Overview

The 2020 Ford Expedition is currently on sale and has a base price of $54,505. With just a few minor changes, Ford plans on continuing with its successful game plan. The King Ranch trim is all-new for 2020 and joins the XLT, Limited, and Platinum trims in the lineup. The 375-hp turbo V6 is plenty powerful and offers an agile acceleration. Moreover, for its size, its fuel economy is good while its towing capacity is rated at 9,300 pounds.

2020 Ford Expedition Buying Advice

Ford has hardly made any major changes to the Ford Expedition in the past couple of years since the last overhaul back in 2018. Therefore, budget buyers could opt for the older used Ford Expedition for availing the discounted price. We recommend opting for the 2018 Expedition and saving money on depreciation.

The cabin of the Expedition has an attractive layout and offers class-leading space levels in all three rows. It packs a modern and user-friendly infotainment system with a long list of features. Ford's Co-Pilot360 is now standard this year in every model, making itself stand out in the class. The primary rivals to the Expedition include the Chevrolet Tahoe, the GMC Yukon, the Toyota Sequoia, and the Nissan Armada.

2020 Ford Expedition for sale

Available for sale at a starting price of $54,505, the 2020 Ford Expedition is pricier than most of its rivals. That said Ford offers both finance and lease options to buyers. The Ford Expedition finance plans begin at $951/month at 3.9% for a 60-month period with a $5,451 down payment. The Expedition lease deals start at $855/month for a tenure of 36 months and 12,000 miles of annual mileage limit with an acquisition fee of $665 with the same down payment amount.

Buying Advice

The Limited trim packs in a lot of premium features at a very reasonable cost and which is why it is the model to choose among the lot. It adds 20-inch alloy wheels, tri-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system, heated second-row leather seats, and many more. Add the 302A package to your shopping list as it adds adaptive cruise control w/ stop & go panoramic sunroof, and a voice-activated navigation system with pinch-to-zoom capability.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

A refresh is due, but there’s not much to fault with the current Expedition- Motor1

The 2020 Ford Expedition continues to boast of mammoth interior space and class-leading cargo space. With the SYNC3 infotainment system, Ford has ensured that the millennials and the tech-hungry people won’t be left disappointed while using the same on a day-to-day basis. While its rivals house a V8, its turbocharged V6 delivers impeccable performance while also being fuel-efficient.

Apart from its high price tag, the Expedition also has high ownership costs due to its high depreciation value. So if you plan on buying one, get ready to bear some high costs. You can expect somewhere around $13,500 per year, including maintenance, fuel, repair, insurance, etc. Also, its reliability rating isn't that impressive too. It scored 78 out of 100 in the J.D. Power reliability test while its rivals have much better ratings.

Buying Advice

The 2020 Ford Expedition Limited model packs in a lot of premium features at a very reasonable cost and which is why it is the model to choose among the lot. It adds 20-inch alloy wheels, tri-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system, heated second-row leather seats, and many more. Add the 302A package to your shopping list as it adds adaptive cruise control w/stop & go, panoramic sunroof, and a voice-activated navigation system with pinch-to-zoom capability.

Features
8.0/10

At a base level, the Expedition provides enough features to be on par with rivals- Carbuzz

The Ford Expedition comes in just four trims namely XLT, Limited, King Ranch (new for 2020), and Platinum. The base XLT starts at $52,810 for the RWD version while the top-of-the-line Platinum 4x4 trim goes up to $77,085. At the time of purchase, a hefty $1,695 destination charge is levied. Due to its high starting price, Ford offers plenty of standard comfort and convenience features.

Several optional packages are also available. The Black Accent package is new for this year for the XLT trim that adds gloss black front and rear skid plates, 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels, second-row captain chairs, trailer hitch cover, and tip-and-slide and power-folding features for $1,895. The top two trims don't come with any packages as they are equipped with all possible features.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

This class of hefty haulers certainly doesn't help preserve fossil fuels- CarAndDriver

With a massive V6 powering the big Ford, one wouldn't expect a good MPG figure but the 2020 Ford Expedition delivers on that. The clever EcoBoost motor delivers an astounding 17 MPG in the city, 23 MPG on a highway, and 19 MPG combined. These splendid figures, however, are available from the Expedition powered to the rear wheels.

Though the 4WD models drop down the fuel economy by 1 MPG, it's still the best in the segment. The 23.3-gallon fuel tank, at its full capacity, can deliver up to 396 miles in the city and 536 miles on a highway with a combined range of 443 miles, which is amongst the best in this competition. Higher the mileage, the fewer the stops at gas stations.

No other rival's fuel economy is close to the Expedition. The Chevy Tahoe ranks below the Expedition and its fuel economy is pretty average for the class. The Nissan Armada's fuel estimates aren't that great but considering the power it makes, it's decent. The Toyota Sequoia probably has the worst fuel efficiency.

Interior
9.0/10

It may not be a luxury sedan, but the Expedition does a fair impression of one- Edmunds

The 2020 Ford Expedition can seat 8 people at ease and with the proportions, and it's rather comfortable for all the occupants. It is also available with second-row captain chairs which reduces seating capacity to seven. The gigantic doors, big running boards, and nicely positioned door handles, make for easy access inside the Expedition. As expected from an SUV of this class, the Expedition exceeds most expectations with its comfort levels offered from the seats. Every row of the Expedition has superb cushioning and support for passengers of all sizes.

Speaking of upholstery, cloth, leather, and premium leather seats are available based on trim levels. Even on the base trim, the driver's seat can be adjusted electronically in 8 directions. The front seats get heated, ventilated, and massaged functions on higher trims. The flat-folding second row of seats also gets heated functions and facilitates entry into the third row. Talking about the third row, the Expedition can accommodate adults easily. The seats can be reclined to improve comfort while the sliding second-row seats take things up a notch.

The SYNC 3 infotainment system ranks as one of the best in the automobile world today and Ford has equipped the Expedition with the same. The touchscreen is very fluid to use and is one of the easiest to understand and get accustomed to systems in the segment. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and the physical controls are arranged neatly in the center stack. We do however want to point out that the standard navigation system isn't the best to use as the graphics look dated and are slower to load than Google Maps.

Thanks to its large proportions, the Expedition has one of the biggest cargo spaces in its segment. You get a trunk volume of 19.3 cu-ft., which further expands to 63.6 cu-ft. thanks to power-folding third-row seats. if you are not satisfied with this, the second-row seats can be folded to reveal a ginormous 104.6 cu-ft. of cargo space. One thing is for sure, people won't complain about the lack of space in the Expedition. Some of the few interior features include:

  • Power tilt & telescopic multi-function leather, heated steering wheel
  • 10-way power front heated, ventilated & massaged front seats
  • Heated second-row chairs & Power-folding third-row seats
  • Three-zone automatic climate control

Exterior
7.0/10

There’s a family resemblance to the Explorer in the overall profile and lighting units- Kelly Blue Book

The 2020 Ford Expedition does resemble a lot like its cousin, the Lincoln Navigator from a lot of angles and it seems like the Ford designers have taken a cue from design books of Lincoln. The Expedition is one of the biggest SUVs you can buy in the US market now. Look at it from any angle, and the big and daunting stance may intimidate you. On the front, the Expedition seems to have taken its inspiration from the F-150 and the C-shaped headlamps are a sharp reminder of the same. There are up to 7 paint color options available depending on the trim.

From the side, the Expedition looks old school and sharp both at the same time because of the big doors and the sharp lines that surround the same. The wheel arches house 18, 20, and 22-inch alloy wheels depending on the trim level. The Expedition has a wide wheelbase that speaks for its spacious interior and a compared ride quality. The rear end of the SUV may be the least talked about as the big tailgate houses a big chrome slab that runs through the tailgate up to the taillights.

Comparatively, the Chevy Tahoe sist slower than the other large SUVs. This can be helpful to get in and out of the vehicle easily. The Nissan Armada flaunts a wide wheelbase like the Expedition but its third row isn't roomy. At 5,730 pounds, the Toyota Sequoia is the bulkiest SUV in this competition and hence, it is low on agility. Some noteworthy exterior features are:

  • LED auto high-beam headlights w/LED DRLs
  • LED taillights & LED fog lamps
  • Puddle lamps
  • Power-folding heated exterior mirrors
  • Chrome grille with active grille shutters
  • Chrome door handles & Chrome window trim
  • Power-retractable running boards
  • 18, 20 & 22-inch alloy wheels

Safety
8.0/10

The 2020 Expedition now comes standard with a bevy of safety technology- The Car Connection

The 2020 Ford Expedition gets strong scores in safety tests conducted by NHTSA and is a perfect testimony to Ford's commitment towards safety. A 5-star overall safety rating was allotted to the Expedition. Individually, it received five stars for the frontal and side-impact crash tests. For the rollover test, RWD models received three stars while the 4Wd  versions were given four stars.

IIHS has not conducted any crash tests on the Expedition yet. Nevertheless, the Expedition is a safe vehicle. Also, new for 2020 is Ford's Co-Pilot360 which is now standard on every Expedition. It includes a suite of top driver-assist features. There are a few other active safety features available under different packages. These include:

  • Adaptive cruise control w/stop & go
  • Front & rear parking sensors
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Automatic parking assist
  • 360-degree camera & Ford MyKey
  • Blind-spot monitoring w/Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane departure warning & Lane keep assist
  • Forward collision warning & Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Pedestrian detection

Competition
7.5/10

2020 Ford Expedition vs 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevrolet Tahoe is one of the most popular SUVs in the segment. It offers a lot of equipment on the technology front yet fails to offer the kind of interior space that the Expedition offers. It likewise has less amount of cargo space when compared to the Expedition. The Expedition has a higher towing limit and delivers better mileage. The Tahoe falls short on standard safety techs but is less pricey and hence is worth a look.

2020 Ford Expedition vs 2020 Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada is the Japanese rendition of what a big full-size SUV should be against the American-dominated SUV. The Armada offers a lot of value and practicality in its interiors like the Expedition but offers a better-built interior. In terms of the engine power as well, the Armada beats the Expedition by a good margin. However, the Expedition manages to tow a lot more than the Armada and be much more fuel-efficient without compromising on the performance.

2020 Ford Expedition vs 2020 Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia is priced less than the Expedition but has the lowest towing capacity in this segment. Its fuel economy is also the worst. Perhaps, the Sequoia offers class-leading cargo volume and good levels of space on the inside. In terms of infotainment, the Sequoia lags behind the Expedition. However, it has an upper hand with regard to reliability and ownership costs. Therefore, if you are tight on your budget, the Sequoia isn't a bad buy for the price.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Ford Expedition has upgraded itself over its predecessor in every way possible like its interior capacity, cargo volume, efficiency, and styling. The Expedition comes loaded with the latest security tech and other superb features. Buyers who are searching for more extravagance may find the Lincoln Navigator additionally satisfying but for what the Ford offers and the price it comes at, the Expedition is an SUV that is hard to beat.
