tank, having only a 23-gallon capacity. Both GMC and Chevrolet have the same engine. Therefore, they both share a combined fuel economy of 17 mpg, which is the least among these fellow competitors. Then comes Ford, which has the highest combined fuel economy of 21 mpg while the RAM is following it with a combined fuel economy of 20 mpg.

Interior
8.5/10

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab will mostly have the same interior design as the 2021 model for the base trim, but we can expect few updates like overhauled center console and dash. Also, the old column shifter will be replaced by a new gear selector. Some standard features like a power driver seat, leather upholstery, power mirror, and cruise control will be carried over to the 2022 Regular Cab base model. Features such as rear-window defogger, power windows, deep-tinted glass, and hitch guidance, which were optional features in value-added packages, can come as standard features in the 2022 version.

For a work truck, the Sierra 1500 Regular Cab will have a perfectly balanced cabin that is mostly made of hard plastic to give all of the interiors good durability, whereas a soft-plastic piece is equipped around the infotainment screen. One major similarity within all the trims is the dashboard layout which is made to look just as rugged as the truck appears from outside. The seating surfaces are covered in a good-quality fabric that provides good support and seems built to last. The center console has cup-holders, few open pockets, and a closed storage bin that folds up to make space for another member in the cabin.

Moving on to the seats, the Regular Cab variant offers a seating capacity of 3, the same seating capacity is offered by all the opponents. Sierra 1500 provides more headroom and legroom than any of the rivals, while Chevrolet has the same values when it comes to headroom and legroom as Sierra 1500. Tradesman 1500 has the least front row space than any other in the competition. The cargo volume is largest for the GMC and its GM sibling Chevrolet, which is about 89.1 cubic feet.

RAM is last in the race again with just 61.5 cubic feet of cargo volume, while Ford has the second-largest cargo volume of 77.4 cubic feet. If we talk about the infotainment system, the base Regular Cab model of the 2022 Sierra 1500 will not be having major upgrades unlike other variants like Crew or Double cab models. These models will have a premium Bose sound system and dual-zone automatic climate and many other features for the top trims like Denali, AT4, SLT, and SLE.

Highlights of the infotainment features for Sierra 1500 are:

  • Satellite Radio
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi and Hotspot
  • USB port
  • 2 speaker audio system
  • 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto
  • 3.5" diagonal monochromatic Driver Information Center
  • Steering Wheel Audio Controls

Exterior
8.5/10

For 2022, the Sierra 1500 is also expected to have a new front and rear facia design. The possibility of having more exterior color options other than Summit White is also there. Having said that, the signature LED headlights with LED DRLs are styled aggressively, while the blacked front grille bordered with steel finished piece along with chrome front bumper with tow hooks in black brings a good contrast. Moreover, full black side mirrors and door handles also add up to the simple aesthetics.

The rear will have simple styling with a standard tailgate and LED taillights. The rear bumper gets the contrast-look as a part of it is finished in chrome, while the leftover part is painted in black along with a footstep provided on both sides to easily access the cargo area. Also, 17-inch silver paint wheels with Blackwall tires are equipped as standard on the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab.

The Sierra 1500 Regular Cab can be customized with a few available features like black front and rear bumper, cargo bed LED lighting, chrome mirror caps, heated power mirrors, GMC MultiPro tailgate with EZ lift assist, and vertical trailing mirrors with heated upper glass. The GMC and Chevy are basically twins with similar curb weight and dimensions, but the wheelbase of both trucks is only 139.56 inches, which is the least in the bunch. The RAM 1500 is the heaviest, longest, and tallest of all the trucks. On the other hand, Ford F-150 is the lightest and shortest pickup truck with a 75.2-inch height. It also has the highest ground clearance of 8.2 inches.

The highlights of the exterior features for GMC Sierra 1500 are:

  • 17-inch wheels
  • Power heated outside mirrors
  • LED headlights, DRLs
  • Black front grille
  • All season tires
  • Tinted glass windscreen
  • Chrome mirror caps

Safety
8.0/10

Safety ratings of the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab are not out yet, but with reference to 2021, we can have an idea of how the 2022 model is going to perform. The 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab has a 4-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. It has not performed well in frontal crash testing and roll-over testing, which earned 1500 Sierra only 4 stars in overall ratings in both categories. Also, the same Regular Cab layout has not yet been tested by the IIHS. The safety package that the current Sierra 1500 is equipped with will also be carried over to the upcoming model. Despite being a work truck, Sierra 1500 is equipped with safety features like a teen driver-assist, rear vision camera, 6-airbags, and StabiliTrak feature that provide electronic stability control and traction control. In addition to this, features like automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert with pedestrian braking, front, and rear park assist, and a few more are offered in different packages.

Highlights of the safety features for GMC Sierra 1500 include:

  • Tire Pressure Monitor
  • LED Daytime Running Lamps
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Forward collision alert with pedestrian braking (Optional)
  • Automatic emergency braking (Optional)

Competition
9.0/10

GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab vs. Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab

The Sierra and Silverado look like two different trucks from the outside, but on close inspection, both have the same interior, exterior dimensions, and also have the same powertrain options on their trims.

One major difference is that GMC has slightly better and long-lasting materials used on the inside, which is also the reason why these trucks are a bit costlier than their Chevrolet counterparts.

GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab vs. Ford F-150 Regular Cab

The Ford F-150 is more fuel-efficient and is less heavy than the Sierra 1500. Moreover, the F-150 also has better safety features when compared to what Sierra 1500 offers.

GMC is equipped with more payload capacity as well as more cargo volume than F-150. Therefore, the Sierra 1500 definitely has the upper hand as a work truck.

GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab vs. RAM 1500 Classic Regular Cab

RAM 1500 has a unified cabin design just like the Sierra 1500’s interiors. However, Sierra 1500 offers better infotainment and safety features on its pickup truck. The power produced by Sierra 1500 is quite less than what RAM 1500 produces, while the torque offered by Sierra 1500 is more than RAM 1500.

RAM 1500 not only has a bigger fuel tank but also offers a better combined fuel economy. Sierra 1500 beats the RAM 1500 in terms of payload capacity but falls short on towing capacity. As a result, RAM 1500 appears as a more favorable option than Sierra 1500.

Final Verdict

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 has a good payload and towing capacity, which are crucial for a work truck. Even though the interior is not modern and the engine is a gas-guzzler, the Sierra 1500 has the largest cargo volume than rivals. It also has sufficient safety features, in addition to this, GMC offers a good bunch of packages that equip this truck as per buyers’ demands. More torque is given by Sierra than its rivals. Therefore, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab is a good choice in a light-duty truck segment to bring home.
