Overview

Ford has invested about $11.5 billion into electric powertrain R&D which has seen a significant uprise in the past few years. Ford Transit comes as the second installment in this lineup after the Mach-E and it will be out on the road before the launch of the beloved Ford F-150, which is also all set to be electrified and would be available in late 2021.

Buying Advice

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Ford E-Transit will have a major impact on the commercial business as it will reduce transportation costs significantly. The Transit has remained to be a best selling commercial van globally and has a recorded 10 million sales across the globe, electrification of this best-seller would further not only increase the sales but would also allow for people to access emissions-free zones.

This will further help in the transportation of goods and services. Currently, there is not much competition which the E-Transit should be scared of but leading automakers such as the GM group and Mercedes-Benz are working on their own electrical vans which will arrive soon.

Features

The E-Transit stands is the second vehicle in Ford’s electrical vehicles lineup. It is a commercial cargo-hauling van, and the passenger-carrying version is expected to follow soon. Registrations for the van have already started and it is expected to arrive in dealerships in late 2021 and will be a 2022 model. It comes with a base price tag of $43,295 for the cargo version and the passenger version would be priced somewhere around the $50,000 mark.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

EPA has not yet shared the details on the range of the E-Transit. Ford, however, claims that it will deliver up to 126 miles of range on a single charge and this could change according to the driving conditions. It comes with both AC and DC charging capabilities.

The DC charger is a 115-plus-kW fast charger that can add up to 30 miles of range in 10 minutes of charging and 45 miles of range in 15 minutes of charging. Just like other EV’s the charging rate will begin to slow down once the battery starts to reach a full charge.

The standard Ford mobile charger is a 240-volt AC charger which would provide a range of 10 miles in an hour of charge, and the Ford Connect Charge station would bring the rate up to 15 miles of range in an hour of charge which means it would take approximately 8 hours to fully charge the Transit with the regular charger.

The overall range of E-Transit seems less when compared to the other rivals, but then these are the gas-powered engines, once the electrical variants come out a suitable comparison would be possible which would further allow providing a better understanding of which vans fares well in terms of the overall range.

Interior
7.9/10

The traditional Transit design which can be seen on the exterior is carried inside as well.

The first thing that you would notice while stepping in the E-Transit is that a rotating knob is present in the place where usually the standard gear lever used to be. This knob can be seen on many other Ford passenger vehicles. E-Transit will currently be available in the cargo variant only which has a utilitarian interior that comprises materials like cloth upholstery, rubberized flooring, plastic trim that can be seen inside the cabin.

It will be available in the standard roof, and high-roof version with a standard and an extended wheelbase body style. The cargo space remains similar to that of the gas-powered alternative with the base version offering 246.7 cubic feet of space behind the first row and the top version with the high roof and extended wheelbase offering up to 487 cubic feet of space.

The E-Transit is expected to offer more than enough space in the standard variant, it is less than what is offered in the Sprinter which has the biggest cargo space with 319 cubic feet and no changes are expected to come in the electrical versions as even the Transit shares most of its dimension with the gasoline version so they might remain same in the other vehicles eclectic versions too.

Interior features of the 2022 Ford E-Transit

  • Redesigned center console
  • Rotary shift-knob and e-brake
  • Option to delete rear overhead shelf for increased headroom
  • Ford Pro Power Onboard - 2.4kW outlet for charging or connecting power tools

2022 Ford E-Transit: Infotainment and Connectivity

Ford has decided to make the E-Transit more technologically advanced than the gas-powered twin. It comes with a massive 12.0-inch touchscreen display that belittles the 4.0-inch screen in the regular Transit screen and is still bigger and more refined than the optional 8.0-inch screen available in the regular version.

It is more refined than the previous versions and also more user-friendly as it comes with Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment suite and also becomes the first Ford commercial vehicle to come with this system. Other notable features of the infotainment system are listed below:

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 4G LTE Wi-fi hotspot
  • Ford Telematics
  • Ford Data Services
  • 12” touchscreen

Exterior
7.9/10

The E-Transit looks identical to the gasoline-powered version. It comes with some blue streaks and hints around the exterior, like the front grille for example comes with 3 blue horizontal bars that work as the distinct feature to differentiate between the standard Transit and the E-Transit.

The front grille also holds the charging port which is placed just below the Ford emblem. It seems like Ford kept this traditional design of the Transit for the electrical version so it does not upset the customers who are already happy with the current looks of the van but would love to opt for an environmentally friendly electrical version.

*speculated specs

The 2021 Ford E-Transit has the shortest wheelbase in the segment and still manages that space quite well by having better space inside than the Nissan and Chevrolet. It is also the smallest vans in the segment which would allow for better maneuverability in tight city streets.

Exterior highlights of the 2022 E-Transit:

  • Three roof heights to choose from
  • Three body length options
  • Chassis cab and cutaway models available

Final Verdict

It will be a while when the E-Transit starts to appear on the road, but once it starts to roll out of the dealership it will surely revolutionize the working of commercial vans. It has no competitors as of now but would be soon joined by Rivian’s Amazon Prime van and Bollinger Deliver E-van, and the Mercedes-Benz E-Sprinter which will follow the 2022 Ford E-Transit soon.

Till then it will stand as a lone king in the commercial business as the only electric delivery van that is an already best-selling van across the globe with the gas engine, and soon might also rule the commercial EV segment as well.
