Overview

The 2020 Hyundai Elantra comes with minor changes including more standard features, and an updated CVT while the manual transmission has been discontinued. The 2020 Elantra sedan with CVT starts at $18,950 and goes over $23,800 for the high-end Sports model. The 2020 Hyundai Elantra is really impressive for diversified buyer groups, thanks to a variety of trims and configurations. The sedan received an updated exterior styling last year, and Hyundai has added more value this year. The 2020 Elantra sedan is available in SE, SEL, Value Edition, Limited, Eco, and Sport trims, while the GT hatchback comes in base and N Line trim for 2020.

The Elantra competes with table toppers like the Honda Civic and Mazda3. And to place itself against them, Elantra highlights luxury and safety technology, generous standard features, Audi-Esque styling along with an unbeatable 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The updated CVT replaces the 6-speed manual and automatic in SE, SEL, Value Edition, and Limited models powered by a 147-horsepower 2.0-liter engine. The fuel economy also sees an improvement by 2 mpg combined. The Sport and Eco model still uses a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Buying Advice

Unless the “Eco Friendly” Conscience in you suddenly awakens you to get the “Eco” Trim, we would suggest the “Value Edition” Trim as it suits the bill well.

Of course, the Tech Savvy and Bling Friendly guys would go for the top end Limited Variant with the LED treatment and those fancy features like Wireless Charging and Premium Audio but the “Value Edition” trim is a more VFM package.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 Hyundai Elantra's major highlights include the value it offers and the variety of trims and configurations to choose from. With the sharp new looks, the current-generation Elantra comes with more standard safety and interior features this year. The pricing of the sedan starts lower than most of the rivals from Honda, Mazda, and Toyota. Buyers can choose from three available engines, depending on the requirement, be it fuel efficiency or power.

Features
7.0/10

The 2020 Elantra sedan has a base price starting from $18,950, which is below average in the compact car class. The sedan’s top-of-the-line Elantra Sport starts at $23,800, making it one of the most affordable higher trims among the rivals. With the 2020 version, Hyundai has upped its game. The 2020 Elantra features more standard safety technology and comfort features like dual-zone automatic climate control, an automatic transmission, forward-collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and driver-attention monitoring,

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

With the base engine, the 2020 Elantra gets EPA estimated 31 MPG in the city and 41 MPG on the highway. Hyundai has upgraded continuously variable transmission (CVT), which results in an improvement in fuel efficiency by two or three miles per gallon, depending on trim. The Elantra Eco models with 1.4L turbo-four get even better fuel economy ratings of 33 mpg in the city, thanks to an engine stop/start function. The Sports model with the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine gets 26/33 mpg city/highway.

The Honda Civic still manages to be the mileage king of the segment. However, with a 448 Mile Range, the Hyundai isn’t in a bad spot at all as it ranks higher above all other Sedans in this comparison.

Interior
5.0/10

"The Interior is much more sensible. Not much has changed inside -- there's a new center stack with revised air vents and climate controls, in addition to a new storage tray. The instrument cluster and its surrounding trim received updates, as well. " –Cnet.com

The interior of the 2020 Elantra remains mostly unchanged from the previous year's model. The Elantra seats five people and at 96 cubic feet, the compact sedan has passenger space on a par with midsize sedans. However, it still doesn’t match the space offered in the Honda Civic. The seats themselves offer good support and enough bolstering to not tire you out on long drives. The legroom is generous in both rows, but headroom in the front row can be slightly restrictive for taller passengers.

The base model comes with standard cloth upholstery while leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat are available. The center armrest further adds to the convenience of the cabin. One of the best aspects of the interiors of the Elantra has to be its driver-centric dash layout. The controls for the audio, climate, and the others are actual buttons unlike the touch screen systems used in the competition. This makes it easily accessible for the driver while on the go without offering much distraction from the road.

With 14.4 cubic feet of trunk space, the Hyundai Elantra has one of the best cargo spaces in the segment. The Honda Civic again leads the segment with a bigger trunk, however, the Hyundai has enough space for handling your weekly shopping luggage or your short weekend drive needs. To stand out, the Hyundai Elantra is the only car in the segment to offer Hands-Free Trunk Release that opens the trunk automatically when the proximity key is sensed by the trunk for 3 seconds,

Interior Features

  • Leather Wrapped "N" Steering
  • Red Accented Stitching in the Seats
  • N Line Sport Seats
  • Ventilated Seats
  • Power Driver's Seat with Lumbar Seat
  • Smart Cruise Control with Start/Stop
  • Driver Attention Warning
  • Auto-Dimming RVM with Blue Link

Perhaps, one of the biggest changes done to the 2020 Elantra has to be in its Infotainment System and the features offered. The 2020 Elantra now gets Hyundai’s State of the Art AVN System with an upgraded processor that enhances the speed of the System. The base SE trim gets a 5” Screen for the infotainment while the higher trims have a massive 8” System.

Other Interior features include

  • Bluetooth Telephony with Voice Recognition
  • Android Auto and Apple Car Play connectivity
  • 8 Speaker HD audio system with Sub-woofer in the Top Trim
  • Rearview Camera with Dynamic guidelines
  • Dual Automatic Temperature Control with Auto Defogging System
  • Qi Wireless Charging Pad for compatible Phones

Exterior
6.0/10

The 2020 Elantra is, frankly, a wild departure from the more demure 2019 model. The front end is a menagerie of triangles, from the headlights to the heavily sculpted lower fascia. A strong character line extends rearward toward slightly more sensible taillights, which are still more heavily styled than before. At the absolute minimum, it will help differentiate the Elantra from the rest of the compact-sedan crowd –CNET.com

After the 2019 styling update, the Hyundai Elantra has completely changed the exterior look, which looks sharper and edgier than before. With the geometric-themed design, the revised styling looks similar to the bigger Sonata but adds more personality. The headlights are now of a Triangular pattern and house LED inserts which to some minds may resemble a certain “Japanese” brand. The Fog Lamps have also being given the Triangular Treatment while the Front Grill, called the Cascading Grill is now reminiscent of the design being followed by Hyundai’s all over the world. Buyers have a choice of alloy wheels and the Limited trim’s larger 17-inch aluminum wheels add to the personality.

The Exterior Dimensions and Weights of the 2020 Elantra have been tweaked from its previous year model. The overall length has been increased to 181.9 inches from the 179.9 inches, we saw in the 2019 Model. The Elantra also has one of the lowest weights in the segments owing to the use of Aluminum in the chassis. This has in return given the Elantra a higher fuel economy figure and a better performance as compared to its previous generation “avatar”.Other dimensions still remain the same which makes the Elantra one of the most Manageable Cars to drive in the city.

The Elantra has the lowest ground clearance in the Segment and this means that you will have to be extra careful while taking the car over speed bumps. However, the low ground clearance gives the Elantra an advantage in achieving better aerodynamic efficiency and lower drag than the others.

Safety
6.0/10

The NHTSA gave the 2020 Elantra an overall safety rating of four out of five stars. The sedan earned four stars in the frontal crash, side crash, and rollover tests. The 2019 Hyundai Elantra was an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Picking up from there, Hyundai has added some active safety features as standard for the 2020 model. The entry-level Elantra SE trim now comes equipped with a forward collision warning with brake assist, lane keep assist, a driver attention monitor, and a rearview camera. The bodyshell has an Energy Absorbing column which absorbs a lot of impact in case of a collision.

Some other safety features present in the Elantra include

  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Active Lane Control
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Auto Emergency Brake Assist and ABS with EBD
  • Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Rear View Camera with Adaptive guidelines
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System with Individual Tire Pressure Indicator
  • Vehicle Stability Management and Traction Control with Electronic Stability Control
  • Dual Front, Driver Knee, Side Curtain, and Side-impact Airbags

Competition

2020 Hyundai Elantra vs. 2020 Toyota Corolla

The Japanese are good at making Reliable and Dependable Cars. The Toyota Corolla is a Testimony of the same with its record-breaking sales figures. The Corolla has been a segment champ in terms of Reliability, Cost of Maintenance, and Resale value. However, the Corolla isn’t a Lively Car and certainly not one, which makes you feel enthusiastic when you drive.

The Elantra has some amazing features on its sleeves and is certainly one of the best Handling Cars in the segment. The Engine in the Elantra has more power than the Corolla and the “Eco” trim in the Elantra offers something, for the Environment-friendly guys as well.

2020 Hyundai Elantra vs. 2020 Honda Civic

The Honda Civic is another one of the best-selling cars in the segment as it offers a mix of great handling and superb practicality. The Civic has the Elantra licking its feet when it comes to the Space offered inside the Cabin and in the Cargo. The Honda, however, has an all-touch interface for the AC and other controls.

The Hyundai still comes with Buttons and Knobs for most of its controls which make it easier for the driver to control the settings. The Elantra also looks Sleeker and sharper in its current “Avatar” and also beats the Honda in terms of the Features it has to offer.

Final Verdict

Hyundai has added some much-needed freshness and life in the compact sedan segment with the new 2020 Elantra. The current-gen Elantra looks much edgier and sharper than its previous edition with its Triangular Headlamps, Bold New Grill and a New Trunk and Tail lamp design. It also incorporates some fantastic equipment on board and a whole plethora of Safety Tech to match the latest safety norms.

To add to the growing demands of the Environmentalists, an Eco Trim in the 2020 Elantra quenches the needs for those demanding a more Fuel Efficient motor and lower emissions. To sum up then, Hyundai has done its bit to “WOW” buyers with the new Elantra. It’s got a “Love it or hate it” design which certainly can’t be ignored. It also has a good engine and with the amount of Features inside the Verna, we certainly feel that the Hyundai Verna does present a strong case for itself.

              2020 Elantra

Pros - ["Gas mileage", "Smooth ride"]

Cons - ["Just a tad small", "Nothing else really"]

Back in 2021 I was looking for a new vehicle to replace my 2013 Elantra with alot of mileage on it. Looked at multiple dealerships. Finally came across my car at a dealership and it was actually a loaner vehicle with 2500 miles on it. Worked out a good deal and brought "Black Betty" home..car has been good to me...same with the last Elantra...can't really complain about the Hyundai brand at all ...

IT'S MY THIRD ELANTRA, SO GREAT CAR

Pros - ["LOW MAINTENANCE", "GREAT ON GAS", "VERY STYLISH"]

Cons - ["HYUNDAI BLUELINK SHOULD NEVER EXPIRE AND HAVE TO BE PAID FOR TO RENEW", "0000000000000", "0000000000000"]

I FEEL THAT HYUNDAI HAS COME A LONG WAY IN SAFETY AND STYLE. THEIR LINE OF VEHICLES HAVE IMPROVED TREMEMDOUSLY IN EVERY ASPECT POSSIBLE. THERE ARE A COUPLE SAFETY FEATURES THAT KIA OFFERS THAT WOULD BE WONDERFUL IN THE HYUNDAI. FOR EXAMPLE, THE MUCH LARGER SCREEN; WHEN YOU PUT ON YOUR TURN SIGNAL, THE LANE YOU ARE MOVING INTO SHOWS UP ON THE SCREEN.

              2021 Hyundai Elantra SE

Pros - ["GPS and Maps", "Radio and Satellite"]

Cons - ["Safety features not working", "Backup cam spazzing out"]

Lame Car and I don't like it and I rather have an electric car. Little sedan just not cutting it for me and I am upset that I cannot afford the car of my dreams. Hyundai is malfunctioning and I hate it
