Overview

Slotted in between the Escape and the Explorer, the 2017 Ford Edge is back again for another stint, with a multitude of feature additions this time around. A total of four new exterior shades are being introduced this year, along with a set of new 20-inch alloys, that make up for the whole exterior upgrade for 2017. The best-selling crossover is also offered with a standard 2.0L turbo-four engine, along with the additional 3.5L V6, and the 2.7L V6, being offered as optional.

Coming to the interior, Ford follows the same age-old interior design layout. Although, the 2017 Edge does get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard from now on, courtesy of the latest Sync 3 infotainment interface. Starting at a base price of MSRP $28,950, the 2017 Edge also gets plenty of the latest driver-assistance features as standard.

Buying Advice

Although the car that we have with us for today is the SE trim level,we would rather suggest you to go for the Titanium trim level of the Ford Edge. For a few bucks extra, you get loads of premium featuresand equipment. For a more sporty driving experience go for the all-wheel drive variant of the Titanium trim level.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Looking for a mid-sized SUV with some premium interior touches and a stylish exterior silhouette? Look no further as the 2017 Ford Edge is just the car you have been looking for. The unconventional shape and the tidy dimensions of the car make it a very attractive proposition. On the inside, the cabin is spacious and luxurious helping it invade the luxury crossover segment as well. The Edge is not really the car you would take off-roading but this one can certainly wade through the modern-day concrete jungles. With the starting price of $28,950, the 2017 Edge, despite the magnitude of feature updates it gets, it still has to prove its worth against the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the Nissan Murano.

Features

Filled up to the brim with the latest features, Ford also offers the Edge with plenty of package options, although for a premium. All of the trims come with a standard turbo-four unit, whereas on the optional front, you get a roaring V6 engine too. FWD is standard across the trim lineup, while the AWD setup is optional.

We would suggest you go for the Titanium trim level of the 2017 Ford Edge. That is for a premium of $7,000 more than the base trim, you get loads of premium features and equipment. On the flip-side, the Titanium trim also gets the latest new 20-inch wheels, whereas the Cold Weather Package offered with the Edge now gets a windshield wiper de-icer. For a more sporty driving experience go for the all-wheel-drive variant of the Titanium trim level.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2017 Ford Edge deliver 20 MPG in the city and 29 miles to the gallon out on the highway, with the FWD setup. Whereas the AWD setup reduces those figures by 1 MPG. Opting for the more potent 3.5L V6 engine, the Edge delivers 17 MPG in the city and 26 miles to the gallon out on the highway with the FWD setup, whereas the AWD setup backed Edge delivers 17/24 MPG in the city and highway respectively.

MPG (highway) 29 25 26 28
MPG (combined) 24 21 21 24
Fuel Tank capacity 19.5 gallons 18.8 gallons 24.6 gallons 19 gallons

Using a smaller engine and producing the lowest power figures helps the Edge to achieve the best fuel economy figures in the competition. Furthermore, it also has a start/stop system, which further improves the fuel efficiency.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2017 Ford Edge's cabin is mostly covered in soft-touch materials - Edmunds

Sharing its platform with the Ford Fusion, the 2017 Ford Edge is able to seat 5 average-sized adults inside quite easily, and that too comfortably. Relatively smaller in dimensions, the Ford Edge does manage to cough up a big cabin space for seating. It also manages to offer a handsome list of creature comforts. The leather bucket seats fitted inside in the Edge's Titanium trim get a 10-way power-adjustable function with memory.

Heating and ventilating functions are standard as well. The interior dashboard area though on the design front might lack character. Nevertheless, the overall fit and finish levels are absolutely praiseworthy, while the materials used for the interior panels are also of good quality, Quite honestly, the best seating for long hauls.

Some of the cool creature comfort features on the inside of the Ford Edge are.

  • Tilt and telescopic steering wheels with paddle shifters.
  • Height adjustable driver seats.
  • Optional noise-reducing front windows.
  • Ambient interior lighting.
  • Optional front sports bucket seats.
  • Driver seat memory seating.

2017 Ford Edge Infotainment System

The 2017 Ford Edge is offered with an 8-inch infotainment system, with the latest Sync 3 software interface from Ford. It offers crisp visuals and is quite intuitive too. Although the rest of the center stack is filled with plenty of buttons, which makes it quite difficult to navigate through different settings. Two USB ports are also available in front, although are quite difficult to access. The best part, Ford now offers the 2017 Edge with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Furthermore, for all the audiophiles out there, a 12-speaker Sony audio system is also available.

2017 Ford Edge Cargo Capacity

The 2017 Ford Edge houses a best-in-class 39.2 cu. ft of cargo capacity, behind the rear seats. As the cargo capacity is one of the primary deciding factors while buying an SUV, the 2017 Edge aces in that respect. It can fit in plenty of large suitcases for a long weekend getaway. It also features a hands-free liftgate.

Further interior storage spaces are plentiful. Coming to the competition, as the Hyundai Santa Fe is the only SUV out of the lot with 7 seats, the space behind it's rear seats is quite less compared to the rest.

Exterior
7.0/10

Ford Edge styling is conservative yet strong, starting with a large trapezoidal grille and ending with a sloped rear and wraparound lights that bring cohesion - KBB

Prioritizing on outright practicality, the 2017 Ford Edge loses out its focus when it comes to exterior design layout. The 2017 Edge is a compact SUV, that has a boxy athletic silhouette, that neither seems to thrill nor has a generic appeal to the masses. For 2017, the Ford Edge gets 4 new exterior shades, namely Canyon Ridge, Blue Jeans, White Gold, and Burgundy Velvet.

Apart from that, this year's Edge iteration also gets a brand new set of 20-inch alloy wheels. Nevertheless, Ford has focused this year to make the Edge look quite a bit intimidating and modern. The nice front grill surrounded by matt black accents, the tall boy stance, the boxy shape, and the pointy headlamps add to the overall drama of this car and necessarily give it loads of charachter.

7.0/10

Coming to the crash tests, the NHTSA awarded the 2017 Edge a grand 5 on 5-star safety rating, while the IIHS honored the Edge with an overall "Good" score on all crash tests. Sturdy and rigid in its built, it definitely showcases its safety prowess quite impressively.

Some of the safety features included in the Ford Edge are-

  • Surround vision camera
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Forward collision alert and Front pedestrian braking
  • Lane change alert with side blind zone alert

Competition

2017 Ford Edge vs 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is equipped with a 3.6L V6 engine, with slightly higher power and torque figures. The American rival excels in loads of other aspects too, including on the interior front.

Nevertheless, the Edge aces in all of the other aspects, such as the fuel efficiency front, infotainment front courtesy of the latest SYNC 3 interface, and best of all, on providing its customers with inspired driving dynamics. Clearly, the 2017 Ford Edge is the better car of the two, and also the cheapest.

2017 Ford Edge vs 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe is the only SUV of the lot that can seat in 7 people, unlike the rest that can accommodate only 5. The Santa Fe also uses a larger 3.6L V6 engine and also most definitely makes more power than the Ford Edge. Moreover, apart from better passenger volume, 2017 Santa Fe also has a better interior layout, depicting it is aces in the infotainment front too.

In other news, the Edge outshines Santa Fe on the feature front, including in the safety aspect, and also outshines Santa Fe, on the fuel efficiency front. So to end things off, our pick out of the two would definitely be the Hyundai Sant Fe.

Final Verdict

An impressive urban commuter, with good MPG figures, and on the basis of outright sheer performance, it delivers for the price, the 2017 Ford Edge is definitely worth its asking price. Packed up to the brim with the latest features, both on the interior and safety front, the 2017 Ford Edge is a well-equipped and competitive compact-sized crossover in the segment.
