Overview

Over the years, Mitsubishi Mirage has been one of the more affordable entry point to the new car market. Mirage has a two unique offering over the used cars - its price and factory warranty. Mirage hatchback is a bare-bones car that has an impressive fuel efficiency for a non-hybrid/non-electric vehicle. Mitsubishi Mirage competes with Chevy Sonic, Nissan Versa Note, and Kia Rio.

The 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage is a car that, name notwithstanding, is just what it appears to be: an inexpensive hatchback suited for basic travel. That said, the Mirage isn’t ugly; it’s just bland. At least the new-for-2020 LE trim’s black-painted exterior mirror caps and 15-inch wheels add a small bit of personality to this largely forgettable design.

Buying Advice

Mirage's greatest asset is its price. If you are shopping for a Mitsubishi Mirage then it would be best to stick to the ES trim. It has a touchscreen interface, Bluetooth connectivity and a rear view camera. The higher trims make less sense as you can buy a better car with that money.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Small hatchbacks are efficient workhorses that serve as affordable transportation for many of us. Designing a small and affordable car isn’t an easy job. It is very difficult to get it right. 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage is powered by a three cylinder engine which is designed to offer a great fuel economy. This hatchback offers a combined mpg of 39. If you are looking for a small car to majorly use in town, but aren’t willing to purchase a used one. Mirage offers a package that might surprise you.

Features
4.0/10

The 2020 Mirage hatchback is offered in four trim levels: ES, LE, SE and GT. All the trims are powered by a three cylinder engine that produces 78 horsepower and 74 lb-ft. of torque. The interiors aren't that tempting but will remind you of the price you have paid. The base trim boasts of a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system which is something interesting and pleasing. The car offers remote keyless entry, and it also comes with a panic feature. The hatchback comes with door locks including power windows. Other standard features include Air conditioning, Hill Start Assist (HSA), and a rear spoiler.

Interestingly, there is a little smaller infotainment system in the upper models which includes a 6.5 Smartphone Link Display Audio (SDA) System. The Mirage SE and GT got all the standard feature of the base variant ES.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Mitsubishi Mirage lives up to its name as a frugal car. 2020 Mirage is powered by a frugal three-cylinder gasoline engine. Low curb weight also helps the cause - with lesser weight to haul, the engine can return good fuel efficiency. The entry-level hatchback offers best-in-class fuel economy of 36 and 43 mpg on city roads and freeway respectively.

The front seats are well-cushioned, but the awkward seat position and limited adjustments make it difficult to get comfortable. The rear seats are overly firm, and a lack of legroom makes them feel tight.-Cars.USnews

Seating and Comfort

The compact hatchback offers a seating capacity of five passengers which is standard in the segment. The main highlights of Mirage's interiors include 4-way adjustable driver's and front passenger seat, Manual air conditioning climate control, foldable rear seats, and Keyless Entry with panic alarm on the board. Features like the Leather-wrapped steering wheel and automatic climate control system are available on upper trim levels. The front passenger seats are acceptable though the rear seat dimensions and plastic material quality is below the standards of the segment.

Space isn't an issue with this car. Whether you are driving or sitting behind, you would be content with the space on offer. If you plan to keep your car for a long time, then you might be a bit put off by the lower quality of interior fit and finish.

Infotainment

The Mirage offers an easy-to-use infotainment system. One strange thing is that the updated infotainment system (that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) is offered with a smaller screen than the one offered with the base model.

The base trim comes with a 7-inch touch screen, a four-speaker stereo, a rearview camera, and power windows and door locks. The infotainment system is intuitive. The dials and buttons are well-positioned and the driver doesn't need to take his eyes off the road to change a setting. Some of the key features are :

  • Steering mounted Audio, Voice and Phone Control
  • 6.5" Touchscreen Infotainment System with AM/FM/CD
  • Apple Car Play and Android Auto
  • 4 Speaker Audio System
  • Bluetooth Wireless Connectivity
  • USB and AUX Ports

Cargo Capacity

Cargo capacity is high on the lists of budget shoppers. The Mirage hatchback scores high when it comes to utility and frugality. Many buyers consider these two factors while purchasing a car in this segment. Mitsubishi Mirage offers a cargo capacity of 17.2 cu-ft. The Mirage offers decent space but it is nowhere near the segment leaders. Chevy Sonic leads the competition with a huge 17.2 cu-ft. of boot space.

The 2020 Mirage received a new front end with an actual grille two years ago, so it looks less like a generic toy car than it did. All around, though, this car has styling cues at least a decade old, and its competitors are more exciting to look at, especially when it comes to the ungainly G4 sedan model. The hatchback's longer roof gives it better proportions than the three-box Mirage G4 sedan.-TheCarConnection

Dimensions and Weight

The exteriors aren't undergone a drastic makeover as the 2020 Mirage resembles its predecessor in looks. The major changes in the 2020 model include updated new bumpers, headlights, and taillights. The main exterior features include old compact design, 14-inch steel wheels, small bonnet grills, and sporty headlights; alloy wheels and bi-xenon HID headlights are available in the upper trims.

The hatchback and sedan feature a large chrome grille with a handsomely detailed lower bumper. The trunk gives the little car a more mature persona, and while it offers decent cargo space,

The Mirage hatch doesn't score special points for maximum dimensions. It is a relatively smaller car than the competition. Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback has a short wheelbase (96.5-inch) which leads to a cramped seating position for the rear passengers.

Exterior Features :

  • Fog Lamps
  • Body-Colored Front and Rear Bumpers
  • Body-Colored Powered External Rear View Mirror
  • 15" Alloy Wheels
  • Rear Window Defroster
  • Short Pole Antenna
  • Temporary Spare Tire
  • Front Variable Intermittent Wipers

Safety
8.4/10

The Mirage hatchback hasn't gone through any major structural change. So, the federal testing agency is yet to give a safety score for the 2020 model year.

Safety Features

For 2020 though, Mitsubishi has standardized some of the features that were only available as optional equipment on the 2018 Mirage. The 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback is available with a long list of standard safety features:

  • Dual Front Side-Mounted Airbags
  • Front And Rear Head Airbags
  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Passenger Airbag Occupant Sensing Deactivation
  • Rear Height Adjustable Headrests
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System

Competition

Mitsubishi Mirage vs Nissan Versa Note

Nissan Versa Note is powered by a 109 hp inline-four engine. The Versa Note starts at a lower sticker price of $15,650. Versa is severely underpowered for its class so be prepared for lackluster acceleration. Only upside is Versa's excellent mpg numbers. The interior is roomy but lacks the fit and finish and standard equipment Versa's infotainment cannot match Chevy's advanced MyLink infotainment system. Chevy Sonic is a better equipped and more powerful option than the Versa Note.

Mitsubishi Mirage vs Kia Rio

Kia Rio is powered by a 130 hp inline-four engine. 2020 Kia Rio starts from a price of $16,400. Rio hatchback is available in a single well-appointed trim only. Kia Rio is a well-known nameplate in the subcompact segment. Rio has a well laid out cabin, a generous cargo space, good handling and a user-friendly infotainment system. Not everyone would be happy to be in a Rio but considering the things on offer, actually a lot on offer for the price. Kia Rio should be high on your list if you are looking for budget car with better fit and finish.

Mitsubishi Mirage vs Honda Fit

Honda Fit is powered by the iconic 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine. The pricing for the base trim of the Honda Pilot start at $16,190. Honda Fit scores high on utility. Honda offers better passenger room and cargo space. It is also offered with Honda's suite of safety features Honda Sensing at the higher trim levels. The Fit beats the Sonic with its better fuel economy, utilitarian magic seats and a better resale value.

Final Verdict
6.8/10

Mitsubishi Mirage doesn't bring a ton of updates for the 2020 model year. The Mirage hatch still resembles its predecessor in a lot of ways, recent tweaks to the exterior bring in an air of freshness to the design. The compact hatchback offers a moderate design , although it won't turn any heads it will offer best-in-class fuel economy. What it lacks in performance, acceleration, and craftsmanship is duly made up by a low price tag, reasonable cargo capacity, optimal ground clearance and low cost of operation. If you want a new car with complete warranty cover within a limited budget then Mitsubishi Mirage should be high on your shopping list.
