Overview

The 2020 Land Rover Discovery starts at an MSRP of $52,300, making it about $650 cheaper than the 2019 model. It continues with SE, HSE and HSE Luxury trim levels but adds a new Landmark trim between the SE and HSE trims. Powered by either a 3.0-liter supercharged engine or a 3.0-liter diesel V6 engine, the power output stands at 340 hp and 254 hp respectively. Land Rover also adds two new exterior colors, additional standard equipment and improved infotainment features. For a more affordable and compact alternative, you can checkout the Discovery Sport

2020 Land Rover Discovery Buying Advice

Compared to previous year, the starting price has dropped by $650. Land Rover added a new Landmark trim, two new colors, more standard features like blind spot monitoring, power-folding mirrors with heating and memory settings, and approach lighting with the base S trim and added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, which was previously optional. So, surely the 2020 Land Rover Discovery is the way to go.

The 2020 Land Rover Discovery is available in four main trim configurations and two powertrain options. The Discovery can be an ideal choice for one looking for unmatched off-road capability and decent performance in the premium SUV segment. Many premium competitors like the newly introduced 2020 Cadillac XT6, 2020 Acura MDX and 2020 BMW X5 offer good competition but cannot beat the Discovery at its off-road prowess

2020 Land Rover Discovery for sale

The 2020 Land Rover Discovery can be financed at a low APR of 4.06% for a term varying from 24 months to 72 months. Similarly, the top of the line HSE Luxury model can be leased for $1,089 per month for a term of 36 months and about $3,500 due at signing the lease agreement. The annual mileage is limited to 10,000 miles.

Buying Advice

We would recommend the newly introduced Landmark trim for its multiple features like sport style bumper, 20-inch black alloy wheels, power sunroof, premium tail lights, heated first and second row seats, heated steering wheel and metallic trim. Although the Landmark trim is offered with a 3.0-liter gasoline engine engine, we think you won’t miss the diesel counterpart, owing to better towing capacity and acceleration.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The starting price of the 2020 Land Rover Discovery is $52,300 and goes up to $69,200 for the HSE Luxury trim with diesel engine. An additional $1,350 is levied as destination charges over the base price of all the trims. With a choice of two powertrain options, Land Rover has catered well to performance-oriented and economy oriented customers. In the J.D Power consumer rating, the 2020 Discovery scored 73/100 including 72 points for reliability and 72 points for its driving experience, which can be considered as average

Land Rovers are not always pocket-friendly when it comes to maintenance, insurance, fuel cost and depreciation. Based on an estimation and average driving, the 2020 Discovery SE will depreciate by $33,426, while the insurance and fuel will cost you $10,365 and $14,322 respectively. The maintenance activities will cost you around $5,485. The estimated costs are for five years of ownership and are bound to increase with higher trim levels.

Features
8.0/10

The 2020 Land Rover Discovery is offered in four main trim configurations: SE, Landmark Edition, HSE, and HSE Luxury. Except the Landmark trim, all the trims are offered in both the gas and diesel powertrains. We believe that the diesel powertrain is for those looking for good fuel economy and good range. Else, the supercharged V6 offers more performance, refinement and towing capacity. The price for the above-mentioned trims are $52,300, $58,500, $59,700 and $67,200 respectively. The diesel engine upgrade will cost you additional $2000.

Even the base S trim, some features like 19-inch alloy wheels, black grille, LED headlights, heated power-folding side mirrors, ambient lighting, 10.2-inch touchscreen display running on InControl Touch Pro interface, and dual-zone climate control system as standard. The Landmark trim adds 20-inch black alloy wheels, power sunroof, premium tail lights, heated first and second row seats, heated steering wheel and metallic trim for more elegance.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2020 Land Rover Discovery lets you choose between fuel efficiency and power. The EPA-estimated fuel-efficiency of the supercharged gas engine is 16 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway and 18 mpg in combined driving conditions. Similarly, the diesel engine is rated at 21/26/23 MPG for city/highway/combined driving. With a fuel tank capacity of 23.5 gallons, the combined range for both engines is 423 miles and 517 miles respectively.

The 2020 Discovery is the least fuel-efficient and BMW X5 is the most fuel-efficient SUV. The Discovery also delivers the least range despite having the largest fuel tank of the lot. One of the reasons behind the low fuel economy has to be the supercharger which draws some power from the engine, providing lag-free performance. The Cadillac XT6 is also less efficient but benefits from a reasonably sized fuel tank and delivers better range than the more efficient MDX.

Interior
8.8/10

The cushy seats remain supportive after hours of driving, and there’s plenty of space throughout the cabin- cars.usnews.com

The interior of the 2020 Discovery encapsulates the elegance and comfort of Range Rover vehicles, without compromising much on space. Available in five-seater and seven-seater configuration, the Discovery is accommodating. With the seven-seater package, you get access to air suspension as well which adds to comfort and eases out undulations quite well. Outside visibility is good and even average-sized adults can fit in the third row with relative ease.

The higher trims get Windsor leather and the HSE can also upgrade to Windsor leather for $1,245. There are lots of color schemes and veneer options to choose and customize from. It has a desirable and premium interior. The cargo capacity behind the third-row of seats is a mere 10.1 cu-ft but the same can be folded and the cargo space extends to 41.3 cu-ft. When the second-row seats are folded, the cargo capacity increases to 83.7 cu-ft

The Acura MDX has the most cramped third row and the Cadillac XT6 is also not comfortable with respect to third-row. The Bimmer does not come with a third row, and the Discovery offers better third-row spacing. However, Discovery also has the worst cargo capacity with all the rows up. However, the BMW X5 boasts the largest cargo room and spacious first row amongst the competition. The MDX's cramped third-row is compenssated by better cargo capacity.

Every 2020 Discovery model is equipped with a 10.2-inch infotainment display with InControl Touch Pro interface with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The higher trim levels come with a built-in navigation system and WiFi hotspot capability. Customers can opt for a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and head-up display. Land Rover also offers an optional 8.0–inch rear entertainment system with dual screens on front seat backs along with wireless earphones. In the lower trims, the 10-speaker Land Rover Enhanced Sound System is standard; while on the Landmark trim onwards, you are greeted with a 10-speaker Meridian sound system. The HSE Luxury trim adds a 15-speaker Meridian premium sound system.

Some key interior features are:

  • 10.2” Touch Pro infotainment system
  • Windsor leather upholstery
  • Heated leather steering wheel
  • Four-zone automatic climate control
  • Front seat memory and lumbar support
  • Aluminum/wood inlays

Exterior
8.8/10

The 2020 Discovery features a modern and more contemporary styling despite being boxy. Land Rover added Eiger Gray and Portofino Blue to the already extensive color palette. The front fascia houses the two headlights that will remind you of a Range Rover. The grille is small but adds to the style. The bumper is long and on higher trims, you get front fog lamps too. From the side, the Discovery looks sleek but ready for business. An elevated ground clearance clears its way to ride on rough terrains.

The rear end features LED taillights and a large rear bumper, along with the “Discovery” badge in stylish capital fonts. The higher trims are equipped with rear fog lights too. The base trim rides on 19” wheels, while the others ride on 20”. The Landmark trim has specific “Landmark” badging and it rides on 21” wheels. The luxurious off-roader surely has a charm of its own, and it looks to have taken a page from Range Rover’s book.

The X5 has the longest wheelbase, while the MDX has the shortest. However, the XT6 is the longest while the Discovery is the tallest. All the SUVs have their own distinct style and every one are different from each other. Nonetheless, the dimensions of the Discovery are well-balanced with a boxy design and Land Rover's signature styling. A high ground clearance makes Discovery off-road compatible.

Some key exterior features include:

  • Single stainless-steel exhaust
  • 20” 10 split-spoke wheels
  • Power w/ tilt down heated auto-dimming side mirrors
  • LED headlights
  • LED taillights
  • Front and rear fog lamps

Safety
8.0/10

The Land Rover Discovery has not been subjected to safety tests either by NHTSA or IIHS. However, Euro NCAP has given it a 5-star safety rating. It comes with a long list of standard safety and driver assistance features like automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, rear and side cross traffic alert, automatic high beams and blind spot monitoring with corrective steering.

Some of the key safety features are:

  • Terrain response ESC and roll stability control
  • InControl Protect Emergency SOS
  • Park assist automated parking sensors
  • Blindspot assist
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Front collision mitigation
  • High speed intelligent emergency braking and reverse traffic detection
  • Back-up camera
  • Dual-stage airbags

Competition
9.0/10

2020 Land Rover Discovery vs 2020 Cadillac XT6

The XT6 is a luxurious offering from the luxury American brand and it gives the Discovery a run for its money. The Cadillac XT6 is meant to be a city and highway cruiser and not necessarily an off-roader. The Discovery, on the other hand, shines both on-road and off-road. Performance is identical but the XT6 handles better and also offers better fuel economy.

The Cadillac also offers less third row legroom as compared to the Discovery and its ground clearance is not recommended for off-road usage. On the other hand, the Discovery is more powerful and ready for off-road adventures with higher ground clearance, better water-fording capacity and 4WD as standard.

2020 Land Rover Discovery vs 2020 Acura MDX

The 2020 Acura MDX is definitely a handsome SUV in its segment. It is faster than Discovery and it can be used for mild off-roading too; but not on the same level as the Discovery. The MDX has a cramped third row, but it offers more cargo storage than the Discovery.

Despite being less powerful than the Discovery, the MDX offers similar accelaration and is more fuel efficient with a larger engine. In terms of handling, the MDX is much better and manuevarable than the Discovery. The stylish Acura is less expensive than the rugged Land Rover.

2020 Land Rover Discovery vs 2020 BMW X5

The BMW X5 is more expensive than the Discovery. However, it also brings better fuel economy and performance. The X5 is not a three-row seater, but it does have a much sportier appeal to it. The X5 gravitates more towards the road and shows off its finesse with athletic handling and a luxurious interior.

The Discovery is a more compatible off-roader and offers accomodation for up to seven passengers. The water-fording capacity of Discovery is more than the Bimmer and despite its front-heavy handling, the Discovery can be considered as a versatile SUV.

Final Verdict

The Land Rover Discovery is surely a versatile vehicle from the Bristish marque with multiple standard features. With two engines on offer, it caters to a wider audience. It also has the option to rack up the third row, if need be. It is not sporty or athletic but is a terrific off-roader. Anyone who wants to wallow in luxury while traversing the uncharted territory should seriously consider this one. To be honest, the 2020 Land Rover Discovery is safe, beautiful, and opulent but its laggy infotainment system, lower fuel economy and lesser cargo capacity with three-rows are its flaws.
