Overview

Back in 2007, when Ford introduced the debut iteration of the Edge, it took the market by storm. The midsize SUV easily re-established the class standards and provided a proper American experience with its comfortable seats and domineering overall performance. Even today, the vehicle continues to be built on a similar set of ideologies. Though it is still a part of the second generation, the Edge remains highly practical. It offers ample space on both rows and is a quick-firing proposition. The standard all-wheel-drive comes in handy and though some materials feel inferior on the inside, the Edge’s focus on comfort cannot be understated.

Buying Advice

Among the available models in the lineup, we feel that the SEL trim provides the best bang for the money spent. At a diminutive difference from the base variant, the mid-tier option provides an ostentatious set of features that include heated front seats, power adjustability, and better infotainment features. It is also expected to get access to a number of optional packages, all of which make the SUV a cogent choice.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

With the 2023 model year as well, the Ford Edge will continue without any change. The SUV benefitted from several improvements over the past few years and though a similar platform has been used since 2015, the structural resilience of the vehicle has remained intact. For the upcoming iteration, it is expected that the midsize SUV will be priced at just under $39,500 and be available in similar trims as before. In its segment, it is expected that the 2023 Edge will compete against seasoned rivals like the Honda Passport, the Nissan Murano, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Features
8.0/10

With no anticipated changes, the 2023 Ford Edge is expected to carry forward the four-tier trim structure that was previously prevalent. This setup includes the base SE, SEL, ST-Line, and Titanium options, all of which share a common mechanical setup and are channeled as AWD variants. The pricing for the SUV starts at $39,445 and it feels adequately equipped with standard features like keyless entry, a six-speaker sound system, and a 12-inch infotainment screen. While optional packages have not yet been confirmed, we expect the Adventure and Ford Co-Pilot 360+ packages will maintain relevance in the upcoming model as well.

Among the available models in the lineup, we feel that the SEL trim provides the best bang for the money spent. Release Date

The 2023 Ford Edge release date has not yet been confirmed. However, if some trusted sources are to be believed, the SUV might be available for purchase by the Fall of 2022.

Fuel Economy
6.8/10

The 2023 Ford Edge, with no mechanical alterations, is expected to carry forward similar efficiency charts. Like always, the SUV manages impressive figures, which are class-leading. It averages 23 MPG under combined driving conditions and even gains ascendancy in the city and on the highway. However, it continues to be restricted by its least voluminous tank of 18.5-gallons, which has a bearing on the combined range, restricting it to 426 miles.

With the figures it manages, the 2023 Edge only manages to surpass the Honda Passport when efficiency is concerned. Even the Nissan Murano barely manages to take a lead. While it has similar efficiency figures, its fuel tank can store an additional half a gallon, which gives it a diminutive lead in terms of the overall range. However, when viewed holistically, the Jeep Grand Cherokee with its 23-gallon tank manages 598 miles on the highway, which is at least 66 miles more than every other SUV.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2023 Ford Edge interior has started to look slightly dated. Yet amidst all its familiar elements, the cabin feels welcoming and worthy of an SUV that is priced at just under $40,000. It feels neat and even with a vertically-placed touchscreen, the setup does not feel gimmicky. It provides easy access to all usable buttons and knobs and with defined ergonomics, Ford aces the requirements of traditional buyers. Even the material quality is fulfilling and though there are certain plastic elements, the cabin in no way looks inferior.

As for space, the 2023 Edge has ample head, shoulder, and legroom to offer on both rows. The SUV can easily seat five passengers and even taller adults will find themselves in utmost comfort. The seats are adequately padded and provide impressive cushioning that aids lumbar support. Additionally, there are ample storage spaces inside the cabin, which allows the brand to coalesce practicality with leisure. Even the cargo space is impressive and with all seats folded, the trunk volume feels mammoth at 73.4 cubic feet.

In comparison, all SUVs can seat five passengers. However, the 2022 Passport bestows the best experience. Its clever dimensions allow maximum passenger space in both rows and even the maximum cargo capacity is highest at 100.8 cubic feet. Both the other vehicles lag behind Ford when space is concerned. However, it is important to note that the Jeep Grand Cherokee has been recently redesigned and its cabin looks better than the class.

Some of the standout interior features available with the 2023 Ford Edge:

  • Dual-zone Climate Control
  • Cloth Upholstery
  • Leather-wrapped Steering Wheel
  • Powered driver and passenger seats
  • Heated front seats
  • Interior Air Filtration

How intuitive is the 2023 Ford Edge’s infotainment system?

The 2023 Ford Edge’s infotainment system is expected to make use of a standard 12-inch vertically-placed touchscreen unit that runs on the SYNC 4 system. This setup is easy-to-use and does not require a steep learning curve to it, which makes it rather user-friendly. The menu options are logically placed and the display unit provides top-notch graphics that provide an impressive overall experience. The infotainment system as standard offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 6-speaker sound system. Other salient features include:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 9-speaker Sound System
  • 12-speaker Bang and Olufsen Sound System
  • WiFi Hotspot
  • Optional Entertainment System
  • Satellite Radio

Exterior
6.0/10

The 2023 Ford Edge continues with an edgy design that has been well received. It sports a sharp-looking front fascia that houses striking headlamps and adds to its muscularity with its imposing front grille. On the side, it looks rather bulbous while the rear end has a coupe-like design. Though it might restrict visibility to an extent, the overall proportions and dimensions are well contained and each wheel size available with the SUV does not look odd.

In terms of dimensions, the Ford Edge lies somewhere in between the segment. It sports the shortest body length of 188.8 in but has the second longest wheelbase of 112.2 inches. It is also adequately wide at 75.9 inches and stands at a total height of 68.3 in.

The redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most enticing option in the class. With its overhaul, the SUV looks refined and has a sophisticated overall fascia that is made possible by the easy-going front lamps and defined character. It also sports the longest wheelbase of 116.7 inches and is also the heaviest at 4,365 lbs. On the other hand, the Nissan Murano is the lightest at 3,978 lbs and sports a wheelbase of 6.9 inches.

Some of the exterior features of the 2023 Ford Edge include:

  • 18/19/20-inch alloy wheels
  • Fog Lamps
  • Titanium Elite Package
  • LED Headlights
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Running Boards

Safety
9.0/10

The 2023 Edge is yet to be released and so it has not been subjected to any safety tests. Nonetheless, Ford’s idea of providing a plethora of driver-assistance technologies from the base variant itself helps establish a favorable image for the vehicle. As standard, the SUV comes equipped with a blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning system, and Ford’s Co-Pilot 360. Additionally, it offers the Co-Pilot 360+ as well offers adaptive cruise control and an evasive steering system. Other safety features include:

  • Dusk Sensing Headlamps
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Pre- and Post-Collision Safety System
  • Blind-Spot Monitor
  • Emergency Braking Preparation
  • Enhanced Active Park Assistant

Competition

2023 Ford Edge vs 2022 Nissan Murano

The competition between the Ford Edge and Nissan Murano has been rather long-standing. For several years, both SUVs have locked horns in several aspects, and without a doubt, the American proposition has emerged victorious. The similar is the case today. The 2023 Edge has ample benefits to offer, it is quicker and more efficient. It is easy to drive and though it features a sluggish transmission unit, Murano’s CVT has far more restrictions. Additionally, Ford’s SUV provides better space on the inside and has a larger boot for improved cargo space. It looks the part as well with its striking front fascia and at a price that is only a couple of thousand dollars higher, it proves to be the logical choice.

2023 Ford Edge vs 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee comes off the lot as an all-new model. It has been overhauled from the ground up and with its redesign, the likability of the SUV has improved manifold. Surely, the newer design language has avid followers drooling, but even in terms of performance, the SUV feels comprehensive. Compared to the 2023 Edge, the Jeep might be slower, but it takes the lead when fuel efficiency and deceleration are concerned. Additionally, it also offers better cargo space as standard and has more novel features at its disposal. It also offers an optional V8 engine to the buyers and at a price that is only diminutively higher, we would suggest buyers opt for the Jeep GC.

2023 Ford Edge vs 2022 Honda Passport

In the final contention, the 2022 Honda Passport moon walks its way to the segment leader position. In all comparable aspects, the Japanese vehicle leads the class. Starting with the acceleration, the Passport SUV is quicker and equally efficient. It sports the largest cabin in the comparison here and has almost 30% more cargo space than all of its rivals. Even on the outside, it looks impressive and has a freshness to its design despite sticking to the basics of the brand’s ideologies. The only place where it does lag behind is its ride quality. The driving experience is not the most refined and lacks sophistication. So, when deciding between the two SUVs, it is best for buyers to analyze their requirements before finalizing a purchase decision.

Final Verdict

Call it your general handyman or a flamboyant option that deserves your attention, the Ford Edge easily satisfies both claims. It is one of the more logical options available on the market, which not only ensures apt acceleration but is also equally efficient. The interior space and comfort are top-notch and while the cabin might seem dated to some, the features on offer are highly novel. They add a touch of leisurely convenience in a practical setup. The 2023 Edge is not exorbitantly priced, rather it is one of the more affordable options available in its class. So, yes, we believe that the latest model year is a great choice, however, if you can find an enticing deal on a used Ford Edge, we would not veto that option as well.
