Overview

The 2022 Dodge Charger is a 4-door sedan with significant power to flaunt and a spacious cabin to get comfortable. An improved alarm system is now optional on the lower trims of the Charger. The 2022 Charger goes for sale at a starting price of $30,980 and it extends up to $37,980 for the R/T trim. Two engines are on offer- a 300-hp V6 and a 370-hp V8. The Scat Pack, SRT Hellcat, and SRT Hellcat Redeye get more powerful forms of the V8.

Both RWD and AWD configurations are available, depending on the trim. According to Dodge, there's also a 1000-hp SRT Ghoul coming next year. Inside, the cabin quality is average but it gets high points for its roomy interior and a highly intuitive infotainment system. In terms of safety, the Charger misses on standard driver aids. It goes up against the Chrysler 300, the Toyota Avalon, and the Nissan Maxima.

Buying Advice

If you’re looking at the Dodge Charger for an easy-to-maintain, instrument of a daily commute, the GT trim looks perfect. While the V6 engine is more sedate than its other options, and other V6s as well, the added bonus of all-weather traction through AWD is an important aspect of a daily driver. The GT trim provides plenty of comforts as well as the best of infotainment and electronics Dodge has to offer. For a balance between daily usability, long-term reliability, all-season driveability, and controlled fuel costs, stick to the GT trim.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

No other American sedan has the same combination of performance, comfort and muscle car style as the Charger- Edmunds

In a time when sedans are dying, Dodge continues to be very different from their rivals by offering a sedan with legitimate performance and a really mean look. It combines a lot of styling with a nice and affordable price tag. Being a full-size sedan, it does flaunt a spacious cabin and a decently sized trunk. Another area where it excels is reliability with a J.D. Power score of 83 out of 100.

Compared to its class rivals, the Charger has a pretty good score. However, the interior quality is not up to the mark while the list of standard safety features is really disappointing. Coming to ownership, the 2022 Charger can cost up to $7,700 for its maintenance, repairs, fuel, etc. That's a lot less than the Maxima but slightly more than the Avalon.

Features
7.0/10

We think Dodge's approach to standard features is quite smart- Carbuzz

The Dodge Charger comes in three trims- SXT, GT, and R/T. The SXT starts from $30,980 while the R/T costs up to $37,980. These prices exclude a destination fee of $1,595. RWD is standard but AWD is a $3,000 option available only on the SXT and GT trims. The Charger is also available in Scat Pack, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Redeye models with a more powerful form of Hemi V8.

The standard features list in the Charger is perfect for those who want to experience the bare power of the car with added safety, convenience, and comfort features. Speaking of safety, Dodge offers a majority of driver aids is optional. Therefore, you need to upgrade to the Technology package and Driver Convenience Group that adds all the available safety features in the Charger.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The Charger is a big, heavy car with a healthy appetite for fuel- CarAndDriver

The Dodge Charger with the V6 returns 19 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on a highway, and 23 MPG combined, which are pretty respectable figures and are on par with its class rivals. Adding an AWD system reduces fuel economy by 2 MPG. The V8 in the R/T trim makes more power and hence, is a fuel burner and hence,

The fuel economy is significantly less and is not a tight choice for fuel-conscious people. The fuel ratings are 16 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on a highway, and 19 MPG combined. All Chargers come with an 18.5-gallon fuel tank that can deliver between 351 and 426 miles, all thanks to the large fuel tank.

The Toyota Avalon's fuel economy is the best in this segment. The closest to it is the Nissan Maxima with a combined mileage of 24 MPG. The Chrysler 300 has the same powertrain as the Charger and hence, the same fuel ratings. Comparatively, the Charger fares well against its rivals in this field.

Interior
7.0/10

Build quality is good but not great- Edmunds

This is one department where the Dodge Charger suffers in the competition. Neither it has the most attractive and eye-catching interior of them all, nor the quality of materials used backs it up for the lack of a good-looking interior. Yes, looks are subjective, and there will be people who like the interior design of the Charger, but the majority will agree that there are better-looking interiors out there in the competition.

The interior might be functional, but the average build quality makes it lose its edge in the competition. The use of too much-rubberized materials ruins the feel of it. The seats are treated with cloth and they are comfortable enough for long drives. The power-adjustable driver's seat further amps the driver's comfort. As for passenger space, both rows can accommodate grown adults without any compromise.

One of the good things about the Charger's interior is its Uconnect infotainment system. All Chargers come with an 8.4-inch touchscreen except for the SXT trim which gets a 7-inch display. Both Android Auto and APple CarPlay are standard. The interface is easy to use, and it responds quickly to the inputs as well. Thanks to its sleek graphics, the visibility is good. The GT and R/T trims pack a 6-speaker Alpine sound system with good sound quality.

Being a sedan, the Charger also has respectable trunk space. It flaunts 16.5 cubes of cargo capacity, which is not the best in the class but still good. The rear seats can be folded for more space but the odd shape of the trunk makes it challenging to load the cargo area. Inside the cabin, storage is average. Some other interior features are:

  • Leather steering wheel
  • Alloy foot pedals
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Push-button start
  • Cloth sport seats
  • 7 & 8.4-inch touchscreen display w/ smartphone integration

Exterior
7.0/10

Dodge's Charger is a blend of a handsome family sedan and aggressive muscle car- Carbuzz

The 2022 Dodge Charger does have a unique-looking exterior design which makes it quite distinctive on the road. Its mean and aggressive look is so popular that people just love it. The aggressive front fascia is dominated by the black mesh grille and a hood scoop. Down below, the lower fascia has a front lip spoiler and LED fog lamps. Punctuating the grille are the thin halogen headlights.

As for wheels, the base SXT trim sits on 17-inch wheels while the AWD model gets 19-inch wheels. The GT trim and upwards come standard with 20-inch wheels. At 198.4 inches, the Charger is one of the longest sedans in its segment. At the back, the Charger has a very cool retro design. It looks like nothing else in the segment. The large spoiler and the roof can be blacked out.

The Nissan Maxima is a full-size sedan but its overall length and wheelbase are smaller than its rivals. This affects its rear passenger space and trunk volume. The Toyota Avalon weighs less than the Charger and hence, its acceleration is tad bit quicker. The Chrysler 300 and the Charger belong to the same parent company and therefore, similar exterior dimensions. Some other exterior features are:

  • Halogen headlights
  • LED DRLs & taillights
  • LED fog lights
  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • Hood scoop
  • Dual exhaust chrome tips
  • Rear decklid spoiler
  • 17, 19, 20-inch alloy wheels

Safety
4.0/10

The big Dodge sedan does offer a host of driver-assistance technology- CarAndDriver

The 2022 Dodge Charger got a 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. IIHS didn't rate the 2022 model but the outgoing model received 'Good' ratings in almost all crash tests. It also received a 'Superior' rating for the front crash prevention but the headlights were rated 'Poor and it could have been better.

Therefore, the Charger didn't get any special honor from IIHS. To keep the occupants safe, Dodge offers a decent list of active and passive safety features. However, except for the regular safety features, all the driver aids are kept optional. The Technology package and the Driver Convenience Group add all these features. These include:

  • Full-speed forward collision warning with active braking
  • Lane departure warning with lane keep assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear park assist system
  • Advanced brake assist
  • Hill-start assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Rearview camera

Competition
8.0/10

2022 Dodge Charger vs 2022 Chrysler 300

The Chrysler 300 and the Charger are practically corporate cousins with similarities in many aspects. Both of them also have virtually the same pros and cons. Both of them offer a roomy cabin, an intuitive infotainment system, and a large trunk. But you want some eye-watering performance, or want to put the drag strip on fire, the Charger is your only choice. You have the SRT Hellcat and the SRT Hellcat Redeye for that job.

2022 Dodge Charger vs 2022 Toyota Avalon

The Toyota Avalon is a fine option in this segment but it is priced more. The Avalon is a great car to drive but it also delivers great gas mileage and a supple ride. However, it cannot match the V8-powered variants of the Charger in terms of raw performance. The Avalon does take the edge in the safety aspect with its long list of standard driver aids. Therefore, the Avalon should be your choice if you prioritize fuel economy and safety.

2022 Dodge Charger vs 2022 Nissan Maxima

The Nissan Maxima is priced relatively higher than the Charger. Both have a potent V6 but the Charger is a raw performance machine and is more engaging to drive. The main drawback of the Maxima is a small trunk and cramped rear seat. On the plus side, it offers a lengthy list of standard driver-assist features and a user-friendly infotainment system. The Maxima may not be an agile car but it is a good family car.

Final Verdict

Although being a 4-door sedan, the 2022 Dodge Charger is still a very niche product in the market. Despite the competition in the sedan segment is gradually decreasing, the Charger still faces some steep competition from some of the more competent cars in its class. Dodge has done a great job in the performance aspects of the car but the interior and the overall creature comfort aspect of the car need some improvement.
