Overview

The 2022 Nissan Armada is still a formidable full-size SUV that is brought to you with minimal updates this time around. With as many as 5 trim options and multiple configurations to opt from, Nissan introduces a single update in the form of a one-touch function for the power-folding third-row with the 2022 Armada Platinum trim. With a $600 increase in base price from the 2021 Armada that gave us the fanciest Midnight Edition trim, now comes included with heated front seats in the 2022 Armada interior. On the specs front, the on-sale Armada 2022 gets only a single powertrain option of a 400 hp 5.6L V8 engine, and a decent estimated combined fuel economy of 15 MPG with the basic RWD setup.

2022 Nissan Armada Buying Advice

The best trim of the lineup is certainly the 2022 Armada Platinum variant, which is priced at $65,900. The reason being, that it saw significant exterior modifications with regard to its design and also on the feature front last year, which is being carried forward into this year. Picking up which Older Model is best for you comes down to a number of reasons, one of which is your budget. For a rather small dip in price, you can opt for the 2021 Armada, which got a completely new exterior design, and plenty of active safety features as standard. Further, the 2018 Armada also seems to be a viable option.

It comes with a finetowing capacity of 8500 pounds but loses out on that front with the 2022 Ford Expedition that manages to tow up to 9300 lbs. The interior is comforting but isn't as spacious as the competition offers, even though the Nissan Armada can seat up to 8 people inside. Also, the Armada's cargo space on offer isn't satisfactory, when compared to the likes of the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe. Furthermore, the other competitor in the segment, the 2022 Toyota Sequoia, has its set of pros but fails to hold up well when it comes to performance numbers, with its 381 hp V8 engine.

2022 Nissan Armada for sale

The 2022 Nissan Armada starts at a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $49,500, excluding a destination charge of $1250 for the entry-level S trim. The next-in-line Armada SV trim retails at $53,500 and can be had with an additional SV Appearance Package, that adds 20-inch wheels, LED foglights, and more. Stepping onto the SL trim, for the price of $57,310, will get you captain's chairs instead of bench seats. The fairly new Armada Midnight Edition carries a price tag of $59,300 and adds more premium exterior and interior fitments over the SL trim. The AWD variant for all the models comes at a premium of $3000. The current existing lease deals range from $709 per month for a period of 36 months, excluding $6900, which is to be paid at signing. Moreover, the average Armada Used car listed prices for shades such as White, Silver, and Black range from anywhere between $15,000 to $45,000.

Buying Advice

The top-of-the-line Platinum model starts at $65,000 and gets several active safety features, including traffic sign recognition, intelligent rearview mirror. It also gets other features like 22-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, climate-controlled front seats, power recline & foldable third-row seats, quilted leather upholstery, tri-zone climate control, and a lot more.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Nissan Armada is offered with four trims in its lineup and is priced between $52,600 and $68,500. Despite having two drivetrains to pick from, the 2022 Armada gets only a single powertrain option, a 5.6L 8-cylinder engine. It further offers an above-average 8500-pound towing capacity and is set back by its below-average fuel efficiency return.

On the inside, the Armada is quite spacious, though not the best in class. It faces a lot of rivalry from the competitors with regard to the interior features and cargo space. It offers the least in terms of cargo measuring just 16.5 cubic feet. The exterior design for the 2022 model year gives it a modern look, in terms of dimension there isn't any significant change from the previous year. It faces rivalry from the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe, the 2022 Ford Expedition, and the 2022 Toyota Sequoia.

Fuel Economy
6.7/10

All Armadas are powered by the same V-8 engine and automatic transmission, a combination that makes the Nissan less fuel efficient than most of its rivals - Car and Driver

The Nissan Armada continues to get a big V8 engine compared to some of its rivals which get more efficient turbocharged engines with lower capacity. As expected with the bigger engine, fuel economy figures are among the lowest in its class. The 2022 Armada is rated at an EPA estimate of 13 MPG in the city and 18 miles to the gallon out on the highway. Despite having a big V8 engine and making the most power output, the Armada is very economical with a combined rating of 15 MPG. The Armada also gets a large tank at 26 gallons, which gives it an impressive highway range of 494 miles, while the city range is limited to 338 miles.

Rivals like the 2022 Ford Expedition use a more efficient Turbocharged Ecoboost engine with a combined rating of 20 MPG, giving it a range of 450 miles, while both the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe and the 2022 Toyota Sequoia offer similar V8 engines. The 2022 Expedition is the most efficient of the 3 with a combined efficiency of 20 MPG, while the Toyota Sequoia is only capable of putting out 14 MPG.

Interior
8.0/10

"A cushy and spacious interior supplements the Armada's classy outer shell." - Car and Driver

The Nissan Armada received a comprehensive update to its interiors with the 2021 refresh. The 2022 Armada interior is very spacious and comfortable with seating for up to 8 passengers. Like most SUVs in this class, the third row is best reserved for children, and that too for shorter journeys. Getting into the third row is a breeze with one-touch folding for the second row. Interior space will remain the same as the previous model year, with plenty of space in all three rows.

The power-folding third row is available on the higher trim levels for added convenience. The quality level is good with plenty of soft-touch materials and a well-laid-out dashboard. The floating 12.3-inch infotainment system is placed at the top and is easily reachable with plenty of features on offer, including NissanConnect services. All the SUVs in the competition come with a seating capacity of 8.

The SL and higher trims also get optional captain seats in the second row for $650. The Platinum trim is particularly luxurious with quilted leather seats, more wood accents, and ambient lighting. All controls are ergonomically placed and easy to access. All models get built-in navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, Android Auto, and wireless Apple CarPlay as standard. We also get wireless Android Auto in the 2022 model like most of its rivals. The higher Armada trims also get a 13-speaker Bose sound system along with a rear-seat entertainment system that features dual 8-inch displays.

Exterior
5.0/10

The 2022 Nissan Armada looks rugged and handsome, thanks to the recent refresh which gave it a more prominent front-end design with a new grille, fender, bumper, LED headlights, and taillights with C-shaped DRLs, and an angular rear windshield that makes it look more proportional. Because of the recent updates, the 2022 Nissan Armada is expected to get the same styling with some minor updates here and there. In terms of dimensions, the full-size Armada SUV weighs 5,995 lbs and stands 9.2 inches above the ground.

The cargo space will remain the same as there are no expected exterior dimension changes. With the updated styling, the Armada looks more modern, bringing it in line with the competition. The overall design still looks boxy with some modern touches thrown in. It still doesn’t compare to some of its rivals like the Lincoln Navigator or Chevrolet Tahoe, but the updated front end does improve the styling considerably.

Safety
8.0/10

With the 2021 refresh, the Nissan Safety Shield 360 system became standard on all variants. We can expect the 2022 Nissan Armada to be a carryover model considering the recent refresh has made it competitive for a few more years. Higher Armada trims get features like an intelligent rearview monitor, trailer sway control, backup intervention, surround-view camera, and traffic sign recognition.

Unfortunately, both the IIHS and NHTSA haven’t tested the Armada yet. The 2020 model, which gets the same chassis and platform, received the lowest rating in its class, with just 4 stars out of 5 in the NHTSA tests. Hopefully, Nissan has improved its safety with the 2021 refresh.

Standard advanced safety features include:

  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane intervention
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Blindspot warning
  • Blindspot intervention
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Rearview monitor
  • Front and rear sonar system
  • High beam assist

Competition
6.0/10

2022 Nissan Armada vs 2022 Ford Expedition

With a more efficient and powerful Ecoboost engine and better towing and off-road capabilities, the Ford Expedition continues to be the best in the segment. The Expedition gets a lot more cargo capacity at 57.5 cubic feet and has better packaging on the inside, with plenty of space even on the third row. The Expedition also gets a long-body Expedition Max model for added practicality, unlike the Nissan Armada. For 2022, the Expedition is slated to receive a Mach-E sourced much-improved infotainment system that will trump the Nissan Armada.

2022 Nissan Armada vs 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe

Like the Nissan Armada, the Chevrolet Tahoe also received significant updates for the 2021 model year, which also includes a new Diesel powertrain. Both SUVs get similar interiors with plenty of features on offer. The Chevrolet Tahoe also offers a choice of two V8 engines other than the Diesel powertrain. The Tahoe is also more efficient than the Armada with an advanced 10-speed transmission, coming out to be a better choice.

2022 Nissan Armada vs 2022 Toyota Sequoia

Unlike the Nissan Armada, the Toyota Sequoia is in much need of an update. The Sequoia is also a lot less efficient with a lower tow rating of just 7,400 lbs, limiting practicality. However, the Toyota Sequoia continues to be the most reliable SUV in its class and the least depreciating. The 2022 Sequoia is slated to get a completely redesigned exterior, improved interiors, and more safety features, which will make it a lot more competitive.

Final Verdict

Even though the 2022 Nissan Armada will be a carryover model with minor updates, it is still a very good option for customers looking for a comfortable and practical SUV. The Armada V8 engine offers plenty of performance while also being very efficient, and offers an impressive towing capacity of 8,500 lbs. With a plethora of features on offer including the Nissan Safety Shield 360, the Armada continues to be a decent option in its class and segment.
