Overview

The Nissan GT-R is built on legendary chassis. It made waves when it initially debuted on the sports car scene in 2009, and it continues to do so now. While keeping the original GT-R's performance, the 2017 Nissan GT-R's newest edition has built upon it further with more power, a mild facelift, and refined interiors.

The 2017 Nissan GT-R features a 3.8L DOHC Twin Turbo V6 engine that chugs out an impressive 565 hp and 467 lb-ft of torque which is 20 hp more than the previous iteration. The hardcore Nismo trim is tuned to produces 700hp and comes at a price of around $174,990. The 2017 GT-R can get from 0-60 mph in just 2.9 seconds.

Buying Advice

Of the three variants available, the Track Edition priced relatively reasonably at $127,990 is by far the best bet of the lot and certainly worth the money spent. The addition of select features from the top-of-the-line Nismo version get you the feel of an authentic ready-to-race machine, with the added advantage of everyday luxuries such as dual-zone climate control and a sweet sounding Bose audio system with active noise cancellation.

Fuel Economy
7.7/10

The Nissan is slightly underwhelming in terms of fuel efficiency, with a mere 16 mpg within the city and an on-par figure of 22 mpg on the highway, and a combined 18 mpg. The 2017 GT-R comes with a large 19.5-gallon fuel tank, which gives it a range of around 470 miles.

Interior
7.7/10

"Much improved interior materials team with active noise cancellation and a usable rear seat to make the GT-R an almost civil long-distance cruiser." - The Car Connection

2017 Nissan GT-R Seating and Comfort

The 2017 Nissan GT-R sees some minor upgrades to the interior. The dash has been revamped with Nappa leather covering and fewer physical buttons. The cabin feels more lavish and premium than previous trims even though there are only a few changes. The addition of paddle shifters to the back of the steering wheel makes it more in tune with its sports car characteristics. There are also plenty of features that have been added to the roster of the 2017 Nissan GT-R.

In most sports vehicles, four full-fledged seats are rare, and the GT-R excels in this area. Although the back seats aren't the best in the class, the GT-R's ability to accommodate four people makes it a better grand tourer than most of its rivals, with the exception of the Porsche 911 Turbo. The car comes standard with leather-trimmed front seats that are rather comfy, however it should be noted that the back seats are set in place and non-adjustable. Although the front seats are motorised, the heated seat option is only available on the driver's side.

Deep as the trunk is, the high lift coupled with the confined opening on the cargo door does make loading stuff in slightly cumbersome.

Exterior
7.7/10

"The 2017 Nissan GT-R gets a minor styling update, but it's still distinctively Japanese and almost restrained for the exotic car it is." - The Car Connection

The 2017 GT-R sees the addition of the Nissan's "V-Motion" grille. The emphasis on aerodynamic is evident with the revised front lip spoiler and bumper design which adds more downforce. To enhance airflow, the sills on the sides are pushed outward. The rear end receives new bodywork, including functional vents next to the quad exhaust tips and a raised beltline to make the car appear broader.

Nissan comes standard with 20 inch forged aluminum alloy wheels that feature a sleek and fresh design. The front wheels of the GT-R Coupe come with 9.5 X 20 inch wheels, while the rear wheels feature larger 10.5 X 20 inch wheels that plant the car firmly to the road. The GT-R also sports Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT600 DSST CTT tires as standard.

2017 Acura NSX vs 2017 Nissan GT-R Coupe

One of its closest competitors, the Acura NSX trumps the GT-R Coupe on many fronts. The Acura NSX offers more power than the GT-R as well as a compelling driving experience. The NSX is also faster and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 2.7 seconds compared to 2.9 seconds for the GTR But when it comes to the price, the Acura NSX is almost $40,000 more than the Nissan GTR.

2017 Audi R8 vs 2017 Nissan GT-R Coupe

The R8 adds a sophisticated touch of style and elegance to the GT-R, which is more focused on performance. The 2017 Audi R8 exudes German elegance and precision handling, albeit its slower performance is due to its heavier weight. In comparison to the GT-dials, R's the Virtual Cockpit is far more appealing to the eye. The Audi does, however, charge a significant premium above the Nissan.

2017 Porsche 911 Turbo vs 2017 Nissan GT-R Coupe

Both the 911 Turbo and the GT-R are quite fast. The 911, on the other hand, is much lighter than the GT-R, allowing it to go swiftly on the road or on the track. The 911 also comes standard with extra safety measures, such as a multi-collision prevention system that helps avoid subsequent accidents in the event of a rear-end collision. The Nissan GT-R, in comparison, is much cheaper than the Porsche.

Final Verdict

The Nissan GT has been the king of the hill for a while now, ever since it zoomed its way on the automotive scene way back in 2009 and into arduous sports car fans' hearts and continues to do so in it's latest avatar. With it's upgraded interiors, more powerful engine and the option to switch to beast mode with it's highest Nismo trim, the GT-R Coupe continues to be the track-conquering machine that it was originally intended to be.

It may have a bit of competition coming it's way though, in the form of the Acura NSX and the legendary 911 Turbo, which ekes the GT-R out in terms of everyday drivability and handling. There's no doubt, however, that the Nissan GT-R is here to stay. Nissan's engineers seem to have hit the sweet spot by bridging what was the great comfort-performance divide with this track-worthy version of the car.
