Overview

The second-gen Hyundai Veloster is back for the year 2020, with a couple of minor changes. To make a name for itself in its niche, Hyundai tries and makes it a point to rehash the Veloster minorly every year. Carried forward evidently, the only set of changes brought about are set to the tune of the adored manual transmission no longer being offered with the Turbo Ultimate trim. Whereas features in the form of wireless charging and blind-spot monitoring system being made standard in Turbo and R-Spec variants respectively.

While some cars like the Volkswagen Golf were solely enjoying the hot-hatch pie, Hyundai decided to grab a bite or two from this segment. To do that, they came up with the rather unconventional Veloster performance hatch with weird quirks such as its three-door style. Starting off at an MSRP of $18,800, the Hyundai Veloster comes with two engine options- a standard 2.0L NA and a 1.6L turbocharged engine carrying out its power duties.

Buying Advice

If you are thinking of buying a Veloster then definitely you are looking for something sporty. Adhering to your requirements, the R-spec trim hits the sweet spot with its turbocharged engine and automatic transmission. It also adds lots of standard tech and features.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Introduced in 2011, the Veloster received a complete overhaul in the year 2019. The unusual three-door design continues to be its unique design element to save weight and keep dimensions in check. Handling and performance areas have improved, thanks to its multilink suspension and the refined 1.6L turbocharged engine.

You must be pretty familiar with the Veloster's turbocharged motor, but the bigger 2.0L naturally aspirated unit lacks the punch, however, more on that later. Both powertrains come mated to a six-speed manual while a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional. Now despite the different engines on offer, the Veloster gets the same fuel efficiency. The cabin is serene and is stuffed with a plethora of technology inside. The rivals of the Veloster include the likes of the Honda Civic Sport, Toyota Corolla SE hatch, and the Ford Fiesta ST.

Features
8.0/10

The 2020 Hyundai Veloster is segregated into five trims, namely 2.0 Base, 2.0 Premium, Turbo R-Spec, Turbo, Turbo Ultimate. While the base trims, "2.0 Base" and "2.0 Premium" feature a bigger NA unit under the hood, the rest of the trims feature a smaller yet more powerful turbocharged motor. The base trims lack any excitement under the hood, which is why it's the top-three trims that provide you with sheer power for the price. That said, there is no shortage of the features in any of the trims, of course, albeit the base trim. The top trim, "Turbo Ultimate" brings along some extraordinary features such as rain-sensing wipers, Smart Cruise Control, Forward Collision Assist with the pedestrian detection system, and a lot more.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2020 Hyundai Veloster, with the 2.0L NA engine in place, is rated at 25 MPG in the city and 33 miles to the gallon out on the highway. This is with the 6-speed automatic transmission on offer. Opt for the turbocharged engine unit and the Veloster is rated at 26-28 miles to the gallon in the city and 33-34 miles to the gallon out on the highway, depending on the transmission in place.

The Veloster N, on the other hand, is a mighty guzzler, with it being rated at 22 and 29 MPG in the city and highway respectively. The Veloster uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that uses Atkinson-Cycle for high efficiency and lower emissions. The Honda Civic is the most fuel-efficient here with 33 MPG combined. The Veloster bags one of the last spots in the segment because of the higher power output.

Interior
5.0/10

The 2020 Hyundai Veloster sticks with its asymmetrical doors, and amps up interior quality - Car Connection

The interior of the previous iterations of the Veloster which is inspired by the Hyundai Kona is almost unchanged but has been catered to new levels of quality. The Hyundai Veloster despite being smaller in dimensions has a spacious cabin just like other rivals. The driver-focused cabin layout has well-bolstered seats in the front, which keep you comfortable every time you take on a fastback corner.

Coming onto the rear seats, average-sized adults can sit inside comfortably, although boarders above 6 ft, might find it to be a bit claustrophobic inside. Now as there is only one door in the rear, ingress and degree turn out to be quite difficult. Depending on the trims, the color schemes also change, with the Turbo variant getting updated sporty stitching with the seats. Coming onto the infotainment front, the 2020 Veloster comes with an impressively intuitive 8-inch touchscreen system with in-built navigation. it responds well to inputs and does it without any lag.

The 2020 Hyundai Veloster is intentionally different, consciously quirky and designed to stand out from the crowd – Autotrader.com

The 2020 Hyundai Veloster is one of the most impressive-looking hatchbacks in the segment. Sturdy, athletic dimensions, backed by a scintillating side profile filled with character lines, is what make the Veloster click. it has a unique 3 door silhouette, which seems quirky at first but practicality-wise not so much. It also has a fastback design layout, which hardly robs of the rear space headroom.

The front is dominated by a long hood space followed by a huge aggressive grille structure. Partnering it at the corners are two symmetrical yet sleek LED headlights with included DRLs. The front also gets functional air splitters. The rear is dominated by sleek-looking LED taillights, followed by chrome-laden dual exhausts at the bottom. Come the year 2020, the Hyundai Veloster replaces the normal black front grille and exterior accents with gloss black shade.

Coming onto the crash-test scores, the NHTSA gave it a 4 on 5-star rating, whereas the IIHS rewarded it with an overall "Good" rating.

  • Blind Spot Collision Warning

2020 Hyundai Veloster vs 2020 Toyota Corolla

The 2020 Toyota Corolla is a pretty good car in terms of outright reliability and safety systems, but when it comes to performance figures, the Veloster's 1.6L turbocharged unit is surely the best out of both.

Although, on coming to the interior part, Corolla does have a better rear cabin space than the claustrophobic one in the Veloster. Nevertheless, the feature list in the Veloster is much better. The Toyota Corolla is certainly cheaper than the Hyundai offering.

2020 Hyundai Veloster vs 2020 Honda Civic

Probably the closest competitor to the Veloster, the Honda Civic is certainly right up there with the best. Available in a variety of body styles, the Civic hatchback is certainly the most adored amongst the rest.

Both have potent engines, but when it comes to the ride and handling dynamics, the Veloster is definitely the winner. The interior space offered is also right up there, although, the Civic is certainly more practical than the Veloster.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Hyundai Veloster is a terrific car if you are ready to live with a silly door layout. Its performance is exciting because of the turbocharged engine running its power duties, and also because it aids in making the Veloster one of the fastest cars in the segment. The Veloster is stylish and satisfying to drive when compared to the rivals. This hatchback features plenty of interior space and user-friendly infotainment system. So to sum it up, for the asking price of $19,000, there isn't much to complain about.
