Overview

The 2017 Chevrolet Traverse is available for sale with a base price tag of $28,700. The new base LS 1SM joins other trims which include LS, 1LT, 2LT, and Premier, the latter replacing the LTZ trim. A 281-hp 3.6L V6 is the main powerhouse of the Traverse and has its towing capacity rated at 5,200 pounds. Despite its bulky shape, the Traverse takes 6.8 seconds to sprint from 0-60 MPH but its poor fuel economy decreases its value.

The age of the Traverse can be witnessed by looking at its dated cabin layout. Nevertheless, it offers a spacious and practical interior. It also earned good safety ratings from the safety agencies. Speaking of its reliability, it scored decently but has received a lot of problems from its buyers due to which it ranks at the bottom. The Traverse gives tough competition to other segment leaders such as the Toyota Highlander, the Ford Explorer, and the Honda Pilot

Buying Advice

If you wish to buy the Chevrolet Traverse, we recommend you buy the 2LT trim as it offers a lot of features for its price. This trim adds a 10-speaker Bose premium audio system, a power tailgate, heated front seats, and tri-zone automatic climate control. We also advise upgrading to the Driver Confidence package as it adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert to the safety list.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2017 Chevrolet Traverse may be growing old, but in the world of 3-row, 8-passenger family SUVs, it’s still very relevant- Autotrader

The 2017 Chevrolet Traverse is known for its extraordinary practicality, spacious interiors, and car-like driving dynamics. However, there are some downsides to this SUV as well. It has a poor fuel economy in its class while the list of safety features are very few for a midsize SUV. The critics have also pointed out that its infotainment system is unintuitive and lags a lot of times.

The ownership costs of the Traverse are more than its rivals due to its high maintenance, fuel, and repair costs. According to our calculation, you may have to shell out nearly $8,800 every year for all the aforementioned expenses. Moreover, the Traverse has below-average reliability ratings in its class. Due to its low fuel economy, the average cost per mile is $0.59, which is again more than its rivals.

Features
8.0/10

The 2017 Chevy Traverse doesn't have much in the way of killer apps or class-exclusive features, but it's well-equipped in all versions- The Car Connection

This year, the top-end LTZ trim is replaced by Premier while a new LS 1SM trim has been added to the lineup. So the total trim count is five which includes LS 1SM, LS, 1LT, 2LT, and Premier. Prices vary from $28,700 for the LS Base model to $44,045 for the top-spec Premier trim. The newly-added base trim is only available in FWD configuration while the rest of the rivals come in both FWD and AWD drivetrains. The Traverse gets access to 17, 18 and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Only a few standard features are offered in the new LS 1SM trim. However, the feature list gets extended as you climb the trim ladder. Some of them include remote keyless entry, cloth upholstery, etc. Chevy's MyLink infotainment system is available from the 2LT trim onwards that adds Bluetooth audio streaming, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Some optional features include a navigation system, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a dual-pane sunroof.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The Traverse's fuel economy isn't as good as rivals, which dings its value proposition- Autolist

The Chevrolet Traverse is the worst fuel-sipper in its segment. In FWD guise, the Traverse returns 15 MPG in the city, 22 MPG on a highway, and 18 MPG combined. Comparatively these ratings are the lowest in its segment. Opting for the AWD system drops down the fuel economy by 1 MPG but the city and highway remain the same.

The driving range offered by the Traverse is not that impressive but still, it keeps up with the rest of the rivals in its segment. A combined driving range of 407 miles is delivered which is supplemented by a 22-gallon fuel tank. Definitely, the Traverse is not the most fuel-efficient SUV in its segment but its large fuel tank saves the day for its buyers.

Models 2017 Chevrolet Traverse 2017 Toyota Highlander 2017 Honda Pilot 2017 Ford Explorer
MPG (City) 15 21 19 17

Range (City/Highway/Combined; Miles) 330/484/407 403/518/460 371/527/449 316/446/381

Looking at the numbers on the table, the Traverse is indeed the least fuel-efficient SUV. With a combined mileage of 23 MPG, the Toyota Highlander is an efficient SUV. The Honda Pilot's MPG figures are almost similar to the Highlander. The fuel economy of the Ford Explorer is decent for its size but fails to deliver better range than the Traverse,

Interior
9.0/10

The cabin includes soft-touch materials on the dash and on the upper doors which create an upscale feel- Left Lane News

The cabin of the Chevrolet Traverse has a simple and clean design but it feels old in terms of layout. It seats up to eight passengers but the optional second-row captain chairs reduce the seating capacity to seven. Cloth upholstery is standard except for the Premier trim that gets perforated leather seats. Talking about the front-seat comfort, cushioning is good but there is no side bolsters to keep you in place. The front seats are power-adjustable and heated only on higher trims.

Six-footers will love sitting up front as there is plenty of head and legroom available. In the second row, the passenger space is diminished by a few inches but that's not much of a concern as adults can sit comfortably. However, the third row lacks enough space and is best suitable for kids. Getting back to the third row is easy as the second-row seats can slide and recline. But sometimes, it becomes a challenging task to slide the seat forward.

Only the Ford Explorer is a 7-seater SUV while the rest of the rivals seat up to 8 people. But its space levels are almost similar to the Traverse. The Toyota Highlander offers a good deal of passenger space in the first two rows but offers the least space in the third row. The shoulder room offered in the first two rows of the Honda Pilot is more than the Traverse. This means the seats are wide and the passengers won't feel congested.

2017 Chevrolet Traverse Infotainment System

The Chevrolet Traverse comes standard with a 6.5-inch touchscreen display. This screen supports basic functions such as satellite radio, AM/FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and auxiliary audio input. Chevy's MyLink infotainment system is standard from the 2LT trim onwards and adds audio streaming, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the list.

A 6-speaker sound system is standard on the lower trims but audiophiles will love the sound quality of the 10-speaker Bose premium audio system on the 2LT and Premier trims. A rear-seat entertainment system and navigation system are some optional features available in the Traverse. The touch responses are slow and the screen lags sometimes.

2017 Chevrolet Traverse Interior Features

The Chevrolet Traverse offers a decent list of standard features. Some of the infotainment and interior features of the Traverse are:

  • Tilt & telescopic multi-function leather steering wheel
  • 8-way power front seats with power lumbar support
  • Cloth & leather upholstery
  • Heated & cooled front seats
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Remote engine start
  • Power liftgate
  • 6.5-inch touchscreen display
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • 10-speaker Bose premium audio system
  • Wi-FI hotspot
  • SiriusXM

2017 Chevrolet Traverse Cargo Volume

The Chevrolet Traverse is one of the most practical SUVs in its segment. With all the seats upright, you will find 24.4 cubic feet of cargo space available. Fold the third-row seats and you will get access to 70.3 cubic feet. Finally, a maximum cargo area of 116.3 cubic feet is available with the second-row seats folded.

The seats fold completely flat and therefore, storing long items is easy. If you are still not satisfied with this space, you need to look for a minivan instead of a midsize SUV. A power liftgate is available only on the 2LT and Premier trims. Compared to its rivals, the Traverse has a low ground clearance which will be helpful while loading items into the cargo area.

The Traverse is a highly recommend SUV if you want the best cargo capacity as no other SUV here is close to its offering. The maximum cargo capacities of the Toyota Highlander and the Honda Pilot are almost the same i.e. close to 84 cubic feet. The Ford Explorer comes in last as it offers just 80.7 cubic feet.

Exterior
5.0/10

The Traverse is now eight years into its current design, but its style is holding up, thanks to front and rear tweaks made a few years ago- Kelly Blue Book

The Traverse is Chevrolet's oldest vehicle in their model lineup and in terms of exterior styling, it certainly is getting pretty dated. However, the Traverse is expected to gel a full redesign next year. Don't expect to find projector headlights or any kind of LED lighting on this vehicle. Instead, you get big halogen headlights accompanied by a bow tie on the grille. The fog lamps on the lower fascia round off the front design.

A hard plastic black molding runs along from the front to the rear to give a rugged appearance. Coming to wheel options. the Traverse is offered with 17,18 and 20-inch alloy wheels. The distance between the front and rear wheels is 118.9 inches, which is by far the widest in its segment. Therefore, it reflects in its spacious cabin. At the back, things are kept simple and just like the front-end, the rear design also looks dated.

With a ground clearance of 8 inches, the Toyota Highlander is a perfect SUV for those off-road lovers. Due to the light curb weight of the Honda Pilot, its on-road performance is better than the Traverse. The Ford Explorer's wheelbase measures around 6.1 inches less than the Traverse but it doesn't affect its in-cabin space at all. However, its short length does affect its cargo space.

2017 Chevrolet Traverse Exterior Features

Some cool highlights of the Traverse's exterior are as follows:

  • 17, 18 & 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Halogen headlights & taillights
  • Front fog lamps
  • Daytime running lights
  • Power-folding, auto-dimming exterior mirrors
  • Chrome door handles
  • Dual exhaust chrome tips
  • Chrome grille
  • Rear roofline spoiler
  • Chrome window trim

Safety
6.0/10

The 2017 Chevrolet Traverse was awarded the NHTSA's highest overall rating of five stars- MotorTrend

The Chevrolet Traverse performed very well in all the crash tests conducted by NHTSA and IIHS. It scored a 5-star rating from NHTSA. Individually, the Traverse scored 5 stars for the frontal and side crash tests and 4 stars for the rollover test. On the other hand, IIHS gave it 'Good' scores in almost all crash tests. But it received the lowest 'Basic' rating for its front crash prevention.

The Traverse also comes with a suite of six airbags which includes dual front, front side, and side curtain airbags. The base LS model is devoid of safety technologies but the optional Leather and Driver Confidence package adds a few driver assistance features that can increase the safety factor of the Traverse. In conclusion, the Traverse is a safe vehicle. Some of safety features include:

  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Rear Parking Sensors
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Departure Warning.
  • Rearview Camera.

Competition
7.0/10

2017 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2017 Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander has a high initial price than the Traverse. Although its power levels are higher, its agility is not as good as the Traverse. Even its towing capacity is slightly less but it's ahead in terms of fuel economy. The Highlander's cabin offers an impressive space in the first two rows but the third-row space is the least in the segment. Speaking of practicality, the Highlander is no match to the Traverse. With regards to safety, the Highlander boasts the best ratings and more features.

2017 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2017 Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot makes as much power as the Traverse and yet, its acceleration is quicker thanks to its low curb weight. It is a bit behind with its tow ratings but its fuel ratings are far better than the Traverse. Moving to the interior, the Pilot's space levels are almost similar to the Traverse but the main highlight is its easy-to-use infotainment system. Speaking of cargo space, the Pilot loses to the Traverse by a large margin. The Pilot is also a better pick due to its best safety ratings and a long list of driver aids.

2017 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2017 Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer is around $2,460 expensive than the Traverse. There isn't much power difference between the two SUVs but still, the Explorer has a slower pace while the tow ratings are almost the same. The Explorer's efficiency is much better than the Traverse but the latter's large tank helps to deliver more range. Like the Traverse, the Explorer's interior is spacious too but offers the least cargo space in this competition. Also, its safety ratings are not that great but it offers more safety features than the Traverse.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Chevrolet Traverse has been a consistent player in the affordable midsize SUV category. Its V6 engine makes enough power to keep the driver engaged but its fuel economy is the worst. But it offers adequate passenger space in all three rows in its segment. However, the upcoming 2018 model will be fully redesigned and will also undergo some changes in its structure and powertrain for better passenger space and fuel economy. Therefore, if you are not in a hurry, look out for the 2018 Traverse.

              Chevy, small suv

Pros - ["Roomy, great handling", "Roomy and spacey"]

Cons - ["Not all wheel drive", "No tow hitch"]

This is a great family vehicle with 3 Rd row seating, great ground clearance, plenty of power, and cargo area, plenty of options, great replacement for mini van owners with out giving up to much room. Buy onr

              Family friendly

Pros - ["Leg room is great.", "Smooth ride", "Good space"]

Cons - ["Mechanical issues at 80k", "Seats stain easily", "Expensive to fix"]

Great space for several people without being a mini van. Good hauling capabilities as well as being third row. However at only 80k miles it is already having mechanical issues that are common but nobody can track down what causes it.
