Overview

Following the success of the Mercury Cougar and the Ford Mustang in 1964, Dodge hatched the Charger and placed it as an upscale and comfortable vehicle. Soon after its launch, the Charger became a hit, especially as a muscle car. However, the success took a hit with the B-body and L-body chargers. The sedan returned after a hiatus of almost two decades in an all-new avatar and has managed to live up to its popularity back in the days. FCA made the car even more popular amongst enthusiasts with several high-performance versions such as the Scat Pack, Widebody, and SRT Hellcat. Even after the facelifts and redesigns, the Charger retains its muscular appeal.

Buying Advice

The base SXT trim almost justifies its price tag due to the solid set of standard features on offer. However, the GT trim is recommended for a sportier experience over the base model with a reasonable increase in price. The more powerful R/T trim is best for having that classy V8 experience and a couple of extra features such as a unique wheel design and an active exhaust system.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

According to the released information, the 2023 Dodge Charger will arrive unchanged, and there has been speculation that the brand might pull the plug on its supercharged V8 soon. The regular versions of the Charger double up as a great urban companion apart from an eager mile muncher. However, the V8-powered models, especially that 707 horsepower generating Hellcat, are better reserved for the enthusiasts due to their poor gas mileage. Even though Dodge hasn’t made it official yet, the 2023 Charger is expected to arrive with a similar lineup of 5 trim levels with a base price of around $32,000. The Charger will rival the Toyota Avalon, the Nissan Maxima, and the Chrysler 300.

Features
7.0/10

The 2023 Dodge Charger is expected to arrive with 5 trim levels like the last year’s model which are SXT, Sport, G/T, Scatpack, and the SRT Hellcat. Both the Scatpack and the Hellcat will be reviewed separately. Coming to the 2023 Charger, the sedan will start with the basic SXT trim level that, despite being the base trim, comes loaded with features such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a two-zone climate control, and power-operated front seat adjustment among others. While the base SXT and the upper GT trims get a basic 3.6-liter V6, the R/T gets a bigger 5.7-liter V8 through which more power and torque come into play. The R/T builds up on the GT trim and swaps out the regular exhaust for an active unit along with getting a trim-specific wheel design.

Release Date

The 2023 Dodge Charger is expected to be released by fall 2022. However, no official release date has been confirmed by the brand yet.

Fuel Economy
6.9/10

Muscle cars were never quite fuel-efficient due to performance-focused mechanicals, and the Charger fails to shed its old traits as well. The 2023 Charger is expected to return similar gas mileage numbers as the last year’s model due to the carryover powertrains. With the base 3.6-liter V6 under its hood, the Charger returns a maximum of 19 mpg within the urban boundaries while the number shoots up to 30 mpg while driving out on the highways. The combined mileage number stands at 23 mpg. With a sizable gasoline tank of 18.5-gallon, the Charger can offer some impressive driving range numbers too such as a 352-mile city driving range and 555-mile highway driving range.

The Chrysler 300 has similar fuel economy and driving range numbers to the Dodge Charger. The Nissan Maxima has marginally better city mileage at 20 mpg and combined mileage at 24 mpg but has a slightly smaller gas tank of 18-gallon. The Toyota Avalon takes the lead here with 22 mpg of city mileage and 32 mpg of highway mileage. The combined mileage of the Avalon is rated at 26 mpg. However, the driving range number of the Avalon falls short in front of the rivals here due to its smaller 14.5-gallon gas tank capacity.

Interior
7.0/10

As much as the Dodge Charger is all exciting and muscular on the outside, on the inside, the car is equally modest and ordinary. The 2023 Charger would see no updates on the interior hence we’ll get to see the same rubber-clad cabin once more. However, all the controls within the cabin are well placed and within reach of the driver’s seat. The dashboard design might look primitive as per today’s trend, but it boasts of a highly functional design. The steering wheel carries a comfortable design that offers a perfect grip, even during those lightning-fast inputs in case you decide to go sideways and smoke some rubber instead of a cigar. There are a decent amount of storage spaces inside while both the front and rear occupants get to enjoy ample headroom and legroom. The seats are comfortable, even at the back and the front seats get fully electrically adjustable function right from the base SXT trim onwards.

The slanting roofline would make getting in and out of the sedan’s rear seats almost impossible without the occupants brushing their heads against the roofline. There are rubberized surfaces all throughout the cabin that might fade any feeling of premium despite paying quite the price, especially for the high-performance models. The trunk space is also decent and at par with the rivals at 16.5 cu-ft.

The Chrysler 300 might be a mechanical twin of the Dodge Charger but on the inside, it’s a lot upscale and better than the latter. The interior is laden with premium materials and the dashboard gets a leather treatment on the lower half with contrasting stitching. The center stack gets a wooden insert while the seats offer excellent comfort levels. The Nissan Maxima’s interior design looks a bit different than the rivals’ here and is more driver-centric as well. However, the rear seats of the Maxima suffer from subpar amounts of legroom. The trunk space is also on the lower side. The Toyota Avalon houses what you’d say is a truly modern design when compared to the other sedans here. The headroom and legroom on offer are also excellent and the trunk capacity is at par with the rivals here as well.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Dodge Charger include:

  • Keyless ignition and entry
  • Two-zone climate control
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Remote ignition capabilities
  • Fully power-adjustable front seats

How intuitive is the 2023 Dodge Charger’s infotainment system?

The infotainment of the 2023 Dodge Charger is rather simple when compared to its rivals. The standard system is a 7-inch touchscreen display running FCA’s UConnect interface along with features such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth. There is an optional 8.4-inch touchscreen display on offer along with available features such as navigation, Alpine audio system, satellite radio, and a 19-speaker premium Harman Kardon audio setup. The user interface is smooth and easy to use and provides ample scope to play around with the menu items.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 Dodge Charger include:

  • 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display with UConnect
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • 4 USB ports
  • Bluetooth
  • Satellite radio(optional)
  • Navigation(optional)
  • 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system(optional)

Exterior
7.0/10

After the 2015 model year’s redesign, the Dodge Charger was made to look as menacing as it can get while keeping its muscular appeal intact. Since then there have been no significant design upgrades but the sedan looks just fine even today as well. At the front, the design has become sleeker than the previous generation’s model while the cuts and creases on the front fascia give the car a handsome appeal. The hood has a muscular design too with smooth flowing lines while the side profile remains rather simple. At the rear, the design might remind you of the good old Viper momentarily while the LED tail lamp units make the car appealing even front the rear as well.

The Charger’s exterior dimensions are slightly higher than its immediate rivals, making it quite a task to fit inside a tight parking spot. Also, the wheelbase is longer than average on the Charger when compared to most of the competitors which also translates to ample legroom at the rear of the vehicle. Ground clearance is decent at 5.2 inches.

The Chrysler 300 always had a special place in this segment due to its design and the latest iteration of the sedan makes things even better. Irrespective of its design, the Chrysler 300 is nearly identical to the Charger in terms of exterior dimensions. The Nissan Maxima looks the most aggressive one here with its sharp styling on the outside. Moreover, the tasteful blacked-out treatment makes the Maxima look more like a sports sedan but on a budget. However, its external dimensions are the lowest when compared to the peers here and its short wheelbase also results in subpar legroom at the rear. The Toyota Avalon used to be a handsome sedan from the brand but Toyota seems to have messed up with the design of the current model of the sedan. The front fascia looks quite polarizing while the rest of the car’s design looks sharp. However, it still has smaller dimensions on the outside as compared to the FCA twins.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 17-inch wheels
  • LED fog lamps
  • Heated ORVMs
  • Trim-specific wheel design(GT trim onwards)

Safety
4.0/10

The Dodge Charger scored some commendable safety scores for the current model year and, due to no changes happening to it, the 2023 Charger is also expected to bring home similar scores as well. Both the NHTSA and the IIHS awarded their highest overall rating to the sedan after assessing the safety of the Charger while you won’t get the driver assistance techs as standard on either of the models. The ADAs tech is offered as an option which includes features such as front collision detection and mitigation system, lane keeping assist, and rear cross-traffic alert among others.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Automatic high-beam headlamps
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Blind Spot monitoring system
  • Lane keeping assist

Competition

2023 Dodge Charger vs 2022 Toyota Avalon

The Toyota Avalon has been a faithful sedan from the brand for a long time now and sees itself competing with the Charger. Both are completely different vehicles in terms of target audience and design but the Charger fares better in the design aspect. The Avalon takes the lead in terms of overall cabin quality and fuel economy numbers when compared to the Charger, and is a more reliable vehicle too.

2023 Dodge Charger vs 2022 Nissan Maxima

The Nissan Maxima has been serving fullsize sedan shoppers since the late 80s and is still a solid offering in its class. However, the Dodge Charger still triumphs over it in several key areas. Apart from the lack of rear seat space, the Maxima doesn’t offer the same excitement or engagement as the Charger too. In terms of fuel economy figures, the Maxima is almost identical to the Charger and the 300 sedans. On the inside, the Maxima is better than the Charger only in terms of the modern design language.

2023 Dodge Charger vs 2022 Chrysler 300

The Chrysler 300 is essentially a mechanical copy of the Dodge Charger since they share the same stable. Despite a lot of similarities, the Chrysler 300 excels in some aspects such as offering impressive levels of features and comfort inside the cabin. In terms of similarities, it is as powerful and fuel-efficient as the Charger, despite its more curb weight than a lot of rivals in its class. In the design aspect, the Chrysler 300 is solid but the Charger takes advantage of its visually more muscular appeal.

Final Verdict

The 2023 Dodge Charger would be a carryover model from the current model year. Hence, there would be no changes as per the latest information. The Charger tries to tread on a different path with its agility and performance among which, the former used to be missing on the earlier models. However, there has been speculation that the Charger powered by gasoline motors will be discontinued. Hence, you can get yourself one before we are forced to say goodbye to this legendary car.
