Overview

The 2017 Nissan Versa is available in four trims and has a base sale price of $11,990. These trims include S, S Plus, SV, and SL. It is also available in hatchback form known as Versa Note that is priced at $15,480. It continues to get a 1.6L four-cylinder engine that produces 109 hp and 107 lb-ft. of torque. This engine is definitely not known for its acceleration but instead for its gas mileage. With the CVT transmission, the Versa has a combined mileage of 34 MPG.

Just like its performance, even the Versa's interior is not that alluring and also offers fewer standard features than its rivals. However, it gains major points for its spacious cabin and class-leading trunk volume. It also has the lowest ownership costs and has good resale value. But in terms of safety, its ratings are average and also lack modern safety features. In the subcompact segment, it goes against the Ford Fiesta, the Kia Rio, and the Toyota Yaris iA.

Buying Advice

We prefer the SV trim as it packs a decent list of features. This trim adds remote trunk release, 6-way manually-adjustable driver's seat, 60/40 split-folding seats, a driver's armrest, keyless entry with illuminated entry, and power door and locks. We also recommend the optional SV Special Edition package that adds an extra $500 to the price tag.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Though it may accommodate big and tall passengers, the Versa is undeniably slow in a straight line- MotorTrend

The Nissan Versa lost its credibility over the years due to its poor driving dynamics, weak engine, and lack of modern features. However, its low starting price has encouraged a lot of Americans to buy this car and hence, it still survives on the American roads. There are some niceties of the Versa as well such as a roomy cabin and class-leading trunk volume.

Although it has a few downsides, one of the foremost advantages of owning the Versa is low ownership costs. Its maintenance costs are very less but its repair costs are on par with its rivals. Moreover, it depreciates less over the years than its rivals thanks to its good resale value. The true cost to own it is nearly $5,400 per year and the average cost per mile is $0.36.

Features
5.0/10

Aside from interior volume, the Versa doesn't offer many features that help it stand out- Autotrader

Four trims are offered for the Nissan Versa. These include S, S Plus, SV, and SL. Pricing for these trims starts from $11,990 and it ranges up to $17,280, plus an $835 destination fee. Transmission choices for the Versa include a 5-speed manual, a 4-speed automatic, and a CVT whereas FWD configuration is standard.

When it comes to features, the Versa has fewer standard features than its rivals. New for this year is the $500 SV Special Edition package that adds fog lights, a 5-inch display, SiriusXM, 15-inch alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel, Bluetooth streaming, hands-free text messaging, and a rearview camera. This package is exclusive to the SV trim only.

We Recommend

We prefer the SV trim as it packs a decent list of features. This trim adds remote trunk release, 6-way manually-adjustable driver's seat, 60/40 split-folding seats, a driver's armrest, keyless entry with illuminated entry, and power door and locks. We also recommend the optional SV Special Edition package that adds an extra $500 to the price tag.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

There's a big penalty for picking the stick shift versa, but the CVT is pretty thrifty- The Car Connection

The Nissan Versa is one of the cars in its class to offer competitive fuel economy. The EPA-estimated MPG figures are 27 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on a highway, and 30 MPG combined. With the automatic transmission, the fuel economy drops down by 1 MPG. The ratings are the best with the CVT as it returns 31 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on a highway, and 34 MPG combined.

Therefore, the Versa returns impressive fuel economy despite housing a small fuel tank that measures 10.8 gallons in size. Owing to this fuel tank, it delivers 340 miles with the manual transmission and 329 miles with the automatic transmission. When using a CVT transmission, the Versa can drive up to 378 miles, which is really impressive.

Models 2017 Nissan Versa 2017 Toyota Yaris iA 2017 Ford Fiesta 2017 Kia Rio

Range (City/Highway/Combined; Miles) 292/389/340 348/452/400 335/434/384 308/410/359

From the above table, it is evident that the Toyota Yaris iA boasts the best fuel economy in this competition while the Versa takes second place. The fuel ratings of the Ford Fiesta and the Kia Rio are almost the same as the Versa but the former's large tank contributes to a better driving range.

Interior
6.0/10

Tall buyers on a budget will find much to like in the modestly-priced Versa, which offers a cavernous cabin- Left Lane News

2017 Nissan Versa Seating and Comfort

The interior of the Nissan Versa feels cheap and everything in here is hard. The headliner is like fuzzy cardboard and the carpets are like a trunk liner. This five-seater sedan gets cloth upholstery as standard. Speaking of front-seat comfort, they are a bit on the firm side and also lack under-thigh support. Therefore, this car is not perfect for long journeys. Both these seats are manually adjustable but do not come with heated or ventilated functions.

The leather steering wheel is only tilt-adjustable and therefore, it is tough to find the right driving position. One thing where the Versa excels over its rivals is passenger space. Both the rows have ample head and legroom. The seating position at the back is good and the rear seats have a good recline angle. The tidier dimensions of the Versa will allow only two adults to be comfortably seated at the back though it is a five-seater.

Among its rivals, the Ford Fiesta offers the least passenger space in the rear row due to its short wheelbase. Therefore, long-legged people will surely feel uncomfortable. The Toyota Yaris iA also offers less rear space than the Versa but it's decent but the Kia Rio trades off rear-seat space for the best front-seat space in this competition.

2017 Nissan Versa Infotainment System

For a car whose starting price is almost $12,000, don't expect many technological features. The S and S Plus trims come with only AM/FM radio and Bluetooth connectivity. The SV trim adds a USB port and audio auxiliary input to the list but is available with a 5-inch screen option. This trim also adds a small multi-function driver's display while the gauge cluster is electroluminescent.

The top-most SL trim comes with a 5.8-inch touchscreen NissanConnect system that also adds SiriusXM and a voice-command navigation system. Regardless of trim levels, a 4-speaker stereo is standard. The controls are straightforward and mostly simple. The presence of a tuning knob for the radio could be better. Also, the cheap-feeling climate control knobs have hard-to-read markings.

2017 Nissan Versa Interior Features

The main interior features of the Nissan Versa are mentioned below:

  • Tilt-adjustable multi-function leather steering wheel
  • Manually adjustable front cloth seats
  • Proximity keyless entry
  • Push-button start
  • 5.8-inch touchscreen display
  • 4-speaker stereo
  • SiriusXM
  • Voice command navigation system
  • Alloy shift knob

2017 Nissan Versa Cargo Volume

Another area where the Nissan Versa impresses is its cargo capacity. It offers a trunk volume of 14.9 cubic feet, which is the best in its class. It's more than enough to store three large luggage bags. The SV and SL trim come with split-folding rear seats that can increase cargo space by some amount. This feature allows you to store long items in the trunk.

However, the seats don't fold flat but that's completely fine. The shape of the trunk is good to store more items. The loading lip is a bit higher than its rivals. When it comes to interior storage, the glovebox is small and is good to store only your small important items. There are dual cupholders present upfront and a small cubby storage space is available to keep your phone.

The cargo capacities of the Toyota Yaris iA and the Kia Rio are almost the same but can store only two large bags. On the flip side, the Ford Fiesta offers the least cargo space. therefore, it can store only three small duffel bags. Overall, the Versa is the most practical sedan in the subcompact segment and is a perfect car for a weekend getaway.

Exterior
6.4/10

The 2017 Versa is actually a pretty nice-looking little sedan, thanks to the strong family resemblance it has to the Nissan Sentra and Altima- Kelly Blue Book

2017 Nissan Versa Dimensions and Weight

There are no changes made to the exterior styling of the Nissan Versa. Upfront, you get a black grille with chrome surround flanked by headlights on either side. These headlights are halogen across the lineup. Down below, you also fog lamps, which are only available on the top-end SL trim. The Versa sits on 15-inch steel wheels while the higher trims get 16-inch aluminum wheels.

The Versa has a ground clearance of 6.8 inches which is pretty high for a subcompact sedan. Therefore, it can easily ride over those high bumps. Its wheelbase measures 102.4 inches, which is the widest in its segment. This is the reason it has more rear legroom than its class rivals. At the back, the design is pretty much simple and rounds off with LED taillights.

The ground clearance and wheelbase of the Toyota Yaris iA and the Kia Rio are exactly the same and yet, the former offers slightly more rear legroom. On the contrary, the Rio dominates the Yaris in terms of front passenger space. On the other hand, the Ford Fiesta has the shortest wheelbase here. Hence, is rear row feels cramped for adults.

2017 Nissan Versa Exterior Features

Some main exterior features of the Nissan Versa include -

  • Halogen headlights
  • LED taillights
  • Front fog lights
  • Exterior entry lights
  • Manual-folding exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals
  • Chrome door handles
  • Black grille with chrome accents
  • Black window trim
  • Rear decklid
  • 15 & 16-inch wheels

Safety
8.4/10

Small cars rarely fare as well as big cars in crash tests, and the 2017 Nissan Versa is no exception- The Car Connection

Only the front crash and rollover tests were conducted by NHTSA while the side-impact test was neglected. The Versa scored 4 stars both for the front crash test and rollover crash test. For its crashworthiness, it received 'Good' ratings from IIHS except for the driver's side crash test for which it for 'Poor' ratings.

The safety ratings obtained by the Versa are not that impressive but are decent enough to call it a safe vehicle. For enhanced safety of passengers, a total of six airbags are installed in its cabin. The Versa is lackluster when it comes to safety features. Only a rearview camera is available in the Versa.

Competition
6.0/10

2017 Nissan Versa vs 2017 Kia Rio

For a compact sedan, the Kia Rio is priced slightly higher but its engine makes the most power in its class. As a result, its performance factor is better than the Versa. In terms of fuel economy, the Versa is more efficient. Inside, its rear row lacks enough legroom for adults while its trunk volume is also a bit less. However, its UVO infotainment setup is user-friendly, unlike the Versa. When it comes to safety, the Rio's ratings are decent but lack advanced safeties like the Versa.

2017 Nissan Versa vs 2017 Toyota Yaris iA

The Toyota Yaris iA is priced at $4,000 more than the Versa. Unlike the Versa, the Yaris is available in just one trim level. So, there are no choices for you. Its ride and handling are much better than the Versa. Moreover, it is the most fuel-efficient car in this segment. However, it offers slightly less passenger space and trunk volume than the Versa. The Yaris iA is the safest sedan in its segment as it is the 'Top Safety Pick' from IIHS and also adds a low-speed pre-collision safety system.

2017 Nissan Versa vs 2017 Ford Fiesta

Priced at $13,660, the Ford Fiesta makes 11 horses more than the Versa, and hence, its acceleration is better. It is also known for its nimble handling but it is less fuel-efficient than the Versa. The Fiesta's rear seats are cramped and are not adult-friendly while its trunk volume is the least in this competition. In terms of safety, the Fiesta's ratings are not that impressive but it comes with rear parking sensors, which comes in handy for those inexperienced drivers.

Final Verdict

The Nissan Versa is the most affordable car in its class but its ranks at the bottom due to its bad driving dynamics, weak engine, and cheapy interiors. If you are after decent passenger space and cargo room for your small car dollar, the Versa should be given your immediate attention.
