Overview

With over 65 years of experience in producing its iconic sports car, Chevy, in 2020 brings the latest iteration of Corvette Z06 in a top-drop avatar. With killer looks and a powerful engine under the hood, the Z06 convertible takes the game to another level. Like its coupe variant, the 2020 Corvette Z06 convertible packs a lot of power and fun which makes the ride not only fun but also thrilling and theatrical.

Feeling more like a supersonic missile than any regular sports car, it really pushes the boundaries and gives the term a whole new meaning. An unconventional car that gives an unconventional ride and handling experience, enough to make the rider forget about the surroundings and just become one with the furious power lying at the heart of it. With such pedigree, the Vette becomes perfect for getaways and crashing parties.

Buying Advice

To get the best of both worlds, we recommend getting the 3LZ variant as it offers the best interior and performance experience and offers some personalization options to add a personal touch to the ride. The Z07 performance package is also recommended for improved handling capabilities.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Chevrolet carved its own niche by acquainting the Corvette with the American masses. It was amusing to drive and had a ground-breaking V8 motor under the hood to make it move fast. With a drop-top, this car’s cool quotient reaches on a whole new level. Over the years, the Vette has evolved from just an open roadster with a V8 engine to a more sophisticated, track-focused, entry-level sports car with a refined and powerful engine to deliver the best performance in its class. Now a decade into its production, the GM in 2019 introduces a successor to its iconic supercar in a drop-top variant, the Corvette Z06 convertible. With the wind hitting the hairs and rumbling engine note coming from the exhaust into the ears, the Vette puts a big smile on the face after every ride.

Features
7.0/10

The 2019 Corvette Z06 convertible comes with 3 trims, 1LZ, 2LZ, and 3LZ. To make a distinct mark of itself, GM offers this entry-level gas guzzler equipped with a big 6.2L Supercharged V8 engine that produces a massive 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, to go toe-to-toe with most supercars out there and leave them in the dust. To get a better leash on this beast, the Z06 can be opted with a Z07 performance pack that includes carbon-ceramic brakes, adjustable sports-tuned suspension, upgraded tires, and various aerodynamic gizmos that make the car go through air like a hot knife through butter.

The LZ variants reflect the same features as the LT packages on the lower Corvettes. The 1LZ, 2LZ, and 3LZ have similar features to 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT respectively. The base trim doesn't differ much from the others in terms of performance but the higher trims add in more comfort and tech features. The 3LZ allows for a couple of interior packages that brandish the inside of the Corvette with Nappa leather and microfibers.

Engine and Performance
9.9/10

“Unlike the last-generation Z06, this new model feels far more refined and manageable. Sure, it's remarkably powerful, but the throttle is easy to modulate, even if it is a little slow to respond to light inputs.” – Motor1

Engine and Transmission

Under the hood, lies the furious heart of this car which is a 6.2L V8 that churns out a massive 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque which enough to smoke any last decade supercar out there. The burbling engine under the hood produces a sonorous and rich sound while under city speed limits. When taken to the track, it unleashes the beast hidden and thus produces the powerful ear-numbing roar that lets you get your adrenaline fix every time you pin the throttle.

The behemoth engine can be paired with an 8-speed automatic with paddle shifts, though real petrolheads would opt for the 7-speed manual that comes with active rev-matching to make each of your shifts smooth without dropping revs. It lets you truly appreciate the V8 for all its glory, giving the most intense experience you can ever expect out of an American supercar.

When compared to its competitors, the Vette takes the pole position as it has the highest number of horses present under the hood. Other sports roadsters simply fall short of power relative to the Corvette, with the Jaguar SVR Convertible coming the closest with 575 hp. However, there are cars that make use of their power more efficiently. The Porsche 911 aces the segment in this aspect. Its slick PDK transmission allows its subtle power output to give tremendous performance figures.

Acceleration

As soon as the rider puts the pedal to the metal, the monstrous V8 starts rumbling and the horses under the hood give out an amazing amount of thrust. The gas pedal is highly responsive and well-tuned so even a little push to it is enough to make the engine unleash its true power. Unless you are using performance tires, expect a lot of wheelspin when launching the car at full throttle.

The Corvette can leave its more expensive sports roadsters in the rearview mirror if any drag race is supposed to take place. What might surprise you is that the Porsche, which is the least powered of the bunch, comes closest to the Z06 with a quarter-mile time of 11.8 seconds. It is possible due to its slick PDK transmission, lightweight chassis, and a rear-engine configuration that minimizes power losses through the driveshaft.

Braking

The massive brakes on the C7 Corvette Z06 help it quickly decelerate without any loss in control. The brake pedal is responsive and feels easy to modulate. The Z07 package upgrades the discs to carbon-ceramic, making the Z06 Convertible stop from 60 mph within 100 feet. With such impressive braking performance, you always feel like you have a leash on this powerful beast.

Ride and Handling

Once behind the wheel, the ride feels thrilling yet under control. The electronically-assisted steering gets heavier, depending on the driving mode, and offers precise feedback to the driver. Despite being RWD, the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has more than 1g of lateral grip around corners, providing no measure of the tail waggling out of control. The electronically adjustable differential offers the optimum handling capabilities to let even amateur drivers have some fun at the track.

The adjustable suspension of the Z06 can offer a relaxing drive on regular tarmac, absorbing most of the slight bumps on the road. Once on the track, it can be stiffened up to keep consistency in the traction. The adjustable bolsters can fit a driver of any size, so you can keep glued to your seat as the Z06 goes around a chicane. There is plenty of road noise at city speeds which can easily be minimized by the active noise cancellation of the Bose premium audio system.

Fuel Economy
6.3/10

While the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible may be powerful, it doesn't come without some tradeoffs. The humungous 6.2L V8 drinks a lot of fuel and the Corvette ends up at the bottom of the barrel with a combined EPA rating of 18 mpg. An 18.5-gallon fuel tank grants it a decent range, though. So, you don't have to worry about refueling it again and again on a track day.

The smallest engine rules here. Thus, the Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet gives you the most miles per gallon of premium gas. The Merc's SL-class holds pretty well, too. Its adequate fuel economy and a large tank make it ideal for lengthy excursions.

Interior
7.0/10

Seating and Comfort

Despite being a 2-seater, the Vette surprises the rider by offering a spacious and roomy interior with much room to stretch. The car is definitely not for relaxing after a hard day at the office, but the cabin does make the person inside feel comfortable over long hours of driving. The dual-zone climate control works well up to par and, combined with the heated and ventilated seats, offer the perfect temperature inside the car regardless of the weather outside.

The car has well-bolstered seats which feel sturdy are quite comfortable. All thanks to the adjustable steering column and the seats, an ideal driving position becomes easy to find and even a 6 feet tall person will fit inside the cabin without much difficulty. The interior and its quality feels quite improved from the past generation. Leather upholstery and microfiber finishes on the Z06 3LZ make it look a lot more upscale than most other sports cars in this segment.

Infotainment

With aggressive looks and angles incorporated even on the inside, the car’s interior looks like a small spaceship with every control in driver’s reach. The angular-looking dashboard has an 8-inch touchscreen which is large, crisp and vibrant. Also, Chevy has added a hidden compartment behind the screen which can be accessed by pressing a button present near the touchscreen.

The Vette comes equipped with all the features you may need to keep yourself entertained and make the ride more fun. Chevy's MyLink infotainment system is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You have a choice between a 9-speaker Bose sound system or a 10-speaker Bose premium sound system. Although, if we're being honest, there is nothing more enthralling to listen to other than the huge supercharged powerhouse that sits beneath the hood.

Some additional infotainment features include:

  • Bluetooth Streaming audio
  • AUX cable input
  • 2 USB Ports
  • AM/FM/HD Radio
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • Chevrolet Performance Data Recorder
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Proximity Sensing Keyless Entry

Cargo space

Being a convertible does little to restrict the practicality of the Z06, as it has plenty of space to haul cargo. While it may not carry a lot of groceries, there is enough space for a couple of big suitcases even with the roof folded down. The trunk lid is quite ergonomic and can be remotely operated. The small-item storage is diverse and plentiful as well. There is a decent amount of storage space in the center console. The side pockets and cupholders can be used for all types of beverages. A dedicated smartphone stand that supports wireless charging can also be opted for.

None of the sports convertibles in this segment offer the storage capacity of the Vette. The Merc comes the closest, with its 8.5-cubic-feet trunk. The Jag's storage space is hampered by its oblique roofline and a cover that limits the height of the cargo space. Porsche's got its engine in the back, so its frunk is good for a small backpack at most.

Exterior
8.5/10

The 2018 Chevrolet Corvette's exterior is highly stylized, maybe too much, though the interior doesn't have quite as much character” – The Car Connection

Design and Styling

There has been no change in the look of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 from the previous year. That doesn't mean it is not a stunning car to look at. Equipped with HID headlights, it can make its presence known miles before its arrival in the dark. As you shine a light on the beautiful body, its sharp edges with various carbon-fiber accents make it look like it was meant to fly. The fins and spoilers not only look awesome, but they also help with the overall aerodynamics of the car, keeping it stable and grounded at high speeds.

The roof is made of fabric instead of metal to save on weight. It can be put on or off with the touch of a button at speeds of up to 30 mph. While the earlier Corvettes had a sleek and elegant touch, the C7 Corvette Z06 is unashamed to dorn a more aggressive look to flaunt its true nature. If you didn't know any better, you would expect machine guns and missiles to pop out of the body, like a proper Bond villain. Even so, it still carries the tear-drop rear windshield iconic to Z06 Corvette since 1963.

Dimensions and Weight

Kudos to the engineering and designing team for making the Vette so light yet so spacious. The carbon fiber doesn't just make the front fascia of the car look menacing, it also sheds a lot of weight off the panels. The Z06 Corvette has an average length for its class, though its girth and low ground clearance make you think twice before taking it to a crowded street. The wheelbase manages a 50/50 weight distribution, which is part of the reason why the Corvette has such great handling.

The rest of the sports cabriolets in this segment are heavier and bigger than the Vette. The exception is the Porsche 911, which has a smaller wheelbase and a shorter track width. When coupled with a lightweight all-aluminum chassis, the Carrera can utilize the power from its tiny engine with maximum efficiency.

Exterior Features

The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 comes bundled with a host of features:

  • Carbon fiber hood
  • HID Xenon lighting with LED park and turn signals
  • Front curb view camera
  • Z06 nickel-painted aluminum wheels
  • Body-colored carbon fiber removable roof panel
  • Solar Ray light tinted glass

Safety
9.0/10

None of the Corvettes have been tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS for determining their performance during a crash. The Corvette Z06 Convertible can be categorized as a low production sports car. Therefore, it is next to impossible for any federal agency to determine the car's performance during a collision. Still, you can count on the stiff metallic frame to keep the occupants safe in the event of a crash. You won't find a lot of advanced safety features onboard but there are a few systems in place to make the car tamer to the less experienced drivers.

Safety Features

  • Active handling stability control and traction control
  • Performance traction management
  • Rear vision camera

Competition
9.0/10

Corvette Z06 v/s Mercedes-Benz SL550 Roadster

When pitted against the SL550, the Vette gets a tough competition in many segments but rises up as an overall winner. While both the cars are great in their respective roles, the SL550 is slightly more expensive than the Vette but offers great luxurious interiors along with decent engine performance. The Corvette is definitely for those who are speed junkies and want a high-performance car in a low budget. The SL550, on the other hand, is for those who are looking for a comfortable cruise of Route 66, with the wind blowing past the face and plenty of technology to keep safe and connected.

Corvette Z06 v/s Porsche 911

Born out of the legendary Nurburgring, the Porsche 911 does not use brute force to improve its performance. Its twin-turbo flat-six does little to impress the petrolheads that browse for high power V8s in this price range. What it does impress with is how it uses that power to go insanely fast. Its light body and small size throw away any trace of practicality. The rear-engine design gives it the agility to beat the Corvette at a track any day of the week. That is, as long as it is not a drag race. The smaller engine grants the Porsche a better fuel economy, though the comfort of the Vette makes the American a better cruiser.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

A sports car with a powerful engine capable enough to smoke out most of the last decade's supercars out there. A supersonic missile under the skin of a car and now comes with a drop-top, makes the drive even more overwhelming, thrilling and fun. With a beastly V8 under the hood and aggressive looks, the car definitely carves its own place among its rivals. Get behind the wheel and forget about the world, this car says this fact loudly from every speck of it.

2019- Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ)

How fast is the Corvette Z06?

Very. The 2019 Corvette Z06 can go a standstill to 60 mph in 2.95 seconds and complete a quarter-mile drag in 10.9 seconds. On a long straight, the Corvette Z06 can reach a top speed of 205 mph.

What does the Z06 stand for?

During the early 1960s, there was a ban on race-spec coupes by the SCCA. Zora Duntov, Chief Engineer at GM and regarded as the 'Father of Modern Corvettes', knew a ban would not stop people from purchasing performance coupes. Thus, Zora offered an RPO(Regular Production Option) that included six different modifications to increase the car's performance. Hence, the name 'Zora-6' or 'Z06'.

Is Corvette a reliable car?

Yes. Early Corvettes were notorious for breaking down often. Steering troubles and brake failures were especially problematic. Lately, the build quality of the Corvette has greatly improved. JD Power has awarded a respectable score of 84 out of 100 to the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette.

Are Corvettes expensive to maintain?

No. Compared to cars that offer similar performance, going for a Corvette may save you quite a bit of money on maintenance. The average annual cost of maintenance of a Chevrolet Corvette is around $674. To put that in perspective, the same cost for the Audi R8, which is considered a sensible supercar, comes out to be $1,123.
