The 2019 Chevrolet Spark belongs to the second generation Spark introduced in 2015. However, to make things interesting, Chevrolet has redesigned the front fascia with new grille and headlights. Also, some new wheel designs and exterior colors are added. The infotainment system now runs on Infotainment 3 interface. The Chevrolet Spark 2019 price starts at $13,220 and an additional $875 is charged as destination fee.

Featuring a 4-trim lineup of LS, 1LT, ACTIV, and 2LT, the 2019 Chevrolet Spark MSRP can be an expense of $13,220-$16,620 this season. With an mpg rating of 33 mpg (combined), the 2019 Chevrolet Spark mpg and range are quite satisfactory for urban usage. With just one recall and eight complaints, the 2019 Chevy Spark problems are not worrisome. The base trim has only the very basic features, while the highest trim does offer a few luxurious comfort features. Which Trim should you buy?

Engine and Performance

The 2019 Chevrolet Spark engine is a 1.4L Ecotec inline-four unit that only puts out 98 horsepower and 94 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual, or you can upgrade to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Power is only routed to the front wheels.

The hatchback is quite sluggish, but it does its duties well as a small city cruiser. The manual transmission offers adequate practicality and ease of use for your regular city driving. The CVT makes the powertrain more sluggish to respond. The manual offers decent power throughout the entire rev range and can also cruise way better than the CVT at highway speeds. In short, the manual is the one to go for.

With the manual, the Spark takes a long and yawny 10 seconds to hit the 60 MPH mark, but the CVT makes things worse. The quarter-mile times are unbearably long, at 18 seconds. Quick highway overtaking and maneuvers will require proper and prior planning before flooring the gas pedal. The top speed is set at 114 MPH, but we doubt you would ever reach that.

When it comes to power output, the Chevy is completely left behind by the more potent rivals, all of which produce significantly more power than the Chevy. The Spark is also the slowest, while the Honda Fit and the Kia Rio take the lead. The Ford Fiesta is also left behind by its Asian counterparts.

How well does the 2019 Chevrolet Spark handle?

Don’t let the powertrain of the American hatchback fool you, for it offers a pretty nimble and interesting ride. The hatchback has cheerful and fun to drive nature. The compact size of the car also inspires drivers, especially inexperienced ones, to drive without worrying about the congested city traffic. Due to its stout size, it can easily be thrown around corners with minimal body roll.

The ride quality is well-balanced for a small car and goes over any undulations with confidence. The suspension does a commendable job of keeping the occupants comfortable and soaking up most road imperfections. The cabin is not the quietest though, but yeah, you cannot have your cake and eat it too.

Braking Performance

The Spark comes with decent-sized brakes considering the car’s size with 4-wheel ABS. The front rotors are 9.3 inches, while the rear uses drum brakes of 7.9 inches. It takes 177 ft to come to a halt from 70 MPH. The car is very light too, at just around 2,312 lbs and it does not take much power to come to a halt. The pedal is linear and does not have any hidden issues.

The Spark comes with the smallest brakes, while the rivals here have bigger brakes. The 60-0 MPH stopping distance of the Honda Fit is not confidence-inducing at all at a braking distance of 126 ft. The Ford Fiesta performs decently with a braking distance of 121 ft. Again, the Kia Rio’s braking performance is not known but from the size of its rotors and considering its curb weight, we expect a decent stopping distance from the car as well.

The Spark has a pretty frugal powertrain, but it is not the most frugal in its segment. It still can be considered to offer “above average” gas mileage in its segment. The 2019 Chevrolet Spark mpg is rated at 29 for the city, 38 for the highway, and 33 MPG combined output. Meanwhile, the CVT offers 30 MPG for the city, with the rest of the figures remaining the same.

It comes with a small 9-gallon fuel tank, which still allows it to cruise for 270/333/297 miles. This is not a car you would want to take on very long trips without any gas stations nearby. Not the highest range in the segment either.

The other hatchbacks completely leave the Spark in the dust when it comes to the total driving range offered. The Ford Fiesta has the lowest fuel economy here but offers the best driving range owing to its sizable 12.4-gallon gas tank. The Honda Fit and the Kia Rio are almost evenly matched with each other in terms of fuel economy and trail the Spark closely.

Yes, indeed it is. Though the 2019 Chevrolet Spark interior is not stuffed with the most advanced tech and the most comfortable materials, it still offers an attractive yet neat design. The dashboard has a design that would perfectly fit inside a tiny hatchback like this. The V-shaped design slopes down at the center console. There are buttons and dials within easy reach of the driver making the design pretty ergonomic. On the LS and 1LT trim, you will find Jet Black cloth as standard. But the ACTIV and 2LT get Jet Black leatherette with silver accent stripes. You also leather-wrapped steering heated in the higher trims.

The base trims have a 4-way driver’s seat with manual fore/aft and manual recline and a 2-way passenger’s seat with just manual recline. The head restraints are also 2-way adjustable. Standard trim is cloth, but the higher trims get leatherette seats. The higher trims also feature heated seats. The seats are mostly comfortable. The front row has decent spacing, as you would expect. But the rear row is where things get cramped. Headroom and legroom are compromised, and not exactly ideal for adults. Maybe children and teenagers can fit in. Oh, and it can only seat 4 people.

Being a tiny hatchback, it does not have much room for storage at the back either. The standard cargo capacity is just around 11 cubic feet, which can be ideal for your daily groceries, a couple of suitcases, and maybe a few other things for a weekend trip. The rear seats can be folded in a 60/40-split and they open up to 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space, which can allow for a decent bit of storage. In-cabin storage solutions are impressive, with large cupholders, glove-box, and center console storage.

As it is evident form the table, the rear seats of all of these hatchbacks are quite low on space, making them unsuitable for tall adults over long trips. The only one that can fit adults properly is the Honda Fit. The Fit and the Kia Rio offer the best cargo storage, while the Spark takes a loss here too.

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The Spark is equipped with a 7” screen running on Chevy’s Infotainment System 3. The system is integrated into the dashboard. It is very easy to use and intuitive. Also, it is responsive. It is perhaps one of the best bits about the car in general.

Standard features on offer include AM/FM Radio, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot, two illuminated USB ports. Every trim except the base trim offers SiriusXM radio. There are four speakers available as standard. Also, all the trims except the standard trim offer six speakers.

The 2019 Chevrolet Spark has upgraded from being a rather uninteresting looking car to just the opposite with a compelling design for a budget hatchback. It still looks like a typically entry-level car, however, so don’t expect any onlookers to ogle at your ride. The front fascia sees the two redesigned headlights which look more aggressive and have evolved into a better shape. The grille has also been made wider and bigger. It also has front fog lamps. The higher trims enjoy a chrome surround on the exterior.

The hood is small and slopes into the front fascia. There is a strong line on the side of the car. The rear looks just like you would expect a normal hatchback to look, with an uninteresting design. But there is a rear spoiler to spice things up. The rear door handles are integrated neatly into the rear windows. The LS rides on 15” steel wheels, while the 1LT and 2LT run on 15” silver-painted wheels. ACTIV gets 15” alloy with black contrast inserts. The LS trim comes with halogen projector headlamps. The 1LT and 2LT offer LED DRLs.

All the hatchbacks are tiny and therefore, have tiny dimensions. The Kia Rio has the longest wheelbase and hence, the highest cargo capacity. The Honda Fit has the best design here and looks like a classy urban car. The Ford Fiesta looks the weirdest with an abruptly-ending front fascia and a big front grille.

The Honda Fit is an excellent hatchback. It offers better performance and more power. It also offers one of the most spacious rear rows in this segment. Also, it offers better cargo spacing. It might have slightly lesser fuel economy but has more range due to its higher tank capacity. The Fit might cost a little bit more, but there is no defeating the champ of affordable hatchbacks. It's just the better hatchback overall.

The best part about the Ford Fiesta is the nippy and nimble driving dynamics it offers. It is the more athletic go-to option if you want to enjoy the most out of your driving. But it has a pretty cramped rear row, even more so than the Spark. The Fiesta claims some points back by offering a more spacious cargo capacity. It also offers a better range. This can be a tough call, but we believe the Fiesta has got better looks than the Spark.

The Kia Rio is another excellent choice for a hatchback. It has better performance than the Spark and also drives really well. It costs slightly more, but it has a decent interior with almost the same amount of spacing as the Spark. However, Rio trumps the American hatchback when it comes to cargo storage. Also, the tiny American hatchback cannot beat anyone when it comes to range. The Rio can also be considered as a pretty good alternative to this car.

Final Verdict

The 2019 Chevrolet Spark is for those who are looking for their first car and is new to the world of driving. The compact dimensions and the zippy nature makes the Spar an ideal city hatchback. It also goes easy on the new drivers with its tiny size and its easy handling capabilities. It is economical but it could certainly use a bigger fuel tank and a more spacious interior. If you want practicality, it's better to invest in the Honda Fit and for better driving dynamics, the Ford Fiesta will do. The Spark is not a bad choice, but it's inarguably not the best.

Pros - ["Touchscreen Radio", "Gas mileage"]

Cons - ["No trunk space", "Too many bad sensors"]

This vehicle is state of New York five star from me. It is great ass mileage I've not had any problems with the performance of the vehicle. The only thing that I would change is having more trunk space. I love the upholstery. I love the analytics of the touch screen and being able to change the background. It's very suitable compact car.

Ridiculous ride quality.

Pros - Easy to drive, Fuel efficient.

Cons - Infotainment screen, ride quality, Small rear seats.

Unimpressive infotainment screen. The Chevrolet Spark is my first car. It is very easy to drive but when it comes to comfort, it ain't that good. The rear seats are very cramped especially for tall people like me. I don't prefer rear seats in my Spark. The ride quality is bouncy as well, especially on uneven terrain. Moreover, the infotainment screen is very small and not so bright during dayligh...
