2022 GMC Canyon

For the 2022 MY, GMC offers the Canyon Crew Cab in a couple of trims. The Elevation standard costs $28,700 and the Elevation costs $32,200. The truck is powered by a 2.5L inline-4 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Noteworthy standard features include high-strength steel pick-up box, power-assisted steering, Capless fuel fill, 7” infotainment display, 6-speaker audio, cruise control, 18" Black-painted aluminum wheels, and StabiliTrak system.

The Elevation brings upgraded and added features like a 6-way power driver seat, LED Foglamps, 8” infotainment display, leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted controls, and many more. You also get an option to further customize the truck with several available package options which include the Convenience and Elevation Premium Package amongst others.

Which Trim should you buy?

We recommend you buy the higher-placed Elevation trim. It comes both in 2WD and 4WD drivetrains, whereas the Elevation Standard comes in only RWD. Moreover, you get 6-way power-adjustable cloth seats, a bigger display, better headlights, and many more. Additionally, we recommend you fit the truck with the Convenience Package for improved performance through a better set of features.

Release Date

The 2022 GMC Canyon Crew Cab is already released and comes with some small changes over the previous model year. The order for the 2022 GMC Canyon lineup started on the 1st of July, 2021. 

GMC offers 3 engine options for the Canyon Crew cab. The base 2.5L inline-4 engine is mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Talking about the drivetrain, the Elevation Standard comes with only the 2WD option and the Elevation offers an option of the 4WD drivetrain. The engine generates 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque. This helps the truck hit 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds and cover a ¼ mile in 16.5 seconds. It has a towing capacity and payload capacity of 3,500 and 1,440 pounds respectively. The optional 3.6L V6 comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is less efficient but churns out more power. The V6 engine delivers 308 hp and 275 lb-ft torque. The V6 engine helps the truck hit 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds and a ¼ mile within 15.2 seconds. When properly equipped it can tow 7,600 pounds, which is the best in the lot.

The other 2.8L Duramax Turbocharged Diesel inline-4 engine is only available for the Elevation trim and it offers 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The diesel engine offers better towing potential, thanks to its higher torque output, and also has better mileage. The base engine feels smooth and the transmission is responsive. With the 3.6L V6 engine, power is readily available on tap and as soon as you slam the throttle it's immediately visible. The 8-speed transmission also works like butter. Apart from the impressive towing capacity, the V6 engine when complemented by the AWD drivetrain works wonders in challenging conditions.

One of the better things about the Canyon is the handling characteristics. We have recommended you buy the Elevation trim over the standard. Primarily, the reason behind it is that it can be had in a 4WD variant too. The 4WD system provides excellent traction over rough surfaces. The steering offers literally no feedback and may feel less disconnected but on highways, it is responsive and smooth. While going uphill or taking turns, body roll is very visible. In the city, it handles well. The suspension system is tuned for off roads; a little bit stiffer but they do soak up most bumps. To sum up, in short, the Canyon despite being a pick-up truck by DNA offers a comfortable ride quality.

The Ford Ranger SuperCrew is the most affordable pick-up and offers the most value for money among its rivals. While other trucks offer low power and torque, Ford downsized the engine and added a turbocharger to sweeten the deal and the truck now produces 270hp and 310lb.-ft of torque. Despite being powered by a larger engine, the power and torque figures are very feeble in Tacoma. However, rivals do offer V6 engines which can easily leave Ford behind to dust. Ford Ranger Crew Cab with its Ecoboost engine is the fastest to hit 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds.

The base engine on the 2022 GMC Canyon Crew Cab provides an adequate amount of power for meeting the daily needs easily. However, the lower power and performance in return helps decent fuel economy figures. The base Inline-4 motor manages to return 19 mpg and 25 mpg in the city and highways respectively. The V6 engine does offer better power but expects the fuel economy to drop by 3-4 mpg. With a 21-gallon fuel tank, the 2022 Canyon manages to deliver 399 and 525 miles on the city and highways respectively.

Ford Ranger is equipped with a turbo mill which not only helps it stand tall in power and performance but it also returns the best fuel economy in the lot. Canyon and Colorado Crew Cab offer decent fuel economy. Tacoma was naturally expected to offer better fuel economy as it is underpowered by quite a huge margin. Nevertheless, it is the least efficient as well, averaging 21 MPG. Being equipped with a large fuel tank that can hold 21-gallons, the GM twins offer the highest driving range at 525 miles on the highway.

The 2022 GMC Canyon Crew Cab is the deluxe sibling of Chevy’s Colorado and it is visible in the interior. The interior is mainly built of good-quality plastics. The headliner is wrapped with soft-touch materials of Dark Ash color and the seats come wrapped with Dark Ash Vinyl. The floor is carpeted both at the front and back as standard. The cabin can seat 5-people with an adequate amount of room. The Elevation Standard brings front bucket seats with 4-way power adjustment for the driver and 2-way manual adjustment for the front passenger. The rear seats are wide, restful, and well-cushioned. The rear seats can also be folded for additional space. 

The Elevation trim adds a 6-way power driver seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted controls, cruise control, remote keyless entry, Single-zone Automatic AC, rear window defogger, aluminum interior trim, and many others. The cargo box at the back depends on which model of the Canyon you invest your money on. In the extended cab variant, you get a 6-feet cargo box that offers a capacity of 49.9 ft3. GMC also offers a 5-feet box that lowers the cargo capacity and the curb-weight too.

All the pick-up trucks in the competition offer a 5-seating configuration with their crew cab. The GMC Canyon and Chevy’s Colorado offer the best passenger space both at the front and back. Whereas, Tacoma offers a cramped seat at the back. In terms of cargo capacity, the Canyon and Colorado offer the same 6-feet box which happens to be the biggest among all. Ford Ranger comes with a more balanced cabin and the best cargo space available of 43.3 cubic feet. Moreover, the turbo mill adds to the towing capacity.

Infotainment and multimedia inside the 2022 GMC Canyon Crew Cab depend on the trim you buy. The infotainment system fitted in the Elevation Standard’s cabin comes with 6-speaker audio which is twinned with a 7” touch LCD. Apart from these an AM/FM/MP3 stereo player, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth audio streaming, and HandsFree, SiriusXM, and Smart USB Charging come fitted.

When you look at the 2022 GMC Canyon Crew Cab for the first time, expect a brawny and handsome character that’s very pleasant to the eyes. Though the design language remains the same, the headlights and grille now exhibit more aggressiveness. It suits the truck's hefty personality. It comes with the best ground clearance which makes it the best off-roader and the smallest wheelbase resulting in better handling. However, the smaller wheelbase also compromises Tacoma’s ride quality, and being heavier results in increased body roll. On the contrary, the Canyon and Colorado offer balanced exterior dimensions that look seasoned. They sport the longest wheelbases of 128.3 inches, but their ground clearances of 8.4 inches feel rather short when compared to the rivals.

GMC’s Canyon is based on the GMT31XX platform. The truck’s chassis comprises a unibody structure that is primarily made of steel and aluminum. The chassis is coupled with capable suspensions that help in stabilizing the truck and reduce shocks on bad roads. 2022 Canyon hasn’t been tested either by the NHTSA or IIHS. 2021 ratings throw light towards respectable ratings. GMC Canyon is the deluxe version of the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab. Both these trucks share the same engines, exterior and interior dimensions, and safety features. However, the Canyon offers a better set of features and better quality of materials. It also offers a diverse set of additional packages and optional features. If you are on a tight budget, we recommend Colorado. But we would put our money on the Canyon because of the premium touch.

2022 GMC Canyon Crew Cab vs 2021 Ford Ranger SuperCrew

The 2021 Ford Ranger SuperCrew is the best choice among all the midsize pick-ups. Being significantly cheaper than all the others, the Ranger is the best deal here. The turbocharged engine offers the best power and massive torque. It has the best towing and payload potential. The turbocharged engine offers the best MPG numbers that add to the practicality. Being lighter and smaller than the others, it’s a fun-to-drive truck and offers good handling. Most importantly, Ford offers the best set of standard Driver Assist Programs and Safety Features that are missing in the others. 

2022 GMC Canyon Crew Cab vs 2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab

We will suggest you buy the Canyon because it is a more practical choice than the Tacoma. The engine inside Tacoma is the weakest of all here. It not only misses out on power and performance but despicably the MPG numbers too. The materials used in Tacoma’s cabin lack quality and the materials both outside and inside feel cheap. Moreover, the Canyon has better J.D. Power ratings compared to the Tacoma. So, it’s a clear victory for the Canyon.

The 2022 GMC Canyon Crew Cab doesn’t bring any significant changes for the 2022 MY. The base engine does well but the 3.6L V6 can be fitted for better purposes. The vehicle looks handsome and the cabin inside can accommodate 5 people with a good amount of room to offer. Talking about safety, the Canyon has good ratings and a respectable amount of safety features. The resale value is respectable, so it is an excellent choice among mid-size pickups.
