Overview

Nissan has finally revealed the US variant of the third-generation Frontier pickup truck. For 2022 MY, the brand has introduced a totally redesigned Frontier for America. This one offers better performance, capabilities, comfort as well as technology. The 2022 Nissan Frontier gets a modern design as it is updated from the ground up. It still sits on the Nissan F-Alpha platform but is revamped to look distinct against the other compact pick-up trucks in the segment.

The modern design is inspired by the Nissan Armada SUV but this one seems durable and has the better capability. With its debut, it is already the most stunning pickup truck in the segment. Not just the exterior, the interior is upgraded with premium materials and advanced tech for you. The company has changed the whole game as it now offers the standard latest features for your entertainment and safety.

Buying Advice

For the year 2022, we recommend the Nissan Frontier SV trim as it adds more convenience and additional features for a justified price. However, pick-up trucks are used-based and we think that you can have other options as your daily use pick-up in the popular Nissan Frontier lineup. The PRO-4X is also a good choice for pickup buyers.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The design reminds us of Nissan's racing history. The 2022 Nissan Frontier will be offered in the same 4 trim levels. The Crew Cab version will be offered at a starting price of $29,000 for the base S trim and is expected to go up to $39,000 for the top Pro-4X trim. The all-new Frontier will compete with the same rivals such as the Chevrolet Colorado, and the Toyota Tacoma, and the GMC Canyon.

Features
6.0/10

The Nissan Frontier is available in two basic body designs, namely the Crew Cab and the King Cab. These are divided into 3 trims, with the S trim that just costs around $28,900, the SV trim that is expected to be priced at $29,900, and the off-road capable Pro-4X, which is a 4x4, and the Crew Cab chassis, clocks in at $38,500.

We Recommend

For the year 2022, we recommend the Nissan Frontier SV trim as it adds more convenience and additional features for a justified price. However, pick-up trucks are used-based and we think that you can have other options as your daily use pick-up in the popular Nissan Frontier lineup. The PRO-4X is also a good choice for pickup buyers.

2022 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Price

The all-new third-generation Nissan Frontier will be offered at a higher price than the previous models. The price is not confirmed yet. Still, the base S trim Crew Cab will cost you at least $28,900. The SV Crew Cab will be available for $29,900. For the long-wheelbase version of the SV Crew Cab, you will have to pay $32,000.

To avail of the optional 4WD system, you have to shell out an extra $2,500 to $3,000. The top of the line Pro-4X trim is offered only in the short wheelbase version and offers a standard 4WD system. It will take the price up to $38,500. The price will be worth it, as Nissan took care of the previous shortfalls.

2022 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Release date

The 2022 Nissan Frontier is spread across four trim levels. As it is the all-new third generation, Nissan will definitely have a grand launch for the Frontier. Nissan has not mentioned the exact date for the release. However, we can expect it to arrive at the dealerships this summer. Let's hope that the Frontier doesn't seem overpriced against other rivals.

The Crew Cab version will gather better attention as it has the Pro-4X trim. It offers the most features among other trims. You get standard features for safety, entertainment, comfort, and even the 4WD drivetrain. The appearance is also unique as this trim is designed with sporty design and color schemes.

Fuel Economy
6.6/10

With its standard V-6 engine, the 2021 Frontier offers a decent economy. As the engine is being carried over, the 2022 Frontier will deliver the same economy. It offers 18 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on the highway, and 20 MPG combined. However, the base cylinder engines on the rivals offer a slightly better economy. Still, the Frontier has a competitive economy. With its 21.1-gallon fuel tank, it offers more than 500 miles on the highway. The upcoming model may offer a bigger fuel tank.

The Chevrolet Colorado and the Toyota Tacoma have better fuel economy than the Frontier. No doubt the Frontier has the best torque management as it is powerful yet fuel-efficient. For a V-6 engine, Nissan is really competitive.

Interior
5.0/10

For a long time, the Nissan Frontier remained unchanged with its dated interior. With the 2022 update, you will get a next-level interior crafted with premium materials. The cabin is now sportier with a new design scheme and modern ergonomics. The controls are conveniently placed around the driver.

2022 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Front Row Seats

The steering offers multiple controls for your convenience. The driver's cluster seems advanced and will offer a digital display for you. Now you have a smart 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen that has the latest entertainment and assistance features such as Apple car play and Android auto.

The comfort level is enhanced with the zero-gravity front bucket seats. The seats offer up to 6-way power adjustments and heating functions. The Crew Cab version will offer a spacious cabin with up to 5 person seating capacity and plenty of room at the back.

The Pro-4X trim will offer better interior quality with synthetic leatherette upholstery. The previous models used to offer average cabin quality which used to work in the favour of other pick-up trucks in the segment.

2022 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Infotainment System

Now the Frontier is way better than the rivals. The rear seat space was already best in class. The headroom and shoulder room are really comfortable. We can expect better legroom with the upcoming Frontier. Some modern interior features in the 2022 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab are:

  • Cruise Control
  • Manually Adjustable Driver’s seats
  • Heated Front Seats
  • Outside Temperature Gauge
  • PRO-4X trim has 8-way power-adjustable seats
  • Auto-dimming Rearview mirror
  • Bluetooth streaming
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • Satellite Navigation
  • PRO-4X has a 10-speaker Rockford Fosgate sound system

Exterior
7.0/10

The exterior is updated from the ground up to offer a modern and a never seen before styling. The Frontier has gone under extreme transformation to look rad than ever. The huge front fascia is updated with massive DRLs and a grille that resembles the Titan pick-up truck. The massive bumper has sleek fog lamps with air ducts. The appearance gets better with the off-road valance panel.

The 2022 Nissan Frontier sits on a rigid chassis borrowed from its long-running predecessor. The structure is heavily modified to offer better strength, thanks to high-strength steel and advanced standards of Nissan manufacturing that tests its vehicles rigorously for the safety of the structure and the passengers.

The side profile is stylish with simple design lines and massive wheels with 16 standard and optional 17-inch alloy wheels with chrome treatment. The rear fascia looks great with the LED tail lamps and Frontier badge’s rear cargo door. You have two wheelbase options to choose from. The Crew Cab version offers slimmer rear doors.

The 2021 Nissan Frontier is the heaviest pickup truck in the segment with its bulky powertrain. The same will be the case with the 2022 model. In terms of size, the Frontier is supposed to get bigger. The Frontier has amazing off-road capabilities with its 8.7-inch ground clearance. You have two wheelbase options with different cargo bed sizes. Some highlights of the exterior features include:

  • Moonroof on the top-spec trim
  • Auto-dimming headlights
  • Multi Projector headlamps
  • Aggressive hood design
  • Spring suspension with shock absorbers
  • The offroad friendly exterior even on base-spec trim

Safety
6.0/10

The all-new Frontier offers Nissan safety shields that include safety features such as a 360-degree surround-view monitor, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, rear automatic braking, intelligent cruise control, and much more.

The previous-generation Nissan Frontier was rated 4 Stars by the NHTSA where it scored 3 Stars safety in the frontal impact and rollover. However, the side is rated 5 stars for its strength. The 2021 Frontier was further tested by the IIHS where it scored Marginal and Good ratings for different parameters. The 2022 Safety features offered in the Nissan Frontier are:

  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Force Distribution (EBD)
  • Traction Control
  • Vehicle Dynamics Control
  • 6-standard Airbags
  • Zone Body Construction

Competition

2022 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab vs 2021 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab

The Nissan Frontier is updated for good to deliver better performance and capabilities. The design and features are pretty impressive.

The Chevrolet Colorado is more of a reliable pickup truck with basic performance and builds quality. The Nissan Frontier stacks up really well with a better cabin experience and modern amenities.

2022 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab vs 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab

The Nissan Frontier is now equipped with advanced tech for safety and entertainment. Nissan has updated the Frontier to compete with the other rivals in the market.

The Toyota Tacoma gives tough competition to the Frontier in terms of features. However, the Frontier takes over when it comes to performance and durability.

2022 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab vs 2021 GMC Canyon Crew Cab

To offer a better experience, the Nissan Frontier now offers a premium cabin design where the top Pro-4X trim has luxury amenities.

The GMC Canyon is the luxury version of Colorado with its better space and comfort levels. Yet the Frontier beats it with its all-new tech-savvy cabin and the powerful V-6 engine under the hood.

Final Verdict

With better capabilities and performance, the pickup trucks are expected to deliver durability. That's what Nissan is doing with the all-new 2022 Frontier. Other than being a stand-out modern pickup truck, it is well equipped. The base engine outputs the maximum horses in the whole segment. All the trims offer an optional 4WD system for off-road capabilities. The Frontier has up to 6,700 lbs of towing capacity. If you want a pickup truck that offers everything you need, the Frontier is the right choice for you.
