The 2017 Hyundai Veloster is a three-door hatchback priced competitively at $18,100 as starting MSRP. The 2017 Veloster spec sheet is long which surprisingly misses out on advanced safety features. The base Veloster is powered by a weak inline-4 engine that is not only lackluster to drive but also offers low fuel economy figures. The Veloster Turbo and Turbo R-Spec trim get the juicer turbo-four engine that is quick and offers an engaging drive experience.

The ride and handling go from worse to okay depending upon the trim you choose. Having said that, those looking for a hot hatchback that has an engaging drive and is fast of the line will need to go for the $3,500 pricier Veloster Turbo R-Spec trims while the Veloster base trim is still not there when compared to its equivalent four-door hatchback rivals that not only offer better performance but also better cabin and cargo space.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2017 Hyundai Veloster has added the Value Edition trim to its lineup and now offers four trims. The Value Edition trim is targeted for those who don't want to go for the turbo-four engine but want the features like sunroof, navigation, heated seats, etc which are otherwise only available on the Turbo trims. There are two engine options offered on the Veloster, the base is a 132 hp, 1.6-liter inline-4 engine while the other one is a 201 hp, 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine. For the slight drop in mileage, the turbo-four engine drops the 0-60 mph timing compared to the base Veloster by as much as 1.6 seconds.

Moving inside, the Hyundai Veloster would disappoint buyers who frequently need to carry passengers at the back. Although Hyundai has given a third door for better ingress and egress in the rear seats, the lack of head and legroom at the rear makes it uncomfortable sitting at the back. There are two engine options available in the 2017 Veloster along with manual and dual-clutch automatic gearbox choices. The base trim starts at as low as $18,100 and is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. The newest entry in the Veloster lineup is the Value Edition trim that starts at $21,350 and comes well equipped with comfort and convenience features which are otherwise only available as an option on the topmost Turbo trim.

For those who need a hot hatchback, the Turbo R-Spec trim priced at $21,600 is the way to go. It gets a turbocharged engine and performance upgrades with a spicy 6-speed manual gearbox and a short-throw shifter. While those who only need the turbocharged engine but don't want the performance mods can go for the top-of-the-line Turbo trim that starts at $22,600. The Turbo trim upgrades the interior and offers the creature comfort and convenience features as a part of an optional package that goes by the Turbo Tech Package.

Even after having a smaller displacement and less powerful engine the gas mileage of the Veloster is lesser than the Mazda 3 and the Ford Focus both of which get bigger displacement naturally aspirated engines. The Honda Civic on the other hand returns the best gas mileage figures and returns 3 mpg more in the city, 5 mpg more on the highway, and 3 mpg more combined compared to the Veloster.

2017 Hyundai Veloster Seating and Comfort 

The interior design of the 2017 Hyundai Veloster seems busy especially around the V-shaped center console of the dash that houses the infotainment and several knobs and controls for various functions. The all-black dashboard has silver accents around the AC vents and a swooping design. The overall material quality and fit and finish levels are satisfactory for the price point. The base trim gets an all-black interior while the higher trims can either be had in black with orange accents or black with blue accents. 

The Hyundai Veloster is a unique three-door, four-seater sports hatchback. The third door is a saving grace as it allows for easy slide-in to the rear seats. Although the front seats are the highlight of the Veloster which are not only wide and comfortable but have sufficient bolstering and side winglets to keep you snug while driving hard around the corners. Base trim misses out on a lot of comfort and convenience features while the all-new Value Edition packs in creature comfort feature at a bargain premium of two grand over the base trim.

Veloster is the only hatchback that offers seating for four while the rest all offer seating for five. The Honda Civic and Mazda 3 have around 2-inches longer wheelbase compared to the Veloster and have used it well to ensure better legroom at the rear even the Ford Focus that has a similar wheelbase as the Veloster manages better legroom in the rear seats. The Veloster is also the smallest in terms of height and that coupled with the sloping roofline eats a lot in terms of headroom in both the rows.

The standard infotainment system on the 2017 Hyundai Veloster is a 7-inch touchscreen and comes packed with desirable features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Also standard on all the 2017 Velosters is Hyundai BlueLink that is similar to GM's OnStar telematics system. Overall the standard infotainment is easy to use coupled with the physical buttons which are easy to access and ergonomically laid out around the center of the dash. Moving up the trim ladder you will add a 450-watt 8-speaker premium sound system.

The 2017 Hyundai Veloster offers 15.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and with the seats folded you can expand the same to up to 34.7 cubic feet. That said, the higher than usual loading lip makes it a task while putting in heavy cargo inside the Veloster's boot.

2017 Hyundai Veloster Dimensions and Weight

The main highlight of the 2017 Hyundai Veloster's exterior is its unique three-door style. The driver side has one big door while the passenger side cleverly squeezes in two smaller doors. Sitting at 166.1-inches in length, the Hyundai Veloster isn't a long hatchback although has a squatted stance and a generous 104.3-inches of wheelbase giving it a well-proportioned look. The prominent wheel arches and a high beltline is the highlight of the rear profile while upfront the big trapezoidal grille and swept nack headlights give it a mean and hot hatch looks.

The lower variants ditch the foglights which are either standard or optional on higher trims. At the rear, the Veloster has a unique design language with the sloping roof giving way to a small rear glass. The real taillights are oval in shape with a dimple on both the ends of the tailgate that looks like an extension of the taillight. Lower down you get center-mounted twin tailpipes and two reflectors flaking through the sides.

2017 Hyundai Veloster Vs 2017 Mazda Mazda3 Hatchback

The 2017 Mazda 3 hatchback is approximately one grand pricier than the Veloster but for the premium, it gets a better and more powerful engine which helps the Mazda 3 be far quicker than the Veloster in both the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile run. Even after putting out so much power and performance the Mazda 3 matches the city gas mileage of the Veloster and beat it on the highway by 3 mpg.

Other than that the Mazda 3 is far more fun-to-drive and handles much better than the standard Veloster. Coming to the interiors here also the cabin of the Mazda 3 hatchback looks upmarket than the Veloster's. While the bigger dimensions of the Mazda 3 helps it liberate better leg and headroom inside its cabin which is lacking in the Veloster. Between the two thus the Mazda 3 is the one to go for.

2017 Hyundai Veloster Vs 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback

The 2017 Honda Civic comes with a turbo-four engine as standard which is not only more powerful and quicker off the line than the naturally aspirated inline-4 powered Veloster but also returns phenomenal gas mileage. The ride and handling of both the hatchback are at par while the braking performance of the heavier Veloster is better than the Civic. 

The cabin space of the Civic is also its main highlight as compared to it, the Veloster's cabin feels cramped especially at the rear. Also, the Civic is longer between the two thus offers class-leading boot space which is more than 10 cubic feet of what the Veloster offers. That said, we feel the Veloster isn't there yet and the Civic is one to go for between the two.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Hyundai Veloster tries to tread on the hot hatchback lines with a quirky design language and some unique performance mods on the Turbo R-Spec trim. With the choice of naturally aspirated engine in the base trim, Hyundai has tried to keep the entry price low but that comes at the expense of the performance and driving dynamics for which the Veloster Turbo R-Spec trim has been praised all along.

That said, if you are going for the Tubro trims then the only compromise you will have to do is in the form of fuel economy, rear-seat space, and cargo area while the naturally spirated powered Veloster adds lackluster performance and uninspiring handling to the list. Therefore, unless you can go for the Turbo trims of the Veloster it's better to skip this one.

              Air conditioning switch is faulty and center console must be replaced each year

              Pros - After center console is replaced the air conditioning works fine

              Cons - These center consoles are $250

              I am glad I bought the extended waranty for the car. After we had the car 5 years, we had to replace the center console 3 times. It seems to last only a year and must be replaced. It is clear this is a manufacture defect and we keep asking when this will be resolved. At $250 each, I do not want to keep replacing the center console after the waranty falls off after 10 years.
