Overview

The 2020 Nissan Kicks starts at an MSRP of $19,070 and is a practical option in the subcompact SUV segment. Nissan’s subcompact SUV offers multiple standard features, good specs, and practicality for an affordable price tag. The exterior dimensions might not suggest but the interior is quite spacious. Available in S, SV and SR trim configurations, nothing much has changed as compared to the previous model year. The 1.6-liter inline-four engine continues to power all the trims, offering 122 horsepower.

2020 Nissan Kicks Buying Advice

Nissan refreshed the styling of the 2021 Nissan Kicks, making it synonymous with the brand's global design language. Even the infotainment, safety, aesthetic and interior features are upgraded for a more refined user experience. The redesigned Kicks have not undergone any recalls and very few user complaints are registered with the NHTSA. The 2020 Nissan Kicks is good too but for a little more, Nissan is offering much more and in our opinion you should consider buying 2021-2022 Nissan Kicks without thinking twice.

The 2020 Nissan Kicks can be a compelling option in the subcompact SUV segment. The starting price can be the main USP of this small car. The performance from the little 1.6-liter inline-four engine might be underwhelming but the fuel consumption is also less than its rivals. With an affordable price tag, practicality and good aesthetics, the Kicks 2020 competes with the likes of Ford Ecosport, Hyundai Venue and Toyota C-HR.

2020 Nissan Kicks for sale

The 2020 Nissan Kicks has not changed much since its introduction in 2018. However, even today it is one of the most affordable, versatile, fuel efficient and spacious subcompact crossover vehicles. The financing offers include as low as 2.0-4.5% APR and $300-$400 monthly payments, depending on the term duration. Nissan’s affordable SUV can also be leased for a term duration of 36 months with an annual mileage limit of 10,000 miles. The monthly payments vary between $350-$450. You can also look out for a used 2020 Kicks at an attractive price point.

Buying Advice

We would recommend the mid-level SV trim for its good mix of features and affordability. Compared to the base S trim, the SV trim is only $1,630 more expensive. For the additional money, you get access to 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, 7-inch advanced drive-assist display, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, automatic temperature control, Nissan intelligent key, remote engine start system, silver roof rails, body-colored heated outside mirrors and some more

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 Nissan Kicks is a capable competitor in the crowded subcompact SUV segment. The underwhelming performance might be a letdown but good gas mileage and practical interior space compensates for it. In the J.D. Power Consumer Rating, the Kicks 2020 scored 78 out of 100, which can be considered as average. The driving experience, resale value and dealership experience can be considered as “Great”. Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard across all trims.

The quality and reliability score is pretty much low at just 68 out of 100 which can be considered as “Fair”. The Cost-To-Own 2020 Kicks for a term of five years is also quite acceptable. The estimated depreciation is $12,675, while the insurance charges are $5,565. The fuel and maintenance charges are calculated to be $8,550 and $5,080 respectively. So, overall the Kicks won’t be very heavy on your pocket

Buying Advice
8.0/10

We would recommend the mid-level SV trim for its good mix of features and affordability. Compared to the base S trim, the SV trim is only $1,630 more expensive. For the additional money, you get access to 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, 7-inch advanced drive-assist display, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, automatic temperature control, Nissan intelligent key, remote engine start system, silver roof rails, body-colored heated outside mirrors and some more

Features
6.0/10

The 2020 Nissan Kicks is available in three trim configurations: S, SV and SR. The starting price of the three trims are $19,070, $20,700 and $21,320 respectively. The good thing is that even the price difference between the trims is not much and buyers can consider the higher trims for a better experience. All the trims are powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 122 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque. The Kicks shines in urban environments but take it on a highway and you'll ask for more grunt.

Nissan has been generous with the Kicks and even the base S trim offers multiple safety features like a 7-inch touchscreen display with multiple connectivity options, hill-start assist, automatic emergency braking, rear automatic braking, high-beam assist, blind-spot warning, rear-cross traffic alert, remote keyless entry with push button start and many more features. The SV trim adds 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, 7-inch advanced drive-assist display, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, automatic temperature control, Nissan intelligent key, remote engine start system, silver roof rails and some more.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2020 Nissan Kicks shines with lower fuel consumption and superior fuel economy. With an EPA-estimated gas mileage of 31/36/33 mpg in the city/highway/combined conditions, Nissan’s subcompact SUV can be a good choice in times of rising gas prices. With a fuel tank capacity of 10.8 gallons, the Kicks 2020 can offer a maximum driving range 335 miles, 389 miles and 370 miles respectively. The range is on the lower side, considering the smaller size of the fuel tank.

The 2020 Nissan Kicks is the most fuel effcient in the comparision, courtesy of well-tuned CVT and lower curb weight. It is folowed by Hyundai Venue, Ford Ecosport and Toyota C-HR. However, due to very small fuel tank of just 10.8 gallons, the range in different driving conditions is quite less. In comparision, the Ecosport is the least efficient but offers the most range, courtesy of better fuel tank capacity. Itis followed by Toyota C-HR, Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks.

Interior
4.0/10

"The Kick's interior styling and makeup is a mixed bag - there are plenty of hard plastics in this Nissan, but it doesn't look or feel cheap. The overall design is fairly sleek and modern, and the interior remains quiet even when cruising at highway speeds" -Cars.usnews.com

The interior of the 2020 Nissan Kicks is not as stylish as its exterior. The interior layout can be termed as functional and non-fancy. Owing to its affordability, some compromises have been made here and there with respect to trim quality inside the cabin. However, it's not very worrisome and the subcompact SUV boasts comfortable seating and space. The seats are inspired by the "Zero Gravity" structure which makes short drives and day-to-day errands a truly comfortable proposition. Even the outside visibility is quite decent from every angle.

Even the rear seats are comfortable and adults won’t have much issue with seating. Nissan offers custom adjustable armrests for both driver and passenger. All the trims get Charcoal Cloth upholstery with contrast stitching. The top-level SR trim gets access to orange-colored contrast stitching on the seats and dashboard. With Nissan Kicks Color Studio, buyers can choose from multiple accents and finishes for the interior and exterior to make their car unique. The accents can be seen around air vents, around mirrors, floor mats and stitching.

The practicality quotient of the Kicks is quite high and it offers a cargo space of 25.3 cubic feet with all seats in place. By folding the rear 60/40-split seat back, the trunk space can be extended to 32.3 cubic feet. Some creature comforts like rear passenger under-seat heater ducts, automatic temperature control, rear door alert, intelligent key, remote engine start system and cargo cover are offered with SV and SR trims. For storage, four cup holders, four bottle holders, and four cargo tie-down hooks are offered.

Exterior
5.0/10

"Maybe it's because it calls to mind Volvo's great little XC40, but I found the Kicks attractive in a way that doesn't translate to the larger Nissan Rogue. " -Thedrive.com

The 2020 Nissan Kicks looks stylish and angular from every angle. The front fascia features the V-Motion grille and angular headlamps feature boomerang-shaped daytime running lamps. The Nissan Kicks comes with a “floating roof” design. The dimensions are similar to most of the class rivals. With a low curb weight ranging from 2,691 to 2,720 pounds and high ground clearance rated at 7 inches, the Nissan Kicks offers a 'Big' SUV feel both from within and the outside and has an upper hand over the competition in this aspect. Even the rear design is quirky with beak-shaped tail lamps, looking distinctive.

With the Nissan Kicks Color Studio, buyers can now customize their car with respect to colors of wheel caps, inserts, mirrors, interior vents and some more. Nissan offers multiple single-tone and dual-tone color options. The single tone exterior color options are Aspen White, Fresh Powder, Silver Metallic, Gun Metallic, Cayenne Red, Deep Blue, and Super Black. The two-tone color options are paired with black contrasting roof and Aspen White, Monarch Orange, and Cayenne Red. The two-tone color choice also includes Orange roof paired with Gun Metallic and Fresh Powder roof paired with Deep Blue Pearl.

The Nissan Kicks offers the maximum ground clearance in the competition, followed by Hyundai Venue and Toyota C-HR. The Ford Ecopsport is the tallest, offering better headroom. Itis followed by Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Venue and Toyota C-HR. An adequately long wheelbase of the Toyota C-HR and Nissan Kicks helps with better rear seat legroom and high speed stability on highways.

Some of the key exterior features of the 2020 Nissan Kicks are:

  • Auto On/Off LED Headlamps with LED Accents
  • LED Fog Lamps
  • Contrasting Roof Color Scheme
  • 17" Aluminum Alloy wheels
  • Body-Colored Heated ORVM
  • Roof Rails on all variants.

Safety
6.0/10

The NHTSA gave the 2020 Nissan Kicks four out of five stars in overall safety ratings. Even in the rollover test it secured a four-star rating. The IIHS named the Kicks SR its Top Safety Pick thanks to the highest rating of Good in all six crashworthiness tests. Nissan's standard automatic emergency braking has been rated "Superior" in the front crash prevention test while headlights gain mixed reviews.

For 2020, the Kicks comes standard with lots of safety features as a part of the Safety Shield 360 suite, including a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and high-beam assist. Higher trims get more active safety features such as a surround-view parking camera system and driver drowsiness monitoring.

Some of the key safety features of the 2020 Kicks include:

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Side Door Guard Beams
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • LATCH System
  • Front Seat Belts Pre tensioners with Load Limiters
  • Vehicle Dynamic Control with Traction Control
  • Front, Side, and Roof Mounted Airbags for Front and Rear Seat Passengers

Competition
8.0/10

2020 Nissan Kicks vs 2020 Ford EcoSport

The Nissan Kicks offers better performance than the base EcoSport with a 1.0-liter engine. Even the cargo capacity and fuel conomy is better than the EcoSport. The EcoSport offers better laid interior and quality trim elements.

The Ford EcoSport offers better rear seat legroom and a more rugged appearance with its spare wheel on the tail gate. Considering the pricing, the Nissan Kicks has more to offer in terms of safety features and decent ground clearance.

2020 Nissan Kicks vs 2020 Hyundai Venue

The Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks offers very similar performance in terms 0-60 mph and quarter-mile times. The Nissan Kicks offers better cargo capacity and fuel economy than the Venue.

The Venue offers well-designed interior with some modern trim elements. Even the rear seat legroom is better than the Kicks. The rear seat headroom is very similar in the Kicks and Venue. The Kicks offers better ground clearance

2020 Nissan Kicks vs 2020 Toyota C-HR

The 2020 Nissan Kicks and the 2020 Toyota C-HR, both have a eye-grabbing design in the subcompact SUV segment. The C-HR has the advantage of lower and wider dimensions along with bigger wheels while the Kick's small footprint allows it to easily zip around the traffic. On the inside, the Toyota C-HR matches the Kicks’ standard features but adds standard Apple CarPlay and an 8-inch touchscreen to eat it.

On the other hand, the Kicks' available Android Auto is a plus, which the C-HR lacks. Though none of the crossovers is performance-oriented, the Toyota C-HR is more powerful at 144 horsepower but is almost more than 1 second slower in 0-60 mph test due to high cur weight. Also, the Nissan Kick's pricing starts much lower than the Toyota C-HR and the Nissan returns the class-leading fuel economy numbers.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Nissan Kicks is one of the better-looking subcompact crossovers which undercuts almost every competitor in the class. The Kicks gets a lot of cool features and clever customization options for people who like their cars, to be funky and stylish. The interiors are built to a cost but the standard equipment and safety list are better than the rivals. The Nissan Kicks still have the highest cargo space in the segment and enormous interior space comparable to every other rival. The 2020 Nissan Kicks is hence the most sensible buy for those looking for an affordable yet stylish SUV in a compact silhouette with the flexibility of a hatchback around city.
