Overview

The 2017 Ford Mustang has retained its classy pony car looks but comes with a few modern touches to keep it fresh and up-to-date. The 2017 Mustang gets the much-awaited SYNC3 infotainment system that also adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Mustang for 2017 starts at $25,185 and gets three engine choices the base being a 300 hp, V6 engine, the Mustang EcoBoost getting 310 hp, turbocharged inline-4 engine, and the Mustang GT is powered by the 526 hp, V8 engine.

The V6 engine now feels old, the turbo-four is the new hotshot, while the V8 remains the cream of the Mustang's engine lineup. Depending upon the engine you chose the ride and handling vary a bit but as standard, it is among the best in the segment.  Having said that, the 2017 Ford Mustang even after not having advanced safety features scored top ratings in the NHTSA crash tests.

Buying Advice

Suggesting one particular trim for the 2017 Mustang is tricky due to the different engine choices nevertheless we will try to point you to the best bang for the buck trim in the Mustang lineup. Looking at the trim table it is evident that the EcoBoost Premium trim that starts at $30,195 is the best bet. It comes with a frugal yet powerful turbo-four engine, advanced driver-assist features, better seating setup, and unlocks Pony Package and few other exterior enhancement packages. The EcoBoost Premium trim commands a steep five grand premium over the base trim but the better engine and more driver-aids are worth the extra money.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2017 Ford Mustang is a carryover model but gets a new SYNC3 infotainment system that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2017 Mustang starts at $25,185, one grand premium over last year's Mustang. The 2017 Mustang as usual gets three engine options a V6 in the base trim, turbo-four in the EcoBoost trims, and a V8 engine in the GT trims. A six-speed manual is the one to go for as the six-speed automatic isn't available in all the trims and will at least rob away one-tenth of a second from the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile timing.

The cabin of the Ford Mustang will bring back nostalgia as it has retained the retro design theme. The front seats are comfortable and offer a lot of choices for seats while the rear seats are cramped and not suited for adults. The saving grace is the cargo space which is better than most of the rivals. Speaking of the rivals, the 2017 Ford Mustang locks its horns with the likes of Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro, and Nissan 370Z.

Features
9.0/10

The 2017 Ford Mustang is offered in five trim levels and two body styles. The trim level options include V6, EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, and GT Premium while the body style options include fastback and convertible. The V6 trim starts at $25,185 and is powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine and offers all the usual features generally seen in the segment. The next in line is the EcoBoost trim that starts at $26,195 and replaces the V6 with a more powerful turbo-four engine. The EcoBoost Premium trim starts at $30,195 and shares the same engine and features from the EcoBoost trim while adds features like leather-trimmed seats, a better sound system, and driver-assist features.

The other two trim are the ones that come with the 5.0-liter V8 engine and the first one in the line is the GT trim that starts at $33,195 and the top-end trim is the GT Premium that costs $37,195. The GT trim shares the features of the EcoBoost trim and adds performance upgrades while the GT Premium shares the features list from the EcoBoost Premium trim and adds more creature comfort features, the latest SYNC3 infotainment, and a bigger touchscreen. That said, there is a choice of manual and automatic transmission while the RWD is standard on the 2017 Mustang.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

As per the EPA estimates, the 2017 Ford Mustang returns 18 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined. Opting for the turbo-four engine sees a rise in fuel economy figures and the Mustang returns 3 mpg more in both the city and on the highway. While the most powerful V8-engine powered Mustang returns 14 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. That said, a 16-gallon fuel tank is standard on the 2017 Mustang which is less for the segment thus requiring frequent gas fillups.

All the rivals offer better gas mileage compared to the Mustang. While the Camaro that gets a smaller capacity turbo-four engine returns the best gas mileage which is 2 mpg more in the city and 3 mpg more on the highway compared to the Mustang. Another noteworthy fact is the gas mileage of the Dodge Challenger powered by a V6 is similar to what Camaro returns on the highway and combined while the Challenger returns 1 mpg less in the city compared to the Camaro.

Interior

“The front seats are comfortable and supportive, with ample head- and legroom for taller drivers. Opting for the available sport seats adds extra hip-hugging support, which comes in handy on twisting roads." -cars.usnews

2017 Ford Mustang Seating and Comfort

The 2017 Ford Mustang's cabin is a perfect amalgamation of classic and contemporary. You will love the way how Ford has managed to keep the retro cabin design of the Mustang intact without making it feel outdated. Overall the material used is of good quality and we didn't find any hard-touch plastics at prominent places. However, one thing to note is that the smaller touchscreen unit comes with physical control and knobs that get overwhelming to use and makes the center console look busy.  The front visibility is great and with some height adjustment you can even see the bonnet but the coupe-like design and rear headrest severely restrict the rear visibility.

The 2017 Mustang offers seating for four, but the rear seats are best suited for small kids and toddlers only. The front seats on the other hand are the real deal here. They are comfortable, supportive, and accommodative for all-size adults while those who like driving aggressively can opt for the optional Recaro seats which will hold you well and prevent you from sliding out while attacking the corners. Although if you go for the Recaro seats then you have to lose the power adjustment and heating and ventilation function.

The Nissan 370Z among all only offers seating for two while the Dodge Challenger offers the highest seating for up to five passengers. In terms of cabin space, there is no match to how spacious the Dodge Challenger is in both the rows compared to the Mustang or for that matter the Camaro. This can be well understood from the fact that the Challenger is 9.6-inches longer and sits on a 9.1-inches longer wheelbase compared to the Mustang.

2017 Ford Mustang Infotainment System

The 2017 Ford Mustang gets a 4.2-inch SYNC infotainment system. The smaller screen is mediocre for the most part and looks cheap. The standard features that tag along with the infotainment include a CD player, six-speaker sound system, USB ports, Bluetooth, etc. For this year Ford has given a small respite in the form of an 8-inch touchscreen that runs on the all-new SYNC3 interface. The new interface is slick to use and very easy to navigate. The screen quality is brilliant and so is the touch response. Other upgrades with this infotainment include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, navigation, a 12-speaker Shaker sound system, SiriusXM, and a few more.

Interior Features:

  • Air conditioning
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Tilt and telescoping steering column
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Available dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Available heated and ventilated front seats
  • Available Recaro sports seats

2017 Ford Mustang Cargo Capacity

The 2017 Ford Mustang offers 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space in its trunk. The Mustang convertible on the other hand offers around 11.4 cubic feet. That said, the Mustang coupe's rear seatback can be folded to liberate more space.

2017 Ford Mustang Dimensions and Weight

The exterior of the 2017 Ford Mustang was last redesigned two years back and now feels dated. Although the exterior just like the interior design strikes a fine balance between classic and contemporary. All the design cues from the older Mustang are cleverly incorporated in the new and sleeker profile. Every design element has been purposely retained and executed to aid the dynamics of the Mustang.

Move to the sides and you would see the fastback styling still present on the Mustang with a straight beltline running through the front fenders and merging at the rear ones. Dimensionally it is 54.4-inches tall and 75.4-inches wide while it sits on a 107.1-inches of wheelbase. Moving to the rear, not much has been changed here with the similar brake light setup and dual-exhaust tips seen on the higher models.

No doubt, the Dodge Challenger is the most spacious muscle car among all and it all boils down to its massive 197.9-inches of length, 57.5-inches of height, and a massive 116.2-inches of wheelbase. Compared to it the Mustang is 9.6-inches smaller, 3.1-inches shorter, and sits on a 9.1-inches shorter wheelbase.

Safety
8.0/10

The 2017 Ford Mustang lacks a lot of advanced safety features yet it managed to score brilliantly in the crash-test ratings. The NHTSA gave a perfect score of five stars to the 2017 Ford Mustang in the overall safety ratings, front crash, side crash, and rollover mitigation. The IIHS gave the 2017 Ford Mustang the highest rating of 'Good' in four out of five parameters while the driver-side front overlap crash test was rated as the second-best 'Acceptable'. However, the ease of use of LATCH in the Mustang was rated the second-lowest 'Marginal' rating.

Safety Features:

  • AdvanceTrac Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Side Impact Beams
  • Rearview Camera
  • Available adaptive cruise control
  • Available blind-spot monitoring system
  • Available forward-collision warning
  • Available rear cross-traffic alert

Competition
9.0/10

2017 Ford Mustang vs 2017 Dodge Challenger

The 2017 Dodge Challenger is around two grand expensive than the Mustang but for the money, it gets a much better 8-speed automatic, a more powerful engine, and better gas mileage. Although the Dodge Challenger remains slower in the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile runs compared to the Mustang. The Dodge Challenger is dimensionally bigger than the Mustang so it has better cabin space, adult-friendly rear seats, and a bigger boot.

That said, the Challenger due to its longer length is a bit cumbersome to maneuver in tight spaces. Also, the Challenger isn't as athletic as the Mustang. So you have to determine your needs and priorities to chose between the two as each one of them has its own hits and misses.

2017 Ford Mustang vs 2017 Chevrolet Camaro

The muscle car fanboys have always been split between the ones who go for the Camaro and the others who pick the Mustang. Sure each has its own persona that makes them unique in its own way. The Camaro comes with a turbo-four engine as standard while the Mustang gets a V6 in the base trim which is slower in both the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile run compared to the Camaro.

Both the Camaro and Mustang have compromised cabin space with a cramped rear although the Mustang offers slightly better cargo space. The Camaro got a recent redesign and it now looks more modern and desirable than the dated Mustang. Thus we recommend you give both cars a shot and go for the one that clicks more to your heart.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Ford Mustang although comes with no major changes this year yet it still manages to pull the crowd towards it. The 2017 Mustang offers a variety of engine options that can cover almost every kind of customer needs. Speaking of needs the 2017 Mustang isn't a practical four-seater as the rear seats are cramped although you get a decent amount of cargo space which can further be increased by folding the rear seatback in case you aren't using it.

A lot has already been said about how well the Mustang rides and handles so no point repeating the facts. That said those who care little about gas mileage can surely pick the V8-powered Mustang otherwise the turbo-four powered Mustang which strikes a fine balance between performance and gas mileage is the way to go.
