Overview

The 2022 Nissan Altima is a stylish-looking family sedan that has gained attention for its comfortable interiors, smooth ride, and fuel-efficient powertrains. The official release date and pricing of 2022 Altima is yet to be announced but we expect by fall of 2021. It is not going to receive any facelift this year. Two engines are on offer- a 188-hp 2.5L inline-4 and a 248-hp 2.0L turbo-4 engine. The latter engine is so powerful that it can do 0-60 MPH sprint in 5.9 seconds.

The cabin of the Altima is nicely equipped with lots of features but the interior quality isn't that sophisticated. It is spacious inside but its infotainment system still lacks standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Safety-wise, the Altima earned top ratings and packs ample driver aids. The competition set of the Altima goes with the Honda Accord, the Toyota Camry, and the Hyundai Sonata. Is the Altima is good enough to take on these rivals? Read our complete in-depth review to find out.

Buying Advice

The SV trim is a great choice as it offers some important features such as an 8-inch touchscreen display with smartphone integration, LED headlights, and a leather steering wheel. It also adds additional safety aids such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic emergency braking and rear parking sensors. We also suggest equipping the SV Premium package.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

This latest Altima generation is more appealing thanks to solid fuel economy and useful driver safety aids- Edmunds

The midsize sedan segment is a popular one and the Nissan Altima tries to hold on to its place by adding some features this year. Now in its sixth generation, it features expressive styling and a comfortable interior. It is known for its acceleration but rather for its smooth ride quality. There are some drawbacks that keep the Altima from being the top pick in the segment.

Although carrying a Japanese badge, the Altima's running costs are a bit higher than other Japanese contenders such as the Accord and the Camry. You can expect around $7,100 every year for its maintenance, fuel, repair, etc. The Altima also has a great reliability score with a rating of 82 out of 100 while the Accord ranks on the top with 83 points.

Features
8.0/10

The Altima earns features points from infotainment and standard gear- The Car Connection

Like the outgoing model, the Nissan Altima will be available in five trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, and Platinum. The pricing for the 2022 Altima is yet to be released but the specs and features remain the same. The S trim is not available with an AWD drivetrain as opposed to the Platinum trim that comes standard with one.

The Altima offers plenty of standard features but still misses on standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is a kind of disappointment. It is also applicable for various optional packages. For 2022, a new Midnight Edition package is exclusively available for the SR trim. This package adds dark exterior accents throughout the car.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The Altima's two gasoline engines have lofty EPA fuel-economy ratings and even better real-world results- CarAndDriver

Both the engines of the Nissan Altima are frugal in nature. It is rated at 28 MPG in the city and 39 MPG on a highway, which equates to 32 MPG combined. Adding the AWD system drops 2 MPG. The 2.0L turbo four-pot returns 25 MPG in the city, 34 MPG on a highway, and 29 MPG combined. The fuel ratings are more or less the same as its class rivals.

The Altima has the largest fuel tank in the segment allowing it a greater overall range than the competition. It delivers an astounding 518 miles in mixed proportions while the AWD Altima drops it down to 480 miles. The VC-T SR model can drive up to 470 miles, which is the least range in the lineup. Therefore, choose the FWD Altima if you care for fuel economy and range.

The fuel efficiencies of the Hyundai Sonata and the Honda Accord are similar. Even the Toyota Camry's fuel estimates are similar but its efficiency is on the lower side. Here, the Altima ranks low in terms of fuel efficiency but its large tank saves the day. Except for the Altima, the rest of the rivals are also available with a hybrid powertrain for the best fuel economy.

Interior
7.0/10

The new Altima offers a slightly premium-feeling cabin that serves to raise the standards of the midsize sedan segment- Autotrader

The Nissan Altima's interior quality is great but it's not as refined as its rivals. The dashboard has a sloppy design and comes down to the glove box, giving a unique look to it. It is also covered with simulated wood trim on top trims and has a nice tactile feel to it. There is one aluminum accent line running along with the dashboard and we wish they could have used more inside the cabin. The steering wheel is a flat bottom one and it rather complements the interior.

Cloth upholstery is standard but the SL and Platinum trims upgrade to leather-wrapped seats. Nissan's Zero Gravity seats provide high levels of comfort and support. Higher trims up the comfort levels with power-adjustable front heated seats and a power moonroof. Six-footers will complement ample passenger space in the front row. The rear row offers less legroom than the competition but headroom is decent. Overall, the Altima's interior is comfortable and decently spacious.

Only the S trim comes with a 7-inch touchscreen but it does not support smartphone integration which is a big drawback in this modern era. All other models house an 8-inch touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The touchscreen can be slow sometimes but the image quality is good. The 7-inch instrument cluster is analog with a small driver’s display in between. A 9-speaker Bose sound system is exclusive only on the top two trims.

The Altima has a cargo capacity of 15.4 cubic feet, which is average for this class. The good news is that the rear seats can be folded but not completely flat. This makes it easier to store long items and the load height is very low. There is ample storage under the driver's armrest. The car also gets usual stuff like door pockets, cupholders, etc. Some main cabin features are:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Leather steering wheel
  • Power front heated seats
  • Cloth & leather upholstery
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Universal garage door opener
  • 7 & 8-inch touchscreen
  • 7-inch instrument cluster
  • 9-speaker Bose sound system

Exterior
6.0/10

Now in its third year of production, the Altima continues to look fresh- Kelly Blue  Book

The Nissan Altima can be easily confused for a performance sedan. The exterior looks are sharp and muscular. The front-end itself is aggressive with angular headlamps and a lower bumper. The grille on this car reaches the bumper, thus increasing functionality and looking great at the same time. The Altima has the lowest ground clearance at 5.2 inches.

The hood has two contour lines going till the A-pillar and another that goes back of the car. The wheel arches house 16, 17, and 19-inch wheels depending on the trim level. With a wheelbase of 112.2, the Altima offers a great exterior stance compared to its rivals. At the rear, the taillight assembly has a blacked-out finish. There is a diffuser at the bottom with twin exhaust ports.

The Honda Accord sits 0.6 inches higher than the Altima. The short wheelbase of the Hyundai Sonata reflects its less rear legroom. Even the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord have short wheelbase but they don't suffer from the same problem. The light curb weight of the Accord aids in quicker acceleration than the Altima.

Some other exterior features are:

  • LED headlights
  • LED DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • Black grille with chrome surround
  • Active grille shutters
  • Chrome window trim
  • 16, 17 & 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Dual chrome exhaust tips

Safety
9.0/10

From the SV upwards, Nissan's Safety Shield 360 driver assistance system is standard- Carbuzz

The 2022 Nissan Altima is yet to receive safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS. Since there is no change in its chassis structure from the outgoing model, it is safe to consider the 2021 model's ratings. NHTSA gave it a 5-star rating whereas IIHS honored it with the Top Safety Pick+ award as it scored a 'Good' rating in every category.

A wide range of active safety features is standard on the Altima. As you climb the trim ladder, these features keep on adding. Certain driver aids are available for the base S trim under the Driver Assist package. Overall, the Altima can be considered safe for you and for the pedestrians too. Some notable safety features of the Altima include:

  • Forward collision warning with pedestrian detection
  • Forward & reverse automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Blind-spot detection
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Driver drowsiness monitor
  • ProPilot Assist
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Surround-view camera

Competition
7.0/10

2022 Nissan Altima vs 2022 Honda Accord

Visually both the cars are very attractive. The performance figures lean towards the Honda Accord side more but the Altima offers an AWD system too. The second-row legroom on the Accord is not only more but also the best in its class. The Accord is more fuel-efficient and offers a bit more cargo room. Unfortunately, smartphone integration is not standard in the Altima, and therefore, the Accord has an upper edge.

2022 Nissan Altima vs 2022 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry's base engine is powerful than the Altima and it also comes with a V6. Though it uses an automatic transmission, its fuel efficiency is better than the Altima. The Camry is also known for its sporty handling. Inside, the Camry is more spacious but the Altima comes with a lot of standard features. Safety is a strong suit for the Camry as it offers plenty of them. Moreover, low running costs and strong reliability make it a better option.

2022 Nissan Altima vs 2022 Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata with the turbocharged engine may be a bit faster but it isn't as exciting to drive as the Altima. The main winning point of the Sonata is its excellent gas mileage and posh-looking interiors. It offers more technological features for a lesser price but its rear legroom is less than the Altima. The Sonata also offers a long list of driver-assist features while its cargo space is also slightly better than the Altima.

Final Verdict

If you are very particular about design and sharp looks, then the 2022 Nissan Altima is a perfect sedan. Nissan has nailed the interior job on the Altima lately and it's all about comfort. It also does pretty well in terms of safety but the performance isn’t astounding. Just get some additional extras like leather seats, and you will have a real value-for-money car in your garage. If you want something different than the crowd, then the Altima is a great sporty option to have.
