Overview

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox is on sale with a starting price of $23,100, which is one of the lowest in its segment. It is available in four trims which are L, LS, LT, and Premier. Two engines are on offer for the Equinox- a 182-hp four-cylinder engine and a 301-hp 3.6L V6 engine (only available on the LT and Premier trim). Even with the base engine equipped, the Equinox sprints from 0-60 MPH in 8.7 seconds, which is good considering its weight. The V6 engine offers a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs, which is segment-best.

The Equinox has been one of the top-ranked vehicles in its segment due to its top reliability ratings and zero recalls. It is also favored by families for its spacious and comfortable interiors while its practicality is above average. With regards to safety, the Equinox earned decent safety ratings but packs fewer standard safety features than its rivals. With a myriad of cars in its segment, the Equinox competes against the sales leaders such as the Ford Escape, the Mazda CX-5, and the Nissan Rogue

Buying Advice

The LT trim is a great value in the Chevy Equinox lineup. Aside from the available V6 engine, it also adds a lot of features. On the outside, it adds deep-tinted rear windows, power & heated exterior mirrors, roof rails, and LED DRLs. The Chevy MyLink system adds a voice recognition audio system, SiriusXM, and some other internet radio apps.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Equinox is known for providing a smooth ride and a tranquil cabin- Carfax

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox is one of the best-selling vehicles in its segment due to its comfortable interiors and strong reliability rating. Both engines offer decent performance for day-to-day driving but are a lot thirstier than other rivals. This SUV is highly regarded for families as its cabin is quite spacious and the cargo capacity is also good. Both NHTSA and IIHS treated the Equinox with good ratings but safety features could be better.

When it comes to owning the Equinox, its ownership costs are almost the same as its rivals. You may have to shell out close to $7,000 every year for its maintenance, fuel, depreciation, repair, etc. In particular, its maintenance and repair costs are less comparatively but its fuel costs are the highest. On that note, driving the Equinox costs up to $0.46 per mile. Due to its low fuel efficiency, it is slightly more than its rivals.

As for options, the Equinox offers a lot- Autotrader

Chevrolet offers the 2017 Equinox in four trims- L, LS, LT, and Premier. Pricing for these trims starts from $23,100 and it ranges up to $31,790 for the top-end Platinum trim. These prices exclude the $895 destination charge. Except for the base L trim, which is only offered in the FWD drivetrain, the rest of the models get both FWD and AWD configurations. Wheel options for the Equinox include 17 and 18-inch aluminum wheels.

For a base model, the L trim offers a decent list of features. Some of the standard interior features include cloth upholstery, manual climate control, front bucket seats, a 7-inch touchscreen display, a 6-speaker sound system, etc. There are several optional packages available  New for this year are Midnight and Sport packages that add black seats, wheels, and black paint. The Sport package is essentially the same but with white paint.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox posts impressive figures with its inline-4, but real-world mileage is another story- The Car Connection

The fuel economy is a major disappointment in the Chevy Equinox. The base four-cylinder engine returns 22 MPG in the city, 32 MPG on a highway, and 26 MPG combined. Choosing the AWD drivetrain largely affects the efficiency as it returns only 23 MPG combined. If these numbers don't impress you, the more powerful V6 engine has even bad MPG figures.

According to the EPA, the V6 engine is rated at 17 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on a highway, and 20 MPG combined. Equinox with an AWD setup will drop down the combined mileage by 2 MPG. This SUV gets a large 18.8-gallon fuel tank. With the base engine equipped, it delivers a combined range of 508 miles in FWD form while the V6 engine offers only 376 miles.

Range (City/ Highway/ Combined; Miles) 414/602/508 330/455/392 377/479/428 355/459/407

The Nissan Rogue is the most fuel-efficient SUV in this competition. It returns 3 MPG combined more than the Equinox. The Mazda CX-5 sits in second place with 27 MPG. The Ford Escape has the lowest fuel ratings due to its low efficiency. The large fuel tank of Equinox translates for the best driving range in this competition.

Interior

The quality of the materials is unremarkable, however, with plenty of hard plastics that have an industrial texture and shine- Edmunds

2017 Chevrolet Equinox Seating and Comfort

The interior of the Chevrolet Equinox has strong build quality but it looks a bit austere and uninspiring. This five-seater has standard cloth upholstery except for the Platinum trim that comes with perforated leather seats. The front seats are comfortable, supportive and the padding is soft too. Only the top-end Platinum trim gets an 8-way power driver's seat with a heated function.

The passenger room is great upfront and is quite welcoming for six-footers. There is no shortage of space at the back either. The seats at the back are spacious and comfortable too. The rear seats also slide and recline for better flexibility. The floor is flat which is a very nice thing for those who are ever in the middle position. Overall, Equinox's cabin is well-designed to be ergonomic for the occupants.

The Ford Escape offers the least legroom in the rear row, which can be unsettling for adults. The rear headroom offered in the Nissan Rogue is comparatively less and therefore, not suitable for tall people. The Mazda CX-5's space levels are almost the same as the Equinox.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox Infotainment System

A 7-inch touchscreen display sits at the center of the dashboard. The base L trim only supports radio functions and Bluetooth connectivity. Features such as AM/FM radio and SiriusXM is standard from the LS trim onwards. The Premium trim adds few upgrades such as a voice recognition audio system, speed-sensitive volume control, and internet radio apps such as Pandora, Gracenote, and Stitcher.

Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered by this infotainment system. All the trims get a 6-speaker sound system as standard but the optional 8-speaker Pioneer sound system is worth upgrading as its sound quality is much better. The touchscreen is slower in operation but the interface is simple and easy to use. The chunk of buttons below the screen is for changing the climate and audio settings.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox Interior Features

The Equinox's cabin is a host of many comfort and technological features. Below is the list of features available in the interior of the Equinox.

  • Tilt & telescopic multi-function steering wheel
  • 8-way power & heated driver's seat
  • Cloth & leather upholstery
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Remote engine start
  • Ambient lighting
  • 7-inch touchscreen display
  • 6-speaker sound system
  • Voice recognition audio system
  • SiriusXM

2017 Chevrolet Equinox Cargo Space

Behind the rear seats, the Chevy Equinox offers 31.5 cu-ft. of cargo space, which is above average in its segment. Folding them gives access to 63.7 cu-ft. of maximum cargo volume. That's not the best in the segment as some of its rivals offer more than 70 cu-ft. If you are in for some extra space, there is some available below the cargo floor.

The rear seats can be folded via the handles provided at the back. The rear seats fold completely flat so loading long items shouldn't be challenging. Unfortunately, a power tailgate is not offered in Equinox but a remote trunk release function is standard across all trims. The low ground clearance of the SUV is really helpful while loading the cargo area.

With a maximum cargo space of 70 cu-ft., the Nissan Rogue is the most practical SUV in this competition. The Ford Escape offers the most cargo space with all the seats up and comes in second with the rear seats folded. The Equinox stands below the Escape on the table while the Mazza CX-5 is the least practical SUV as it offers only 59.6 cu-ft.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox Dimensions and Weight

The exterior styling of the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox is somewhat bland. Upfront, the grille is black for all models except for the Premium trim that gets a chrome grille. Halogen headlamps and LED DRLs are standard across the range but the Premium trim also adds front fog lamps on the lower fascia. The Equinox is one of the longest SUVs in its segment as its overall length measures 187.8 inches. Therefore, parking at tight spots can be tough.

Only the Premier trim gets 18-inch aluminum wheels while the rest of the lineup sits on 17-inch alloy wheels. From the side view, the 112.5-inch wheelbase is also among the widest in its segment. Hence, it offers a spacious interior than its rivals. It also has the lowest ground clearance but is okay for an SUV. The LT and Premier trim add a rear deep-tinted glass for privacy and also keeps the sun from shining in. Around the back, the design is minimalistic and good.

The Ford Escape has the shortest wheelbase that measures nearly 7 inches less than the Equinox. Therefore, its rear legroom is less. It shares the same ground clearance with the Nissan Rogue i.e.7.8 inches, which is the best in the competition. This comes in handy during off-roading purposes. The light curb weight of the Mazda CX-5 trades off for its quick agility.

Equinox received a good response from IIHS as well. It received 'Good' ratings in most of the crash tests. The lowest 'Basic' rating was given for its front crash prevention while the child seat anchors were given an 'Acceptable' rating. Check out the IIHS scores of Equinox below.

IIHS Rating

Small overlap front driver side Good
Small overlap front passenger side N/A
Moderate overlap front Good
Side Good
Roof strength Good
Head restraints & seats Good
Front crash prevention Basic
Child seat anchors (LATCH) Acceptable

Looking at the above ratings of NHTSA and IIHS, no doubt the Chevy Equinox is a safe vehicle. Talking about driver assistance features, a rearview camera is the only standard feature. The optional Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II packages add some important features for extra bucks.

The list of driver assistance features offered in this SUV is as follows:

  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Rear Parking Sensors
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Park Assist
  • Stability & Traction Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Brake Assist

Competition
9.0/10

2017 Chevrolet Equinox vs 2017 Ford Escape

The Ford Escape makes the least power in this competition and hence, its acceleration is a bit slower than the Equinox. Due to its small fuel tank and low efficiency, its fuel ratings are the lowest compared to most of the rivals. Inside, the passenger space is less in the rear row but is one of the practical SUVs in this segment. The Escape also has decent safety ratings but its safety feature list is slightly better.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox vs 2017 Nissan Rogue

The Nissan Rogue is the slowest contender in this competition although it is the lightest vehicle due to its unresponsive engine. Employing a CVT transmission, the Rogue is the most fuel-efficient car. the interior layout of the Rogue is also clean but its rear-seat space is a tad bit less than the Equinox. At 70 cu-ft., the Rogue's cargo volume is one of the best in the segment. It has also garnered the 'IIHS Top Safety Pick+' award, which is really impressive.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox vs 2017 Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 house the most powerful engine in this competition and its light curb weight helps to achieve quicker performance stats. Its engine is also appreciated for its impressive efficiency. It sports a handsome cabin and spacious rear seats but its cargo capacity is less than the Equinox. The CX-5 also received the 'Top Safety Pick+' award from IIHS while its list of driver-assist features exceeds that of Equinox.

Final Verdict

Aside from its artificially inflated price tag and its dismal real-world fuel economy, there's not a lot to complain about the Chevrolet Equinox. Therefore, it is one of the top-selling vehicles in its segment. It also offers comfortable seating and enough safety features to keep its passengers safe. The segment is overflowing with choices. But even in the jam-packed fields, the Chevy Equinox is one of the best choices you can make.

              2017 Chevy Equinox

Pros - ["Has a lot of features like radio, Onstar and lots of trunk space", "Easy to read manual so I can find what I need", "Seats and seatbelts are adjustable"]

Cons - ["Uses lots of gas", "Decent miles per gallon but could be better", "Low traction for wheels"]

This car is a good starter car basically. It has commutable seats, decent MPG, and working radio with Bluetooth so I can answer calls hands free. This cars does have a lot of buttons and switches so it is hard to know what they all do off the top of the head. While it does have 3 rows of seats if you leave the 3rd row down you have decent storage space for traveling

              Great vehicle

Pros - Remote start, Moonroof is great

Cons - Nothing at all, Nothing at all

Great family vehicle. Spacious for groceries and going on vacation. Reliable car with lots of options. Remote start, moonroof, heated seats full radio screen with backup camera and alerts for pedestrians and motorists. Highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a midsize suv for their family
