Overview

The Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray is a 2 seater sports car from the American automaker to go up against some strong German competition. The paramount thing about the new Corvette Stingray is, it comes with a mid-engine V8 layout which offers a low center of gravity and better weight distribution than the front-engined C7. It also comes at half the price of other cars in the competition and is expected to start at $61,000 for the 2022 model year. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that it looks better than the C7. Moreover, it gets new color options and carbon fiber trim pieces for 2022. Additionally, it offers a Race-inspired C8.R Edition which offers distinctive colors and graphic designs. Apart from that, it mostly remains unchanged.

Buying Advice

The 2LT trim seems to make more sense out of all three trims. For a price of $67,500 just under $70,000, the 2LT trim offers a lot of value for the money and is certainly equipped heavily for the price. Unless you want extra comfort, the 2LT trim will be more than adequate for most people. Moreover, the Chevrolet also offers plenty of optional packages and features to spruce up your Corvette the way you want. Some of the optional features you get in the depending on the trim are Adaptive suspension dampers, Competition Sport seats with additional bolstering, Front-end lift system which helps reducing scraping on driveways and speed bumps, Transparent or carbon-fiber roof for the coupe, and Various paint stripe schemes and carbon-fiber trim.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The massive and monstrous V8 engine delivers impressive performance and instantaneous acceleration. The formula behind the Corvette is the massive engine, big power, sporty suspension, and a rear-wheel-drive that loves to burn a lot of rubber and the new Corvette checks all the boxes mentioned above perfectly. Hence we strongly believe that it is a proper sports car in its class. When it comes to the interior, Chevrolet has managed to bring out a new interior setup that is more driver-focussed now. In a nutshell, flamboyance is the right word to define the aesthetics of the interior. Moreover, it goes up against cars like the Porsche 911 Carrera S coupe, Audi R8, and Jaguar F-Type R.

Features

The 2022 Chevrolet Corvette is expected to be offered in 3 different exciting trim levels namely 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT ranging from $61,000 for the base 1LT trim to $72,300 for the top 3LT trim which is quite a bargain for a sports car. Moreover, As standard, the 1LT trim offers features like a 12-inch digital instrumentation display, Rear parking sensors, Leather seats, Wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto smartphone integration.

The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and so on. The 2LT comes with all the standard features you get from 1LT and adds features like Heated and ventilated seats, Head-Up Display, Heated steering wheel, Navigation system, 14-speaker Bose audio system, wireless smartphone charging, Head-Up Display, etc. Moving on to the 3LT, it offers all the creature comforts and attention to detail you would want from a high-performance sports car and it turns out to be a great package overall.

It offers all the features you would have in the 2LT trim and adds some superior features like GT2 sport seats, Leather-wrapped interior panels, Premium leather upholstery, and some more features that will be listed in the table below. Apart from all this, you have access to some stellar packages. For instance, it offers a package named Z51 Performance package which provides a performance exhaust system that offers a slight tweak in the power and it puts out 495 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque with the Z51 performance package on board.

2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Release date:

The Chevrolet is most likely to start production by early September 2022 and might hit the showrooms by the end of this year.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The engines of the sports cars in this segment aren’t really known for an impressive fuel economy, instead, they are made to catapult you to the horizon at brain-melting speeds. The 2022 Chevrolet Corvette is speculated to return 15 mpg in the city. The highway fuel economy, on the other hand, is on par with some of its rivals returning 27 MPG and a combined 19 mpg, a 18.5-gallon fuel tank doesn’t really help much with its driving range and offers a range of just 277.5 miles in the city and 499.5 miles on the highway and a combined 351.5 miles which still beats some of its competition in terms of the overall range. The fuel economy figures might further drop by 1 or 2 mpg if you opt for the performance exhaust that comes with the Z51 package.

In comparison, the Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe is the most efficient sports car in its class with a fuel efficiency of 15 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and a combined 20 mpg followed by the Corvette Stingray at a combined 19 MPG. Both the Audi R8 Coupe and Jaguar F-Type R are less efficient. However, the car with the least fuel economy is the Audi R8 which returns 14 mpg in the city, 23 mpg while cruising down the highway and a combined 17 MPG due to the highly powerful engine it comes with. Moreover, the Porsche, with its small 16.9-gallon tank, loses out to some of its rivals in terms of highway and combined range. It allows the car to traverse a distance of 304 miles in the city, 389 miles on the highway, and a combined 338 miles.

Interior
8.5/10

Chevrolet has gone crazy with the interior. It is a notch better than the interior of the C7 Corvette in every way. To start with, it gets an exquisite and striking interior design with a stylish-looking dashboard with AC vents merged into the dashboard. It looks more like a cockpit than a cabin. Moreover, the center touchscreen on the dashboard is faced towards the driver which shows that it’s a driver-oriented cabin. Moreover, the gear shift knob looks like something from the future. There are an array of climate and Air conditioning control buttons that have been curated and laid out on the center console unlike the ones in the other cars. Moreover, you get a stylish touchpad that controls the screen. Moreover, the 2 spoke steering wheel looks striking and sporty.

The Fit and Finish are absolutely superior and the curation of materials is astonishing because everything inside the interior looks so premium. Moreover, it also offers a wireless charging pad and leather bolstered upholstery even in the base LT1 trim. The 3LT trim, however, gets a GT2 sports seat that looks and gives you the feeling of a race car with premium leather upholstery. Coming to the interior dimensions and ergonomics, it provides seating for 2 people with driver-focused ergonomics to make you feel like driving a race car behind the wheel. However, it is not as comfortable as some other cars in the segment which offer more generous cabins. On the flip side, it comes with the largest cargo space of 13 cubic feet.

In comparison, the Audi R8 Coupe has already excelled in the interior space and the competition isn’t even near. However, it has room for only 2 people. On the other hand, the Porsche comes with seating for 4 people. Sadly, the official figures are unknown as always. Trunk space is also respectable on the Jaguar F-Type-R which is also strictly a 2-passenger car, the second Corvette Stingray is the most impractical sports car you can have at the moment in this segment. Overall, the Audi R8 really challenges its rivals to outshine in every way when it comes to the interior part. Some other standouts and optional interior features include:

  • Leather seats
  • 12-inch digital instrumentation display
  • Heated and ventilated seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Wireless smartphone charging
  • GT2 sport seats
  • Premium leather upholstery
  • Leather-wrapped interior panels
  • Suede headliner

How intuitive is the 2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe is quite intuitive and smart when it comes to infotainment setup. Many of the affordable cars now feature a fully digital instrument cluster and a large touchscreen that is fixed on the dashboard but that’s a selling point for those cheap sedans, not in this case.

The 8-inch touchscreen with the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Premium system with Navigation works well enough to be on par with the other cars in the segment. The base 10-speaker Bose sound system is more than good enough and a 14 speaker will come with the Corvette when moving up the trim levels in the 2LT version. Overall, it is certainly well packed and promising. Some other significant infotainment features include:

  • Head-up display
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi internet connection
  • Keyless entry with push-button start
  • 12-inch digital instrumentation display
  • Bluetooth audio streaming for 2 active devices
  • One-touch pairing
  • SiriusXM Radio with 3 months or 12-month subscription in the higher trims
  • Additional memory for in-vehicle apps
  • Enhanced voice recognition

Exterior
8.5/10

As far as the exterior design goes, Chevrolet has put in a lot of effort in designing and to completely give it a fresh look and even more aero efficiency and they have pulled it off so well. For starters, it got a complete redesign in 2020 with a mid-engine layout. To make it work, they had completely changed the shape of the bodywork. With a Mid-engine layout, it gets a design that is similar to European supercars.

Moreover, it was the most striking-looking Chevrolet ever to roll out of the company. The headlights are sharp, distinctive, and blend in well with the design cue of the car. The sharp front end gets a blacked-out grille with air vents on either side. There is also a large vent on the side right behind the doors which channels more air into the radiators and into the engine bay. Coming to the rear end, it still retains the split tail lights but with a sharp and aggressive design to complement the design language of the car.

The rear spoiler looks absolutely striking as well. Additionally, the rear spoiler adds to the rear end of the car. Moving on to the dimensions, it happens to be the longest car in its segment measuring a length of 182.3 inches, and also the lowest car measuring 48.6 inches which further offers good handling capabilities. Due to its low ground clearance of 5.3 inches, it struggles a bit in rough terrains. On the downside, it is one of the heaviest cars in the competition weighing 3647 lbs and sports a wheelbase of 107.2 inches which makes it a lazy car in the corner compared to its competition.

Among the competition, the Jaguar F-Type R is the heaviest and one of the shortest cars in this segment having a curb weight of 3843 lbs and measuring a length of 176 inches. The Porsche, on the other hand, offers the widest body measuring 79.7 which offers better stability in the corners. Moreover, with the shortest wheelbase of 96.5 inches, the Porsche takes corners with so much ease and less effort. Some other standouts and additional exterior features are as follows:

  • Transparent or carbon-fiber roof for the coupe
  • Various paint stripe schemes and carbon-fiber trim
  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Carbon Flash Exterior Badge Package
  • Solar-Ray light-tinted glass
  • Heated mirrors
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Quad exhaust pipes

Safety
8.5/10

With all that power under the hood, cars like these are most likely to have a crash and that’s where the Safety systems and the build quality comes into play. Well, the Chevrolet Corvette is certainly a robust car and comes with a wide suite of safety features. However, as with every other sports car, it has not been rated either by NHTSA or IIHS. It is also the same case with the 2021 model as well. The Corvette doesn’t come with each and every clever safety feature that is available today in other supercars in the segment but the significant ones are present as standard and only a few are optional. Some of the standout modern safety features include:

  • Digital rearview mirror
  • A blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Available Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Available HD Front and Rear Vision Cameras front camera is curb view
  • Daytime running lamps
  • Active handling stability control improves traction and enhances vehicle stability

Competition
8.0/10

2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe vs 2022 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe:

The Porsche 911 Carrera is undoubtedly the greatest sports car of all time and despite being a less powerful car, it manages to keep pace with the Corvette in acceleration and surpasses the Corvette Stingray in the top speed test.

Also, it offers a better fuel efficiency than the Corvette due to its lightweight nature. On the whole, the Porsche is a better sports car in terms of quality and performance but the Corvette is a better bargain for its money.

2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe vs 2022 Audi R8 Coupe:

The Audi R8 is the only car in the segment that comes with a magnificent V10 engine that shares the platform with the Lamborghini Huracan and a glorious exhaust note. It is also the fastest car in the segment delivering stellar performance.

On the flip side, it is the most expensive car here. Talking about interior and exterior looks, the Audi R8 is one of the best-looking cars inside out. If money is not a big deal, then the Audi R8 is the perfect choice in this segment.

2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe vs 2022 Jaguar F-type R:

The Jaguar F-Type is one of the company’s most successful cars and it still continues to do so. Having a supercharged V8, it produces a great exhaust note but loses out to the Corvette in terms of performance. However, both these cars are neck and neck in terms of fuel economy and range.

Both these cars offer equally comfortable and superior interiors. In a nutshell, both these cars are very close in terms of performance and all other aspects but when it comes to buying, the Corvette edges over the F-Type as a better performance car.

Final Verdict

The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is the most affordable way to buy a sports car. For a price that is half the price of other cars, it comes as a real deal here. It offers astounding performance as other German rivals, it offers a comfortable and striking interior as other cars in the segment, it also offers decent fuel economy despite having the largest engine in the segment. Well, it is the perfect entry-level sports car for the novice.
