Overview

The Nissan Kicks was introduced just last year and nothing much has changed for the 2019 model year. The three trim configurations continue to be S, SV and SR. With a starting price of $18,640, the 2019 Kicks is one of the cheapest subcompact crossovers in the segment. Powered by a 1.6-liter inline-four cylinder engine, Nissan’s cheapest SUV offers 122 horsepower and FWD drivetrain across all the trim levels. The Kicks 2019 offers very good fuel economy, specifications and features for its asking price.

2019 Nissan Kicks Buying Advice

The 2019 Nissan Kicks was launched in 2018 and has not changed even a bit.It offers a good features to price ratio and would be an easier car to own. With just 1 recall and 33 complaints, the Nissan Kicks seems to be a car that can cause very fewer issues and in terms of reliability. However, it did receive an updated styling, additional safety features, and upgraded infotainment system for the 2021 model year. So, buying the 2021 and above models makes more sense.

The 2019 Nissan Kicks is powered by a 1.6-liter inline-four engine with 122 hp. The performance is far from exciting on highways as it lacks grunt. Even the CVT does not offer seamless transition everytime. However, it does offer many benefits in terms of superior gas mileage, maneuverability and class-leading cargo space. The subcompact crossover from Nissan challenges the likes of Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-3

2019 Nissan Kicks for sale

The 2019 Nissan Kicks aims to offer maximum standard features, practicality, interior space and decent fuel economy without breaking the bank. Even the top model Kicks SR started at an MSRP of just $20,970, making it a pretty attractive deal. Looking for a used 2019 Nissan Kicks can be a good idea, if you are into used subcompact crossover cars. Nissan’s subcompact vehicle offers a decent set of safety features as well and even build quality is pretty good. It replaced the Nissan Juke and can be considered as a worthy successor.

Buying Advice

Nissan has priced its subcompact SUV very aggressively and we don’t have any complaints with respect to the list of features it offers. The mid-level SV trim is just $1,710 more than the base S trim and offers 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, 7-inch touchscreen display with NissanConnect features, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, automatic temperature control, rear cross traffic alert, remote start engine system and many more features. So, it is a more viable option for most buyers. If you wish to splurge more, then go for the SR trim that offers all the bells and whistles.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2019 Nissan Kicks can be an ideal option in the subcompact crossover segment. However, its lackluster performance can hamper many from buying one. The Nissan Kicks 2019 comes with lower fuel consumption, practicality and affordability. Even the consumer reviews are pretty positive and the Kicks scored 83 out of 100 in the J.D Power Consumer Rating, which can be considered as “Great”. The quality and reliability score of 81 out of 100 can be considered as “Great” as well.

The Kicks 2019 scored 86/100 and 81/100 for the driving experience and resale, which again is “Great”. The cost-to-own 2019 Kicks for a term of five years is estimated and calculated for depreciation, fuel charges, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. The depreciation is estimated to be $12,080. The charges for fuel, insurance, maintenance and repairs are estimated to be $9,320, $5,160, $6,050 and $1,700 respectively. Overall, it can be considered as affordable to own.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The Kicks has earned excellent EPA fuel-economy ratings- Car and Driver

The 2019 Nissan Kicks offer an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 31/33/36 mpg in the city/highway/combined conditions. With a maximum fuel tank capacity of 10.8 gallons, the Kicks 2019 can offer a maximum driving range 335 miles, 389 miles and 370 miles respectively. The range is on the lower side, considering the smaller size of the fuel tank. In times of rising gas prices, the Nissan Kicks can be a smart choice.

The Nissan Kicks offers the best gas mileage in the class, however, its range is on the lower side because of a fuel smaller tank. The Honda HR-V offers the best range due to its bigger tank. The Mazda CX-3 follows Nissan Kicks with a combined mileage of 31 mpg. The Honda HR-V and Hyundai Kona offer the least economy at 30 mpg combined.

Interior
6.2/10

The Kicks also excels at using its interior space efficiently. It’s not a large vehicle, but you could be excused for thinking it is when you get inside- Cars.com

The interior of the 2019 Nissan Kicks is more functional than being fancy. However, the exterior aesthetics don’t go with the subtle inside design. The dashboard is well-laid and most functions are placed ergonomically. However, owing to lower pricing, some compromises have been made but it's not worrisome in any way. The front seats are comfortable and are inspired by the "Zero Gravity" structure which makes short drives and day-to-day errands a truly comfortable proposition. The outward visibility is decent and nobody will have any complaints with it.

The rear seats are comfortable as well and offer good support. However, it is best suitable for two full-size adults or three average-sized kids. The three trims get Charcoal Cloth upholstery with contrast stitching. The top-level SR trim gets access to orange-colored contrast stitching on the seats and dashboard. With Nissan Kicks Color Studio, buyers can choose from multiple accents and finishes for the interior and exterior to make their car distinct. The accents can be seen around air vents, around mirrors, floor mats and contrast stitching.

Nissan’s subcompact crossover offers a decent cargo capacity of 25.3 cubic feet with all seats in place. By folding the rear 60/40-split seat back, the trunk space can be extended to 32.3 cubic feet. Some convenience features like rear passenger under-seat heater ducts, automatic temperature control, rear door alert, intelligent key, remote engine start system and cargo cover are offered with SV and SR trims. For storage, four cup holders, four bottle holders, and four cargo tie-down hooks are offered.

Exterior
5.0/10

The Juke was expensive and not very practical, not to mention far from a best-seller. So when Nissan went back to the drawing board to come up with a replacement, it went in a very different direction- Cars.com

In terms of looks, the 2019 Kicks has a youthful design that looks appealing. The V-shaped grille in between the headlamps looks catchy and gives it a subtle spice. The roof can be optioned with a two-tone color which gives a distinct look, and the 16-inch steel wheels with wheel cover that comes standard suit the overall design quite well. You get bigger 17-inch wheels on the SV and SR trims. With a low curb weight ranging from 2,639 to 2,672 pounds and high ground clearance rated at 7 inches, the Nissan Kicks is a fairly capable crossover.

Nissan offers multiple single-tone and dual-tone color options. The single tone exterior color options are Aspen White, Fresh Powder, Silver Metallic, Gun Metallic, Cayenne Red, Deep Blue, and Super Black. The two-tone color options are paired with black contrasting roof and Aspen White, Monarch Orange, and Cayenne Red. The two-tone color choice also includes Orange roof paired with Gun Metallic and Fresh Powder roof paired with Deep Blue Pearl. With Nissan Kicks Color Studio buyers can customize their own car with respect to unique colors of wheel caps, inserts, mirrors, and interior vents to complement the interior.

It translates to great performance in bad road conditions and decent rear seat legroom. It also manages to perform well in rougher terrains. In terms of dimensions, the HR-V leads, which makes it the largest SUV in the competition. The Mazda CX-3 sits on a shorter base, offering enhanced agility. The Hyundai Kona is the widest in the comparison.

Some of the key exterior features of the 2019 Kicks include:

  • 17" Aluminum-alloy wheels (SV and above)
  • LED headlights with LED signature accents (SR only)
  • Fog lights
  • Body-color inserts on front and rear bumpers
  • Silver exterior door trim and roof rails

Safety
7.0/10

Nissan provides a short list of driver-assistance features, but the good news is that automated emergency braking is standard across the range- Car and Driver

The NHTSA gave the 2019 Nissan Kicks four out of five stars in overall safety ratings. Even in the rollover test it secured a four-star rating. The IIHS named the Kicks SR its Top Safety Pick thanks to the highest rating of Good in all six crashworthiness tests. However, it missed out on the Top Safety Pick + award by two tests. Nissan's standard automatic emergency braking has been rated "Superior" in the front crash prevention test while headlights gain average reviews.

Some safety features like hill start assist, ABS, EBD, smart auto headlights, rear view monitor, automatic emergency braking, vehicle dynamic control, tire pressure monitoring system and traction control system are standard. The SV and SR trims get access to blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert for improved driver assistance while driving. At this price point, the safety features are quite good and we can’t complain much on this front.

Some of the key safety features of the 2013 Kicks are:

  • Hill-start assist
  • Intelligent Emergency Braking
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Blind Spot Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Intelligent Around View Monitor
  • Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System
  • Vehicle Security System

Competition

2019 Nissan Kicks vs 2019 Honda HR-V

The Nissan Kicks is priced lower than the HR-V and is built with a spacious and practical cabin that doesn’t miss out on features. In terms of exterior, though both of them are similarly sized, Nissan offers the SUV with better ground clearance and a larger wheelbase, and it's also the lightest in the segment.

Above all, it has a highly efficient engine that can feel underpowered, but it offers exemplary mileage. While the Honda HR-V justifies itself with a comparatively better performing engine, better handling, and a wide option list with additional packages.

2019 Nissan Kicks vs. 2019 Hyundai Kona

The Hyundai Kona comes with a better engine that generates higher power figures that aid in better performance. The Kona also offers better driving dynamics, and most significantly, offers an updated design silhouette that looks the most modern in its segment. Even AWD drivetrain is available as an option

The Kicks fights back though with an engine that offers efficient mileage, spacious cabin, larger cargo space with additional storage spaces, and most importantly, affordability. With Kicks Color Studio, Nissan offers multiple customization options for the buyers which Hyundai Kona cannot offer.

2019 Nissan Kicks vs 2019 Mazda CX-3

The Mazda CX-3 comes with a larger 2L engine which churns out the best power figure out of all the rivals here, and that too without sacrificing much on efficiency. It also offers a choice between FWD and AWD with engine choices and additional packages.

While the Kicks is priced significantly lower than the CX-3 and offers slightly better fuel efficiency. If daily use is your priority, the Kicks will do just fine, but if you want your SUV to have some character and a fun-to-drive nature, the CX-3 is the way to go.

Final Verdict
5.2/10

The 2019 Nissan Kicks shines for a million reasons and justifies its presence in the sensitive SUV market. The SUV is priced very competitively compared to its rivals. The engine generates a satisfactory power that eases everyday tasks and is adequate for basic needs, and in turn, offers laudable mileage numbers. The cabin is spacious, comfortable, well-built, and most importantly, practical. The features packed are on the generous side, as the automaker offers almost every essential feature that a modern SUV should possess. Being priced below $19,000 for the base S trim, it’s a no-brainer if all you want is a no-frills daily commuter.
