Overview

The 2020 Ford Ecosport sees minor changes and belongs to the first generation introduced in 2018. Ford now offers a 4G WiFi hotspot as standard, allowing the functionality of FordPass Connect. Also, the 2020 Ecosport SE model receives an 8.0-inch touchscreen as standard. The 2020 Ford Ecosport price starts at $19,995 and an additional destination fee of $1,245 is levied across all the trim levels. The base price remains the same as previous year, while the destination fee has increased for the current model.

Featuring a 4-trim lineup of EcoSport S, EcoSport SE, EcoSport Titanium and EcoSport SES, the 2020 Ford EcoSport MSRP can be an expense of $19,995-$27,380 this season. Having said that, it simply translates to the fact that the range-leader 2020 Ford EcoSport SES will cost you $7,385 more than the base S trim for enhanced specs, assets and 4WD as standard.

We Recommend

We would recommend the fully-loaded 2020 Ecosport SES trim for its list of creature comforts, driver-assistance features and AWD as standard. With an msrp of $28,625, the SES trim is quite desirable.

The 2020 Ford Ecosport is equipped with a 1.0-liter turbocharged inline-three engine with 123 horsepower as standard, while the 2.0-liter engine with 166 horsepower is optional. The 2020 Ford Ecosport fuel economy is average with the base engine with 28 mpg combined. The more powerful engine offers a gas mileage of 25 mpg combined. The Ecosport 2020 cargo capacity of 20.2 cubic feet is decent and so is the towing capacity at 2,000 pounds (2.0-liter engine). The 2020 Ford Ecosport problems are not very significant as it has been recalled only once and nine complaints have been registered with the NHTSA. The Ecosport offers better output (with 2.0-liter engine) than the Honda HR-V, higher ground clearance than the Mazda CX-3, better cargo space than the Chevrolet Trax

2020 Ford EcoSport for sale

Buying Advice

The SE Trim offers a good mix of features and performance and which is why, it is our pick.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

EcoSport highlights include its tall seating position, simple controls and steering feel, but it also has some significant negative characteristics-Cars.com

Ford has not made any extraordinary changes to the existing EcoSport trim lineup. However, a bigger infotainment touchscreen with the 2020 EcoSport SE trim and FordPass Connect with app connectivity and WiFi hotspot are standard across all the trims. The J.D Power Consumer Rating score of 79/100 can be considered as ‘Average’. The quality and reliability score of 83/100 can be termed as ‘Great’. The 2021 Ford EcoSport safety rating of four out of five stars from the NHTSA could have been better.

The estimated “Cost-to-Own” 2020 EcoSport S for a term of five years can be divided into depreciation, fuel charges, insurance, maintenance and repairs. The above-mentioned factors are calculated to be $13,958, $15,590, $6,266, $5,270 and $1,950 respectively. The ownership costs will also include taxes and financing costs. As you climb the trim ladder, the “Cost-to-Own” will also increase. We would consider the ownership costs to be similar to the competition.

Buying Advice
7.5/10

We believe that the SES trim is the best choice out of the given options. Apart from its standard AWD system, it also offers some extraordinary features such as the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear-cross traffic alert, and a lot more.

Features
5.0/10

"There are bigger and better-driving options in this class." - Car and Driver

The Ford EcoSport 2020 features are not segment-leading in any way but are decent for the asking price. The 2020 EcoSport S offers automatic on/off headlamps, hill start assist, rear view camera, 4G WiFi hotspot, remote keyless entry system, and personal safety system. The EcoSport SE adds reverse sensing system, halogen quad-beam projector headlamps, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power moonroof with sunshade, and newly added 8-inch infotainment touchscreen as standard.

The 2020 Ford EcoSport Titanium features are in addition to the SE trim features. Some of the standout features include metallic front and rear bumpers, silver painted roof rails, heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, auto-dimming rearview mirror, B&O premium sound system, and navigation system. Fuel Economy
5.0/10

"Those who believe the "Eco" in EcoSport stands for economical will be disappointed." - Car and Driver

The 2020 Ford EcoSport fuel economy of 27 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. With a combined mileage of 28 MPG, the EcoSport lines up with the segment standards, if not better. However, this gas mileage is offered only with the 1.0L engine. The Ford EcoSport mpg 2020 with a 2.0 L engine is 23/29/25 mpg in city/highway/combined conditions. With a gas tank size of 13.8 gallons and standard engine, the EcoSport 2020 offers a combined driving range of 386.4 miles.

The Mazda CX-3, with an overall mileage of 32 mpg, emerges as the crown-bearer in this regard. Considering the overall fuel economy figures, the other three contenders line up head to head. The EcoSport, however, guzzles more fuel than the rest in terms of combined fuel economy. The Honda HR-V and Chevrolet Trax offer 2 mpg better combined mpg than the Ford EcoSport.

Interior
4.0/10

"We love the big cargo area and configurable load floor"  -kbb.com

The Ford EcoSport interior 2020 seems inspired from other Ford cars. While it may not be new scenery for you, the SES trim brings along a special treatment to the same. With some copper-colored inserts on the dashboard, it screams exclusivity as even the top-trim "Titanium" doesn't get that privilege. Having said that, the rest of the interiors including the infotainment remains pretty familiar to its siblings. The front seats have been given a premium treatment as they are wrapped in premium leather and also feature heating functions. The driver seat also flaunts 6-way power-adjustable seats that further help in finding an optimal driving position for you.

The front passenger seat isn't behind either, it flaunts 4-way power adjustability as well. There is loads of room all around and you won't mind spending hours on these seats. The extension of the center console in the middle could get troublesome for the middle passenger at the rear. There is loads of room here too and the large windows also help in imparting an airy feel to the cabin. There is also an optional moonroof on offer, making the cabin feel airy. The 2020 Ford EcoSport cargo volume of 20.9 cu-ft is decent and it can be extended to 50 cu-ft by folding the rear 60/40 flip-up and split-fold-flat rear seats.

In terms of passenger volume, the Ford EcoSport is not really the best here, in fact, it could only manage to defeat the Mazda CX-3 in this comparison. It's the Honda HR-V that overshadows everyone in terms of the space inside the cabin, by miles. The second to it is the Chevrolet Trax with its 93.0 cu.ft of passenger volume that earns it the second position. The Honda HR-V offers 2.3 cubic feet more space than Ford EcoSport. The Chevrolet Trax and Mazda CX-3 offers 2.2- and 3.1 cubic feet less cargo capacity than the EcoSport.

Once you enter into the 2020 EcoSport, you’ll notice a floating display panel comprising of 8-inch touchscreen that engages Ford’s latest SYNC 3 multimedia system. This feature is standard on the Titanium and SES models. The lower trims get either a 4.2-inch panel or 8-inch touchscreen mounted on the dashboard with SYNC 3 as an option. The B&O Play is standard on the Titanium trim, a 675-watt premium audio system, including 10 speakers and a subwoofer. Some other features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and SiriusXM are offered from SE trim onwards.

Some of the key interior features of the 2020 Ford EcoSport are:

  • Heated front seats
  • 6-way powered driver's seat and 4-way powered front passenger's seat
  • Voice control with Amazon Alexa
  • Available power moonroof with sunshade
  • Eight cup-holders
  • Heated leather-wrapped steering wheel with chrome inserts
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility
  • 675-watt B&O Play audio system with 10 speakers
  • 8” Touchscreen System with Navigation
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Sirius XM satellite radio

Exterior

The EcoSport wears hatchback duds and lifts them to almost cartoonish SUV heights-Thecarconnection.com

The 2020 Ford EcoSport features modern exterior design. The front grille has been moved up enhancing the overall looks than before. Ford’s iconic blue oval is located in the center now. The headlamp unit comprises projector beams and redesigned LED daytime running lights. The big and round fog lamps now add more visual mass. Overall, the new EcoSport gets a more SUV stance. Moving to the rear, you will notice spare wheels still mounted on the tailgate.

Ford believes that consumers like the placement of the spare wheel on the rear gate as it adds to the rugged looks of the SUV. There is not much change in the rear and it looks very similar to its predecessor. The Ecosport comes with wheels made up of complete Aluminum that provide ultimate traction along with narrow corners. The upper trims also offer 18-inch wheels that are good for highway driving. The 2020 Ford EcoSport exterior colors like Diamond White, Lightning Blue Metallic, Moondust Silver Metallic, Race Eed, Shadow Black, and Smoke Metallic.

Despite being the smallest vehicle of the lot, the Ecosport manages to keep up with the segment in terms of wheelbase, translating to a more spacious cabin than expected. However, it is still overshadowed by its rivals which offer more wheelbase. The largest vehicle of the lot, the Honda HR-V, yet again wins this competition, hands down. It is then closely followed by the Mazda CX-3 leaving the Chevy Trax for the third position.

Some of the key exterior features of the 2020 Ford Ecosport are:

  • Halogen Quad-Beam Projector Headlights with LED Signature Lighting
  • Rain-Sensing Wipers
  • Fog Lights

Safety
4.0/10

"The EcoSport received a four-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration out of a possible five stars." - Car and Driver

The Safety rating of the 2020 Ford Ecosport

As an improvement over last year, the 2020 Ecosport comes with a lot more features as compared to the 2018 version. The competition offers a bit more standard safety features and we expect Ford to follow the same lines. However, when it comes to building quality, the 2020 Ecosport has been awarded "4 stars" by NHTSA in the crash tests. Ford's very own Co-Pilot360 driver-assistance safety suite is standard from the base S trim with features like rear view camera, hill start assist and automatic on/off headlamps. The SE trim adds reverse sensing system. The 2020 Ford EcoSport SES and Titanium trims add blind-spot information system with rear-cross traffic alert and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Some of the key safety features of the 2020 Ford EcoSport are:

  • Driver and Front Passenger Airbags
  • Driver and Front Passenger Knee Airbags
  • Front and Second Row side airbags
  • Side curtain airbags
  • Emergency brake assist system
  • LATCH in rear seats
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring system
  • Remote Keyless Entry with Ford MyKey

Competition
7.0/10

2020 Ford Ecosport vs. 2020 Honda HR-V

It all depends on your own personal preference when it comes to choosing between the 2020 Ford Ecosport and the 2020 Honda HR-V. The Honda leads the pack when it comes to offering the most space on the inside for passengers and also beats the Ecosport in terms of fuel economy. The Ecosport, on the other hand, is technologically far more superior, when compared to Honda and offers much better performance. So if you want a family hauler, the Honda should be your choice. For everything else, it’s the Ecosport.

2020 Ford Ecosport vs. 2020 Chevrolet Trax

The Chevy Trax comes out on top in this head-to-head comparison with the Ford EcoSport. Though it may be costlier than the EcoSport, the 2020 Trax justifies its ratings through a more spacious interior, high-tech features, and better power figures. The Ecosport is not that bad though. It looks sportier than the Trax and has a far better infotainment system than the Chevy. However, both these vehicles share too many similarities, but EcoSport adds some little extra touches that make the driving experience more dynamic and enjoyable.

2020 Ford Ecosport vs.2020 Mazda CX-3

The Mazda CX-3 has been one of the most popular cars in the segment, courtesy of its powerful and fuel-efficient motor, coupled with superb driving dynamics. The CX-3 manages to offer a higher sense of space on the inside when compared to the Ecosport and also surpasses it when it comes to performance. It is also less expensive than the latter. The Ford, on the other hand, offers a far superior experience on the infotainment front and feels a lot more upmarket, in terms of the design.

Final Verdict

Riding on the success of the Ecosport in the developing markets, Ford decided to replicate the same in the US as well. The Ecosport does compromise on the quality of the interiors but in terms of the space, it is at par and better than some of its rivals. In terms of look as well, the Ecosport feels like a big SUV rather than a compact one. So, if you are in the market to not shell out a lot of money for a vehicle that can take you off-road, has a superb infotainment system, and sporty ride, the Ford Ecosport is the one to go for.
