Overview

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is a fully redesigned compact sedan that gets a fresh new look, three new engines, and many impressive tech features. The 2017 Elantra has improved significantly than the previous generation (2011-2016), with more sophisticated looks on the outside and more refined on the inside. Hyundai keeps the pricing under the radar, making the Elantra even more competitive. The base Elantra starts at just under $18,000 and offers the most desired features in the class.

Hyundai has improved ride quality, making the Elantra a comfortable daily driving car. The Elantra's three new engines include a new base 147 hp 2.0-liter engine, an Eco 128 hp turbocharged 1.4-liter engine, and a sporty 200 hp 1.6-liter turbocharged engine. The acceleration may not be class-leading but is not a big letdown. The 2017 Hyundai Elantra competes with the likes of Toyota Corolla and Kia Forte in the class.

Buying Advice

In spite of the fact that the section level Elantra SE doesn't have a plenitude of standard gear, on the off chance that you include the Popular Equipment bundle you'll get some alluring features. The Popular gear bundle includes stuff, for example, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio and a rearview camera.

Also, if that is insufficient, you can simply move up to the Value Edition, which incorporates blind side checking with raise cross-activity alarm, a cowhide wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats and double zone automatic atmosphere control.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is all new and features a more sophisticated exterior design which the brand has been doing across the lineup. There are new fuel-efficient engine options, popular multimedia features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and more advanced active safety technologies like forward-collision warning and blind-spot monitoring.

The compact Elantra slots below the midsize Sonata and above the subcompact Accent. The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is a front-drive sedan offered in four trim levels that include Eco and new-for-2017 Sport trim. The five-year cost of ownership is estimated at around $21,100, in other words, the 2017 Elantra will cost about $4,200 per year for gas, insurance, repairs, and maintenance.

Features
8.0/10

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is a four-door compact sedan available in four trim levels: SEEcoLimited, and Sport. The Elantra GT hatchback is also available and is reviewed separately. The base price of the 2017 Elantra sedan starts at an MSRP of $17,150 and goes up to $22,350 for the luxury-oriented Elantra Limited.

The base Elantra SE model is short on features, especially if you buy it with a 6-speed manual transmission. It comes standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, 15-inch steel wheels, air-conditioning, full power accessories, cloth upholstery, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a 60/40-split folding rear seatback, and a six-speaker sound system with satellite radio and a CD player. With the SE Automatic variant, you get the Popular Equipment package as standard which adds a 7-inch touch screen, a rearview camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, cruise control, and alloy wheels.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The Elantra Eco returns the best gas mileage of 32 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. That’s better than most vehicles in this class. The Elantra SE and Limited models equipped with the 2.0-liter offer decent fuel economy ratings at 26/36 mpg city/highway with the manual and 29/38 mpg with the automatic transmission. The Elantra Sport gets 26/33 mpg and 24/32 mpg, with the manual and automatic, respectively.

The Eco trim is the most efficient in the Elantra lineup but you'll need to spend at least $20,650 just to own one. The entry-level SE ticks all boxes and is slightly behind in terms of MPG ratings but cost just $17,150.

Interior
7.0/10

The Elantra's interior is the most attractive selling point. It's well laid out, attractive and spacious. The 2017 Elantra sedan seats five and makes good use of space. Both driver and passengers have plenty of room. The rear-seat passengers should find enough space and good visibility. The build quality of the cabin feels sturdy, and the simplified control scheme on the center console being a noteworthy aspect that improves ease of use.

The base trim has cloth upholstery while moving on to higher trim levels will get you Leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. Many of the hard plastic surfaces from past Elantras are gone – replaced with soft-touch, matte, and brushed finishes.

Also, Elantra is the only model which offers a power lift-gate. The liftover height is low and access to the trunk is good. The rear seats are split-folding, which gives you added flexibility.

There's no shortage of door storage, cupholders or other compartments. Just below the center console is a concealable compartment to plug in your phone or keep the sunglasses.

Exterior
6.0/10

Unlike the previous Elantra which boasts a new generation of stylish Hyundais with flamboyant looks, this new Elantra—the sixth-generation model-represents a step away from the curved and detailed design of that fifth-generation car. Like the redesigned Sonata, the lines have been scaled down considerably, with a more sophisticated and composed look.

At the front, Elantra is great with a wider, deeper grille while the boomerang-shaped LED running lights brighten the front end. The C-shaped lines that pulled the rear of the car forward are gone, replaced by more vertical door cuts and a more carefully draped rear roofline, capped by LED taillights.

Ground clearance 5.3" 5.3" 6.7"
Wheelbase 106.3" 106.3" 106.3"

The 2017 Elantra has grown in size, though slightly. It is about an inch more in overall length and in width, the new Elantra improves marginally on the current model's already generous interior space. The car sits on the edge between compact and mid-size, but now the Elantra is a little more firmly in the mid-size category, along with cars like the new Civic.

Exterior Features:

  • A wider, deeper grille
  • Boomerang-shaped LED running lights
  • Vertical door cuts
  • Rear roofline capped by LED taillights
  • LED daytime running lights
  • A trio of LED taillights per side
  • 16-inch wheels
  • Heated side mirrors

Safety
6.0/10

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra received the IIHS' Top Safety Pick+ designation and scored a "Good" safety rating for its crashworthiness and crash mitigation. NHTSA gave the Elantra sedan a four-star overall rating while the GT hatchback received a five-star safety score.

The available Ultimate package, which is available only on the Limited trim, adds adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane departure warning. Key safety features in the Elantra sedan include:

  • Rear Door Child Safety Locks
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Child Seat Anchors
  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Adaptive Headlights
  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Turn Signal Mirrors
  • 2 Front Headrests
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Blind Spot Warning Accident Avoidance System

Competition

2017 Hyundai Elantra Vs 2017 Kia Forte

The Kia Forte's starting price is around $1150 costlier than the 2017 Elantra, despite the fact that both corporate cousins have similar powertrain and power ratings. Kia is a plush category of the family sedans, slightly better inside the Hyundai's Elantra. Since both, cars are mechanically similar, with similar sizes and dimensions, it comes down to personal preference. ??€?€?€?€?€?/p>

For the price point, the Kia Forte is plush and offers slightly better driving dynamics than the Elantra. However, the Hyundai Elantra has evolved into a top-selling daily driving car with low cost of ownership and utmost comfort.

2017 Hyundai Elantra Vs 2017 Toyota Corolla

The 2017 Toyota Corolla is another good choice in the compact car segment. The 2017 Corolla has a lot in common with Elantra, as both cars have well-laid out interiors and plenty of space. They both earn great safety ratings and above-average predicted reliability ratings. For daily driving, both get the job done, however, both have their own trade-offs.

The Elantra is upscale inside and offers tech features that the Corolla does not have, like, Apple Carplay and Android Auto. On the other hand, Toyota packs the Corolla sedan standard with a generous suite of safety features.

Final Verdict

In case you're hoping to capture a bundle of extraordinary features without a sky-high price tag, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra SE trim is the approach. It's very fuel-effective, and when outfitted with the Popular Equipment Package, you get a rearview camera, Bluetooth, and a 7-inch contact screen that offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (two frameworks the 2017 Toyota Corolla doesn't offer) for just under $19,000.This sedan's execution is close to the highest point of the class. The car attempts to inspire with what it has and is by all accounts fruitful in this point. Being less expensive than its adversaries, it offers what the rivals don't.

              Ok car for price

              Pros - {"0": "Low maintenance", "1": "Ample room & trunk space", "2": "Decent mpg"}

Cons - ["Lack of a computer/GPS, slow to speed up", "Headlights get water inside from car wash, car is low to the ground and scrapes the road on dips", "Tire check light issues"]

My Hyundai Elantra gets decent mileage and has ran well until recently when it started to missfire. The headlights get water inside them and have dulled quickly in the sun. The car rides low which has caused issues with it scraping the street on dips. The locking mechanism can be goofy and it randomly self locks.

I like my car...for the most part!!!!

Pros - ["Great on gas", "Easy to handle", "Low maintenance"]

Cons - ["Not fancy; boring looking", "Low down to the ground", "Tight fitting in the back for passengers"]

I like my 2017 Hyundai Elantra. Its economical on gas and not a bad looking vehicle. The interior is nice and the ride is smooth for the most part. It is a modest vehicle but not flashy by no means.

My Hyundai is the best choice I cld have went with

Pros - ["It's got plenty of room", "Good gas mileage"]

Cons - ["Trunk is small", "Needs a little more horsepower"]

My Hyundai has been an extremely good vehicle. It gets great gas mileage I travel for work. So I put slot of miles on it and it does great. It needs a little more horsepower when goin up big mountains or something like that. But overall it's great
