Overview

The Ford Explorer is the one that kick-started the three-row mid-size SUV segment but based on a pickup truck's platform it surely wasn't the best in the segment. Fast forward to 2020 and Ford has completely redesigned the Explorer from grounds up and it now has a unibody construction instead of a body-on-frame chassis. The changes have improved the overall cabin design and space, ride and handling also have got better. While both the engine options doing duty on the Explorer packs in sufficient punch to motivate this SUV even with a full load and have best-in-class tow ratings.

The all-new Explorer starts at $32,765 and has got just a $400 price bump which is phenomenal for the changes it got. The new Explorer comes with the Ford CoPilot360 package, as standard, that packs in a host of driver-assist features thus helping it bag the top honors of 'Top Safety Pick+' from IIHS. That being said, during all this time rivals like Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and Chevrolet Traverse have grabbed a considerable share in this segment. Will the new Explorer manage to gain its lost glory and beat the sales figures of the top-selling Honda Pilot? Let's find out in the review below.

Buying Advice

The price of the Ford Explorer catapults to the price of a full-size SUV very soon as you go higher in the trim ladder, so we suggest sticking to the base trim. It gets all the necessary features which would be more than enough for a majority of the buyers although if you want all the bells and whistles in your Explorer then your next best bet would be the Limited trim priced a shade below fifty grands.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

With the complete redesign and two powerful engine options, the 2020 Ford Explorer comes with a price range starting at $32,765 and maxing out at $58,250 for the topmost Platinum trim. Choose whichever trim and engine option the Explorer promises a decent amount of punch, quick acceleration timings, a spacious cabin, class-leading towing capacity, and respectable fuel economy figures.

As is the case with most mid-size SUVs, the cabin space in the Explorer is sufficient in the first two rows but third-row seats are cramped. That being said, the Explorer has its fundamentals spot on and remains the top-rated SUV in terms of safety. If that's not all then read further our detailed section-wise review of the Explorer and side-by-side comparison with its rivals.

Features
7.0/10

The 2020 Ford Explorer can be categorized as a three-row mid-size SUV which is available in a total of five trims namely base, XLT, Limited, ST, and Platinum. The Limited trim is also available in a hybrid version which we have covered in a separate review, so don't forget to check it out. The 2020 Explorer comes with two engine options and a choice of either RWD or AWD with the ST and Platinum trim only available in the AWD version. The 2020 Explorer starts at $32,765 for the base trim powered by a turbo-four engine which also does duty on the XLT and Limited trim. The Platinum trim starts at $58,250 and is powered by a twin-turbo V6 while the same engine does duty in a higher state of tune on the ST trim priced at $54,740.

The base trim packs in essential sets of features while the XLT trim priced at $36,925 gets only a couple of features added over the base trim. The Limited trim starting at $48,380 is the one that gets plenty of features on offer right from creature comfort features to premium audio setup and advanced driver-assist features. The ST trim is based on the Limited trim but gets a couple of performance upgrades with a different exterior styling to differentiate it from the regular Explorer. The top-dog Platinum trim is also based on the Limited trim but adds a premium cabin covered in leather, unique exterior bits, a bigger sunroof, etc.

There are also a couple of noteworthy optional packages for the 2020 Explorer which you should know. The Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package available on the XLT trim adds advanced driver-assist features like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and a navigation system. Cold Weather package adds a heated steering wheel, heated front and rear seats, and a windshield wiper de-icer. The ST and Platinum trims offer a Premium Technology package that adds a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system, a massage function for front seats, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen display.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The 2020 Ford Explorer powered by a turbo-four engine has an EPA estimated gas mileage of 21 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg under mixed driving conditions. Adding the AWD sees a 1 mpg drop across in all three conditions. While the twin-turbo V6 powered Explorer has an EPA estimated gas mileage of 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway which is respectable for the power and torque it produces.

Since the rival SUVs come with a V6 engine they are bound to be less fuel-efficient than the turbo-four powered Explorer. But the Highlander has a surprise for you, it not only matches the city gas mileage but also better the highway gas mileage of the Explorer by 1 mpg.

Interior
9.0/10

“A well-made SUV. There's plenty of soft-touch materials throughout the cabin; the steering wheel has quality leather; and the trim pieces look good and fit together well. The only flaw we noticed was an occasional dash rattle that we couldn't pinpoint.”-Edmunds

2020 Ford Explorer Seating and Comfort

The cabin of the 2020 Ford Explorer has been dramatically changed and now has a better layout thanks to the all-new unibody construction. The dashboard of the Explorer lacks any design flair but remains highly functional due to the neat and simple layout. Most of the controls are logically based and are easy to reach. With the improved cabin design, the outward visibility has also improved and so is the ingress and egress. One more thing that can be appreciated is Explorer’s capacity to filter out road noise thus making the cabin a quiet place and well equipped to take on longer journeys.

In the base form, the Explorer comes with seven people capacity while the higher trims with a captain's chair in the second-row seats offer seating for six. The base and the XLT trim come with cloth upholstery. If you want something more premium then the Limited trim comes with leatherette upholstery. The space and comfort are great only in the first two rows while third-row seats are not only cramped but also are very uncomfortable when seated over a long duration. That said, the second row seats can slide fore and aft and tumbles at a flip of a lever for increasing rear legroom and ease of access respectively.

2020 Ford Explorer Infotainment System

The 2020 Ford Explorer in the base and XLT trims are equipped with Ford’s SYNC system that runs on an 8-inch touchscreen display and comes with a standard 6-speaker audio system. Ford’s SYNC3 system which is a standard feature on the Limited and above trim is available as an option on the XLT trim. SYNC 3 is a user-friendly system with the interface being intuitive and offering a decent response time.

Higher trims offer a vertically-stacked Tesla-like 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system which not only looks like an afterthought but also comes in the line of sight while driving. The picture above showcases the 10.1-inch touchscreen system. Other available features on top trim are the premium Bang & Olufsen sound system, navigation, satellite radio, etc.

2020 Ford Explorer Cargo Capacity

The 2020 Ford Explorer offers 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space with all the seats up. The second-row seats offer 40/20/40 split-folding while the third-row seats can be folded in 50/50-split. With the third-row seats folded the Explorer frees up 43.9 cubic feet of space.

While with both the rear rows folded the cargo area increases to 81.7 cubic feet. That being said, the higher trims come with a hands-free liftgate which is very convenient when you are carrying luggage in both your hands.

Exterior
7.0/10

“Outside, the Explorer’s shape is clean and largely unadorned. Unlike Eddie Bauers of decades past, the current model doesn’t try to be faux rugged. It’s modern enough and smart in certain lighter shades with larger wheels. ”-TheCarConnection

2020 Ford Explorer Dimensions and Weight

The 2020 Ford Explorer has been completely redone this year. The older Explorer was based on a body-on-frame platform while the majority of its rivals had undergone major changes and shifted to unibody construction for better cabin space and overall driving dynamics. The new design of the Ford Explorer hasn't undergone a drastic change but the boxy look of the older Explorer has now been rounded off to make it look more relevant and up to current standards. That being said, there isn’t anything fancy as it sticks with a conservative design that doesn’t command any unwanted attention.

The 2020 Ford Explorer tips the scales at 4345 lbs. – it surely is the heaviest of the lot. It stretches to 198.8 inches from the front to the back. At 78.9-inches it is also the widest crossover in this comparison. In case you decide to leave the interstate and take the gravel road, the Explorer has a 7.9-inches ground clearance to avoid scratching its underbelly. That said, with 119.1-inches of space between the wheels, the wheelbase of the Explorer is only second to the Chevrolet Traverse, the one with the largest wheelbase.

Dimensionally the Chevrolet Traverse remains the biggest SUV among all if you don't consider its width which the Explorer has the most. Be it the overall length, height, or ground clearance the Chevrolet Traverse is a mammoth of an SUV beating everything in its stride. Even the track width of the Traverse is wider than any of the SUVs in this comparison.

Safety
8.0/10

The 2020 Ford Explorer comes with state-of-the-art safety equipment and advanced safety and driver-assist features that allow it to score well on the safety tests conducted by either of the agencies. The 2020 Explorer even managed to bag the 'Top Safety Pick+' award from IIHS with the highest rating of 'Good' in all six out of six parameters.

The NHTSA also shared a similar opinion and gave the 2020 Explorer a perfect score of five stars in overall safety ratings which were only possible due to the Explorer getting a perfect score in the front and side crash test and a four out of five stars rating in rollover mitigation test.

Safety Features:

  • Blind-spot monitor
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Rearview camera
  • Post-collision braking
  • Lane keep assist
  • Forward collision warning w/ automatic emergency braking

Competition
9.0/10

2020 Ford Explorer vs 2020 Honda Pilot

The 2020 Honda Pilot is powered by a V6 engine and starts at $31,450. It not only remains cheaper with a V6 than the Explorer with a turbo-four but is also quicker in both 0-60 mph and quarter-mile runs than the latter. The Pilot also offers respectable cabin and cargo space which although on paper the Explorer offers more but in the real world, the same isn't the case.

The Pilot is aimed towards a medium-size family who loves traveling and doing monthly grocery runs while both the tasks are taken care of with ease in either of the two SUVs. It is the long-term reliability and overall upkeep cost that plays a deciding role between the two. The Pilot being more reliable and cheaper to maintain thus remains a better pick.

2020 Ford Explorer vs 2020 Toyota Highlander

Powered by a V6 the Highlander remains underwhelming in terms of performance when pitted against the Explorer. The bigger V6-powered Highlander though manages to beat the gas mileage of the Explorer on the highway and matches its city gas mileage which is praiseworthy considering the Explorer is powered by a smaller inline-4.

In terms of cabin and cargo space, it is undoubtedly the Explorer which offers the best while the third-row seats are cramped in both the SUVs. Both the SUVs have immense road presence and offer sufficient ground clearance to tackle occasional off-road. That said since both the SUVs are more or less equally matched everything boils down to the reliability and long-term expenses which without a doubt is better on the Highlander.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Ford Explorer aims to be the hottest-selling three-row mid-size SUV in the market. For that, it comes with a spacious cabin, supple ride quality, eerily silent interiors, and powerful engine options. The optional all-wheel-drive and terrain management system ensures it can handle mild off-road trails with ease which isn't the case with most other softroaders masquerading as a three-row crossover SUV. That said, the long-term reliability and how the new unibody platform of the Explorer will age with time remains unknown thus making it hard to recommend over the much reliable and established rivals like the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander.
