Overview

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark offers a surprise in the form of the ACTIV trim. Chevrolet redesigned the Spark just last year and to make things more exciting, the ACTIV trim boasts of rugged styling with distinct front and rear fascias, 15-inch alloy wheels, increased ride height, cladding, and roof rails. However, the Spark EV is no longer on offer. Also, to entice young buyers, Chevrolet has added Mosaic Black, Nightfall Gray, Brimstone, Mint and Red Hot exterior colors to the entire lineup. The 2017 Chevrolet Spark price starts at $13,000 and an additional $875 is levied as destination fee across every trim configuration.

Featuring a 4-trim lineup of LS, 1LT, ACTIV, and 2LT, the 2017 Chevrolet Spark MSRP can be an expense of $13,000-$16,325 this season. Having said that, it simply translates to the fact that the range-leader 2017 Chevy Spark 2LT will cost you $3,325 more than the base 2017 Spark LS for enhanced specs and assets.

We Recommend

Considering the list of features, specification and an msrp of $16,325, we would suggest going for the 2017 Chevrolet Spark 2LT trim.

Under the hood of every Spark is a 1.4-liter engine with 98 horsepower. With a gas mileage of 34 mpg (combined), the 2017 Chevrolet Spark mpg is not the best. Even the driving range is on the lower side, owing to a smaller gas tank. With just one recall and 21 complaints, the 2017 Chevrolet Spark problems are not very significant. With a cargo space of 11.1 cu.-ft, the interior of the small hatchback is decent. The Spark is less expensive than the Honda Fit, lighter than the Kia Rio hatchback and more powerful than the Mitsubishi Mirage.

2017 Chevrolet Spark for sale

The 2017 Chevy Spark LS trim lease cost can be a matter of $192/month for a term of 36 months with an annual mileage limit of 10,000 miles. The same model can also be financed for as low as 3.49% APR for a term of 48 months and $295/month along with 10% down payment.

For budget-oriented buyers, the 2017 Chevrolet Spark used can be availed of with a base price of $8,495. Going for older model years like the 2016 Chevy Spark could be a matter of $3,998 and Chevy Spark 2015 can cost as much as $5,995 along with a listing of up to 2,839 in total.

Buying Advice

We suggest going for the 2LT that costs under twenty grands and adds a lot of nifty features. You get keyless entry and push-button start, heated front seats, parking sensors, better driver multi-information display, leatherette upholstery, and a few more over-the-base trim. Being a budget car the base trim is sparsely equipped and going for the top trim makes day-to-day life easy with the added features.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark comes with no major changes except for the discontinuation of the Chevrolet Spark EV. The 2017 Spark is powered by a 98-hp, 1.4-liter inline-4 engine mated to a manual or a CVT gearbox. The price of the 2017 Chevrolet Spark starts at $13,000 which is an approximately $500 price bump from the previous year's model.

The Spark is a very frugal hatchback that strikes a fine balance between ride comfort and handling. The small footprint of the Spark aids in better maneuverability in the city although the cabin space and cargo area take a hit in the Spark due to it. Having said that, the 2017 Spark falls under the subcompact hatchback segment and rivals the likes of Honda Fit, Kia Rio, and Mitsubishi Mirage

Features
6.0/10

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark comes in four trims LS, 1LT, ACTIV, and 2LT trims. The base LS trim starts at $13,000 and comes with the manual transmission. The four-pot engine is also standard across the range. The CVT gearbox is available as an option for $1,100 extra on all the trims. Next comes the 1LT trim that starts at $14,825 followed by the topmost 2LT that starts at $16,325.

The ACTIV trim is a new addition this year and starts at $16,070. The ACTIV trim raises the ground clearance, adds roof rails, ACTIV specific bodywork and alloy wheel design, etc. As for the standard features, the main highlight remains the Chevrolet MyLink and GM's OnStar Service that adds various smartphone connectivity options and a Wi-Fi hotspot respectively.

We suggest going for the 2LT that costs under twenty grands and adds a lot of nifty features. Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark as per EPA estimates returns 29 mpg in the city, 38 mpg on the highway, and 33 mpg combined. While if you go for the CVT gearbox then there is a one mpg increase in the city gas mileage. That said, the Spark gets the smallest 9-gallon fuel tank making you visit the gas station frequently.

Model 2017 Chevrolet Spark 2017 Honda Fit 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage 2017 Kia Rio

The stellar fuel economy figures of the Mitsubishi Mirage due to its smaller inline-3 engine and lower curb weight are unbeatable. Compared to the Mirage, the Spark returns 4 mpg less in the city, 3 mpg less on the highway, and 3 mpg less combined. The Kia Rio remains the least efficient but masks it well with the biggest 11.4-gallon fuel tank.

The rigidly upright seats aren’t particularly comfortable. The rear row has decent legroom compared with rivals, but taller passengers won’t be able to stretch out. -cars.usnews

2017 Chevrolet Spark Seating and Comfort

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark offers only seating for four when the rivals come with seating for up to five passengers. The Chevrolet Spark offers a spacious cabin upfront and a good view of what's outside due to the tall seating position. Although the seats lack support and can get tiresome over long journeys. Moving to the backseat, you won't be comfortable here either due to the restricted headroom and smaller legroom. This can be attributed to the fact that the 2017 Spark comes with the shortest 93.9-inches of wheelbase.

Coming to the rivals, the Honda Fit is the most spacious hatchback among all followed by the Mitsubishi Mirage. The Honda Fit is wider than the Spark and thus is able to offer better shoulder room and seating for three passengers at the rear. As for the Kia Rio, it has the most generous front legroom but that comes at the price of rear legroom which is 1.9-inches less than Spark's 33-inches of rear legroom.

2017 Chevrolet Spark Infotainment System

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark is equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen as standard which runs on Chevrolet's MyLink. As standard, you get a four-speaker sound system with AM/FM stereo, built-in Wi-Fi, etc. Smartphone connectivity options include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. Moving above the trim ladder adds a six-speaker sound system and SiriusXM satellite radio with a 3-month all-access trial.

Interior Features

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark packs in a decent list of features. Key interior features worth looking at includes:

  • Single-zone air conditioning
  • Fabric upholstery
  • Rear-window defogger
  • Available cruise control
  • Available keyless entry and push-button start
  • Available heated front seats

2017 Chevrolet Spark Cargo Volume

The cargo volume offered in the 2017 Spark is 11.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats and with the rear seats folded it can be further increased to 27.2 cubic feet. Rear seats also offer a 60/40-split for added flexibility.

Cargo Volume 2nd row folded (ft.3) 27.2 52.7 47.0 49.8

All the rivals manage to beat the Spark when it comes to cargo space with the Mitsubishis Mirage offering the highest 17.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats and Honda Fit 52.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

For 2017 the Spark displays a more refined profile. While still diminutive, Chevy's little hatchback appears more proportional thanks to a lower roof and longer wheelbase. -Kelley Blue Book

2017 Chevrolet Spark Dimensions and Weight

The Chevrolet Spark has a very small footprint and that reflects in its dimensions. The look of the Spark is a clear departure from its previous iteration and now has a well-rounded and mature appeal to it. The front fascia has been given an aggressive look with a big grille and angular side intakes. The abruptly breaking crease line on the side profile is somehow well-executed and goes well with the overall design. Overall the design of the 2017 Spark has made it look more mature and bigger than it actually is dimensionally. Going for the ACTIV will get you a raised ride height, black-plastic cladding all around the body, and roof rails to give a tough and rugged look.

As for the rival, the Honda Fit is the longest and the tallest hatchback. The Kia Rio is the widest and has the longest wheelbase. Compared to the Honda Fit, the Spark is smaller by 16.9-inches and shorter by 1.6-inches. While the Spark has a 7.3-inches smaller wheelbase and is 4.9-inches less wide than the Rio. On the flip side, the Chevrolet Spark has the highest ground clearance of 6.6-inches and if you go for the ACTIV trim the ground clearance goes up to 7.0-inches.

Key exterior features of the 2017 Chevrolet Spark includes:

  • Halogen headlamps
  • Rear spoiler
  • Available 15-inch alloy wheels
  • Available sunroof
  • Available heated and power-adjustable outside mirror

Safety
7.0/10

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark hasn't been rated by the NHTSA yet while the IIHS has only partially crash-tested the Spark. As per the IIHS, the 2017 Spark scored a rating of 'Good' for the front and side crash test while the ease of use of LATCH was rated as the second-best 'Acceptable'. The Chevrolet Spark equipped with the optional safety features was rated with the lowest rating of 'Basic' in front vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention.

Key safety features of the 2017 Chevrolet Spark includes:

  • Rearview Camera
  • Electronic stability control w/ brake assist
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Available Forward collision warning
  • Available lane-departure warning
  • Available rear parking sensors

Competition
7.3/10

2017 Chevrolet Spark vs 2017 Honda Fit

The 2017 Honda Fit is approximately three grand expensive than the 2017 Spark but for the premium, it offers more power and torque, faster 0-60 mph and quarter-mile timings, a spacious cabin, and a best-in-class cargo capacity compared to the Spark.

The Spark on the other hand is easier to maneuver in tight space and offers slightly better gas mileage, especially on the highway compared to the Fit. But these minor advantages are not enough to help the Spark beat the Fit.

2017 Chevrolet Spark vs 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage

The 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage is almost similar in terms of pricing to the Spark. It comes with the least powerful inline-3 engine compared to Spark's more powerful inline-4 engine. Both the hatchbacks are slow to drive but the same is more pronounced in the Mirage.

On the plus side, the Mirage offers seating for one more passenger and much better cargo space compared to the Spark. Talking about the fuel economy there is no comparison between the two as the Mirage with one cylinder less and lower curb weight is the most frugal hatchback.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark is a budget hatchback and thus it won't disappoint you if you keep that fact in mind before judging it. The Spark is a perfect city-commuter thanks to its smaller footprint and a peppy engine. The ride quality and handling are for the most part decent for its size and segment. The highlight of this small city-commuter is its fabulous gas mileage which is second to what the most fuel-efficient Mitsubishi Mirage returns. That said, the biggest con of the Spark is its small cabin size and uncomfortable seats. Thus if you are on a tight budget and looking for a city commuter then the Chevrolet Spark is well-suited otherwise the more spacious and powerful Honda Fit is a better choice here.

              My almost dream car

Pros - ["Smallest on the road", "5 speed, very few can drive"]

Cons - ["Minimal options", "Limited screen options"]

The 5-speed is great, but everything in the transmission and clutch had to be replaced at 40,000 miles. It gets between 25 to 35 miles per gal. Everything works, but the sun visors need replacing. They broke from sun exposure and stuck. Replaced the tires, and even with new brake pads you hear a squel sometimes. This is a nonelectric vehicle, it's totally all manual.
