Overview

With the 7-seater crossover SUV segment becoming highly competitive and is getting all the attention, Cadillac decides that it also wants a piece of the action and has launched the XT6. It sits between the full-blown Caddy Escalade and the smaller 5-seater XT5. The 2020 Cadillac XT6 gets the same underpinnings as the XT5 and the GMC Acadia. The XT6 is surprisingly nimble than the Escalade and with 7-seats it is also very family-friendly and practical.

Buying Advice

Since Sport trim is not any sportier than the standard one as well as the Premium tends to have almost all the practicality to suit the daily commuting, we recommend getting the Premium Luxury trim and using the saved money on optional features like the heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, along with other exterior trimmings to make it more catchy. One can also choose to spend them on the 14-speaker Bose premium stereo system.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The front fascia is inspired by the Escala concept car which also resembles the typical Cadillac look. The XT6 is all-new for 2020 and is getting a lot of attention because it looks great, is very spacious, has an upmarket interior, and also has a compact form factor. Here, the 2020 Cadillac XT6 will go up against the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, and the Acura MDX.

Features
8.0/10

The Cadillac XT6 is available in two trims – Premium Luxury and Sport. The Premium Luxury trim retails for around $52,695 and comes with a 3.5 L V6 under the hood. The Sport trim includes added comfort features like 9-speaker Bose Premium Audio System, Chassis Damping Control, Gloss Black Exterior Accents, Sport Pedals & Tap Up/Down Levers, Unique Sport 20" Wheels and Sport Front & Rear Fascia Elements. Moreover, the Sport trim gets a Heavy-duty cooling system as a standard while the same is available to the Premium Luxury as an option.

One special beauty about its trims is that they get their own specific tires that are specifically available to them only. The Premium Luxury gets the pairs of 20" 12-Spoke alloy wheels with a Fully Polished finish and the Sport has 20" 12-Spoke alloy wheels with a Pearl Nickel finish at its disposal.

Which Trim should you buy?

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The Cadillac XT6 is not as economical as its rivals. The main factor here is the naturally aspirated 3.6 L V6 engine. The rivals get smaller engines along with turbochargers, which helps in more efficient combustion and results in better fuel economy. The 2020 XT6 gives 18 MPG in the city and 25MPG on the highway which turns to around 20 MPG combined. With a fuel tank capacity of 19 gallons, it translates to 342 miles of range in the city and a maximum driving range of 475 miles on the highway.

The Volvo is the most economical car here with a whopping 30 MPG on the highway. It offers the maximum driving range as well, thanks to its powertrain prowess which gets that even with a relatively smaller tank. The Audi has the largest fuel tank in comparison but its sub-par fuel economy drags the range down a bit. Therefore, this makes the XC90 a benchmark to follow for others.

Interior
9.0/10

The 2020 Cadillac XT6 shines in the interior department. The materials used are top-notch and exquisite. You also get tri-zone automatic climate control to amp up interior comfort. The vehicle also gets an interior air filter unit. The XT6 can seat 7 people in three rows. You can also upgrade to heated second-row seats and ventilated front seats.

There are loads of space on offer. Even the third-row seats get an ample amount of space, with two adults being able to sit in absolute comfort. To enhance the interior ambiance, you also get a sunroof as standard. To sum it up, the cabin feels luxurious, with minimal vibrations and good NVH levels.

All the SUVs come with a seating capacity of 7. The Cadillac and the Volvo have the most practical and usable third-rows, while the third-rows in the other two are best suited for kids. Unfortunately, the XT6 misses out on the cargo capacity, being the least among all. But this can be overlooked for its ergonomics and comfort reasons. Standout interior features:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Power-adjustable and heated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Sunroof
  • Interior air filtration

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2020 XT6 gets an infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen display placed in the center of the dashboard. The system comes equipped with Android Auto and Apple Carplay. It also supports in-built navigation. The car is also wired for SiriusXM satellite radio.

The system is lag-free and is very intuitive to use, with lots of physical shortcut buttons. But the instrument cluster is not exciting. It gets an analog instrument cluster with a 4.5-inch driver information display. The vehicle also gets a Bose premium 8-speaker audio system with the option of a Bose Performance Series 14-speaker audio system. Standout infotainment features:

  • 8-inch touchscreen display
  • Bose premium 8-speaker audio system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Wireless device charging
  • Satellite radio
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • 4.5-inch driver information display

Exterior
6.0/10

The 2020 Cadillac XT6 will surely turn heads with its exterior styling. The boxy design holds the typical Cadillac approach yet symbolizes a ray of change with its silhouette. The crest grille goes well along with the headlights on the front fascia. The roofline has been kept lower for aerodynamics purposes for streamlined airflow. The car gets gorgeous 20" 12-Spoke alloy wheels with a Fully Polished finish for the Premium Luxury. The Sport trim gets the same curvature but with 20" 12-Spoke alloy wheels with a Pearl Nickel finish.

The XT6 is longer than most of its rivals but still, it gets the smallest wheelbase. That is the reason why the legroom in the 2nd and 3rd rows is a bit tight. The area where the Caddy lacks miserably is ground clearance.

The 6.7” ground clearance of the XT6 is not acceptable considering the fact that it is a 7-seater SUV. The Audi is miles ahead with 9.6” of ground clearance and added to that is the Quattro AWD system which means that the Q7 can do quite a bit of off-road activity as well. Standout exterior features:

  • LED headlamps
  • Signature crest grille
  • 20" 12-Spoke alloy wheels with Fully Polished finish
  • Rear lip spoiler
  • Fully functional Rear Dual Exhausts

Safety
9.0/10

NHTSA has given the 2020 XT6 a five-star rating and it is rated by the IIHS ‘Good’ along with the ‘Top safety pick+’ award. So, you can have complete peace of mind regarding its safety. The crumple zone gets enough area to deflect and distribute the impact stress throughout the frame. It has tough side beams as its limbs for the side-barrier uncertainties.

The XT6 comes with a forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, front and rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring for top-notch safety insurance. It continues to impress us with other advanced techs like the lane keep assist, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and the safety alert seat, all of which come as a standard. Some of the standout safety features in the 2020 Cadillac XT6 are:

  • Adaptive cruise control (optional)
  • Night Vision infrared pedestrian (optional)
  • Forward collision warning
  • Blindspot monitoring system
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane-keep assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection

Competition
8.0/10

2020 Cadillac XT6 vs 2020 Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 is both longer and wider than the XT6. It also has a longer wheelbase on offer along with the best ground clearance. Added to that, is the Quattro AWD system which makes it great even when the road ends. The Audi also has a more sophisticated and futuristic infotainment system and instrument cluster. The 2020 XT6 produces more power on paper, but the Audi feels livelier practically. Both the cars cost almost identical, so definitely the Audi Q7 is the better pick over here.

2020 Cadillac XT6 vs 2020 Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 has a more stunning interior design with a futuristic dashboard layout and infotainment system. The power and torque from the engine are also linear, unlike the XT6. The Volvo also offers good ground clearance and promises top-notch build quality, comfort, and safety. All this, and still it undercuts the XT6’s price tag by around $5,000 means that the Volvo is more value for money and the winner over here.

2020 Cadillac XT6 vs 2020 Acura MDX

The Acura MDX doesn't have features or comfort to match the Caddy, neither does it have the stunning looks or the road presence that the Caddy will offer. But it is more agile and spritely, has greater ground clearance, and is great on reliability. At $44,400, it is almost $9,000 cheaper than the Caddy, which makes it a great value-for-money proposition.

Final Verdict

The new Cadillac XT6 is a great pick in the segment. Even the base trim comes fully loaded with all the luxury appointments you can think of. You also have plenty of optional features to choose from but the price escalates quickly. But the 2020 Audi Q7 makes a lot more sense than the XT6. It comes at an identical price point while offering more of everything, more legroom, more road presence, more ground clearance, Quattro AWD system, off-road capabilities. Hence, one can go for it but better options are there in the market.
