Overview

Thinking of buying the 2017 Nissan Sentra is simply a no-brainer as this compact sedan stands out in its class for its spacious interior and cavernous cargo. This Nissan's compact sedan rivals some of the midsize models, thanks to the rear seat with loads of headroom and legroom, and the cargo capacity is nearly as much as in some full-size models. Moreover, the favorable pricing that Sentra has, ranging from $16,990 up to $21,990, is something you will love to drive.

Last year Nissan revamped the interior with more classy materials and desirable standard features and for 2017, the Sentra adds a new SR Turbo trim level to spice things up. Equipped with the 188-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter engine from the Nissan Juke crossover, Sentra SR Turbo has a sport-tuned suspension, reworked steering, and upgraded front brakes. Still, it's always recommended to check out other compact sedans with different USPs to find the most favorable option. We have a top-rated Toyota Corolla, redesigned 2017 Hyundai Elantra, and a feature-packed Kia Forte.

Buying Advice

The Sentra is a well-equipped midsize sedan, it has everything a family sedan offers at an
affordable price as well. But instead of going for the base model go for the SV trim as it has both
CVT transmission with upgraded infotainment. If you have some extra cash reserved go for the

SR or the SR turbo, as they are not just sportier but are way more functional and versatile as
well.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

After the 2016 refresh, the Nissan Sentra is mostly unchanged this year. The 2017 Sentra gets a Premium Technology package available for the SR and SL trims, a quieter cabin, and redesigned center console that offers more storage space. The new Sentra SR Turbo and the first Sentra NISMO (reviewed separately) join the 2017 Nissan lineup.

The Nissan Sentra competes in the popular compact class and sits above subcompact Versa but below the midsize Altima and semi-premium Maxima sedans. The Sentra has been Nissan's third best-selling model after Altima and Rogue. The estimated five-year cost of ownership for gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs for the 2017 Sentra is $24,525. That's slightly above average for the class.

Features
8.0/10

The 2017 Nissan Sentra is a five-passenger compact sedan offered in S, SV, SR, SR Turbo, and SL trim levels. The entry-level Sentra S starts at a base price of $16,990 with the manual transmission and $17,990 for the automatic. The popular SV trim adds features like standard Siri Eyes, meter display with chrome accents, and Advanced Drive-Assist with a 5.0-inch display, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and shift knob, and more. The SV will cost you $18,790 for the automatic.

The sporty Sentra SR begins at $19,990 and adds LED low beam projector headlights with LED accents, lower body side sill extensions, rear spoiler with integrated LED brake light, fog lights, chrome exhaust finisher, unique design 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 205/50R17 all-season tires, rear disc brakes, sport interior trim, premium sport cloth seats, driver's seatback pocket, heated front seats, heated outside mirrors with LED turn signals and SR badge.

Based on the popular Sentra SR trim level, the new SR Turbo maintains the SR's unique sporty exterior, interior, and wheel treatments. At the heart of 2017, SR Turbo is its new 1.6-liter Direct Injection Gasoline turbocharged engine rated at 188 horsepower – 64 more horsepower and 52 more lb-ft of torque than the non-turbo 2017 Sentra SR grade's 1.8-liter powerplant.

A number of option packages are available, including a new Premium Technology Package for SR and SL grades. Other available packages are the Style Package (S and SV), Driver's Assist Package (SV and SR), and All-Weather Package (SV).

We Recommend

The SV trim is the most popular trim level as it has a number of convenience features, including push-button start, an infotainment system, Siri Eyes Free, and Bluetooth streaming audio. We recommend the SV as the most value-for-money Sentra model.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10

The base 2017 Sentra with a six-speed manual transmission gets EPA-rated Fuel Economy ratings of 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The gas mileage improves to 29/37 mpg city/highway with the CVT. The 188-horsepower turbocharged engine in the SR Turbo gets an EPA-estimated 27/33 mpg city/highway with the CVT, and 26/32 mpg with the manual transmission.

Interior
6.5/10

“The cabin's design is nothing fancy, but the quality of both materials and construction is good.”- Edmunds

2017 Sentra Seating and Comfort

The 2017 Nissan Sentra offers an interior that's bigger than seems possible, simply the roomiest in the class. Both front and rear seats offer generous Head- and legroom even for taller passengers. With comfortable seating for five, the 2017 Sentra sedan has a standard cloth upholstery while premium cloth, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat are available.

The cabin is simple and functional, and with the 2016 refresh, the interior received more tech and upscale quality. The new SR Turbo gets similar sporty interior cues as the SR grade. The Sentra has a 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel with its odd-looking triangular design, a 6-way manual driver’s seat, and a 4-way manual passenger seat, and a non-foldable rear seat with a center arm-rest.

2017 Sentra Infotainment System

Other noteworthy strengths of the 2017 Sentra's interior include the NissanConnect infotainment system that comes with a 5.8-inch touchscreen display. The touchscreen's graphics are clear and simple menus make it easy to use. However, it is one of the smallest screens in its class.

The entry-level Sentra has a standard four-speaker audio system, a USB port, and Bluetooth for phone calls. Every trim is available with either a 5- or 5.8-inch display. Other available features include dual-zone automatic climate control, navigation, smartphone app integration, voice recognition, and an eight-speaker Bose premium audio system.

2017 Sentra Cargo volume

The Sentra's trunk is spacious, with 15.1 cubic feet of cargo capacity. It has a standard 60/40-split rear seat which expands cargo capacity further to haul larger items. The lift-over height is reasonable to not hurt your back, however, the 2017 Elantra is the only one to offer a power-lift gate in the segment.

There's no shortage of small storage options which include door storage, cupholders all-around. For 2017, Nissan has also redesigned Sentra's center console to improve the storage space.

“Nissan’s attractive wheel designs help the Sentra look sleeker than most compacts and are a good match to the car’s smoothly sculpted sheet metal, which manages to hold your attention without being flashy or overdone.”-Kelley Blue Book

2017 Sentra Styling, Dimension and Weight

The 2017 Sentra carries over the extensive exterior redesign from one year ago. Like the other upscale Nissan models, the Sentra reflects Nissan's new design language first introduced on the Murano crossover. With a sense of sportiness, the sedan offers refined proportions. The 2017 Sentra is available for sale in nine colors – Red Alert, Brilliant Silver, Super Black, Aspen White (premium charge), Gun Metallic, Graphite Blue, Cayenne Red, Deep Blue Pearl, and Fresh Powder.

Key features of the Sentra exterior include a bold front fascia, grille, fenders, hood, and signature boomerang-shaped headlights. LED low-beam headlights with LED signature accents are offered on Sentra SR and Sentra SL. In the rear, the boomerang-shaped taillights add a more premium appearance.

Safety
9.3/10

The 2017 Nissan Sentra sedan has a four out of five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and is awarded a 2017 Top Safety Pick by the IIHS. The 2017 Sentra earned the top score of Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in all five test categories and a Superior rating for its optional front crash prevention. A Poor rating for its headlights prevented it from earning Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS.

The Sentra has no standard active safety features. Available safety features include a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning with automatic braking, and adaptive cruise control.

  • Nissan Advanced Air Bag System with dual-stage supplemental front airbags with seat belt sensors and occupant-classification sensor

2017 Nissan Sentra Vs 2017 Kia Forte

The Kia Forte LX starts at $17,600 which is around $600 more than the Sentra. The Forte gets you a more powerful base engine rated at  147hp and delivers much better driving dynamics. Some may complain of Forte's ride quality, but that can be ignored considering ample multi-media features and an upscale cabin.

Though the Kia Forte does not have stand-out strengths, for the price it comes fully loaded with all desired features and safety equipment. Compared to the Sentra the Kia is pretty much the same in exterior and interior dimensions as well as the boot space. There is not much difference in the fuel economy as well. We recommend going for Kia Forte if you are looking for a base model, else stick with the Nissan Sentra.

2017 Nissan Sentra Vs 2017 Toyota Corolla

The 2017 Sentra stands out from the rest for its exceptional boot space and interior roominess. However, the ride quality is comfortable and fuel-economy average, the 2017 Toyota Corolla is the better choice.

The 2017 Toyota Corolla has more standard active safety features, compared to none in the Sentra sedan. Also, Corolla's infotainment system uses a vivid display that surpasses even Sentra's upgraded systems.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Nissan Sentra is a fine car. While it has an above-average predicted reliability rating and a spacious interior, the base engine is weak. Also, the base model skips active safety equipment, and it has a high estimated ownership cost.

              Just Ok not the best

Pros - ["Gas mileage", "Rear view camera"]

Cons - ["Size is too small", "Too low to the ground"]

I have had this car for a year and have had to replace several things. I had to replace the battery, starter, serpentine belts. I like the Good gas mileage. The car just needs more space. The car also needs a bigger trunk.

Not a car for someone who can't afford repairs

Pros - ["It's great on gas mileage, City or highway.", "Very comfortable seats.", "I love the visibility out all sides. No blind spots."]

Cons - ["Clunky transmission especially on reverse and up/down even slight inclines. The console lid has never stayed on; Nissan refused to fix or replace it. The rubber seals around the doors and the trunk came off the tracks and hang loose. So I can't wash my car except with a bucket because everything leaks. Nissan also refused to repair/fix. Lastly, the trunk lid never has opened all the way, only about a foot above the frame. So I have to manually push up which is difficult with my age and health conditions. Again, Nissan refused to repair/fix.", "The cost of repairs beyond comparable brands is ridiculous.", "I've only had this car 4 years 67000 miles. The transmission is starting to go out. Also the headliner has been saggy and puckered since day one."]

I absolutely love the gas mileage I've gotten on both city and highway especially with climbing gas prices. The car is very comfortable for my special needs grandson I'm raising and myself. Service is useless though. I've had three major issues with my car from day one that Nissan refused to resolve. The local dealer in Alvin, TX lied multiple times that they were getting issues resolved but neve...

              Would not buy again

Pros - ["Comfortable seats", "Cold air conditioning", "Good sound system"]

Cons - ["It doesn't accelerate properly", "Power locks only work on 3 doors", "Bluetooth connection to phone doesn't always work"]

I can't wait to get rid of this car - the thing that bugs me the most about it is that when you accelerate, the engine will rev but the speed will not change. I've never had a car that had this problem so severely.
