Overview

The 2019 Ford EcoSport comes with minor changes and belongs to the first generation EcoSport introduced just last year. The 2019 Ford EcoSport price starts at $19,995 and an additional destination fee of $1,095 is levied across all the trim levels. Ford has introduced the SES Black Appearance Package for a dual tone and blacked-out exterior appearance. The FordPass Connect has replaced the SYNC Connect System for the 4G LTE WiFi hotspot.

Featuring a 4-trim lineup of EcoSport S, EcoSport SE, EcoSport Titanium and EcoSport SES, the 2019 Ford EcoSport MSRP can be an expense of $19,995-$23,150 this season. Having said that, it simply translates to the fact that the range-leader 2019 Ford EcoSport SES will cost you $7,280 more than the base S trim for enhanced specs and assets

We Recommend

Looking at the spec sheet and an msrp of $24,245, the 2019 EcoSport SE trim would be our choice. It offers a decent value for the asking price.

The 2019 Ford EcoSport gets a 1.0-liter turbo engine with 123 horsepower as standard. While the bigger 2.0 liter inline-four with 166 horsepower is available. The 2019 Ford EcoSport towing capacity is 2,000 pounds with the bigger engine. With an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 28 mpg and 25 mpg combined with the standard and the optional engines respectively, the 2019 Ford EcoSport mpg ratings are lower as compared to rivals like Hyundai Kona. The Ford EcoSport 2019 interior is decent for its dimensions and a cargo capacity of 20.9 cubic feet makes it practical.  The EcoSport is cheaper than the Honda HR-V, offers better cargo space than the Mazda CX-3 and higher ground clearance than the Chevrolet Trax

For budget-oriented buyers, the used 2019 Ford EcoSport can be availed of with a base price of $6,995. Going for older model years like the 2018 Ford EcoSport could be a matter of $8,795 and the and the 2020 Ford EcoSport can cost as much as $4,995 along with a listing of 5,331 in total.

Buying Advice

Our selection of the lot is the SE trim. It covers a lot more features and adds on heated front seats, a 6.5-inch touch screen system along with Ford’s SYNC-3 System, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a Power Moonroof, rear parking sensor, and automatic climate control. We recommend upgrading to the AWD variant for an extra $1500, which also upgrades the powertrain to a more powerful 2.0L engine. Finally, adding certain safety features such as blind-spot monitoring would be a good bargain.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The subcompact SUV class has added numerous entrants recently, so it's worth your while to check out the competition to find the one that's right for you- Cars.com

Introduced just last, the EcoSport remains the most affordable SUV of the Ford stable. For the 2019 model year, Ford offers SES appearance package and improved FordPass Connect for WiFi hotspot. The J.D. Power Consumer Rating score is not available for the 2019 Ecosport but considering no major changes, the 2018 EcoSport’s score of 76/100 can be taken into consideration. With one recall and 20 complaints, the 2019 EcoSport problems are not worrisome.

The estimated “Cost-to-Own” 2019 EcoSport S for a term of five years can mainly be classified into depreciation, fuel charges, insurance, maintenance and repairs. The above-mentioned factors are calculated to be $12,265, $15,620, $6,250, $6,370 and $2,465 respectively. The ownership costs will also include taxes and financing costs. As you climb the trim ladder, the “Cost-to-Own” will also increase.

Features
5.0/10

The 2019 EcoSport carries over mostly unchanged. The lineup still includes four trim levels and the same set of engine and transmission combinations- Car and Driver

The 2019 Ford EcoSport features are spread across four trims, namely the S, SE, SES, and the Titanium trim. Ford provides two powertrain options and two drivetrain options available as well. The FWD comes standard on all trims. The SES is the only trim with AWD and 2.0L engine as standard. On all other trims, AWD is available as an option. The base S trims skimp on a lot of luxuries and cover your basic necessities like quad-beam reflector headlamps, cloth upholstery, a 4.2-inch touchscreen, USB ports, and Bluetooth.

The 2019 EcoSport SE trim adds a bit more functional features and additions to the car in the form of a bigger 6.5-inch touch screen, heated front row seats, fog lamps, reverse sensing system, power moonroof, and automatic climate control. Lastly, both the Titanium and SES trims share similar features such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, leather-trimmed seats, an 8-inch touch screen system, and a 10-speaker stereo system. Ford offers Mykey feature for safe driving as standard on all trims.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

Fuel economy is just so-so, and acceleration doesn't reach the modest bar set by the rest of the class- Edmunds

The Ford EcoSport 2019 mileage figures are average, even with a low-powered engine. The 2019 EcoSport mpg ratings are 27 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highway, and 28 MPG combined. The fuel economy drops even further with AWD and the larger inline-4 engine, with EPA ratings of 23/29/25 MPG for city/highway/combined driving cycles respectively. With a gas tank size of 13.8 gallons, the EcoSport 2019 (1.0-liter inline-3) delivers a combined driving range of up to 386 miles on a full tank of gas.

The 2019 Ford EcoSport plainly lags behind, with the Mazda CX-3 taking first place in fuel economy. The Honda HR-V comes a close second with 2 mpg (combined) more than the EcoSport and 1 mpg less than the Mazda CX-3. The Chevrolet Trax, on the other hand, is midway between the Honda HR-V and the Ford EcoSport in terms of fuel economy, but it has by far the largest fuel tank, offering nearly the same combined driving range as the Mazda CX-3. The Honda HR-V offers the maximum driving range, while the Ford EcoSport offers the lowest range.

Interior
4.0/10

The EcoSport interior is functional instead of fashionable, which we can appreciate on the cheaper models- Car and Driver

The 2019 EcoSport interior has been created with adaptability in mind, with many nooks, storage bins, and hooks strewn over the cabin. The 2019 EcoSport's dash is somewhat uneven but the numerous trim pieces, cut lines, and dash materials don't translate well here. Most of the plastic surfaces seemed harsh and hollow, including the leather-wrapped steering wheel. On the base trim, the seats are covered with cloth upholstery in Ebony and Medium Stone colors. However, exclusive leather and fabric seats in Ebony and Medium Light Stone colors, as well as copper-colored trim pieces, are included in the higher trims. Unfortunately, even on the top trim, the cabin quality is subpar.

The front seats are spacious and comfy. The back seats have enough headroom but limited legroom. While the driver sits in a high seat, the EcoSport's substantial window pillars limit the front view. The standard features given on the base trims are a 4-way manual adjustment for the driver seat, manual tilt, and telescopic steering wheel, day and night rear-view mirror, cargo cover, driver side one-touch power window, Illuminated Entry System with the theater-dimming feature, two 12-volt power outlets, 8 cup holders, and Illuminated vanity mirrors. Heated seats and steering wheel are reserved for the higher trims. The 2019 Ford EcoSport cargo space of 20.9 cubic feet can be extended to 50 cubic feet.

The 2019 EcoSport compensated for the lack of headroom in the front row by providing ample legroom and comparable space in the second seat. However, in spite of having a shorter wheelbase than the Mazda CX-3, EcoSport has better interior space. The Honda HR-V bags the title of being the roomiest SUV in the segment which also has the biggest cargo space of all. That said, EcoSport also has a good cargo capacity, placing second only to Honda's 24.3 cubic feet. The Mazda CX-3, on the other hand, has a small cargo area with only 12.4 cubic feet of space.

The SYNC3 infotainment system is better than the SYNC system offered on the base trim. The system is quite user-friendly and simple to operate. Navigating between menus is simple, albeit reaching for the control knobs can be difficult due to their location on the dash. The SYNC 3 Ford covers pretty much everything by including a bigger touchscreen display, Android Auto and Apple Carplay, SiriusXM, and hotspot. On the base trim, you get a small standard SYNC 4.2-inch screen with Bluetooth connectivity. The base trim comes with a 6-speaker stereo system; upgrade to higher trims for a 7-speaker stereo system; and as an available, a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo system sounds great.

Some of the standout interior features of the 2019 EcoSport are:

  • Heated leather front seats (available)
  • Heated Front Seats
  • Remote start (optional)
  • 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat (available)
  • Leather Wrapped heated Steering Wheel (available)
  • Android Auto and Apple Carplay (available)
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio and Navigation (available)
  • SYNC3 8.0-inch touchscreen (available)
  • 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system (available)
  • Voice recognition
  • FordPass Connect 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot

Exterior
5.9/10

A short wheelbase makes for sharp handling that would benefit from better tires, but there's no helping the underpowered engine- Edmunds

The 2019 Ford EcoSport has a bit of visual overhaul. The front black grille with Active Grille Shutters has been expanded and raised and the headlamp unit now has revised LED DRLs and projector beams. Ford's iconic big blue logo can be seen on the center now. The vehicle's aesthetic has evolved into a culmination of attempting to maintain the previous appearance while blending it with the new design to give it an affluent vibe. The side profile provides a big bolder look and the roof rails can’t go unnoticed. With no spare wheel mounted on the rear tailgate starting this year, the EcoSport does lose some of its rugged appeal.

Other than that, the rear tail lamps look pretty much the same borrowing from its last year’s model. The outside power mirror has the integrated blind spot feature. EcoSport S runs on the 16-inch alloy wheels and 17-inch wheels are given on upper trims. The base trim also comes with an acoustic-laminated windscreen, swing gate rear hatch, and front and rear tow hooks. The 2019 Ford EcoSport exterior color options include Lightning Blue, Race Red, Diamond White, Moondust Silver, Smoke, Shadow Black, Canyon Ridge, Ruby Red, and Blue Candy Metallic Tinted Clearcoat.

The Honda HR-V comes out as the longest SUV with the highest ground clearance. The EcoSport follows it with just 0.3 inch of less clearance. The Mazda CX-3 is the lightest SUV in the competition which will give a performance advantage and with the shortest wheelbase EcoSport will allow easier parking. That said, despite its distinctive look, the EcoSport manages to have a greater presence on the road than its opponent. Both the Honda HR-V and the Chevrolet Trax may appear to be archaic in comparison to the EcoSport, but one could argue that the Mazda CX-3 is the most stylish of the bunch.

Some of the standout exterior features of the 2019 EcoSport are:

  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • 17-inch alloy wheels (available)
  • Front and rear molded splash guards (optional)
  • Keyless-entry keypad (optional)
  • Halogen Quad-Beam Projector Headlights with LED Signature Lighting
  • Black Chrome Grille
  • Black/Silver Roof Rails (available)
  • Front and rear tow hooks
  • Power moonroof (from SE trim onwards)

Safety
8.0/10

The Ford EcoSport received an overall four-star rating from the NHTSA. The 2019 EcoSport has not been tested by the IIHS. Coming to the safety features, EcoSport holds no ground against the competitors. standard safety features on the car include ABS and traction control, 8 airbags, and an emergency brake assist system. On higher trims advanced features such as blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert are available.

Some of the standout safety features of the 2019 EcoSport are:

  • SecuriLock Passive Anti-Theft System
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring (available)
  • Rear-Cross Traffic Alert (available)
  • Brake Assist
  • Cruise control
  • Rearview camera
  • Mykey system

Competition
8.0/10

2019 Ford EcoSport vs. 2019 Chevrolet Trax

The Chevrolet Trax becomes a superior choice to the customers, thanks to its better driving dynamics, performance, and combined fuel economy. The EcoSport might have a better infotainment system compared to the Trax, however, given the similarities between the car, the Trax has an edge, as it has been tested by the IIHS and received decent ratings.

2019 Ford EcoSport vs. 2019 Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V is a better car if you want more interior room and to save money on gas. The 2019 HR-V has a class-leading fuel economy, making it a better choice for frequent travelers; but, the EcoSport is significantly superior in terms of accessible tech features. But when it comes to safety, HR-V has been awarded the ‘top safety pick’ title by the IIHS which along with more safety features, pulls odds in its favor.

2019 Ford EcoSport vs. 2019 Mazda CX-3

The Mazda CX-3 is thought to be the best in the segment, thanks to its smooth motor and great handling. It also gets better gas mileage and it is quick on the road. EcoSport tries its best to fight with a more spacious cabin, bigger cargo space, higher ground clearance but CX-3 tries to compensate for its crampy cabin disadvantage with impressive safety ratings and less braking distance.

Final Verdict
7.3/10

The 2019 EcoSport's tiny dimensions make it simpler to live within cities, as does its excellent infotainment system and affordable pricing. However, if we consider safety features, performance, and fuel economy, rivals have the upper hand. If these are factors you can overlook, the Ford EcoSport appears to be a viable choice in a subcompact SUV but if you don’t have a brand preference then Honda HR-V or CX-3 will fit your needs better.
