Overview

Reportedly due for a facelift next year, the 2021 Ford Expedition gets only minor updates this year. While Ford has introduced a new two-row XL STX base model at a lower price tag, all trims also get revised wheels with the new styling. The Ford CoPilot 360 has also been made standard from the Expedition XLT trim onwards. That said, the upcoming 2022 Expedition is expected to features the latest 15.5-inch infotainment system currently seen in the Mustang Mach-E.

2021 Ford Expedition Buying Advice

With the Ford Expedition expected to get an update next year, most buyers might want to wait out this period and get the revised model. That said, with the inclusion of a new base XL STX model, there is a price drop this year in its starting price. Budget buyers can also look for a used Ford Expedition as the 2018 Expedition are now available at a discounted price in the used car market.

The 2021 Expedition gets a powerful twin-turbo V6 which offers a strong acceleration performance. Having room for up to 8 passengers coupled with excellent cargo space and stout towing capacity, it gets a long wheelbase as well as standard length. Rivals like the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Nissan Armada offer value for money for buyers. Therefore, does the Ford Expedition hold its ground in the full-size SUV segment? Let's find out!

2021 Ford Expedition for sale

The Ford Expedition starts at an MSRP of $52,290 including the destination fee. The 2021 Expedition finance offers start at a monthly premium of $913 at 3.9% APR for a 60-month period and requires a $5,229 down payment. The Expedition 2021 lease deals begin at $794/month for a tenure of 36 months and require the same $5,229 down payment along with a $645 acquisition fee.

Buying Advice

The mid-spec Limited will offer you great value for money because it comes with lots of luxuries like a heated steering wheel, perforated front leather with heated and ventilated captain’s chairs, tri-zone climate control, Bang & Olufsen sound system, 20-inch alloy wheels, and wireless charging. But you might miss the 360-degree camera and the LED headlamps. Additionally, the Expedition includes 22-inch alloy wheels and enhanced active park assist.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

While the 2021 Ford Expedition price is on the higher side, it is a rather pleasant experience owning it. J.D. Power rates the Ford Expedition with a reliability rating of 78/100, which is on par with the Toyota Sequoia and behind the Chevy and GMC SUVs. The Expedition 5-year cost of ownership can be expected to be around $70,604 while Ford offers a basic 3-year warranty with no complimentary maintenance package.

Considering the immense space it has inside, the 2021 Expedition is comfy and relaxing but does not expect much luxury inside. The high Expedition price on the higher models puts it on par with the Lincoln Navigator. But other than that, the car is certainly an all-rounder offering muscular looks, a rugged structure, perfect practicality, comfort, and a powerful powertrain.

Buying Advice

The mid-spec 2021 Ford Expedition Limited will offer you great value for money because it comes with lots of luxuries like a heated steering wheel, perforated front leather with heated and ventilated captain’s chairs, three-zone climate control, Bang & Olufsen sound system, 20-inch alloy wheels, and wireless charging. But you might miss the 360-degree camera and the LED headlamps. Additionally, the Expedition includes 22-inch alloy wheels and enhanced active park assist.

Features
8.0/10

The 2021 Ford Expedition price range lies between $52,290 for the base trim and costs about $78,908 for the Expedition Platinum 4x4 model. The Expedition is available for sale in the same 5 trim levels that are XL, XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum. The Ford Expedition comes powered with a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine but the four-wheel-drive setup comes as optional only for another $3,050. Ford now also offers a 5-seat two-row XL STX model at a lower price tag of $51,690 while the Ford CoPilot 360 suite of driver aids is offered as standard from XLT trim onwards.

The 2021 Expedition feature list comes with similar and more standard equipment than the entry-level trim such as an eight-inch touchscreen display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, three-zone climate control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The XLT trim adds only minor features to the base XL trim but the Expedition Limited model comes packed with creature comforts. The King Ranch gets you specialized badging and emblems along with many premium creature comforts. The Platinum trim gets you a more powerful engine tune along with a handful of premium luxury cabin features.

Optionally, Ford offers the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package with an upgraded radiator, 3.73 rear-axle gearing, trailer backup assist, and trailer brake controller for $795. There's also an FX4 Off-Road package on offer for $1,650 that features all-terrain tires, off-road-tuned suspensions, electronic limited-slip differential, skid plates, fuel tank protection, and an upgraded radiator. Adding the surround-view camera system to the FX4 Off-road package takes its cost to $2,035. There's also a Black Accent package offered with the Ford Expedition that will set you back by $1,895.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

The 2021 Ford Expedition EPA figures tell that the rear-wheel drivetrain can deliver an estimate of 17/23/19 MPG in the city/highway/combined conditions respectively. Add up the 4WD and even then, consumption won’t be impacted much. That said, the real-world fuel efficiency is much lower and the fuel tank capacity of 23.3 gallons would therefore need frequent refueling. The rated driving range is around 443 miles combined but expect under 400 miles in real-world conditions.

When compared to Chevy’s Tahoe’s EPA-estimated 4WD offering of 16/ 23/ 19 mpg, the Expedition is far ahead. In fact, one can clearly see that the V6 has made the Expedition much more fuel-efficient than its V8-powered counterparts and that is why it manages to have a better overall range despite having a smaller fuel tank.

Interior
9.0/10

The 2021 Ford Expedition interior is much roomier when compared to its rivals and offers you and your folks great comfort. What’s impressive is the third row, which gives you all the accessibility that you need plus lets adults enter and exit smoothly. The center console comes mounted with a lot of buttons but is user-friendly. The huge A-pillars at the front hamper the visibility of the road for the driver. However, a nice backup camera and a 360-degree camera system help you view everything that’s behind you almost a mile with ease. With lumbar support and an additional massage functionality in the higher trims, the front seats are like heaven after a hard day’s work.

The second row of the 2021 Expedition is pretty decent too while the third row easily allows the adults to sit which is one of its biggest strengths. The third row is a power-folding one as a standard in all the trims. So, that gives you some extra space. The entire lineup offers you an 8-inch infotainment system packed with Ford’s Sync 3 operating system. It’s not quite the latest but definitely makes the Expedition a wonder. In the Limited trim, these options are standard, adding to which you get the premium Bang & Olufsen sound system with 12 speakers. Dish out $1995 and you get the dual-headrest second-row entertainment system as well.

The 20.9 cu-ft trunk capacity can be expanded to a maximum of 104.5 cu-ft by folding down the rear two rows. Amongst the competition, the Expedition offers perfect storage space and comfort to the passengers. The Nissan Armada struggles the most in terms of third-row and cargo space, while the Tahoe and Yukon fare better in the cargo capacity section. While the Yukon offers some premium interior features, none match up to the luxuries offered on the top-end Ford Expedition models. Standout interior features of the Ford Expedition:

  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Power-adjustable driver's seat
  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • Ford Sync 3 Connect infotainment system
  • Navigation & Wireless Charging pad
  • SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link
  • HD Radio and Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Bang & Olufsen audio with 10 Speakers

Exterior
7.0/10

An SUV like the 2022 Ford Expedition doesn’t have much scope for a lot of facelifts in terms of its exteriors. The only changes you can witness are in terms of the fenders, taillights, headlights, and grille. If these are changed a bit, the SUV will start to look different. When it comes to the Expedition, the styling is done majorly on the rear lights. Generic tail lights have been adorned with a chrome strip with the Expedition’s nameplate sitting between them.

Changes to design are majorly seen in the alloy wheels and Ford continues to offer up to 9 paint color options depending on the trim you choose. In all of the 2021 Expedition models, the halogen headlights are standard while higher trims feature LED all-round lights. In King Ranch and Platinum, it’s the LEDs that are standard. The wheels range from 18 inches to 22 inches. And with the XLT trim level, a panoramic moonroof is an available option. But with the King Ranch and Platinum models, the panoramic roof, as well as the black roof-rack side rails are standard.

The Ford Expedition, when compared to its rivals, is the longest and offers the best ground clearance at 9.8 inches with the Armada coming in at the second spot. The GMC and Chevy SUVs ride much lower and are similar in dimensions and curb weight as that of the Expedition. The 2021 Ford Expedition is much larger than its rivals and in a category where buyers are obsessed with space, that is a strong point. Standout exterior features include:

  • 18-inch wheels
  • Foglights
  • Hands-free liftgate
  • Power-deployable running boards
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers

Safety
8.0/10

The 2022 Ford Expedition safety rating of 5-stars is among the best by the NHTSA. Everything including the rollover tests resulted in great scores. The IIHS, however, hasn't tested the Ford Expedition yet, but expect it to get high scores whenever it goes under the tests. When it comes to safety, almost all trims of the Expedition come equipped with Co-Pilot360 as standard. All the basic features like tire pressure monitoring, parking sensors, dual-stage airbags, stability control & roll stability control, are all available. Standout safety features include:

  • Adaptive cruise control & Parking Assist automated parking
  • Front collision warning and Automatic emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitor w/rear cross-traffic
  • Lane-departure warning & lane-keep assist
  • Surround-view camera system w/aerial view
  • Front and rear parking sensors

Competition
8.5/10

2021 Ford Expedition vs 2021 GMC Yukon

The GMC Yukon comes with two different body styles in trims that are called Yukon and Yukon XL, which is similar to how Expedition and Expedition Max is. But in terms of cargo space, passenger space, towing capacity, engine performance, and ride quality, the Yukon doesn’t perform as well as the Expedition. The Yukon also has some cheap materials incorporated in the interiors when compared to the Ford Expedition.

2021 Ford Expedition vs 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe

If you want to check a perfect rivalry, here you go. Ford is better in terms of performance, fuel economy, and towing capacity. But in terms of cargo space, the Chevrolet Tahoe can have the seats folded which would increase the space inside. It offers you a better trunk space along with the seats intact. If you get some expensive models of the Expedition, the interior quality is great. And in terms of safety, Ford bags it all. Tahoe lacks somewhere here. So, all in all, Ford Expedition is definitely in the lead.

2021 Ford Expedition vs 2021 Nissan Armada

Compared to the Expedition, the Nissan Armada offers better-towing capacity and an upscale cabin. But the fuel economy is not very good. The Armada, with its great powertrain, offers you value for money coming at a slightly cheaper price than the Ford. With the Expedition, the interiors are good but not as luxurious. That said, the modern technology and plenty of creature comforts make the Expedition the preffered choice here.

Final Verdict

Yes, you can get this car if you want a complete package. The Ford Expedition offers you balanced handling, a mighty powertrain, impressive towing capacity, and best-in-class gas mileage. And you can tuck your passengers in the third row with ease for a long and loving ride; thanks to the spacious three-row seating. The Expedition’s intuitive Sync 3 infotainment system makes your journeys interesting as well.
