Overview

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque comes completely redesigned this year though changes are barely noticeable to regular eyes. Starting at just $42,650, it offers a turbocharged engine that can be upgraded to a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup in the R-Dynamic trims. Both the engines are mated to a ZF-sourced nine-speed gearbox and are powerful enough to motivate this subcompact SUV with ease.

Like the rest of the Land Rover lineup, the Evoque shares the Land Rover's invincible off-road capabilities, a plush cabin, and sleek exterior styling. It can carry four passengers in comfort although seating for five is what the company claims. Evoque's rivals are priced similar to it and they offer everything that Evoque does except that none can match its off-road capabilities.

Buying Advice

Since the Land Rover is generous enough to offer all the higher trim features as an optional extra on the lower trims we suggest picking the base trim. As per your need and requirement, you can add the available features.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque impresses on various aspects. First and foremost is the way it looks. Even in a sub-compact proportion, it still flaunts the bold and masculine curves and edges of the larger Range Rover. Unlike the gentle crossover-like stance of its rivals, like the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Audi Q5, and the BMW X3, the Evoque looks very capable and sturdy.

Talking about capability, it's a Range Rover after all and it does possess the offroading proficiency of its larger sibling. Apart from the looks and skillfulness, the Evoque features robust powertrain options and excellent handling, making it fun to drive and maneuverable around city traffic. Lying in the luxury category, it does have a premium interior layout and build quality. Thus the 2020 Evoque barely misses out on anything at the given price point.

Features
8.0/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque features in the subcompact SUV segment with six trims on offer namely S, SE, R-Dynamic S, R-Dynamic SE, R-Dynamic HSE, and First Edition. The price on this one starts at $42,650 and goes up to $56,850 for the top-most First Edition trim. There is one engine as standard a turbo-four which comes with a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup extra on all the R-Dynamic trims. As for the standard features they are listed in the table below while most of the features found on higher trims can be added as an optional extra on the lower trims. A couple of optional features worth mentioning are a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, adaptive suspension, extended leather upholstery, etc.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The 2020 Range Rover Evoque powered by the base 2.0-liter engine returns 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway while the mild-hybrid version of the same engine offers 1 mpg more in the city and 1 mpg less on the highway compared to the base engine. The 2020 Evoque gets a 17.7-gallon fuel tank which is not enough to breach the 400 miles city range or 500 miles highway range.

Looking at the table it is evident that the Evoque is the least efficient SUV among all. While the BMW X3 is the most fuel-efficient returning 5 mpg more in the city and 2 mpg more on the highway compared to the Evoque. When it comes to range from a tankful the X3 offers the best 430 miles in the city while the Q5 has the highest 518 miles of range on the highway.

Interior
6.0/10

Cramped inside, moderate cargo space and pricey compared to other SUVs of roughly similar capabilities, few are as stylish as the Evoque but many deliver much more function for the money - Kellybluebook

With the 2020 Range Rover Evoque, you won't need to forfeit a comfortable cabin to have a competent 4WD vehicle. Grained leather seats, soft-touch doors and trim, and brush aluminum are among its highlights. Inside, the Evoque has a swanky and well-laid interior which is much inspired by Discovery while the infotainment setup has been lifted from the Velar. The front leather seats are comfortable with ample bolstering, it is power-adjustable, and comes with a heated and ventilated function to make for a comfortable traveling experience.

Rear seating quarters are cramped, though that's common for a compact crossover. Although ingress and egress at the rear are easy due to the rear wheels being pushed back in the rear bumper. Six-footers seating back to back will have snug legroom and the headroom will be tight but for people lower than that the space is adequate. New for the 2020 Evoque is the Land Rover's Touch Pro infotainment system that comes with a 10-inch touchscreen screen which on the higher trims gets upgraded to Touch Pro Duo and thus adds another 10-inch display for HVAC controls, heated seats, etc.

As standard, the Evoque comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, navigation, Wi-Fi hotspot, etc. The base model gets a six-speaker sound system while the higher trims come with a choice of 10- or 14-speaker Meridian sound system which is available as an optional extra on the base trim.

The four-door Evoque even though being a compact SUV offers a generous 21.5 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 50.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. The rear seats can be folded in 40/20/40-split to increase the space. For added convenience, you get a power liftgate which can be upgraded to a gesture-controlled liftgate that opens the boot lid by just waving your foot under the rear bumper.

When it comes to the cabin space the front headroom and shoulder room are snug on the Evoque and taller folks will be at ease on the likes of Audi Q5 and the BMW X3. Moving to the rear seats the major difference among the SUVs here is of the legroom on offer. The Evoque offers the least amount of rear leg space while the Audi Q5 offers the best rear legroom among all. Behind the rear seats, the BMW X3 offers the best cargo capacity of 28.7 cubic feet followed by the Q5 while the GLC-Class offers the least amount of space behind the rear seats for cargo.

"You may have to look twice to discern the difference between the 2019 and 2020 Range Rover Evoque, and given the first generation’s impressive good looks, that’s probably a good." -Kelly Blue Book

The 2020 Evoque looks very flashy and takes design cues from the bigger kin Velar. Unique colors, stylish wheels, optional two-tone paint jobs, and a long list of accessories make the Evoque highly customizable. For 2020, Land Rover claims that the Evoque has undergone a big change but sadly it isn't noticeable at the first glance except for the design of the headlights.

The front and rear fascia are inspired by Velar with chiseled side proportions and a raked roof structure. The grille has been shrunken and the air vents are enlarged. Evoque maintains a graceful appearance with a squarer front and boxier jaw that matches with premium models.

That being said, the X3 measures the longest and the tallest while the GLC-Class has the longest wheelbase among all.

Safety
9.0/10

As of this writing, neither the NHTSA nor IIHS has crash-tested the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. So you have to rely on the safety features and driver aids to gauge how safe is the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. As standard, you get a rearview camera, driver drowsiness monitor, front and rear parking sensors, pre-collision warning and automatic braking, traffic sign recognition, and a lane-keep assist while the list of available driver-assist features is lengthy. A few of them are listed below.

Safety Features:

  • Available Surround-view parking camera

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque vs 2020 Audi Q5

Starting at a slightly premium the Audi Q5 is a worthy bargain. It gets a more powerful motor that is fuel-efficient too. The cabin and cargo space in the Q5 owing to its bigger dimensions is better than the Evoque any time of the day.

But all this comes in the form of a compromise on the off-road capability which the Evoque wears as a badge of pride in the segment. So if you are looking for a luxurious off-roader go with the Evoque else Q5 is the better choice.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque vs 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

The 2020 GLC-Class is a tad bit cheaper than the Evoque but in no way it is less in terms of comfort and luxury. Rather in these two aspects, both the SUVs are equally matched. The cabin space is slightly better on the GLC-Class while it also strikes a fine balance between performance and gas mileage.

Also, the GLC-Class offers a more powerful engine option and bigger dimensions while the cargo space is better on the Evoque. Another down point for the GLC-Class is that it is a strict soft-roader, unlike the Evoque. So the Evoque might invoke an instant celebrity status but unless you frequent the trails the GLC-Class will suffice your luxury cravings.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is intended to lure younger buyers who can’t opt for a pricey Land Rover Range Rover Sport. It is stylish yet pretty capable off the beaten path, following its family tradition. With a starting price of just under $43,000, the Evoque may very well be the best-looking bargain in the Land Rover fleet.
