Overview

The 2022 Jeep Gladiator comes yet again with no changes whatsoever to what we saw for the first time in 2020. Although prices of the 2022 Jeep Gladiator have seen a considerable bump. The base model sees a price increase of $335 while the Overland, Rubicon, and Mojave trims see a price bump of $2,020. With this, the 2022 Jeep Gladiator prices range between $35,315 to $47,260, excluding a $1,595 destination charge. While the updated model is expected to hit the dealership by the first quarter of 2022.

The Jeep Gladiator is a unique pickup that amalgamates the prowess of a Jeep Wrangler and the practicality of a pickup truck. The 2022 Jeep Gladiator sees the same set of engines as last year. Also, the Gladiator offers an array of personalization options that have been carried although there is only one bed and cabin choice. But just based on its off-road prowess and a spacious cabin, will it be able to keep the sales chart on fire? Let's find out in this review.

Buying Advice

Keeping the purpose of a typical Jeep Gladiator buyer in mind we would recommend the Rubicon trim solely for the factory-fitted off-road hardware along with better creature comfort than the base model.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Jeep Gladiator will inherit the brand’s reputation of rugged and skilled off-roading. From iconic 7-slot grille design to removable body panels, from round headlights to massive fender flares, the Jeep Gladiator is nearly identical to aggressive Wrangler and it too can reach out to beaten tracks for ascertaining adventures. Coming in an almost similar package as last year, the 2022 Jeep Gladiator Crew Cab will once again go head-on against the likes of Ford Ranger SuperCrew, Honda Ridgeline Crew Cab, and Toyota Tacoma Double cab.

Features
6.0/10

The 2022 Jeep Gladiator will be available in four main variants namely Sport, Overland, Rubicon, and Mojave. Other than these main trims there are several special editions and anniversary edition trims available too. A few of them worth mentioning are the Sport S, Willys, and 80th Anniversary Edition trim all based on the base Sport trim and come with their unique exterior design and offers a bevy extra features on the inside, usually seen on higher trims.

The entry-level Sport trim is expected to carry a sticker price of above $35,000, and the range-topping Mojave trim is expected to be priced over $47,000. While a fully loaded Jeep Gladiator in the top two trims could easily breach the sixty grand figure.  All the variants come with a 5-foot cargo bed and four-wheel drive as standard. The V6 gasoline engine comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, while an eight-speed automatic is optional.

The V6 turbo-diesel engine is available as an option on all except Mojave trim. Although going for the turbo-diesel V6 also necessitates adding the eight-speed automatic transmission. Other than the standard features listed below Jeep also offers a wide range of optional features either standalone or bundled in the form of packages. Optional features include a premium Alpine sound system, Class IV tow hitch, leather-trimmed seats, LED headlights, etc.

While optional driver assistance features available on the 2022 Gladiator include rear parking sensors, forward collision mitigation, blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise control, etc.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2022 Jeep Gladiator carries forward the same engine as last year so we expect the EPA ratings of the 2021 Jeep Gladiator to continue this year too. The Gladiator when had with the manual gearbox returns 16 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highways While when had with the automatic gearbox it returns 17 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway. This Jeep pickup gets a 22-gallon fuel tank that delivers the practical range to go over long off-roading sessions or haul loads through inter-state travels.

If the economy is the priority while buying a new pick-up, then the Ford Ranger delivers impressive figures along with balanced power and performance. The other rivals are not far, yet the Jeep Gladiator comes in the last spot in terms of economy.

Interior
5.0/10

The 2022 Jeep Gladiator isn't expected to get any significant changes to the rugged interior styling. The Gladiator will carry over the same subtle styling along with great functionality and convenience. The interiors will feature sturdy and build to last materials used and at the same time offer, impeccable creature comforts to match leading rivals. The cabin is spacious and roomy, and one can easily remove the door and roof panels to have an open-air cabin experience.

The infotainment system will remain unchanged, which means it will feature a 5-inch screen as standard, which gets upgraded to an 8.4-inch screen with UConnect 4C on the Overland and above trims. The standard infotainment is a pretty basic unit while the 8.4-inch unit is the best in the segment. With easy to navigate menu and intuitive interface. The UConnect 4C unit comes with navigation and also features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, SiriusXM, and more.

The 2022 Jeep Gladiator being based on a proper SUV has the most spacious and roomy cabin among all the pickup trucks here. The closest to it in terms of space is the Honda Ridgeline followed by the Ford Ranger. As for the cargo space in the bed, the Ford Ranger offers the best 43.3 cubic feet followed by the Gladiator offering 35.5 cubic feet of cargo volume.

As for the cargo bed, the Jeep Gladiator features a 60.3-inches long, 44.8-inches wide, and 33.9-inches deep cargo bed. The cargo bed has a payload capacity of minimum of 1,105 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 1,700 pounds.

Interior Features::

  • Alpine Premium Sound System
  • Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control
  • Heated Front Seats
  • Wireless charging
  • Auto-dimming inside rearview mirror
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel

Exterior
7.0/10

The Jeep Gladiator was introduced as a fresh design that instantly grabbed the spotlight. The 2022 Jeep Gladiator will retain the same rough and rugged styling which is majorly inspired by the Wrangler sibling. The front will feature the same round headlights and the iconic 7-slot grille, muscular front fenders, and burly front bumper. The side stance will reflect the Wrangler stance with an extra cargo bed stuck to the rear.

Like the Wrangler, the 2022 Jeep Gladiator will also allow the buyers to remove the door and roof panels as well as fold down the front windshield. The tailgate has a big “Jeep” brand emblem with big rear bumpers and integrated footsteps. We are expecting Jeep to introduce more options to personalize the Gladiator.

The 2022 Jeep Gladiator will retain its robust and aggressive styling and the buyers that’d be looking for the Wrangler resemblance will be able to enjoy the added versatility of hauling loads. As the table shows, the Gladiator offers the best ground clearance and a class-leading wheelbase, but it’s also the heftiest in the lot.

Exterior Features:

  • Convertible Hardtop & Softtop
  • 33-inch Falken all-terrain tires
  • High Strength Steel Frame
  • DANA 44 Solid Axles
  • Heated and power side mirrors
  • Power Retractable Running Boards
  • LED headlights and taillights

Safety
9.0/10

The 2022 Jeep Gladiator hasn’t been announced with any addition to the safety feature, and it will remain unchanged as the previous model year. It will also carry over the same platform and chassis as the 2021 model. Although the same hasn't been fully crash-tested by NHTSA while IIHS hasn't tested it at all. The 2021 Gladiator scored a 4 out of 5 stars rating in the frontal crash test and a 3 out of 5 stars rating in the rollover mitigation test of NHTSA. The same ratings are expected for the 2022 Jeep Gladiator.

Safety Features:

  • Automated emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warning with active braking
  • Rear cross-path detection
  • Park-sense rear park assist
  • Parkview rear backup camera
  • Trailer sway control system

Competition

2022 Jeep Gladiator Crew Cab vs 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab

The 2022 Jeep Gladiator offers outstanding power and performance and is reputed for being rugged and impressive on beaten tracks. But the Toyota Tacoma is no different in capabilities and prowess but it's still underwhelming in comparison to the Gladiator. The Tacoma with a V6 is quicker than the Gladiator (Tacoma being significantly lighter than the Gladiator).

The interiors of the Jeep pickup are more spacious and roomy, especially in the rear. The Gladiator is rough and rugged while the Tacoma can be equipped with extensive soft-touch materials for more premium attire.

2022 Jeep Gladiator Crew Cab vs 2021 Honda Ridgeline Crew Cab

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline is competitively priced and offers neck-to-neck rivalry in power aspects. But the buyers will find the Ridgeline more upscale and comfortable, while the Gladiator attracts eyes with its clean yet rugged styling.

The Ridgeline has less ground clearance, so it won’t permit tackling steep boulders or rocky tracks as easily as the Gladiator.

2022 Jeep Gladiator Crew Cab vs 2021 Ford Ranger SuperCrew

The Ford Ranger and its puny turbo engine block offer challenging figures, and it’s one of the quickest pickups in the segment. The Ranger is also empowered with the better towing capacity to the Gladiator and offers impeccable fuel economy.

But the Ranger fails to be as airy as the Gladiator is, but the shorter wheelbase makes it more maneuverable than the Jeep’s rugged pickup. Overall the Ranger is a well-rounded pickup which can be had as a daily driver too.

Final Verdict
7.5/10

The 2022 Jeep Gladiator is an exclusive choice in the pickup segment, for its unmatched power, generous cabin space, and Jeep pedigree. No other rival in the segment can boast of a better off-roading capability, at least in its base form. But Gladiator isn't without its set of cons and the first one being its brawny engine offering the least gas mileage which keeps its running costs on the higher side. Also, there is only one body and cab configuration, which means a lesser suite of features and options. So one might need to sort out the priorities and make sure the pros weigh more than the cons before going for the 2022 Jeep Gladiator.

Corvette owner to Jeep gladiator. Very happy which is saying something.

Pros - ["The miles per gallon. The diesel model I get 29 mpg. Verses 13-15 in the gas engine model.", "Towing power. Capable of Towing over 7000 lbs gvwr."]

Cons - ["Takes def fluid. However you can delete.", "Should offer a package with lift and tires already installed, as well as bigger gear in the rear end. Over all the vehicle is amazing!"]

The room of my 2014 Chevy Corvette just wasn't cutting it. I didn't think anything would be the answer, at least that I would be happy with. I have always liked jeeps, so I started browsing models. I liked the utility features of the gladiator having the truck bed. I test drove the gas model. Not too shabby, but just wasn't thrilled about it. As I walked to the car after the test drive, I noticed...
