Overview

The Hyundai Palisade is the brand’s largest SUV which made its debut back in 2018 and replaced the Santa Fe XL when it was launched. Over the years, the Palisade has been known for its amazing ride quality, premium interiors, its love-it-or-hate-it distinctive exterior design, spacious three rows of seating, and loads of safety and driver-assist technology that are offered with the vehicle. It shares its underpinnings with its cousin the Kia Telluride which shares the same chassis setup, almost the same set of features, and the same powertrain. Ever since its launch, the Palisade has been powered by a single engine which is a 3.8-liter V-6 which is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and pushes out a healthy 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of peak torque. The Palisade comes with an option of AWD which makes it decently capable off-the-road too, but don’t expect to be a true-blue offroader.

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade rivals its very own cousin the 2024 Kia Telluride, which also remains unchanged for the year 2024, the 2024 Honda Pilot, and the 2024 Mazda CX-90. All of which are great cars in the segment that are famous for something or the other. And it would be interesting to see how the 2024 Hyundai Palisade competes against them!

Buying Advice

The “SEL” trim along with the premium package makes for the best Palisade in the line-up, along with all the essential features as standard and without causing a hole in your pocket. You can also opt for the SEL without the premium package and still remains a great value-for-money deal. The “SEL” trim comes in both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive powertrains according to your priority, and is quite capable when you choose to take the roads less taken! However, if you are looking for some more features, the Caligraphy can be a better choice but we really don’t recommend spending that much money here.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Currently, in its first generation only, the Hyundai Palisade is a mid-size luxury 3-row urban SUV that is a perfect pick for a family man who is looking for loads of space, great ride quality, luxurious interiors, and a long list of equipment list in his car. The Palisade remains mechanically unchanged for the year 2024, with some changes done to its trim line-up and some features being made standard across particular variants.

Features
9.0/10

One of the noticeable changes in the 2024 Hyundai Palisade from the previous model year is the addition of new trim in the line-up range which is known as the “Calligraphy Night Edition”, and it is now the most expensive trim on the Palisade which sits above the Calligraphy trim. Priced at $53,600 and available only as an AWD variant, the Calligraphy Knight edition gets you a blacked-out exterior trim, unique black wheels, black roof rails, and a black leather interior among others. Apart from that, there are minor changes to the trims like the XRT trim now comes with rear-side window shades, Limited trim now gets ambient interior lighting, and dual-zone front and single-zone rear automatic climate control features are now standard on the base SE trim. Talking of pricing, the 2024 Hyundai Palisade starts at $36,400 for the base SE trim in its FWD variant and goes all the way up to $53,600 for the Calligraphy Night edition trim which only comes with an AWD drivetrain.

Engine and Performance
6.0/10

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade remains mechanically the same as the previous 2023 model and under the hood lies the same 3.8L V6 which pushes out 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of peak torque through an 8-speed automatic transmission, the same powertrain also powers it cousin, the Kia Telluride. Gearshifts on the Palisade are overall smooth but they can sometimes get slightly confused when climbing hills, however, acceleration is brisk, and overtaking vehicles on the highways is never an issue. The Palisade does a respectable 0-60 MPH mark in just 6.4 seconds while it reaches a quarter mile in 14.8 seconds and the claimed top speed stands at 131 MPH. Noises from the engine do not protrude inside the cabin at all and refinement levels are up to the mark!

When comparing the 2024 Hyundai Palisade to its rivals in terms of engine performance, it is the most powerful vehicle in the segment along with the Kia Telluride which uses the same powertrain and pushes out a healthy 291 hp from a 3.8L V6 engine and it is also the quickest in terms of 0-60 MPH mark with a timing of 6.4 seconds! The exact 0-60 MPH timings for the 2024 Mazda CX-90 are not known yet and we will update this section as soon as we are updated with it. However, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 produces the most torque at 332 lb-ft from its turbocharged 3.3L Inline-6 with a 48-volt hybrid system and AWD as standard.

2024 Hyundai Palisade Ride and Handling

The handling of the 2024 Hyundai Palisade is one of its demerits which prevents it from being a complete package as a luxury full-size SUV as it feels quite lackluster and there are rivals out there like the Mazda CX-90 which offer much better handling and are an absolute joy when going around twisties. Apart from that, the ride on the Palisade is more oriented toward the comfort side, and it provides an amazing ride quality to all the occupants sitting inside and soaks the bumps on the roads very well. Body roll is moderate considering the size of the SUV, though it never feels unsafe or unstable.

2024 Hyundai Palisade Braking Performance

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade has decent stopping power and Hyundai has loaded it with a ton of features to stop its 4,301 lbs weighing 3-row SUV to a stop in as minimum distance as possible. It has features like emergency braking assist, ventilated front disc / solid rear disc brakes with 13.4-inch brake rotors, and 12-inch rotors at the rear respectively, and 4-channel ABS among various other advanced features. Apart from that under heavy braking, there is a lot of vibration in the steering wheel, and you can also feel antilock braking pulsing through the pedal. However, brake bite is strong and ensures confidence.

Talking of the braking performance when compared to its rivals, it is the 4,202 lbs weighing 2024 Honda Pilot that has the largest brake rotors in this segment with 13.8 inches on the front and 13 inches at the rear, which provides it with optimum grip and braking power to this Japanese SUV apart from loads of safety tech while it is around corners or under panic braking situations.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Powered by a 3.8 L V6, the 2024 Hyundai Palisade gives out decent fuel economy when driven in a sedate manner, and returns around 19 MPG in the city, which increases to 26 MPG on the highway and makes for a combined fuel economy of 22 MPG. Apart from that it has a large fuel tank of 18.8 gallons which helps it return a combined range of 413 miles. The same figures can also be considered for the 2024 Kia Telluride which rivals the Palisade, which is based on the same platform, and uses the same powertrain. However, it must be noted that parameters like fuel economy depend on various factors and the driving style of different individuals.

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade is at par with its arch rivals when it comes to fuel economy by returning combined fuel efficiency and range of 22 MPG and 413 miles respectively with the largest fuel tank capacity of 18.8 gallons. However, it is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 that is the most fuel-efficient in this segment, thanks to its additional 48-volt hybrid system paired with its turbocharged 3.3L Inline-6 which helps it attain a combined fuel efficiency of 25 MPG and a range of 462 miles! The 2024 Mazda CX-90 also comes in a plug-in hybrid in higher variants.

Interior
9.0/10

Talking about the interiors in the 2024 Hyundai Palisade, it feels luxurious, well-appointed as well as spacious at the same time. The initial trims of the Palisade that is the “SE” and “SEL” have a seating capacity of up to eight passengers, while the higher variants like Limited and Calligraphy can seat 7 people comfortably. Accessibility to the third row is easy thanks to the electric adjustment of the seats of the second row, which can be adjusted with the help of a button. Apart from that there is ample space in all the rows for average sized-adults. Talking about refinement from the engine, it is well-contained and you won’t hear much inside the cabin, however, you do hear wind noise which penetrates through the doors at higher speeds. Talking of features, the Palisade is loaded to the brim, and you get features like a heated steering wheel, tilt, and telescopic steering wheel, three-zone climate control, power-folding second and third-row seats, wireless charging, and various other features.

The 2024 Palisade fares marginally well when compared to its rivals in terms of interior space, however, it does not lead in any particular area. And it is its sibling, the 2024 Kia Telluride that takes the cake in the interior space parameter with the maximum space in the first two seating rows. Apart from that, it also boasts the highest cargo capacity with 21 cubic feet. The 2024 Mazda CX-90 loses out on this space with the least interior space in the first and second rows, while offering the least cargo space at just 14.9 cubic feet.

Some of the key interior features are:

  • Tilt and telescopic steering wheel
  • Power rear seat easy entry
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Three-zone climate control
  • Digital rearview mirror
  • 1st-row power glass moonroof
  • 2nd row fixed glass moonroof

How intuitive is the 2024 Hyundai Palisade infotainment system?

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade comes standard with a 12.0-inch infotainment system and has features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, in-dash navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity standard across all trims, and feels fluid and easy to use. In the 2024 model year, you now get the Bluelink+ app service features as standard, which lets the owners connect to their vehicle via their smartphone and get access to a lot of connected car features like emergency notifications, voice assistant, remote start and climate control pre-conditioning, among others. You also get a heads-up display in the Limited, Calligraphy, and Calligraphy Knight edition trim whereas there are numerous USB-C ports spread across all three rows along with 10 speakers on selected trims. If this is not enough, you can also opt for the premium package which will get you features a 12-speaker premium audio system, an Upgraded driver information display, a 360-degree camera system, and a Blind-spot camera to your infotainment system.

Key infotainment features are:

  • 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay
  • 7 USB C-type outlets
  • Automatic Equalizer
  • Bluetooth hands-free connectivity w/multiple device connection and Bluelink Connected Car System
  • Radio w/Seek-Scan, Clock, Speed Compensated Volume Control, Aux Audio Input Jack, Steering Wheel Controls and Radio Data System
  • onboard navigation w/traffic flow including incident data via HD Radio

Exterior
7.0/10

Talking of the exterior design language on the 2024 Hyundai Palisade, it has remained the same since it was launched way back in 2018 with no changes, and it was the start of Hyundai’s love-it-or-hate-it designs which later passed on to other cars. For us, it has grown over the years and now the Palisade looks distinct yet commanding in our opinion. On the front, you get split daytime running LEDs in a waterfall design on the top while the full LED projector beam headlights, sit on the lower part of the bumper, which is also a new trend in cars these days. Apart from that you get a huge aluminum finish grille up front along with air curtains that are functional and help in aerodynamics. Coming to the side profile you have the options for choosing the tyre size and alloys depending on the trim you opt for. Apart from that, there is no chrome that has been replaced by aluminum, and we appreciate it. You can notice the roof rails as well as a sunroof on the Palisade. Coming to the rear profile of the Hyundai Palisade, you get a bold look that goes well with the overall look of the car that has a bold Palisade badging along with a large Hyundai logo with some badging for the AWD technology. You get all LED taillights, with dual exhaust tips in the lower right corner.

Comparing the 2024 Hyundai Palisade in terms of exterior design with all its other rivals, you might find the design to be quite subjective but that totally depends on the person’s choice. The 2024 Hyundai Palisade and the 2024 Kia Telluride are almost identical in terms of dimension, however, it is the Mazda CX-90 that is the heaviest, longest, and widest car in this comparison. It also has the longest wheelbase at 122.8 inches. Surprisingly, the CX-90 also has the least space inside despite its large dimensions.

Some standard exterior features include:

  • LED headlamp and Daytime running lights
  • Rearview camera
  • Aluminum finish on exterior
  • All season tires
  • Turn signal mirrors
  • Heated mirrors

Safety
9.0/10

Talking of the safety of the 2024 Hyundai Palisade, its scores of crash testing by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) are not yet out completely and we have figures only for the Frontal Barrier Crash Rating on which it scores a perfect 5 stars, which assures us of its safety but we would like to wait for the full report and love to see the Palisade score a perfect 5. Apart from that, there is a long list of safety features which is available on the Palisade. And there is also no feature that cannot be added on even the base trim, through the optional packages on offer. Some of the advanced safety features in the 2024 Palisade include Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and Standard adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode among various others.

Some standout safety features

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Surround View Monitor
  • Blind spot and lane departure warnings accident avoidance system
  • Dual front and dual rear side-mounted airbags
  • Emergency braking assist
  • 4-wheel ABS

Competition

2024 Hyundai Palisade vs. 2024 Kia Telluride

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade and 2024 Kia Telluride are basically the same cars underneath and share the same powertrain, chassis setup, and have nearly the same dimensions when compared. The only differentiating factor between the two cars is that the Palisade is more oriented toward luxury by offering more features in its luxurious cabin and a softer suspension setup for a comfortable ride, whereas the Telluride's slightly stiffer suspension does a better job of making the big SUV feel more stable through turns, Apart from that it is the exterior design, which is a personal preference of each individual and we leave that decision to you!

2024 Hyundai Palisade vs. 2024 Honda Pilot

Honda recently updated the Pilot for the year 2024, and now it gets a completely redesigned exterior and interior layout, more cargo space and rear passenger room, along with the addition of Trailsport trim in its lineup that is solely focused on off-road performance. The Palisade lags behind the Pilot in terms of off-road performance and package and clever interior storage options which makes the Pilot a bit more practical vehicle of the two here. However, it’s the Hyundai’s interior that feels the more luxurious in our opinion and offers you a longer list of features too, apart from that it has a more powerful engine too as compared to the Honda.

2024 Hyundai Palisade vs. 2024 Mazda CX-90

The 2024 CX-90 replaces the Mazda CX-9 and is the brand’s all-new SUV in the full-size SUV segment. The CX-90 boasts of premium-looking luxurious interiors, strong performance from its mild hybrid yet strong hybrid engines, and a comfortable ride quality. It also comes standard with an AWD system and is equally powerful yet more fuel-efficient than the Palisade, all thanks to its 48-volt hybrid pack which is paired with its Turbocharged 3.3L Inline-6 cylinder. Apart from that the CX-90 offers you the best driving dynamics in this segment. This makes us choose the 2024 Mazda CX-90 over the Palisade for its performance and excellent driving dynamics. However, if you are not looking for a sporty vehicle in this segment, you could do with the Palisade too, and it is cheaper as well!

Final Verdict

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade is a great vehicle for someone looking for a full-size 3-row SUV that is comfortable and spacious, has a decent ride and handling balance, has distinctive looks, and is feature-loaded to the brim. It gets various optional packages for further equipment add-ons and a long warranty period which takes the notch of comfort and convenience even higher. Apart from that, buyers also have the option of opting for Front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive drivetrain options with each trim. However, it is not the best when it comes to driving dynamics and is slightly more oriented toward comfort. And if you are looking for performance with great driving dynamics in this segment, you could look somewhere else like the Mazda CX-90 or even its very own sibling the Kia Telluride for that matter as it offers a better suspension system resulting in better handling. Apart from that, it is a great vehicle overall which is aimed at comfort, convenience, space, and features with great performance from its engine!
