Overview

The 2017 Ford Expedition is old-school in every which way possible. It is about time it gets a thorough update which is expected to happen sometime next year. This year though, things remain mostly unchanged in terms of specs and features. In terms of changes, there is only a new Limited Appearance Package that has been added, which offers new 20-inch alloys, side mirror covers, and a rear-activated liftgate.

2017 Ford Expedition Buying Advice

The Ford Expedition do not get any relevant changes this year and is expected to get a generation update next year. Therefore, it would be a smart move to wait another year and get the updated Expedition or one could save big money by buying a used Ford Expedition. The 2015 Expedition offers great value as it first introduced the twin-turbo V6 engine along with a minor facelift and is available for sale at a discounted price.

On the powertrain front, the Expedition is powered by a potent 3.5L twin-turbo V6, that has, in turn, set a benchmark of sorts for the rest of the Ford lineup. The full-size SUV is known for its hauling capacities, premium interior touches, and a big athletic exterior silhouette that might put the other rivals to shame. At this price tag, it competes against the likes of the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia

2017 Ford Expedition for sale

The 2017 Expedition is available for sale at an MSRP starting at $48,320 which sees a $1,690 price hike this year. The Expedition finance offers start at a monthly payment of $843 at 3.9% APR with a $4,835 down payment for a 60-month tenure. The 2017 Expedition lease deals begin at $766/month for a period of 36 months and require a $625 acquisition fee along with the same down payment.

Buying Advice

The base XLT trim of the 2017 Ford Expedition SUV seems like a best bargain to us. We would also suggest you to go for the comprehensive 202A packages which replaces it 18inch wheels with 20-inchers, includes well-trimmed leather front and second row seats, an 8-inch infotainment system featuring Sync 3 and compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring, remote start and passive entry.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Priced at a competitive MSRP of $48,320 including the $1,195 and backed by Ford's impressive warranty package, the 2017 Ford Expedition makes it even more competitive in this segment which represents a value-for-money deal. In urgent need of a full-on revamp from top to bottom, both on the exterior and interior front, the 2017 Expedition as of now seems pretty aged to say the least.

That said, the 2017 Expedition reliability rating of 81/100 from J.D Power is second only to the Sequoia. The Expedition 5-year cost of ownership is also pretty competitive at $52,098. There is no complimentary maintenance program, but the low number of problems and user complaints and the high safety ratings make it one of the favorites in the full-size SUV segment.

Buying Advice

Our pick of the lot would have to be the 2017 Ford Expedition King Ranch. It depicts the best value for money factor amongst all the other trims. Apart from features such as the premium Mes brown leather upholstery, we'd recommend you to even opt for the premium yet practical package options, such as the Limited Appearance package which replaces the standard alloys with 20-inch sets. By far the best bargain in its class.

Features
8.5/10

The 2017 Ford Expedition is on sale in 4 trim levels, namely XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trims, with prices ranging from $48,320 for the base XLT trim, and which goes up to $68,445 for the top-most Platinum trim.  Standard across the trim lineup is the V6 power unit along with a 6-speed AT. Moreover, you can also opt for the 4-wheel drivetrain setup for a premium of $2,925.

Filled up to the brim with the latest bells and whistles right from the base XLT trim, the 2017 Expedition offers great value to even budget buyers. The Expedition Limited sees a huge price jump of almost $9,000 but adds on plenty of creature comforts like the power tailgate, dual-zone climate control, upgraded & larger infotainment system, Sony premium audio system, heated/ventilated seats, larger wheels and more.

Going up the trim ladder, the Expedition King Ranch and Platinum do not add much in terms of the features list but add some premium appeal to the SUV. In terms of options package, the 201A and 202A adds features from the Premium trim to the base XLT trim for $3,145 and $6,755 respectively. Standalone options include a rear seat entertainment system, adaptive suspension system, load-leveling rear suspension, second-row captain's chair, power retractable running boards, and a 3.73 ratio rear limited-slip differential.

Fuel Economy
7.8/10

The 2017 Ford Expedition is able to deliver 15 MPG in the city and 21 miles to the gallon out on the highway, with the rear-wheel-drive setup, whereas the 4WD setup allows it to deliver 15 and 20 MPG in the city and highway respectively. This places it amongst the leaders of this segment in terms of fuel efficiency. Combine that with a massive 28-gallon fuel tank, and the 2017 Expedition can stretch to about 588 miles on the go-between fuel stops.

These figures are despite the fact that the Expedition is powered by a potent twin-turbo engine setup. The rivals on the other hand employ a large capacity V8 engine and hence offer lower frugality. That said, the Chevrolet Tahoe against all odds offers superior MPG ratings than the Ford Expedition and also leads in terms of driving range. Both the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia obviously struggle in this regard, with the Sequoia offering the least impressive range due to the small capacity gas tank.

Interior
7.8/10

While it is otherwise splendid inside, the cabin's cheap-looking plastics are flagrant fouls and unacceptable for the price - CarandDriver

The 2017 Ford Expedition is able to seat 8 average-sized adults at once. The daily-driving attributes of the Ford Expedition are much more pleasing and comfortable, now that it gets bolstered premium leather seats all around. The interior as a whole still feels aged in its layout and is in need of immediate restoration. The dashboard is filled with plastic, and evidently so, gives off a bland sense. Being a full-size SUV, as you'd expect, the 2017 Expedition comes with all the latest creature comforts one expects in a vehicle of this class.

6-way power-adjustable front and rear seats are available in the higher trims, whereas memory function is standard with the top-most Platinum trim. For entertainment needs, Ford equips the 2017 Expedition with a great 8-inch touchscreen system backed by Ford's latest Sync 3 interface. It has a user-friendly experience that delivers a pleasant experience to the users. The 2017 Ford Expedition has a cargo capacity of 18.6 cu-ft behind the third-row seats, which is pretty impressive.

There is no doubt that the Ford Expedition offers the most impressive cabin space in the segment. It offers the best combination of passenger and luggage space and also employs plenty of features and technology as compared to its rivals. The Chevrolet Tahoe is the least impressive of the lot with the smallest trunk and least impressive third-row legroom. The Nissan Armada does marginally better while the Toyota Sequoia offers similar space as that of the Expedition.

Some of the Interior Features on offer are-

  • Power heated/ventilated front seats w/driver seat memory
  • Reclining/sliding rear seats & power-folding third-row seats
  • Power-adjustable leather steering wheel & leather upholstery
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control w/Rear ventilation ducts
  • Universal remote transmitter & power-adjustable pedals
  • 8.0-inch SYNC 3 infotainment system w/12-speaker Sony audio system
  • HD radio & Satellite radio w/SiriusXM real-time traffic

Exterior

The Expedition's styling has aged gracefully - TheCarConection

We believe the 2017 Expedition exterior design layout to have aged quite a bit, and is in need of urgent restoration. Placed in the full-size segment, it goes without saying that the Expedition is huge in its dimensions. There is also a Long Wheelbase version that, further increases in dimensions, which in turn delivers the best-in-class cabin space. Coming onto the design, accented in a bit of chrome, the front grille completely covers the front end, with lines flowing across through to the LED headlights.

Boxy in its shape, you won't find any sharp cuts or creases throughout the side profile of the 2017 Expedition, as it's styled in quite a bland fashion. Many top-notch features have also been added to the 2017 iteration. The latest of the lot is the new Appearance package, which adds in a new pattern 20-inch alloys, side mirror covers, and black roof racks. Moving to the top of the trim table, the Platinum variant also offers you a set of 22-inch alloys. Ford offers up to 9 different paint color options for buyers to choose from and we especially like the Ruby Red Metallic showcased here.

While the Nissan Armada is longer and wider than the Ford Expedition, there is more legroom on offer inside the Expedition in all three rows, and also has more spacious cargo space. Both the Tahoe and Sequoia are marginally smaller but the Toyota weighs considerably more. It also offers the most impressive ground clearance. On the streets though, it is the Chevrolet Tahoe that looks most striking as the others have started to show a bit of age.

Some of the exterior features offered are-

  • Projector headlamps & LED fog lights w/Auto high-beam
  • Power liftgate and power running board
  • Rain-sensing wipers & power heated auto-dimming rear-view mirrors
  • Roof rack rails & power sunroof
  • Chrome exterior trims
  • 22-inch polished alloy wheels

Safety
9.0/10

A family cruiser in its essence, the 2017 Ford Expedition safety ratings are pretty impressive in almost all regards. The automaker never compromises on the safety front, and thus the 2017 Expedition is fitted with the latest set of active and passive safety features. Coming to the crash-test scores, the Expedition scored an overall 5 on 5 stars from the NHTSA, whereas the IIHS awards it an overall "Good" rating.

Some of the safety features included with the 2017 Expedition are-

  • AdvanceTrac ESC w/Roll stability control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Front & rear parking sensors w/rear-view camera
  • Blind-spot monitoring system w/Cross-traffic alert
  • Forward collision warning system
  • MyKey system

Competition
8.0/10

2017 Ford Expedition vs 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe

The most competitive and best rival to the Expedition, the 2017 Tahoe is the most reliable player in the town. Its full-size crossover dimensions, allow it to have a practical cabin space, which is ideal for any family.. The Tahoe definitely wins over in terms of exterior styling.

But the 2017 Expedition has the latest set of creature comforts going for it, which is by far the best in the segment. The 3.5L engine it houses is also better than the 5.3L 8-cylinder the Tahoe has. What’s being compromised is its congested seating area although it can accommodate a large amount of luggage.

2017 Ford Expedition vs 2017 Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada offers great value for buyers with its solid build quality, impressive reliability, and strong performance. It is pretty quick off the mark and offers one of the towing capacities. The interior is pretty decent too, offering spacious quarters for both the passengers and their luggage.

The Expedition on the other hand gets more creature comforts and has an impressive reliability and safety track record. Both the SUVs have started showing off their age in terms of styling and therefore we would call this battle a tie.

2017 Ford Expedition vs 2017 Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia opens up great space for hauling cargo and offers strong performance without it being too expensive. The Expedition tends to get expensive on the higher trims but offers a better towing capacity and has much higher fuel efficiency.

Both get great resale value with low maintenance and ownership costs, but the Sequoia inches forward in terms of reliability and refinement. While this makes it a preferential choice, we would pick the 2017 Expedition for its superior list of features and technology.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Ford Expedition full-size SUV is a very capable SUV that comes at a great price and packs in an impressive sum of interior and exterior features. be it performance, fuel efficiency, or practicality quotient, the 2017 Expedition aces it all. Ford aims to lead the full-size market sales with the Expedition, and rightly so it might as well do it if not for the aged exterior design layout. We highly recommend prospective buyers take a look at this bundle of value.
