Overview

Only into the second year, the fifth-generation 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe hits the hallmark of a full-size SUV. This Chevy's large SUV is a best-seller in the US, thanks to its roomy cabin, high towing capacity, and loaded features. Chevy has tweaked Tahoe's trim lineup and feature list this year. The 2022 Chevy Tahoe is back for sale with some changes to the trim lineup. The major changes include the availability of the 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 on the RST, Z71, and Premier trim levels. Also, the off-road-oriented Z71 adds an electronic limited-slip differential, too. The MSRP for a rear-drive 2022 Tahoe starts at $49,700 for base LS trim and goes up to the High Country trim, whose rear-drive version costs $70,000. The base 355-hp 5.3L V8 delivers decent performance but the optional 420-hp 6.2L V8 is the go-to option for brisk acceleration as it can do the 0-60 MPH test in 5.9 seconds.

2022 Chevy Tahoe front angle view

Unlike its rivals, the Tahoe is also offered a diesel engine that is known for its excellent fuel efficiency. Its cabin is the roomiest in this segment with a mind-blowing cargo capacity. It packs all the latest features, be it technology or comfort, and for 2022, Tahoe features new technological features and exterior color options. The Tahoe also adds a few more safety features as standard this year, which is a great move. The Tahoe is in direct competition with the likes of the Ford Expedition, the Nissan Armada, and the Toyota Sequoia.

Buying Advice

We recommend going for the LT trim as it not only can be had under $60,000 but also gets nifty standard features over the base trim. These features include wireless charging, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a limited-slip rear differential, a hands-free power liftgate, a 9-speaker Bose sound system, heated front seats, and 10-way power leather seats. Don't forget to buy the Driver Alert package before checkout. This package adds lane departure warning, lane change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Chevy Tahoe gets larger, roomier, comfier, and loaded with more features than a cineplex- The Car Connection

The Chevy Tahoe has always been a good family SUV with an excellent cabin and space even in the third row and good tow ratings. Last year's full revamp is followed by minor updates this year, which have helped the Tahoe earn back its crown, and is one of the best full-size SUVs on the market right now. All its engines are brawny in character and have excellent workhorse personalities. The biggest selling point of the Tahoe has always been its affordability, not only in terms of initial cost but also in terms of running costs.

The true cost to own the Tahoe is estimated to be approximately $10,200 every year. This amount includes its repair, fuel, maintenance, etc. It may sound more to you but the Sequoia and Armada's ownership costs are more than 11 grand annually. Moreover, the Tahoe tops the charts in terms of reliability in its segment with a score of 83. All these points suggest that the Tahoe is the best choice for those wanting to haul their families with a pinch of style and practicality.

Fuel Economy
6.8/10

The most fuel-efficient Tahoe features the available diesel engine- CarAndDriver

The fuel economy of the Chevy Tahoe is pretty decent for an SUV that houses a V8. The EPA-estimated ratings are 15 MPG in the city, 20 MPG on a highway, and 17 MPG combined. Even the 4WD models have the same ratings, which is great. The models with the powerful 6.2L engine drop the economy by just 1 MPG, which is good news for fuel savers.

Those worried about fuel economy can choose the diesel engine as it returns 21 MPG in the city, 28 MP on a highway, and 24 MPG combined. The massive 24-gallon fuel tank gives it a combined range of 400 plus miles for RWD models and 384 miles for 4WD versions. Diesel models get a large 28-gallon tank due to which it delivers a whopping 672 miles.

As for the rivals, the Ford Expedition is the most efficient SUV thanks to its more modern powertrain. The aging powertrain of the Nissan Armada reflects its fuel economy but the Toyota Sequoia does even worse and is the least fuel-efficient SUV in this segment. Altogether, the Tahoe doe snot disappointment in terms of fuel economy.

Interior
9.0/10

The Tahoe High Country’s interior sets a new standard for Chevy trucks- Autoblog

Inside, the Chevy Tahoe's build quality has significantly improved with soft-touch materials used liberally inside the cabin. Still, hard plastics are found if you observe carefully. The Tahoe can lug around 8 people however, the base LS model can be equipped with a 40/20/40 split-bench seat at the front, increasing passenger capacity up to 9. Cloth and leather upholsteries are available depending on the trim. Surprisingly, the center console is devoid of any switchgear and gets a wireless charging pad with two integrated cup holders.

The front seats are extremely comfortable with creature comforts like power-adjustability with heated and ventilated functionality. Critics complained that the rear seats are a bit firmer compared to the front ones. The second row also offers sliding adjustment, further improving practicality. Getting into the third tow is made easy thanks to the grab handles. Space is never less in the Tahoe. Even the tallest of passengers can climb aboard the Tahoe and find their comfort easily. The optional panoramic sunroof does not affect the headroom.

Every Tahoe gets a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system that features wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, Alexa built-in with voice recognition, etc. This year, all trims except the LS trim get access to a 12.3-inch configurable digital driver's display. Also, the infotainment system has been enhanced on the LT trim and upwards with Google's voice assistant and maps. The screen is responsive and the graphics are crisp. All the controls are easy to access and ergonomically placed. A 9 or 10-speaker Bose sound system is standard on higher trims.

The Chevy Tahoe doesn’t try to disguise its size- Kelly Blue Book

Last year, the Chevy Tahoe received a significant redesign and that continues for this year as well. The boxy front-end is inspired by the Silverado pickup truck. All models get LED headlights with unique DRLs and a bold front grille with a bow-tie badge in the middle. The off-road-focused Z71 model gets a unique front end with a different grille and bumper design while the sporty RST model gets a gloss black grille and badges.

The wheel options for the Tahoe include 18, 20, and 22-inch alloys. Compared to its rivals, the Tahoe sits 8 inches above the ground but due to its lengthy proportions, maneuverability isn't its forte. The Tahoe sports a short wheelbase for a quicker burnout during acceleration. The boxy design extends to the rear with a strong shoulder line extending from the headlights to the rear. Higher trims also get quad exit exhausts with chrome tips

The Toyota Sequoia's short overall length can be an advantage for its easy maneuverability. The Ford Expedition has a better ground clearance than the Tahoe, meaning it is ready to take on any rough terrain. Although the Nissan Armada's height is equal to the Tahoe, it lacks enough headroom in the third row. Some notable exterior features include:

  • LED auto high-beam headlights
  • LED DRLs
  • Puddle lamps
  • LED taillights
  • Power-folding, heated exterior mirrors
  • 18, 20 & 22-inch alloy wheels

Safety

The Chevy offers several high-tech towing assists in addition to its loaded roster of standard driver-assistance technology- CarAndDriver

The latest generation of Chevrolet Tahoe hasn’t been crash-tested by IIHS yet but NHTSA gave it four out of five stars for its performance in all crash tests. Individually, it received five stars for the side-impact crash test, four stars for the frontal crash test, and only three stars for the rollover test. Therefore, we can expect good ratings from IIHS as well.

For 2022. few driver assistance technologies have been made standard. The remaining driver aids can be accessible through optional packages such as the Driver Alert package. The higher trims add the contents of this package as standard. The SUV is also complemented by a suite of seven airbags for additional safety. Some main safety features are:

  • Front & reverse automatic emergency braking
  • Following distance indicator
  • Forward collision warning
  • Rearview camera
  • Teen driver technology
  • Buckle To Drive
  • Surround-view camera
  • Front & rear parking sensors
  • Teen Driver
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Lane change alert
  • Head-up display

2022 Chevrolet Tahoe vs 2022 Ford Expedition

Both the Tahoe and Ford Expedition received a whole lot of updates recently, and for 2022, the Expedition gets even more interior updates including a brand new infotainment system and more. The Expedition is limited to just one engine option while the Tahoe gets several including an efficient turbo diesel engine. Overall, the Expedition still makes a compelling choice especially with the new updates, better mileage, and class-leading towing capacity than the Tahoe.

2022 Chevrolet Tahoe vs 2022 Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia may not be a big and bulky SUV compared to the Tahoe but it gets its basics spot on and a powerful engine under its hood. It also boasts excellent off-road abilities. What lets it down is its poor fuel economy, bad towing capacity, and below-average interior space. Now anyone looking to buy a big SUV has these three things on its top priority. Thus, the Sequoia is at a disadvantage against the Tahoe in this comparison.

022 Chevrolet Tahoe vs 2022 Nissan Armada

Like the Tahoe, the Nissan Armada still uses the old V8 engine but is more powerful than the Tahoe with better towing capacity. It also gets a more luxurious and feature-rich interior but its cargo volume is poor. Options are limited for the Armada, but it still makes sense, especially in the base trim. The Tahoe, on the other hand, offers a lot more flexibility and includes a diesel engine option with good fuel efficiency. Overall, the Tahoe is the better SUV if intended purely for family use.

Final Verdict

Because of the recent update, the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe continues to be one of the best full-size SUVs on the market with a roomy cabin and comfortable seating in all three rows. Recent additions like the efficient turbo diesel engine have made it even more popular than before. For customers looking for a spacious and comfortable SUV with decent performance and towing capacity all at a bargain price tag, the Tahoe is an ideal choice.
