Overview

In the crowded crossover market, some of the SUVs opt for practicality over style. Some are ultra-modern while others are completely utilitarian. The 2020 Hyundai Tucson combines all of them into a handsome-looking package with a class-leading cabin and exceptional value for money. For a starting price tag of MSRP $23,350, the 2020 Tucson is powered either by a standard 2.0L naturally aspirated Inline-4 engine or an even more potent 2.4L 4-cylinder.

Changes to the tune of a leather-wrapped steering wheel is standard on the Sport models, whereas there are also color palette changes this time around. Hyundai also uplifts the safety quotient of the 2020 Tucson, by offering it with some of the latest safety features as standard. All-in-all a solid player, let's find out how it competes against the competition.

Buying Advice

The Tucson is well equipped no matter which trims you choose. The SEL variant hits the sweet spot, as it adds more features at a cheaper price. You get features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, a rear-seat USB port and swanky exterior styling.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 Hyundai Tucson is powered by a standard inline-four motor which is available in two different states of tune. While one makes 161 hp, the more powerful unit spits out 181 hp. You get front-wheel drive as standard along with an available all-wheel-drive option too. The interior is pleasant and spacious which is crafted from world-class materials. With the prices starting at $22,550 for the base FWD variant, the Tucson has an advantage over others as it undercuts its rivals by thousands of dollars and comes equipped with a long list of safety features. It has also got a 5-star rating from federal agencies in terms of safety which is commendable at this price point. For 2020 the revised Tucson competes with sales leaders such as Subaru Forester, GMC Terrain, and Chevrolet Equinox.

Features
9.0/10

The 2020 Hyundai Tucson is well equipped no matter what trim you choose. It comes in over 6 trims, namely SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited, and Value. The 2020 Tucson starts at $23,350 for the base trim and goes up to $33,300 for the top Ultimate variant. The SE and the Value come standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 161 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. The SEL, Sport, Limited, and Ultimate gets a 2.4-liter engine generating 181 hp and 175 lb-ft. Both engines are paired to a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard on all trims, and all-wheel drive is optional for a premium.

We Recommend

The 2020 Hyundai Tucson is well equipped no matter which trims you choose. The SEL variant hits the sweet spot, as it adds more features at a cheaper price tag of $25,950. You get features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, a rear-seat USB port, and a swanky exterior styling. A perfect value-based proposition for sure.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The 2020 Hyundai Tucson provides a decent fuel economy with both of its engines. The 2.0L four-cylinder engine with 161 hp is EPA-rated at 23 MPG in the city and 28 miles to the gallon out on the highway. The 2.4-liter engine with 181 hp is able to deliver 22 MPG in the city and 26 miles on the gallon out on the highway. Opting for all-wheel drive will significantly drop the mileage in both variants. As seen above, the 2.4L engine delivers a modicum of extra power for a drop in fuel efficiency numbers.

Interior
7.0/10

Once underway you'll be impressed by the Tucson's quiet and refined ride quality, something Hyundai representatives told us was a specific focus for the new crossover - Forbes

The cabin of the 2020 Hyundai Tucson is more like European cars with a monochromatic theme and inspired by the popular Kona. It is spacious and well-built with a new center stack and a new infotainment screen. The neatly designed dashboard houses clearly labeled controls and the layout is certainly driver-focused. Inside the 2020 Tucson is brilliantly designed to look good with an ample amount of space. The front seats are reasonably comfortable with a great amount of support and cushioning.

Touchpoints for knees and elbows are nicely padded. The 60/40 rear folding seats provide a good amount of headroom and legroom for an average individual. They also feature a slight reclining adjustment. The panoramic sunroof can be slide all the way back to feel limitless space and fresh air. The 2020 Tucson has 31.0 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 61.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Some of the standard seating features include:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Eight-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Heated and ventilated front seats

Exterior
5.0/10

The 2020 Tucson adopts the latest styling theme of Hyundai with bold and dynamic lines. The front end sports a glossy black and chrome hexagonal grille with angled-shaped LED headlights and daytime running lights. Tucson’s rounded-square wheel arches are ideal for its 19-inch alloy wheels. The 2020 Tucson is certainly stylish and modern from any angle you see.

Tucson’s rear is smartly shaped with some new headlights and a sleek aerodynamic spoiler. Two character lines, one from the front fender to the rear fender and just above the door handles accentuate the sporty appeal with a beefy C pillar. Dimensions-wise, there isn’t much difference and the chassis that uses more than 50-percent high-strength steel contributes to Tucson’s excellent safety scores.

Safety
8.0/10

The base Tucson gets all the standard safety features, however forward collision warning and the automatic emergency braking are available only on the higher trims. Coming onto the crash-tests, the 2020 Tucson gets a 5 on 5-star rating from the NHTSA, whereas it also gets a near-perfect rating from the IIHS.

2020 Hyundai Tucson vs 2020 Chevrolet Equinox

If you feel that the 2020 Hyundai Tucson is a bit slow then you should go for the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox. It accelerates fast while maintaining a smooth ride and feels agile through the turns. Plush interior and more cargo space is also a plus point for the Chevrolet which might attract your attention. The Chevrolet Equinox has an edge in terms of overall performance and is our choice out of the two.

2020 Hyundai Tucson vs 2020 Subaru Forester

There is not much difference between the two, though the Tucson is a bit wider and has more headroom in the back. The 2020 Forester is longer with more ground clearance. The only area where the Subaru edges past Hyundai is the cargo space. Forester has almost 10 cubic feet of extra cargo space than the Tucson and it is a better choice to go with as there is not much difference in the price cap as well. Subaru Forester is the best bang for your money and moreover, it is a worldwide bestseller.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Hyundai Tucson doesn’t shine in any one criteria but it’s a solid all-around contender with a smooth powertrain and a comfortable cabin for sure. You get peace of mind with outstanding crash test scores and excellent warranty coverage. It doesn’t try to be overly sporty and feels composed out on the road too. Overall it is the best value for money proposition in this segment definitely.

I bought this SUV 2021 model SE Tucson used as it was lease car before from private dealer. It had minor accident while it was under lease and was fixed by Hyundai dealer. Still car under warranty , that gives me peace of mind. I drove each and every model of eco cars, but i did not expect such a nice driving experience with this SUV. It's really super smooth and soundless while driving. Only com...

              Kia and Hyundia.. hmmm

Pros - The Color is crimson red, The Interior is comfortable

Cons - All the Noises, Any problems that might arise

I was very happy to get this vehicle because I had a 2017 and loved it. But now with all the problems coming up with Kia and Hyundai. I don't know what to do or think of this company ? I am afraid that this will become a very big problem in the future. Love the cars they have but so many problems that are showing up .
