Overview

The 2022 Ford Expedition gets a mid-cycle refresh for the 2022 model year. Both the interior and exterior get a styling update along with newly added features like Ford's BlueCruise hands-free semi-autonomous driving. It is also revealed that it will also get the 15.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen also seen in the Mustang Mach-E as optional. Moreover, there is a new Expedition Timberline trim that gets some off-road hardware like 33-inch all-terrain tires and some exterior design additions too.

2022 Ford Expedition Buying Advice

The updated Ford Expedition has become an even more exciting prospect for many buyers. However, the higher starting price might be a concern for some buyers. Therefore, opting for a used Ford Expedition will save you big money considering the high depreciation of the full-size SUVs. Buying a 2018 Ford Expedition that marked the beginning of the current generation should be the preferred choice as it can be bought at a discounted price.

The rest of the Ford Expedition is expected to be carried forward from the 2021 model year including the 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 making 375 hp as standard and 440 hp on the Platinum trim. The 2022 Expedition now also comes with a unique Stealth Performance package, which delivers maximum on-road performance. The 2022 Expedition will compete with the likes of other full-size SUVs like the premium GMC Yukon, the affordable Chevrolet Tahoe, the all-new Jeep Wagoneer, and the recently updated Nissan Armada.

2022 Ford Expedition for sale

With this year's update, the refreshed Ford Expedition sees a price hike of $2,780 and is now available for sale at an MSRP of $55,070. The 2022 Expedition lease deals start at $795/month for a 36-month duration and 12,000 miles of annual mileage limit. It also requires a $5,517 down payment and a $645 acquisition fee. The Expedition finance offers begin at $913/month at 3.9% APR for 60 months along with the same $5,517 down payment.

Buying Advice

At the entry-level XL trim, the 2022 Ford Expedition is rather capable and feature-packed, offering great value for money as well. While this does not hold true for higher trims as they are also equipped with great features that you might regret missing out on. Thus, for the best of both worlds, we recommend the King Ranch trim, although a specced out Platinum can’t hurt if you’re paying $77,000 for a Ford SUV.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

As an SUV, the Expedition is a fantastic all-rounder, offering comfort, practicality, rugged looks, and a potent powertrain - CarBuzz

The 2022 Ford Expedition gets a refresh this year similar to the Ford F-150 update in the recent past. The Expedition interior gets improved materials now which uplifts the ambiance inside the cabin. Price now start at a price of $55,070 including the lofty $1,795 destination fee. It is now available for sale in 5 trim configuration after the inclusion of the new Timberline trim. Ford packs each trim with plenty of tech and creature comforts and therefore there is one Expediton for every budget of the buyers.

The 2022 Expedition scores decently in terms of its reliability ratings, getting a 78/100 rating in the tests conducted by J.D. Power. This puts it behind the GM SUVs and the Toyota Sequoia but leads the Jeep and Nissan SUVs. Expect to spend roughly about $70,604 for the Expedition 5-year cost of ownership, which again positions in the middle of the pack. Ford also offers just a basic 3-year warranty program with no complimentary maintenance packages available.

Buying Advice

Priced at an expected $62,080, the 2022 Ford Expedition XLT model is the one to get with the 4WD drivetrain. We would recommend getting the optional comfort features and convenience features like heated and ventilated seats, captain's chairs for the second-row seats instead of the split-bench seat, and lastly, the heavy-duty tow package which will increase the towing capacity to 9,200 pounds with the 4WD system.

Features
8.5/10

Now with 6 trims on offer, the 2022 Ford Expedition price range lies between $55,070 and $83,350. Since Ford offers its Ford CoPilot 360 as standard, the 2022 Expedition gets features like automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic, lane-keep assist, and auto high-beams as standard. The base Expedition XL model offers only 5 seats and one has to upgrade to the XLT trim for the three-row seat configuration. All trims apart from the Timberline and Platinum models feature the same 3.5L 375 hp turbocharged V6 engine as standard.

The new Timberline trim joins the XL, XLT, Limited, King Range, and Platinum lineup and slots between the XLT and Limited trim, just like on the Ford Explorer. The Timberline trim is a more off-road focused trim and comes with its own unique rugged exterior and interior styling and the off-road focused 33-inch all-terrain tires. Most of the necessary creature comforts are available from the Limited trim onwards but the best and the most premium features are offered only in the top-end Platinum trim which also makes the Expedition considerably expensive.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

As Ford reports no changes in the powertrain section of the 2022 Ford Expedition, the full-size SUV is also expected to offer the same fuel economy figures as the 2021 model year. When equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine, the 2022 Expedition delivers 17 MPG in the city, 23 MPG on the highway, and a combined 19 MPG. The 4WD version drops the fuel economy figures by 2 MPG on the highway. There are no changes in fuel economy for the Platinum trim which makes 400 hp.

The Ford Expedition comes equipped with a 25-gallon fuel tank which allows a range of 475 miles combined. This is more than the Yukon and Tahoe which offer a smaller 24-gallon fuel tank and more than the Nissan Armada which has a larger 26-gallon fuel tank but has the lowest fuel economy figures resulting in a low combined range of 416 miles.

Interior
7.1/10

The Expedition makes full use of its interior space - Edmunds

The 2022 Ford Expedition interior gets a refreshed dashboard design this year which includes a new 15.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen previously seen in the Ford Mustang Mach-E. With this update, Ford has also added a few new features to the 2022 Expedition. The Ford Expedition interior comes with a seating capacity of up to 8, depending on the trim as the base model gets seating for just 5 occupants. Features like heated power-adjustable seats, tri-zone climate control, and leather upholstery with unique stitching are available as you go higher up in the trims. The base is also well equipped with power-adjustable front row seats, cloth upholstery, and tri-zone climate control.

With all three rows, the 2022 Expedition has a standard cargo capacity of 20.9 cu-ft which can be expanded to 104.5 cu-ft. The interior of the Ford Expedition comes with the most amount of space for the occupants across all three rows, specifically the second and third-row where it offers more space. In terms of infotainment, the larger 15.5-inch infotainment system is available from King Ranch trim onwards, while the lower models feature an updated 12-inch infotainment screen. The Sync 4 interface has the ability of OTA updates not only for the system but also for navigation. A rear-seat entertainment system which is available on Limited trim and higher is also carried forward.

The Yukon and Tahoe are wider than the Expedition and hence offer better shoulder room and cargo space with all seats in use. That said, the 2022 Expedition interior third-row seats offer the most legroom, making it the most usable in this regard. The Nissan Armada is the most cramped here and also offers the least impressive cabin design. While the GM SUVs offer a rather premium experience inside its cabin, the Ford Expedition offers the best experience with plenty of creature comforts on offer.

  • Power ventilated/massaging front seats & heated rear seats
  • Power-folding second & third-row seats w/leather interior upholstery

Exterior
7.1/10

The Expedition is quite slab-sided, with only one styling line running down the side connecting the front are rear lights. - CarBuzz

The 2022 Ford Expedition exterior styling features quite a few changes as earlier spy shots have revealed the testing car had a heavily camouflaged front and rear fascia. Then there is also the case of the new Expedition Timberline Edition which sports off-road wheels, heavy F-150 Raptor underbody skid plates, and also a higher ground clearance, for proper off-roading capability. The standard ground clearance of 9.8-inch is more than enough to tackle most of the terrains you wish to take on.

With the Timberland trim, we do expect its own unique exterior to feature a more rugged design and its own unique exterior paint. The 2022 Expedition dimensions remain the same as before and there are different 18-inch, 20-inch, & 22-inch alloy wheels on offer to cater to the different tastes of the buyers. Also, the standard set of paint color options continues including the popular Antimatter Blue, Rapid Red Mettalic tri-coat, and Iconic Silver with up to 11 color choices now available.

Compared to the competition, the dimensions are similar except for the Yukon and the Tahoe which are 81-inches in width and ride about 2-inches lower than the Ford Expedition. The Nissan Armada is marginally smaller and yet weighs the most in this comparison. It rides higher than the Chevy and GMC SUVs but the American twins offer better interior space. On the streets, it is the Yukon and the 2022 Expedition that will announce your arrival the loudest.

Some exterior features of the 2022 Ford Expedition are :

  • Power running Boards
  • Auto high beam headlamps
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Chrome Tip Dual Exhaust
  • 22-inch Aluminum Alloy Wheels
  • LED headlights and taillights
  • Hands-free Foot Activated Liftgate
  • Rain Sensing Wipers and Rear Defogger

Safety
9.5/10

The 2022 Ford Expedition safety ratings are undoubtedly the best in the business. The 2022 Expedition scores a perfect 5-star rating in the tests conducted by the NHTSA while the IIHS has awarded it with the "Top Safety Pick+" accolade for being the best in the segment. Ford also equips its flagship SUV with many safety tech like ESC & roll stability control, dual-stage airbags for all three rows, tire-pressure monitor, Mykey system, and much more. For 2022 though, the latest Expedition has the best-in-class driver-assist tech, which now also includes the new Ford BlueCruise hands-free driving system.

Some noteworthy safety features that come with the 2022 Ford Expedition includes:

  • Front Collision Mitigation
  • Lane Departure Warning & Lane-Keep Assist
  • Blind-Spot Monitor w/Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Driver Monitoring Alert
  • Active Park Assist
  • Surround-view camera system w/Aerial view
  • Front & rear parking sensors

Competition
8.5/10

2022 Ford Expedition vs 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevy Tahoe offers great value to its buyers with its low asking price and impressive standard towing capacity. While the Expedition offers superior acceleration performance & fuel economy figures, the Chevy offers better cargo space. That said, the Expedition offers a premium interior with better passenger legroom on offer for all three rows. The splendid safety ratings, solid reliability, and great resale value make us tilt towards the Ford Expedition.

2022 Ford Expedition vs 2022 GMC Yukon

The GMC Yukon lineup comes with lesser power and offers a lower performance quotient than the Ford Expedition. It also has lesser fuel economy and range than the Expedition. It comes with lesser interior space than the Expedition but offers more cargo space than it. That said it is priced slightly lesser than the expected price of the 2022 Expedition, making it a good option.

2022 Ford Expedition vs 2021 Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada does make more power and has better performance than the Ford Expedition. However, the Armada losses out in terms of interior space, cargo space, fuel economy, and driving range compared to the Expedition. Moreover, the Nissan Armada is more affordable than the Ford Expedition, making it a good option, only if you seek better performance.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Ford Expedition does come with impressive power figures and it certainly does put forth a good performance quotient, it even offers the best fuel economy among the competition. With the 2022 model year, Ford is expected to raise the bar with new exterior and interior styling with some additional features and possibly a hybrid powertrain. All these make the already good Ford Expedition a great choice in the segment.
